How you get this score? where can i try?
Yeah I need that too
I find it in the pinned comments, I highly recommend it to test your English listening and understanding skills. Link: https://www.efset.org/ef-set-50/
I guess listening and understanding spoken English is easy for me, BUT Im having a hard time "talking" in English and sometimes it gives me frustration lol.
Then shadow
Same haha, I just mixed up āmemoriseā and ārecogniseā when I was talking to my UK friends probably due to anxiety (I have no problem at all when distinguishing between the two in English reading and writingā¦)
And sometimes I even get the basic grammar wrong in spoken English while I used to score the highest in grammar quizzes almost every time š
i'm sure practice will help

whats the difference in pronounciation between dyed and died in american english?
.
dyed mean changing the color for example a shirt. I dyed my shirt green. Died means the person or animal had passed away, or went to heaven. example: My grandpa died three years ago
i know their meaning, but i wanted to know the difference in pronounciation
oh my bad
i pronounce both dyed but my friends pointed out that its different
no they are the same
lol
@solemn igloo @cerulean stirrup check the pinned message

How can I improve my speaking, I mean, to speak clear english? Like improving articulation
Hey everyone, Could you guys judge my accent. Its been a while i have posted an audio down here. Thanks
a clear voice
Very good enunciation. Awesome!
Sov-ren-tee
You are too good bruh. It sounds like a native speaker.
Very Good Voice And Accent Some How Is Not That Important Though
Yeah sounds like native
True, as long as you're understandable to those who are listening, it doesn't matter at all.
Has anyone tried this? Does it really work?
Weird tip lol
I find it weird too thatās why Iām asking lol
Never tried it no
I didnt think id do as good
https://cert.efset.org/hWsAnB
āThirty thousand thoroughbreds thoughtfully thought through the tough terrain, thoroughly trouncing the treacherous track.ā
Is this good enough?
Also sorry for half whispering it was almost 2 am as I recorded this š
it's very clear. love how you stress the t
Yeah, you pronounced those words well
I have a question for you since you're native, hopefully american
Do we drop the D in thousand?
It falls between two consonants
Hi
hi
GraciƔs
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasnāt fuzzy, was he?
This is my personal favorite
No, in thousand, we don't drop the d. in some speakers you may not hear the d, but it's iimportant to stress this letter
But I thought when T or D lie between two consonants, It should be dropped
Oh you're not american, my bad
I'm going for american accent
no, i'm native english speaker,
t and d are dropped unless the third consonant is an h
Alright, I'll write that down. Thanks
that works
the main point is to get your lips, tounge active
your jaw also

fuzzy wazzy was a bear fuzzy wazzy had no hair fuzzy wazzy wasn't fuzzy was he
Youāre what?? š¤·š»āāļø
Easily understood without reading along. Really good pronunciation.š
TeÅekkür ederim! (Thank you)
what was that
i think i cant record here can i
oh nvm just use phone
genuine question
are you using your mom's discord
you have such a lovely baby voice lmao
Not tryna sound pretentious, but I think my attempt was the best and fastest
Bro fastest isnāt always the best š
You're right, was just tryna sound native
But tongue twisters should be said fast
if you don't mind me asking how old are you @river lance
Wonderful job by the way, you are totally out doing the adults here with the tongue twister
Ah yeah you have a point
ok so iām in the us for the year, and a friend here asked me why i canāt make a good american accent yet (he says that while talking in spanish he can make a good spanish accent)
for the record: iāve been here for a month now
Your friend is kind of dumb and shouldn't be putting you down if he's a friend.
ese wey lmao
ni le hagas caso
you will get better over time man
You'll be fine as long as you're understandable

notice the difference the sounds they make from yours i think it could work for you
overdoing mouth movements ( lips, tongue movements ) can also help a lot
easier way is just copy the way they spell the syllables
(if you wanted to have an american voice) ( it actually works with all languages)
he is just concerned, ig a spanish accent is easier than an american one since the first one is actually consistent and doesnt have 15 vowels
he says he can understand me 95%/99% of the times
i watched a few videos about the R yesterday but i cannot make it
even tho i guess the same applied for āthā a few years ago
you can
Okay, now the question is. do you want to have that american accent?
Yeah so he's just being horrible to you for no reason since he can understand you just fine.
Look even native speakers won't be understood 100% of the time.
Yup that's what matters here. I still think the "friend" is being a bully.
IMHO it's not worth it to change your accent for anyone but yourself
I'm all for harsh but polite feedback when the person asks for it, but this doesn't sit well with me.
So what if you can't make a perfect R or TH? Life goes on both for you and your "friend". Communication is key. You seem to be doing just fine at that
Plus there are implications to choosing a specific accent and no one should make that choice for you.
People's opinion literally doesn't matter.
Let me talk about my friend for a minute to illustrate this.
The friend is real but not going to doxx them.
In the span of two weeks, he's had native speakers (usually not from the US and he's learning a US accent) tell him he sounds annoying. Then he's also had a couple of Americans suggest he starts doing voice work professionally... Because these Americans like his voice!
Plus everyone can change their voice up to a point including pitch and accent, so voice identity fluctuates.
record yourself saying this
write right muck mug tease teas teeth teams twist
yes i do
he was just concerned
hes being a good friend so far
they want me to improve and i want to improve
(iām here as an exchange student, improving my english is kind of the topic)
Then maybe they should actually teach you the sounds you struggle with
Alright, used to struggle with R and TH sounds, hmm.. Fixed it through watching youtube videos and reading books
i have been watching youtube and movies in english for years now
my r is the same though
Okay, are you shadowing?
shadowing?
Brother
Some natives can't make the r sound by the way. Might not be the most problematic "mistake"
my friends struggle to understand my r bc it seems like an l
Of course you won't get it the first time, shadowing is to speak with or after that youtuber or actors
so thats what i should do?
gotcha
thank you
Strengthened my tongue muscles to make those new sounds
Eh I'm not a huge proponent of shadowing in this case but he can try it. I'm pretty sure he should study the r sound specifically
He tried though
He just can't get his tongue in shape
More stress on the T's brother
my theatre teacher is telling me to put more effort on the consonants too
itās hard for me tho
You'll get there bro, you just haven't practiced speaking long enough, I was way worse before shadowing
thank you
pronounciation is my weakness
everything else is advanced (listening, vocab, fluency)
I reckon you didn't have someone to speak english with before you boarded to 'merica
Am I correct?
i mean
i had my english classes
but my teacher wouldnāt really correct me unless the pronounciation was really far off
iām also correcting the āuhā after the words
like i used to pronounce ādogā dog-uh, because in italian every word ends in a vowel
Nahh, my man, I ain't talking about classes where you read out loud for a short portion
no i mean like during oral tests, where i would get a mark on how well i can talk about english literature
but thatās all
and my teacher wasnt native
she was italian
School is never enough, take it from someone who learned nothing from school
All I did was personal effort
honestly i started to learn the most when i branched out away from school and started watching media, and found out that my english sucked, but it improved in time
now i can basically watch a movie in english without subtitles and understand a good 80%>, 90%> with context
Exactly, school can teach you the fundamental and that's about it
The rest rely on you
i do think the way school teaches you is bad
Same here
there should be way more listening and reading tests rather than completing the gaps
True, all they teach us is grammar that I don't remember anything about
I copy how others speak and speak like them
yep same
like
the more i see a structure without understanding its meaning artificially, the more i understand the structure itself
Exactly, even most americans don't know anything about their grammar
I don't even know my native lang grammar
Yet I can speak it, cause I use it on daily basis
i know mine just because we are forced to study it anyway when we are young (italian grammar is complex)
True, but you don't really need it to communicate with other italians
So yeah, that's it for me, and hope you get the results you're seeking
im back
thank you :)
is it true that americans pronounce ābecause of theā like ākzdā
i had never realized it
read the bible, it's way too simple for a beginner to understand and words are easier to pronounce (a simple print)
and decide on which accent you're gonna be picking up from your peers or people around you
for me, it's the american english
i have to read this monologue as an assignment for my theatre class
iām in the us so the same goes for me
plus i love shakespeare

Britain English is so hard for me

I think he means all of 'em
Yes, I usually study american accent

Anything apart from the Scottish accents like Glaswegian or people from Edinburgh. Those are tough ones
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
"TO SPEAK ABOUT THE MEANING AND VALUE OF LIFE MAY seem more
necessary today (1946) than ever; the question is only whether and
how this is āpossible.ā In some respects it is easier today: we can now speak
freely again about so many thingsāthings that are inherently connected
with the problem of the meaningfulness of human existence and its value,
and with human dignity. However, in other respects, it has become more
difficult to speak of meaning, value, and dignity. We must ask ourselves:
Can we still use these words so easily today? Has not the very meaning of
these words become somehow questionable? Have we not seen, in recent
years, too much negative propaganda railing against everything they mean,
or once meant?
The propaganda of these last years was a propaganda against all possible
meaning and against the questionable value of existence itself! In fact, these
years have sought to demonstrate the worthlessness of human life.
Since Kant, European thought has succeeded in making clear statements
about the true dignity of human beings: Kant himself, in the second
formulation of his categorical imperative, said that everything has its value,
but man has his dignityāa human being should never become a means to
an end. But already in the economic system of the last few decades, most
working people had been turned into mere means, degraded to become mere
tools for economic life. It was no longer work that was the means to an end,
a means for life or indeed a food for lifeārather it was a man and his life,
his vital energy, his āman power,ā that became this means to an end.
And then came the warāthe war in which the man and his life were now
even made a means for death."
How does it sound?
I understand the first part of what he said but the rest weren't words

Pneumothorax: nue-mo-tho-rax.
how much time does it take, if you live in the united states, to gain an american accent and naturally drop the native one?
do i have to make some kind of exercise in order to achieve it?
My mom came here about 20-25 years ago and has a mostly American accent but there is still a light hint of her old one
Just practice talking to other people
for now i only have other 9 months left here
i spent 1 and i improved a lot (thatās what people say) but i feel like my accent still sucks
I donāt really feel that accents make it hard to understand people
It depends on the intensity
when i first arrived it really was hard for people to understand me
since mainers use the final āuhā as āerā, my italian accent made me ununderstandable
now iām getting better
As
who are mainers?
??
It's not just time, it depends on what and how you learn about the specific accent, 3 years is a great time I'd say
I improved my accent in 2 years, but 3 years I felt that I'd learn all I needed to sound like a native. Pronunciation
Learn Pronunciation and listen to native speakers, try to imitate them with what you know about Pronunciation
i'd say 2 years is enough. Try to record yourself when you speak, listen to it and maybe make a little bit of adjustments
Hi
nope
Which continent?
The only problem is you don't really have a strong accent of anywhere specific
I will read this to you and you guess
"Manchester City Football Club, commonly referred to as Man City or simply City, is a professional football club based in Manchester, England. The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football."
so ?
@tulip remnant
Ooo that's tough, you pronounce some words like a Brit from the Midlands but I'm not sure like the way you said "football" sounded Southern English
You could've just learnt the English accent though
@delicate zodiac
so I am a mixture of British accents from the South?
Yeah, English though because you don't have any Welsh, Scottish or Irish in there
Am I close?
yeah
that's the whole point to hide my real identity
Fair
Never heard anyone pronounce City like you did
Usually Americans do a flap T
British say it with a true T
I think mostly true T , since there're 40 dialects total
No worries lol
Okay i will
Any advice on how I can improve with the pronounciation (i.e) "this thing"
like when a word ends with "s" end the next one starts with "th"
Used to have that exact problem
After the "s" sound, you need to push your tongue against your closed teeth to make that unvoiced "th"
Cause it's hard and inconvenient to rest your tongue between the teeth for the "th" sound in that case
Also one of the reasons, I produce the "th" sound putting my tongue against the top teeth
As most Americans do. Use YouGlish to see how Americans don't really have their tongues out for the "th"
@mystic tusk Here
Tips for reducing accent?
hey y'll.. trying to get that american accent, how am i doin so far?
open to feedbacks
here's the paragraph i read:
Every day brings new opportunities to learn. Sometimes changes are subtle, other times they're sudden, but each moment offers a chance to discover something new. Whether it's noticing a small detail or having a big realization, life is full of surprises. It's up to us to approach them with curiosity and an open mind.
Maybe he's going for the southern American accent
i don't get it, wdym exaggerating exactly?
probably but if standard then ye hes kind aexaggerating
ur pressuring ur throat ina kinda way
u need to let it flow
get it thanks but it would be great if ya showed me how its done with ur voice, the "let it flow thing"
Is google translate accent good to follow or is it exaggerating?
not yet wanting to do voice rec yet but anotehr time XD

if you are native English speaker, please DM me fast, i urgently need your help
HELP
what do you need to help with
heeeey
Why be so demanding?
I wouldn't say that was demanding. Demanding would be leaving out the "please" š
Do native speakers pronounce words "and" and "an" the same way (like the letter N)? If it's so, do they drop the "an" sound when the words "and" and "an" are connected? E.g. "I need a giraffe and an elephant" is it reads as "I need a giraffe 'N elephant"?
some of them will pronounce them as if they're the same
but actually "and" can be pronounced as N and "an" is Én
sometimes if i Need to pronounce 'and' very precise instead of saying it as 'an' i say 'an-duh'
not much weight on the duh though
and an
n Én
i think the listener could mistaken them as "an the" instead of "an-d" or "and"
"and" can be easily pronounced as "n", literally how you pronounce "n" in the alphabet
True
"n Én" can maybe connected in fast spoken english, but most of the cases i hear them clearly different
"i need a giraffe and an elephant" can be "I need a giraffe n Én elephant"
thats what i learnt from my own experience

Hello guys Iām spike inglish some helping me
Je parle franƧais mais jāaimerais beaucoup parler lāanglais
Hello Friends,
I hope youāre all doing well! I wanted to share some tips on improving English pronunciation, which can be quite challenging but also very rewarding. First, itās essential to listen carefully to native speakers through podcasts, movies, and songs, paying attention to how they pronounce words and the rhythm of their speech. Regular practice is crucial, so try to speak English every day, even if itās just reading out loud, and consider recording yourself to identify areas for improvement. Simplifying big words by breaking them down into syllables can make them easier to pronounce and help you understand their structure. Focus on difficult sounds, like the āthā sound, which might not exist in your native language, and practice these specifically to get more comfortable with them. Utilize pronunciation tools available online, such as dictionaries and apps that provide audio pronunciations, and mimic them. Itās also helpful to choose one accent, like British or American, and stick with it to maintain consistency in your pronunciation. Additionally, learning about stress and intonation in English can help convey meaning more effectively. Remember, improving pronunciation is a journey, and every small step counts. Keep practicing, and donāt be afraid to make mistakes theyāre part of the learning process! Best of luck to all of us on this journey to better English pronunciation!

You sound pretty American, maybe a slight accent
Your already good
If I ever meet you in real life or vc I would assuming your American or Canadian
where are you from?
Might be too self conscious then idk
sometimes I just get made fun of because of my accent so Iām really self aware of it
it's actually good
your accent is pretty good
Could def work on it with some shadowing no?
Thatās what Im planning on doing
And see if I make any progress
You pronounced 'fluent' a bit differently, and then you said something about achieving a neutral accent, but I'm not sure what exactly you said
Could be Canadian, but honestly, it sounds pretty neutral, so I can't say for sure
What would you recommend me do to sound more understandable?
Do you have any routines I could do?
You don't need to sound more understandable, you are understandable and your accent is good
Just relax - the more natural it sounds, the better. A forced American accent is worse than speaking with your own natural accent
Yeah I have severe social anxiety so my speech usually worsens when I talk to strangers
Like I can be fluent asf if I talk to someone Iām close to
Working on that but yea

hes basically claiming that if you read a book/passages and over exagerate your mouth movements while doing it for at least 10 mins a day that it will help you become better articulated and make your speech sound clearer
In this video, I share my experience of learning three different languages and explain why accent should never be considered a problem.
I had to learn two completely different sets of mouth movements before I had to learn a third set for the English language, causing me to have a very thick accent.
I explain how articulation, not accent, is th...
Sounds good to me, cause if you try to read at native's pace from the first try, then you'll stumble.
Yeah I did a little bit of research and thereās people that suggest not doing this since it can make you sound less natural/awkward
Idk tbh
I just want a routine that I can follow that will improve my articulation/fluency
I was thinking of just reading aloud as much as I can
And try to record myself

Hi
The most common pronunciations are š¬š§ COMF-tuh-ble (/ĖkŹmf.tÉ.bÉl/) and šŗšø COMF-tuh/ter-ble (/ĖkÉmf.tÉ.bÉl/ or /ĖkÉmf.tÉɹ.bÉl/).
Rarely you might hear š¬š§ COM-fuh-tuh-ble (/ĖkŹm.fÉ.tÉ.bÉl/) or šŗšø COM-fur-tuh-ble (/ĖkÉm.fÉɹ.tÉ.bÉl/) instead.
My teacher in college pronounced it as COM-fuh-tuh-ble, she did the same for vegetable veh-guh-tuh-ble
I wonder if it is because of the way her family says it or because people in society said it like that and she picked up on it
Depends on your meaning of āgoodā itās understood so good sounds French.
Ty bro
110% French
I'm not even a english native speaker
But I think your pronunciation is good
(Sorry, I forgot to deactivate the ping)
You aspirate the consonants and I think that there's no aspiration in french
Native english speakers, my pronounciation of final /t/ and /d/ is good?
Kit, kid

What is the right way to pronounce "beach"? I'm very afraid to use that word because my pronunciation is horrible and it sounds like that other word šššš
The difference will be pronouncing
Beach as beech as in prolonging the "e" sound
While with the other word its pronouncing "i" in a quick manner and prolonging the " ch"

Hey there! I'm creating a web app with ai. The idea is that the user pronounces American vowel sounds (just vowels and the American accent for now) and the app tells you the percentage of accuracy. This app is for a school project. I was wondering if native speakers of English from America could help me. I need audio files of 5 minutes for each American English vowel sound (without background noise and just the vowel sound without fillers). For those who what to help me, we can meet for 5 minutes and I can explain to you the 15 to 16 vowel sounds I need since I understand that as native speaker you may not be aware that they exist. I hope you can help me š. It's a school project, by the way.
Cool! Just one question, how would you compare two recordings and get the accuracy?
Iām assuming youād have to compare the spectrograms

Do you pronounce the "t" at the end of the word? Such as can't or what?
I hear some people pronounce it clearly and some people completely ignoring it
The proper way is to pronounce the ātā. For me, I pronounce it. However, accents and speech words can influence how it sounds.
Found it on google
Anyways I think this is what you can use for. ā British ā accent
Itās around Birmingham/Black Country
It seems the person who recorded it is dyslexic he told me
what are you saying-
Nvm I thought that was you lol
And dyslexic people can still speak properly š
this guy sounds autistic
Hello.
Please explain the pronunciation difference between "ear" and "year."
Thank you.
What's your native language?
There are audios in Wikipedia and you can see the IPA for help.
The diagram of vowel
I don't know how this is called
That's the general American English without margination of cot-caught
Japanese.
Ear is the "i" in Japanese plus English R
Year is the "y" in Japanese plus the "i" in words like: it, in, bit, etc. It's a fusion between "i" and "e" in Japanese
Thanks for your reply.
But I can't find the difference between /ea/ and /yea/
It's identical to me. š¢
Is this correct?
I was supposed this movie has got a jumpscare.

Black Country+brummie is just sad bro
Very interesting pronunciation
Can someone please tell me if I sound understandable?
"The curious cat quickly leapt across the cobblestone street, chasing a colorful butterfly that fluttered in the gentle autumn breeze."
this may be partly due to the audio quality, but I struggled to understand when you said "colorful" and "gentle". I had to read the sentence to figure out what you said on those two words.
Otherwise, you sound great. Your pronunciation is pretty good overall.

Pronunciation with what words exactly?
What is it?
fgs
Hii...I have a doubt regarding a tongue twister which goes "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood".. does the words 'would' and 'wood' sound exactly the same or is there some difference ?
hi, yes the words āwoodā and āwouldā sound almost exactly the same
in future, I would suggest googling any words you are unsure of and put ādefinitionā next to it in the search bar
just tap the audio icon and you can hear how it is pronounced
Yea i did that and they sound exactly the same, but my communication professor said 'would' sounds like 'vuod' whereas 'wood' as 'vud'
I didn't understand what he meant so I googled it and since they sound exactly the same, I got a little confused
Yeah, i don't know where your professor learned this... I'm a native speaker... I pronounce them exactly the same
and my search for pronunciations online seems to agree with me
Ikr.. i am not good in English but I used to pronounce them the same and suddenly my professor confused me into believing that they sound different š
the only exception is that there is a weak form of the pronunciation for 'would'
where you use the schwa sound for the vowel
but when stressed, they sound identical
Can you please send a voice note of u speaking "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck "
I think I pronounced 'woodchuck' awkwardly there, but it's fine
They sound the same to me
Yea it sounded a little light
That's the only difference between the two
You would never use the unstressed sound when saying 'wood'
Only for 'would'
Okayy sir , thank you
Help , I can't pronounce /i/ in bit
bit doesn't use /i/ though
it uses /ÉŖ/
Ye but I can't type it with my key board
often the KIT vowel is almost a schwa
I'm guessing you can do schwa
I donāt pronounce the j mate
Same here mate itās the same
I sometimes just prefer not saying the d in wood to differentiate them
how to pronounce Hierarchy
Baso
how to pronounce haider in british accent
haider?
????
2/10
3/10. Try pronouncing you "N's" more, along with your "T's"
How I should do it
That's too low how to improve š
you can be understood pretty easily. I would give you a 5. That 2 was entirely unreasonable
You have a noticeable accent, but it doesn't hinder communication
hay-der
Can you send voice notes in here I can speak it for you
great! I can tell you have an accent (Indian is my guess) but I can understand you perfectly. I'd say just be a bit more confident as you're a little quiet but that could be the microphone more than anything.
what are you on about
He asked to rate his accent
he said what are the flaws in the way I talk
and youve given a 2/10
can it be understood by everyone
yes it can
I mean yeah what's wrong in telling the truth
It's clear that he doesn't even know basic vowel sounds
He must improve and he doesn't really mind it, it was just a reality check
Start from vowel sounds
2/10 is too low
I could understand them easily at all parts but one
So? You want him to settle with that level of pronunciation?
I never said that
but 2/10 is too low
It was clear to you only because you were listening to it alone rn
It won't be clear if he was talking in the group chats
their pronunciation is fine. Your saying '2/10' is needlessly harsh
They have room for improvement
As do we all
But they could hold a conversation and be understood just fine
Itās the fact hes trying to defend the 2/10, so whats your version of 1/10?. 2/10 should be incomprehensible for which he is not. Anyways this has been totally blown out, but in short there is room for improvement
any tips? the 1st file is when I'm trying not to roll my r's and the second's the opposite
Could you write down that line?
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"
Okay so, I didn't hear an "x" in fox and sounded like fog to me
And try to put more emphasis on the "o" vowel in dog
this is the best I can do rn š
That was wayyy better
Slow and steady wins the race
I had to redo like 17 times because I kept forgetting to unroll the R in brown or kept pronouncing quick as quig, though I'm happy I finally managed to do it
hence the random emphasis on "quick"
Practice makes perfect
You last attempt was exceptional
thanks
Anytime!
You add a vowel to the end of 'dog', I think?
It should end on the g, nothing after
damn, you're right, there's a faint "yh" at the end
@hidden basin
ur saying skibudty

this is really good
Guys, any tips for accent reduction?
I have been trying to neutralise my accent for over few years now and I have had limited success. I improved a lot during the early days of practice but I can barely notice any significant change as of late, it's like I'm stuck.
Right I am mate
Donāt have one
Ok, thanks for letting me know š„²
