Unless it's Polish or eastern European, but the thing is the American accent is made of those nations accents.
You sound like me, because i come from the swedish area of usa
2nd
ah okay
So you know what i mean
polish is not like this
although ok maybe a bit
but if you listen to my mp3 from the past that i posted here, you'd notice the real polish accent lol
i honestly should try again and post something again, will think about this...
I won't find your clip so far back.
My accent is made of: (polish, irish by parents)+(scandanavian by birth region)+(us by early education)+(Australian/English by primary secondary schooling+ longest residential)
where does the polish part of your accent come from, like were your ancestors polish
Mother
ok my bad, you probably meant that both irish and polish were your parents
Grandparents
Yes
Maybe you will not find my clip, but i managed to myself
That's were we are
yeah i mean, that was supposed to be a link to the message...
h ttps://discord.com/channels/801609515391778826/852828327231750154/1138865244404461608
the same thing
I heard it
ah
very bad?
tbh now that i listened to it again, am unclear sometimes, at least two times
Yes, you have the same short of underlying sound as negative10. But i often think Polish and swedish are closely related sound wise, not necessarily language wise ofc. You have the strong sound of North Eastern Europe,
umm, you kind of made me terrified a bit cuz to the question "very bad?" you went with "Yes", but I agree cuz this all could be way more clear
The yes was related to my previous message. You managed to squeeze in your message in front of my yes. I take to long to type.
It was
I heard it. Yes,....
ah okay I see, what a relief then, solace filled my heart and all that
All is as it was. Time has resumed as normal.
To be honest I never really practised my accent, I am trying to make this clear based on what I heard in podcasts that I have been listening to for years now
Like this is not the most visible accent I had I think... when I hear other polish natives speaking english, they sound different than me, not very, but there is a difference in thickness lol
doesn't sound anything like my recording
haha
it kinda does for me but
idk
not sure what sounds alike haha
wait whats your native
swedish
ah yeah, i see
swedes dont have that slavic nasality
were I so nasal to you
and ur recording sounds distinctly slavic
not super nasal
but slavic for sure
it sounds good but clearly slavic
I think everyone has the sound of their own voice. Added to this is how they pronounce letters and syllables in their own language and local accent. When we try to learn a new language be that English, Japanese, Polish, Chinese, Spanish, we attempt out best to pronounce the way the native speakers do. But until we learn to pronounce each word, we still can be identified as not native. If the learned language has a small population, then the pronunciation differences in the population will be small and it will potentially be easier to sound native quicker. With a language with a large population, the difference will be greater and more varied, so it will be harder to lock in on a consistent set of pronunciation (the accent).
i think you're making it more complicated than it needs to be
there's a term for it, vowel sounds
an accent is just a set of vowel sounds consistent to a majority of speakers in a specific region, that's it
if you record their voices and run it through speech analysis software
soimethingl ike praat
I talk too much 🙅♀️
u will see their frequency is almost identical regardless if it's a woman or a man
deep voice or not
why vowel tho, sometimes consonants also differ, like british "city" vs american "city" which sounds almost like "cidy"
not vowel, vowel sound
it's different
literally just frequency
i also dont agree with big population = more accents
sweden has more distinct accents than the US for sure
not only more i nquantity, but more DISTINCT as well
if you go on twitch and watch a random american gamer, you won't be able to accurately guess where he's from
even if you are american
an isnane amount of young americans have teh exact same accent even if they live in different states
and i can prove this, when i posted my voice on askanamerican on reddit
everyone said i sound like their neighbour
some lived in texas, some lived in new york, some in california
they sound like, vomiting
Accent is a regional blend. Be that a town, state, country or continent. I won't deny there is a common sound across America or England or Australia, but as one travels through them the subtle difference become noticable of one travels further from ones base location.
I kinda wondered a bit what you meant by that nasality. And honestly, the more I think about this, the more I get you, cuz in my recordings this is not the highest nasality yet, but if I recall how my friends sound like in english, polish natives, they have higher nasality than me, by far, and yeah true
@finite sapphireyeah haha, just imitate what you think a russian sounds like
and you will see what i mean
seems it's only common in polish tho
oh yeah
polish preserved a lot from old slavic
even the grammar polish has is more "slavic" than russian, we still stick to 7 cases, while russians switched to 6
Nice chatting @finite sapphire @pliant aurora , but it's 3am so 🛏️👨🦯 for me
See ya later
yes thanks Peo and thanks negative programmer
good night
minecraft accent
It's a fine accent for speaking English. I can't place it, but that's not important. Could say maybe it sounds Canadian. Def not uk, aus, nz. As for sounding like a foreigner, ig that depends on what country, state, town you are in.... Pretty much 99% of the world, and that applies to everyone. Good work
Your English is very good also.
I think you sound like ur from NY or new jersey @river lance
also its weird, where are people saying this? do you live in the US?
some minor things stand out as... not sounding completely native
but def very very close
Any tips on improving my th sound?
Th on its own or in full words / sentences
for instance "length" "teeth"
they don't sound that bad when i say them but i feel like im doing smt wrong
words like that
Maybe try a tongue twisters like "
Three thin thieves thought a thousand thoughts" they help with practising the sound but if youre still not sure then you can watch some videos on how to make the sound properly
Will do
Tio of tongue on back of upper teeth. Blow and drop tongue down off the teeth.
That did it
Thankss
That man said, that that that that that man had written was wrong.
guys, what do ya’ll think abt the singaporean accent, i mean have ya’ll heard it b4, it’s pretty flat
keep saying “the” repeatedly for practice. Either that or when u need to say a word w the Th sound, curve your toungue and overlap your teeth. Act no need to curve, just put your toungue at the bottom of your front teeth. Hope this helpes ;)
i was friends with a girl from there
its not very heavy
but it was obv she was a foreigner
My team leader is from Singapore ,... Had the accent omg 🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️
Does it not depend on ethnicity?
The earth isn’t even flat Bruh
Do u take geography?
has tried it a thousand times, i can make the sound but it sounds so try-hardy, quiet, and just weird
Death by a thousand ths.
just reading it makes me stutter in every th
lol
@sacred badger
Anytime mate
Hi, how sound the word di-ver-sity. The di sound as i or e
d(eye)versity@gloomy pier
You have a very smooth sounding British accent, and i would have no clue that you came from any other part of the world based only on your voice. You bring up images of the actor Hugh Grant and his type of voice.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXEF7RjDyow&pp=ygUKSHVnaCBncmFudA%3D%3D
Hugh Grant tells Stephen about the many jobs he worked before pursuing a career in acting, including stints as an advertising copywriter and a bathroom cleaner. Stick around for more with Hugh Grant and watch his latest film, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” when it opens in theaters this Friday.

Also sorry of reminiscent of that British voice being used in a moderated way in Australia. It has a little bit of north east Australian accent on it (feeling 5%)
Hlo
Are you a linguist by any chance?
A large part of my work is with communication, legal, business process and documentation. But i would but not say i was a linguist.
Australia@opaque bay
Hello There,
also my microphone's not really good so pls bear with that weird noises
also, can u guys guess my nationality from my accent.
indo?
As a non-native speaker who is not very knowledgeable I'd say your pronunciation is very good, I'd say you're definitely near-native. If you keep practicing I think people may start thinking you are actually native. The only thing that I noticed is that the overall flow of the audio is kinda off (there are pauses in between thoughts and sometimes within thoughts) [All right,,well,,its been a while since ive been learning English as my,,second language] I think that if you improve your flow even if it costs speed, you will sound more natural.
native speakers may be able to spot things that I didnt though. Either way, Id say you are very near-native
Wording is also very important
How you describe things can indicate that this person is actually really good
As @fallen creek said, i think your pauses and some of the syllables in words are accented in alignment with your natural accent. Because you asked, I'll guess a South East Asian country, perhap Malaysia. (But your prob going to say Europe) 🙅♀️🧜♀️
Here is my latest recording btw, any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Vocaroo is a quick and easy way to share voice messages over the interwebs.
Noted 💯
Not from Malaysia.
Also not from Europe
very difficult to pinpoint where you're from and that in itself should be seen as a compliment. I'd say that you're from an Arabic speaking country but i really have no clue
I really like your accent. It's more like your own natural way of talking I guess.. clearly very understandable..
Not even from any of those Arabic speaking countries. 💯
Brazil actually
Ooh south America was gonna be my 2nd guess
Was gonna say spain
Your accent/pronunciation is not something to be really heavily critiqued
However
You seem to repeat yourself a lot
My pronunciation, the way i speak English, etc
You've been dwelling on that point for far too long,
I would just say, this is a recording to compare my pronunciation with the previous one, this is my current pronunciation, my goal by doing all of this is to improve, your freedback would be appreciated.
indeed putting aside pronunciation, I also feel like I need to work on my speaking in itself
now that I think about it, I do that in my native language too lmao
I do that too
But i learned to stop repeating myself
I only repeat a point if it wasn't understood the first time, the move on
Dwelling on a single part can bore the listener and interrupt their focus
The flow of listening to your thoughts
Its hard to keep up with someone who's not sharing his thoughts very smoothly, as in a very clean sequence.
that is true actually my wife sometimes gets vexxed because it can also come across as if you are underestimating the listeners intelligence as if the listener is dumb and needs to be told the same thing multiple times
@sacred badger are you a native English speaker?
That's actually not a bad take
Yeah, that is true
Nope
What's your thoughts on my audio..
I'm just curious coz u sound like a very knowledgeable person.. about these language stuff
Not fully American, can notice the asian or European accent kicking in, ur flow is nice, though u tend to pause a lot at the wrong sentences (probably due to how fast u talk) i can understand everything you said
Overall listening to u wouldn't be a problem to me
My only advice is for you to speak slower so that you feel more in control of what you're saying
If you pause a lot it means that you're either talking too fast, or you don't have enough vocabulary to include in your speech.
Just try to synchronize both your thoughts and speech
Too much water and it'll spill, too little water and it won't be enough
I would say both lol.. I speak too fast. Also I just started learning English like I'm a beginner
Not enough vocabulary
💯 accurate...
I'll keep that in mind dude
Thankyou so much..
Np
lol
If I just listened to this without any other context I could never tell you're non-native. Are you even non-native to begin with? sounds excellent
Is it just me. Or is the British accent really hard to understand ?
Man u sound like a British guy.. I don't really know why I have a hard time understanding British English.
When it comes to improving your pronunciation is shadowing really the best method out there?
it works
depending on the person of course, it is certainly the best to build the flow of thoughts and speech and thinking in the target language
Not exactly shadowing, but pretty much the same. Find your target voice, play a sentence, say it, repeat until your happy, move into next sentence.
Shadowing requires a lot of thinking and only gives one chance with hard words as you are moving through continuous speech.
@fallen creek
G'day
Shadowing is what I'm doing to reduce my native accent and put on some American accents..
It helps. Perhaps a little bit.
Not that I don't wanna say it.
But I'd rather be anonymous here😊
Because we all live next door?
I know this statement didn't make any sense
Tell me and delete
Just kidding... I'm from India..
First steps into fame and fortune
Where are you from ?
Are u a native?
Wdym ?
Aus
Now that you are not anonymous anymore, you can travel the world and be rich and famous
I was just kidding dude. I'm not anonymous. A lot of people already know where I'm from whom I had talked about in VC.
Since you are a native. Any tips on how to improve English skills?
Just use it, and keep reading about the difficult stuff
Tip for me also, learning other languages
Apart from reading, writing, speaking and shadowing
My biggest problem with language is vocabulary. I don't generally know enough words to join in any random conversation. So improving vocabulary is always #1, .. i swear by flash cards.
True.. but how do we know that we have enough vocabulary now... just go ahead and talk about random stuff now.
Every time we learn new things it still kinda feels like.. that's not it.. u still dont have enough vocabulary to talk about stuffs
I know i have very low Japanese vocabulary. <600 words. I cannot even join in a hello how are you conversation.
I can see that you have a very good vocabulary in English, but if you join in specialty conversations like biological engineering, it even computer science, the terminology may be absent. Similarly if you are not a cook at home, and decide to talk about cake baking, some of the tools and equipment may be missing from your head. At this point, i suppose you converse, and hard words you just ask to be explained, and hopefully expand memory and knowledge that way.
I believe that improving your vocabulary occurs naturally as you consume more and more English content, along with your pronunciations and so forth
Not gonna lie, there was this one time. I was talking with someone and she just started talking about cooking stuff.
And I was like interesting. well I don't know shit about cooking. So I just turned the topic by saying "well I tried cooking once and i almost ended by burning my hands".
i couldn't have said it better myself
That works
True...
Don't sweat it jean
keep doing what you're doing
@muted heath silly little question, but am I fluent or advanced? I'm really split on which role I should pick. You've heard me before, so I figured you're the right person to ask
I wasn't paying attention to how good you were and i wasn't trying to assess you, so i can't rightly say, at this moment
@full patrol
Understandable
Would ask u the same @muted heath
Idk about myself, fluent or native 🙅♀️
lols
for all
Speak and be fluent
being nervous is my biggest problem so far
Nah, I'd rather stay a beginner...
You'll get there one day bud
So then people won't expect much from me.. since I have a beginner tag
I hope so...
Where u from dude @full patrol ?
Egypt
born in jordan
living in egypt
Wow
So i read half of your posts, and you appear to be fluent. Just one mistake that almost demoted my opinion, but it could have been a typo. You definitely use a 104 fullsize keyboard.
Thats true i do use a fullsize keyboard
Also you said one mistake almost made you change your mind?
what are you referring to exactly?
Send a recording
i sent like 4 before
Talk random stuff
first one was kinda of a mess
my head hurts like a bitch rn so no chance sadly
Ohh ok
Alright @unborn drum @full patrol an assessment question, but I'll ask @unborn drum To answer first.
Alrighty
Here goes
Alright
There are a pile of note books in the table. They belong to the 5 people standing in the room. All 5 people have the same job. They are each an attorney general in the state they come from. How do i write the possessive form for the people and the note books using the title?
go on jean
@unborn drum you here?
Wait wait wait
Dm me @full patrol now
okay
I definitely understood the question
Dm me @unborn drum
Ok
Is it related to some grammar thingy?
You asked if you were fluent or advanced, so a pop quiz
It's kinda weird for me.. although I can speak a little bit of English.. but I HAVE never learnt any grammar..
Oooooo, i want to participate in that too, where do i sign ?
Like books ? Since it's 5 ?
Dude I'm bad at this
Dm me an answer
Yes
An answer for what ?
Was that correct ?
This @sacred badger
Adding "s"
Tell me in dm
Is that a puzzle ?
Or a grammar question
Either way i suck at both
😅
Not a puzzle, just trying to get a grammatical answer without using the answer to ask it.
Im gonna be honest, i don't really understand it
Can u explain it differently ?
Your question
What is the plural possesive form for a bunch of people who have the title attorney general?
@sacred badger
Dm will let others try
@muted heath may I dm you one of my recordings?
True lol
She's awesome
Could someone judge my accent please? I want to speak smother and not-so stoic like this one too 😅 Because I normally speak like this in real life
How do I improve my British accent.
by talking with a british
Your accent is pretty different from other people, but it's quite unique
Hey guys by any chance is there anyone who is studying computer science or graduate
Is it bad? I think it's Thai accent since I'm Thai
Listen to channel Radio (BrE) listening practice. Emulate the speakers there.
🖐️
Yo peo if you had to guess what accent does eminem have?
You are raising the inflection of the ending of each noun (/), or at every pause in your sentences. This is giving you a rhythmic sound that is not normal in native accents. Try and limit the up inflection to only very important words in the sentence. Try and keep a steady (--) mid tone otherwise.
Alaskan
@full patrol
🙅♀️
I don't listen to his voice. Just a song or two... Let me see
Sounds east Coast, perhaps a little south but not too far down.
Sort of like Will Smith
I still feel like it's new york and down.

My friend had a similar accent. I could only ever do it basically when he was speaking with me. It never stuck in my mind.
Kinda hard huh
I'll try my best
I want trying to get it permanently. I suppose if you listen to enough of it you will get it. The are probably a few words that will trigger the accent for you, if you can pick up what they are, that gives the general sound.
Will I do the shadowing technique when ever I listen to one of eminem's interviews
Well *
Stupid phone
I'm just listening now to see if there is something i can pick out
He tends to like skip the rs
Aint that the truth
Cracked phone screen 😭
I can barely see what I'm typing
Also I might be mistaken but I think he doesn't say the g at the end of every word
Like somethin'
Also very Sylvester Stallone, same accent
Shadowing is the best way to go about it right?
Yes, and i do this also.... @full patrol
I'll absolutely try this when I'm back home
May i ask your native language?
I feel i may have heard your voice. Did you post s recording here?
My memory is poor, but i was sure i had
Gonna send smt new tmrw with some type of accent that i can do
I really have no idea what accent is it
Lol
You did say that I sounded 65 us 35 native
To be fair though that first record was a mess
Kinda the same accent from the first record except "better" ig
You'll hear it tomorrow
So many mistakes 💀I cringed hearing that shit
Bye
You sound like albert Einstein, it's awesome! xD
9/10. Imitate was mispronounced.
Really good. I'd say instead of I would say is more used I think. 9/10
Thank you! And I wish I could be as smart as him too
Hi 👋

Cool ig

Ight huh

Cool ig
Let's just say I'm gonna take what you just said with a massive grain of salt

Obviously you don't have a great ear for accents so yeah
I don't wanna go to the us
Nope, wanna get an American axent?
Yeah
Ight, standard?
As in?
So I could have a fair pick on ya audio
No Accent within US
Just centered
No weird pronunciation accepted
In those records I was just speaking but atm I'm trying to get the new York accent
Okok
That guy you have 9/10 had like 10💀
Really?
For the record he's a complete random I found on reddit
Raddit
I heard a sound off
He sounded like those Arabs who try to imitate the American accent but it just sounds like a bunch of noise
Here Bryan read this
The guy is using like 5 accents at once 😭
I see
Hey u sound great
There is a lot of stuff that I gotta fix tho
I think I sound pretty bad if we draw a comparison
I'll be the judge of that
Sure
Ight
Also peo will definitely be here to judge it
Who
She's awesome
Native?
Ask her when she gets on
Why the long face tiger
This is cringe 😬
That's me speaking as casually as possible
Good way to tell I can't pronounce Teacher

I could nitpick many things on that video myself

Wdu think?
Not so unbearable
I never liked my own videos, unscripted work of shit
I'd like to make some actual good videos, but I'm just not on the content creation boat, need some structure.
@full patrol
I promise, new content will be put up there
Not so shitty
back
you sound good buddy
make sure to send smt when peo is on
she'll tell you what u have to work on exactly
I already know

What is it then?
Let's agree to disagree
. .. tomorrow
I think, i understand what they may be saying. I feel that you posted the same clip twice in those 4. It confused me also.
👨🦯🪗
The "alright" part?
I'm quite confused ngl
Some fades and transitions between the video clips

That video is trash
what do u think? XD
I want to be nice to listen to only
Right pronunciation also
I aim for a south semi-centered US accent
I actually love and try to get other users into phonetics

LOL
I am so flattered
Send your voice man/mam'

nope, if you feel I do better now, u can surpass me
you sound calm and collected
when i try to record smt i get so fucking nervous its unreal
huh
It does not make u sound better though
how come
...
when you're calm you can think of shit way more easily
We have to talk In a VC to share something bout that
sure thing
oh i get you
i talk abit fast so when im abit more relaxed or "Calm" i pronounce shit abit wrong
Just gotta hit the nail on the head
U can still speak fast, just in the right way
mmmmkay might record a lil smt off the top of my head
It's my passion, listening to Natives Speakers of English speak so smoothly and still be comprehensible it's just orgasmic
I think once you're able to take that and apply it to your speech u can be sure that most stuff u say WILL be comprehensibe
Coz', if a Native said it that way u can copy and do so too
okay hold on a min
ight
You got a fine speaking voice there. English is great. I'm labeling accents from people I've met in the past, and who come into mind when i hear an accent. So I'm going to say you have a Kentucky accent. If I'm wrong, it's been a long time since i ever heard that voice, but it's American. Be happy. (Unless you are trying to sound british that is). Your second clip sort of reminded me of Seinfeld.

: O
I once talked to a girl from Kentucky and man!, I had an Instant crush, so nice
is kentucky chicken
yes
nice
should have made fried chicken out of her
😭
@muted heath @river lance
I wish I could hear her again
I fell a simp for her

I think while you want the eminem new york accent, you probably really need to lose the eminem gangsta character attitude wording, as it hiding what could be a good ny sound. I think slowing down as you did, did not sound all that convincing. A little staged. Sorry for the review.
Think "Matthew" Eminem
lmao
should i record smt
with a normal accent
I speak Spanish
Is that the show?
Seinfeld
?
I think we could use a couple of phonemes that will get u soundin better
im all ears buddy
...
?
nah
I hear the "o's"
u talking about me?
it happened to me once in my life too, i mean, the context was totally different, but the idea stays the same
For the record i never said i sounded like a native or "spectacular" ik i don't sound that amazing
are not pronounced like I'd pronounce em
Damn bryan you so helpful
Que rico= What a great feeling
sarcasm
I just dug up a Seinfeld on ytube, and after listening to a minute or so, just went back and listened to lol clip. You have a que Kentucky voice that sounded nothing like Seinfeld. But then when you got to the but about the other guy and his bad pronunciation, that really went seinfeld... To the point i quickly went back and matched... I guess it's just when you get excited in your story, that's the Seinfeld expression.
@muted heath
u did not used that phoneme
care to explain this in a record rq
and Exactly was said with E
I will try to, I'm a bit busy
how did you come up with "did not used"
Are you mocking his grammar 😭
no
I do speak diffently when telling a story
Or a joke
am interrogating, like the way you would interrogate a murderer

I thought of "didn't but did something else"
it is more like igzaklee
a for as in cat
ae
it's a bit weird
yes sir
just like that
that "t" right there could be droped
that's what I mean as passion
Nope XD LOL
imma just shoot my self at this point 😭
I mean it's so good but is a small detail
HAHAHHAHAHA
buddy you gotta be more specfic when you talk over text
Ure just havin the same thoughts as me
there is so many times where i go like what is he even talking about
hold a moment, I am actually so busy in a call
so I'm half way here
what is so good 😭
srry
9/10
that exactly?
yes
Maybe it's not Eminem I'm hearing. I think it's just you. With that in mind, I've reimagined your image, but i guess it's just a little thin on content and you are trying to make up works and it's obvious that you are just padding time. This is probably why you are sounding like you are struggling to sound like you genuinely are conversing... But maybe try giving a one minute speech on a topic you know a lot about, as if you had to give a lecture and the lecture was for a well paid business job... Marketing manager ...
My life long belief has always been, you can be anything (make anyone Believe you are something) as long as you believe you belong there. Your voice will change as you imagine different situations you are in. So try the marketing manager job application lecture. See what happens...
OMG
ay
i'll get on that
RN
Egg sac ly. 🥚
😭
come to think of it
it does sound like that
dropping the t was a mistake
I say. .. x saktly
That's totally fine
keep it that way eh?
got it chief
@muted heath
im gonna go in 5 min
contribute was pronounced WRONG
Electricity is out but I can chat on phone
Ok. That was much better. A more natural message without the overly exaggerated subcultural overlay (until the end when it went back into that). But with the main message, it is clear that your native accent is very strong and i think your 'cool' voice overlay is potentially giving you a false confidence that you have a strong American accent. I think you have put in place verbal mannerisms to be 'slay', but when this is stripped away and you have a normal conversation, one can now see that you have missed placing as strong an accent on your pronunciation as you would have hoped for.
I guess i would think that what most people want when they say they want a particular accent, is an ability to fit in and not be noticed as being a foreigner in a new land. The biggest benefit of knowing how to speak well with a foreign language is the ability to pull in better job opportunities for more money and a better lifestyle (my view ofc). Don't waste time with the subculture voice. Focus on getting a regular or professional vernacular and get that New York accent applied to your voice. It will be much easier to hear yourself and your progress. Maybe listen to news on https://edition.cnn.com/

You have minor pronunciation issues and some of your words are mumbled together but overall it is okay. ( pay attention to @muted heath ‘s feedback as I am not able to go in to detail like that. ( kudos to you Peo)
" i think your 'cool' voice overlay is potentially giving you a false confidence that you have a strong American accent" i don't believe that really yk
native accent is very strong huh
can't do nothing about it ig
ain't that a kick in the head
One thing i might ask
how much work do i have to do
from what i just read i have a WHOLE LOTTA work to do
Also what did you mean by sub culture voice
first time seeing that word ever being used so excuse me
You can do something about it. It's change the pronunciation of some of the phonemes as Bryan indicated. I think the are just some sounds that you need to translate, to reduce your old accent and increase the desired accent.
about those phonemes
do i have to like go through them all
or what
i really have no idea what im messing up atm
"I think you have put in place verbal mannerisms to be 'slay'" Elaborate
i think i get it but just to make sure
Thats about it?
a couple of phonemes?
A subculture is a group of people with different ideologies and usually fashion and music tastes then that of the larger culture they are a part of. Many subcultures also detest the "mainstream" and commercialization. Several subcultures flourish because of the almost genetic need for people to belong, most notably youth. Because of this, many c...
Oh that
When you went off the record, you introduced a shitload of swearing into your sentences. Why for?
Lets just say this is a problem i have to get fixed
i really really don't know why the hell i drop the f bomb so much
listening to hip hop that much is prob the reason
i promise i'll try my best to make it as minimal as possible or stop entirely
this
Is this really the only thing i have to get right to sound "good"?
i feel like there gotta be more to it yk
You don't need to stop altogether. Use it in the right setting. Perhaps in English classes or in this server, this is hindering people's ability to give better feedback, to help speed up your accent development.
I feel like it makes the person listening to you think that you don't have a good grip on the language
i might be wrong
I use it often as well, but i also have a 'Clark Kent' mode.
Very classy ay
So if you had to sum it up
where im i at
in terms of sounding "Good"
the record was kinda rushed cause electricity was gonna die in 5 min so i just did it real quick
Yes. That is possible, which is why you should use it where others are using it, but not where people don't use it...
It's just fitting in
Yeah me dropping it like 3 times at the end was abit overkill
it seems interesting for me, like, i do not use swear words at all, almost, neither in my native nor in english, for me it makes me immediately uncomfortable when the speaker is just dropping them very frequently, or frequently to begin with, like i put up with some being used somewhere along the way, but not too often
You're egyptian right
polish
i meant negative

I don't know
I think u Pronunciation good, just a bit missing
Mine is just not there 😕, we actually share couple things in common
Your English is fine. I'm not familiar with your original accent. I've not heard many people from your country who speak English, so would not be able to say your from wherever (Egypt). But there is an accent nevertheless.
I've said this previously here to others, but there is nothing wrong with speaking English or any other language with an accent that you have grown up with. You will naturally pick up accents from area of the world you eventually live in, and these will modify how you speak over your life time.
I personally have a scandanavian influenced US accent that sounds Canadian to most people of the world I speak to, but at the same time an American would say it's not American, my residential country where i have lived, say it's American, but also say i have an Irish accent at times, which i do. To people from outside my resident country, i have an influenced accent of my resident country. In the end, i just speak, and an not embarrassed by my voice. It's me. It's a good conversation piece when meeting new people.
Phonetic systems are SO similar
Im trying to fix up my accent bec im afraid i'll get judged for it
kinda petty but anyway
people here are nice some times too nice other servers im in id get clowned on so hard for my accent
They'll ship their pans
9/11 jokes 🔥
show them how you can speak with no swearing lol
I'm bad
: ] demonic joke
I shouldn't sweat it basically
We can fix it 😏
U always care more about understanding than speaking 🔊
Ik im understandable i wanna sound real nice while doing it
But given that English is literally the lingua franca of the world
Well
No need to sweat it
We'll work on it
and i sound abysmal some times
That makes the two of us pal
I'll do my best to see what you can apply 😌 😉
i listened to those recordings and the swearing makes it so much worse lol
exactly
why on god's green earth did i drop 4 f bombs at the end
Speaking Japanese with a thick Australian accent just sounds stupid. I attempt to pronounce my Japanese ass i hear Japanese speak it. There is no difference to you trying to speak English as 350 million people speak English. It's just a way of perfecting the language. I think you are well developed in promising English so that it does not sound Arabic. But there is still an underlying difference. I to would be easily picked up in Japan, as while it does not sound like aussie, it is still just missing localized pronunciation differences that locals will hear. That is so I'm saying i hear in your voice.
so unnecessary
maybe you had some need to react out the stress and tension you accumulated
yeah im so damn tensed up when im doing those records
for me i used to learn jp too, and it was quite funny cuz my R's were the most harsh ever, every japanese would immediately feel am slavic or something
but communication is the priority
I'll check out the phonemes stuff and try to record myself a bit more often to narrow it all down and find out what I mess up the most. Also, a huge flipping thanks to you peo; you've been great to me since I joined this server, always helpful and so thorough with the feedback. Again, massive thanks to ya
that got deleted so quick
🙅♀️
prsctice

You're the boss, boss
Ure so close I can hear it, but... just a bit of more study that's all, not practice but knowledge 👌
As u said, take my commentary as a grain of salt
I take that back actually
Nothing I say is the definitive answer, but I do wanna help
you were so right i was blinded by my ego
Well 5am. ... 🛏️🧜♀️
Drowsy times
Ciao
Later
:hehe_:coffee~1:

You're getting the chair

buddy
Goodnight
yk what
you sound like a native to me so stop with that crap
i ain't hear a single mistake in any of your records
you're good
i was about to intervene again and say it is acually "make mistakes" but i would sound like an mosquito buzzing around your ears lmao
youre both great
idk why you all worry so much
i don't wanna get clowned on
thats it
nothing more nothing less
and maybe prove to my friend from la that i can sound good
last time he asked me to speak i got so nervous and fucked up so bad so that is that
maybe it is an endless cycle of trying to please someone, and that urge of pleasing someone makes you nervous, and then you wanna please them even more
i'll work on it little by little
not sweating it is key like peo said
(ik she didn't say that exactly but it sounded like it)
anyway
time to sleep
Catch yall later
im begining to feel like a rap god rap god all my people from the backyard and a laptop
idfk rememer the lyrics
remember
😭
i can rap some of his songs word for word tho
im cool!!!
jk
anyway kitty cat
catch you around
cuz am the real cat kitty, yeah am the real cat kitty, all you other cat kitties are just imitating
U talkin' bout me?
Yes
That's the thing, u can't hear it
So we need to get to the point where you can
Meaning it must be minor
Coz I hear it myself
There is some times where it's obvious
I've been listening and consuming English content for 5 years
That's good
Just recently I decided to give my accent some attention

We bought an old house, my boyfriend and I. He’s in charge of the “new” construction – converting the kitchen in to the master bedroom for instance, while I’m on wallpaper removal duty. The previous owner papered EVERY wall and CEILING! Removing it is brutal, but oddly satisfying. The best feeling is getting a long peel, similar to your skin when you’re peeling from a sunburn. I don’t know about you but I kinda make a game of peeling, on the hunt for the longest piece before it rips.Under a corner section of paper in every room is a person’s name and a date. Curiosity got the best of me one night when I Googled one of the names and discovered the person was actually a missing person, the missing date matching the date under the wallpaper! The next day, I made a list of all the names and dates. Sure enough each name was for a missing person with dates to match. We notified the police who naturally sent out the crime scene team. I overhead one tech say “yup, it’s human.” Human? What’s human? “Ma’am, where is the material you removed from the walls already? This isn’t wallpaper you were removing.”

pls don't judge the text choice 😭
I had already read all the texts in the pins here in another English learning server. This was one that was pinned recently there...
I'm hoping I might be able to get some help with the intonation
My native language is Portuguese and English's rhythm is super different comparatively...
True
Hello everyone. I just sharing. I have already attended online Toastmasters event in every country. From there I could know they spoke English well, not very well. Becauses there are region accent (in case Asia Toastmasters). And Carribean Toastmasters was very good. They are native English speaker and feel like America although they invaded by Britain. I suggest you to join online Toastmasters event on Facebook as a guest.
@restive bolt The main sound that stuck out, was the 'ee' as in peel, feel and ceiling. You are pronouncing it something like 'A', giving a pale sound for the word.
You are making this sound
It should be this sound
Otherwise all sounds great as is.
@quick fulcrum
how can i pronounce establishment
thanks a lot dude.
Hello
Hello
How is every thing with you
such an enticing convo you two just had
Story time for beginner English.
Is this a insult 😭 (sorry im abit slow)
actually nvm
Yawn
i thought of that while buying smt for my grandma rn
english is kinda tricky sometimes
specially when its ur second
It's not an insult. It's just a statement about the brief nature of the interaction. It is therefore suitable for reading by beginner English students because it is so simple.
got it
How to pronounce further, especially '-ther'
Here are 3 English people and 3 Americans saying it, and after each I've copied just the "ther"
I've tried to find examples with increasing speed for each 3
For the first group, the end sounds exactly like the word "the"
For the second, the end is a voiced th-sound + an r-sound. There is not much of a separate vowel to speak of, the r-sound is the core of the syllable. If you're learning anything like general American, try to go from the th-sound to the r-sound with as little of a gap as possible
Whereas in most kinds of England English, you don't need to worry about any r-sounds (unless the next word starts with a vowel), but you do need to make sure the vowel in "fur" is noticeably longer than the one in "ther"
If you're learning something else entirely then ask and I'll see what I know
thank you!
how to upload my recording
Is like this?
You've pronounced the 1st r but not the 2nd (should have both of them, or neither of them), and the th sounded like an l
Something like "furla"
For the th, make sure the tip of your tongue goes to the back side of your top front teeth, and gets close enough to make a buzzing noise
Oh how unfortunate,i'm dropping my audio file but the moment it gets sent it is automatically removed.
I guess it was because of the format error. You can translate to MP3.
If you can't upload files for whatever reason, you can use vocaroo
Website where you upload audio and then can share a link to it with people
like 'mp3' is called "format" right?
Ye
Bro i just listened to my own recording and i sound like some drunk drug addict 💀
Nobody likes listening to their own voice lol
Alright so i took my text from a previous member and i modified it a bit
Here it is

Also sorry for the weird "R"s i'm just too used to it in my native language
Gotta fix that yk
like mp3 to mp4 format, I should how to call it? switch or translate or else? I don't know.
I can relate💀
Convert
It sounds like you're aiming for Scottish but way overdoing the R, among other things lol
(if that is actually what you want then that's fine and I can help with that)
Yes i kinda am aiming for the scottish accent because it kinda makes my life easier lol
Im lerning english lately and i want u guys to judge my accent
Nice, I'll give you proper feedback tomorrow (hopefully) and I'll make a recording also
For now must sleep

Another thing I like about Murray house is that you can relish in the magnificent sea view right after having a look at the architectural style. You don’t even have to walk a minute,it is extremely convenient. If you’re into fishing ,you can bring your fishing equipment with you during the visit as well so that you can fish by the sea. So, considering all these factors, I personally find Murray house worth a visit.
I tried to do all those intonation stuff but I still have an obvious accent, why is that?

It is your thirteenth birthday, and as with all twelve preceding it, something feels missing from your life. The game presently eluding you is only the latest sleight of hand in the repertoire of an unseen riddler, one to engender a sense not of mirth, but of lack. His coarse schemes are those less of a prankster than a common pickpocket. His riddle is Absence itself. It is a mystery dispersing altogether, like the moon's faint reflection, with even one pebble of inquiry dropped in its black well. It is the most diabolical riddle of all.
"Absence diminishes little passions and increases great ones, as wind extinguishes candles and fans a fire." -Walt Whitman
Yes, you are certain Walt Whitman said that. One hundred percent positive.
You have a feeling it's going to be a long day.
@muted heath Is it normal that 90% of the grammar I use is all by sense? I don't actually know any of the grammar rules or stuff; I just know that this or that sounds right, so I type it, and 99% of the time I'm right
I think it's normal. Once you use it s lot, you will not conciously think about it. It will just happen. The concepts have been established in your mind
Can anyone please, judge my accent?
Without knowing you were not native, i would say the voice presents fine with a north American accent. Just a slight 'whispy' sound, but that may have been you trying to talk quietly, or the mic. You did lose that sound in the text following 'you are walt whitman... ". Clearer
Just a couple of words with odd pronunciation... as with, Repertoire, eluding, schemes, mystery, in particular. Few pauses for the long words, but nothing unusual for someone reading them in a hard passage. Very good.
can anyone judge my accent (im native but where im from people from other places can find it hard to understand me)
Sure
can you give me something to read out thatll help thanks
Okay let me see
thanks
