Better listen to speakers with your target accent, otherwise your accent might be mixed

Overall, it's fairly easy to understand you but you need to work on your rhythm. I understand that you are reading, so naturally there are lots of pauses, but having a long pause at the wrong time makes it difficult for the listener to follow. You are talking about (William Somerset) Maugham. I had to double check the pronunciation of his name. It's one syllable, like mom or mawm. If you want more feedback let me know. I'm Canadian. Your pronunciation is more British.

stoic plinth
# winter epoch <:shy_Im:963771375158456360>

great rhythm on the first recording. At the beginning, your pronunciation of "north" is very clear but later on when you say it the th needs to be stronger. It's easy to understand you. Maybe some words (the content words) need a little more stress.

stoic plinth
# waxen topaz

I would say your pronunciation is more British. You need to work on your "th" sound. If you don't, you will sound Irish. And that's ok, if that's what you want.

the individual sounds are pretty good, the largest point your accent is lacking is intonation. you're sometimes stressing the wrong words/syllables, but this is easy to correct if you listen to a bunch of comprehensible input and mimic the accent. imo you've already done most of the hard word (your R is pretty good)

#

@river lance Overall, well done. I think I understood over 90% of what you meant, but there are some specific words you need to work on. I think you speak very quickly in your native language, so you want to read faster but are trying to slow down. Your rhythm is pretty good. You are emphasizing most of the content words well, keep that up. If you slow down, just a little bit more, that should help. Your English level is probably really high, but these pronunciation problems that you face might be frustrating for you, because you want to zoom through conversations. If you zoom through conversations, your audience will be frustrated with you. Here are some of the words you NEED to practise: deserted, territory, fleece (the c sounds like a s not z), a goose (it sounded like you said accused), dog or a (sounded like dark); itchy goose (sounded like issue); trap (sounded like crap); ether (unvoiced th, you made voiced th, so it almost sounded like either), vet's (you said wets).

# river lance https://voca.ro/17Z5YIdmWUTx judge my accent?

First of all, you have an incredible narration voice WTF!! Second are you sure you're not a native English speaker from the US? That was incredibly good! There were some times where I did have a hard time understanding what you were saying, especially at the beginning, you were describing something too quick for me to understand. There's some times when I feel like you don't pronounce the end of the words or you pronounce it very slowly. Like the "five" word at the end. You need to pronounce the words all the way through. I really can't place where you might be from originally. Denmark?

#

8.7/10. Would definitely listen to you narrate a book 🙌🏻

river lance
# stoic plinth <@456226577798135808> Overall, well done. I think I understood over 90% of what ...

than you so much, yup that's correct i speak fast in my native language, yup that's right i am a fast talker and a fast reader so i am trying slow my speech a little bit down. secondly where i come from we don't actually have english r's so those are the hardest for me pronounce in words like mirror and territory or wherever there is a cluster of r's, it's just is the hardest thing for me to do. Thirdly, we don't have th sounds in my language so it's bit of a challenge to do that as well. that's why vets sounded like wets but that is something i am trying to improve upon. and again thank you so much.

@kindred niche@soft owl Thanks! Appreciate it. I was born in Sweden, still live here. Never been to the US and I've never actively worked on my accent, kinda just had it since I was a kid

#

I watched a lot of american TV when i was a kid so i guess i had some early exposure

#

never thought that of my voice, though, haha. Also I think your criticism is spot on @kindred niche , I do slow down my speech a lil bit when im reading. i think it sounds more fluent and natural when it's off the cuff

Hey

#

Um I still can’t figure out how to post something here

#

Meaning an audio file

#

I guess this is the way. Wannabe American English 😂

steep kayak
#

Honestly not happy with this take but it is what it is 😊

frail roost
#

You have a pretty good accent :)

soft owl
#

slightly more nasally than average, but perfectly within the range of american speakers. sorry for the nitpicking, its just that you're very close to indistinguishable from native so I imagine you're looking to get all the way there

steep kayak
#

Thanks 🙏 yeah that’s true I’m trying to get to American level. Actually I’m trying to find Americans to speak with, nothing against foreigners of course but it’s just my goal.

#

I tried to read something too. I slip up a little 😂

river lance
#

@steep kayakYou sound 100% swedish

#

I'd almost be willing to bet money your mother tongue is swedish

#

at least in the second clip

steep kayak
#

Hahah don’t say that I’m trying to perfect my accent 😂😂😂

#

Yeah I’m Swedish 😊

river lance
#

you sound better than most swedes for sure, but i can still hear the swedish in your accent

#

it's the vowel placement

#

the resonance in your voice

steep kayak
#

Thanks 😊

#

Yeah I guess 😂 one day I’ll get rid of it 👋

river lance
#

very hard to get rid of but it's possible i think

#

but you need to understand what's making you sound swedish

#

in order to erase that from your speech

steep kayak
#

I think it’s possible since I have a good base according to me

#

I’m not sure if it’s possible for everyone but for me yeah

river lance
#

yeah but what are you shooting for? what's your goal

steep kayak
#

Idk 🤷‍♂️

#

Well honestly I want to sound like a native as close as possible. Being like 90% there would be fine. I’m probably like 70-80 there now.

#

Right now I’m listing to New York news and podcasts

#

Some days are better than others too when it comes to my accent

#

But I still make mistakes for sure

river lance
#

yeah i think 90% is doable

#

it's the last 10% that's almost impossible

steep kayak
#

Well idk really

#

I got the benefit of knowing more than just Swedish so I think it sort of has helped me in the beginning

#

Doing sounds etc that swedes sometimes has a problem with.

river lance
#

yeah, probably but like I said the last 10% are really hard

steep kayak
#

But really this is all just speculation

#

However I’m trying to find Americans to speak with too. Nothing against foreigners at all

river lance
#

it makes sense though, there are thousands of accents and they all emerge out of the tiny oral cavity that is your mouth

#

the difference between two vowel sounds is literally just millimeters

steep kayak
#

Also lately it seems like my throat sort of is doing a workout almost. I know it’s sounds weird but like it’s getting trained for those sounds

river lance
#

yeah do that, im swedish

#

your throat should be relaxed when doing an american accent i think

steep kayak
#

That’s not what I’m saying

#

It is relaxed when I speak

#

But it sort of feels like muscles are being worked out too

#

Idk if that makes sense

river lance
#

yeah maybe, but the brunt of the work should be done by the tongue

#

different vowel sounds are literally just different frequencies

#

manipulated within the mouth

#

mostly by the tongue

steep kayak
#

I have already eliminated some small mistakes so I’m making progress

river lance
#

yeah that's good keep going

steep kayak
#

Mostly melody stuff. Intonation if you will 😂

river lance
#

yeah that's pretty hard too but it's not the biggest issue

#

the biggest issue is actually the vowel sounds

#

you can try it out yourself

#

if you listen to an american rattlin goff a bunch of words

#

there's almost no melody or intonation at all

#

but the words consist of vowel sounds native to that specific accent

#

it's very hard to imitate even single words

#

an american would be able to tell if you're american even off of just an isolated word

#

not you specifically

#

but in general

steep kayak
#

It’s interesting 😊

river lance
#

this guy's got a pretty neutral accent

steep kayak
#

In general I think most Swedes can get to a native level. Especially today when I believe most schools actually hire Americans as English teachers. I was in school way before that was norm 😂. I think our math teacher or something was also our English teacher

river lance
#

same, i was born in 94

#

most teachers sucked and had several differnet classes

#

but i never actively tried to learn english

#

i just always had an american accent

steep kayak
#

Yeah me too

river lance
#

but i have to say i've never heard a swedish person with a 100% native-like american accent

steep kayak
#

I have

river lance
#

i haven't, i'm very close myself but i've never heard it

#

i can sniff out accents in a second

#

just from one vowel

steep kayak
#

I have heard like 3 people with American accents

river lance
#

show me

steep kayak
#

Well I Only Have access to one but he is a rapper 😂

#

Allyawan

river lance
#

oh, he's pretty close

#

not perfect, voice too nasal

#

but i know allyawan

#

used to be the only swedish rapper i listened to

steep kayak
#

Around 4 😂

#

Minute mark

river lance
#

yeah he's very close, i can't really tell he's swedish but i've never heard an american with that voice or vowel frequency

#

i feel like he's kinda exaggerating his accent

#

to sound like a gangbanger

steep kayak
#

I have 2 heard other people. One that sounded amazingly American. A girl

#

But this is in person

#

😂

#

Well he’s a rapper too so doesn’t really help his cause I guess

#

Then I have heard other Swedes in America with an American accent but that doesn’t count

river lance
#

this is me

#

fun fact, i used to rap too

steep kayak
#

Sounds good

#

Not everyone speaks like that though. Seems people overseas think that 😂

river lance
#

what do you mean?

steep kayak
#

Not all Americans have what I would count as the news accent

#

Obviously it’s not but still

river lance
#

it kinda defaults to that when you're reading out loud

#

sounds a lil less stilted

#

@agile sequoia100% natural

#

it was always my accent, since i was a kid

#

i grew up on the hollywood accent so it might be a little "news-cast"-y but yeah

#

yeah but not actively

#

just watched a lot of tv with my family

#

since i was like 4

#

yeah, i think that sounds better too

steep kayak
#

Yeah that’s a really good accent

#

I would be happy to sound like that for sure

river lance
#

i'd like to learn some uk accent

#

but there are so many

#

very easy to slip into a different accent

#

I think the best thing you can do is play around with different vowel sounds

#

record yourself

#

try forcing some sounds

#

and then see which sounds more american to your ears

#

record it and you will easily spot the difference

steep kayak
#

Cool 😎

#

I already started practicing but I started like 3 days ago

#

So obviously you don’t hear the results

#

And I think you can nail a UK accent 😊

#

I don’t believe in people who says stuff is impossible etc

#

I think it’s possible but it takes work and maybe more smart practice

you are pronouncing pretty much every individual word correctly (mayyybe the word 'emergencies' is slightly off if im being nitpicky, you kind of failed to pronounce the third e "emergencies". also the t in "political" sounds like a "d" in an american accent)

Your accent sounds great! However, it sounded like you weren't opening your mouth much, and words could be more articulated. Focus on marking the vowels more strongly and also pay attention to how each vowel blends to each consonant: "clouds, guards, erased, suffering, spirit, breath". Try to read the words slowly and focus on how much you're opening your mouth for each sound.

But.... that's how my Californian friends said I should pronouncei t

#

Like, I used to say 'ay'

ancient ravine
tropic rampart
#

After which, Americans from both coasts gathered to tell me to repent.

ancient ravine
#

Ay is correct

tropic rampart
#

and say it like an 'a'

#

No it isn't lol

ancient ravine
#

However I heard something more like ah

ancient ravine
#

English has dialects where vowels are pronounced differently

tropic rampart
#

Like, Americans only say 'ay' to stress a particular word

#

When I was young, I originally learned English from a Canadian. That is probably the reason why I used to pronounce a like ay.

ancient ravine
#

My dialect for example, is very similar to Californian English but except I have Canadian raising, little French, a little New York influence and little Scottish influence

tropic rampart
#

And only recently me and my friends figured out that saying 'ay' was inconsistent with an American accent.

#

Or at least they didn't notice it as much.

ancient ravine
#

Well most of Canadian English dialects

#

Americans pronounce it differently

#

It’s more whiney

tropic rampart
#

Yeah, but I really want to focus on a specific dialect. Ideally I'd like to develop my own dialect at some point but I want to know one dialect perfectly before that.

Lancashire isn't a city, it is a county. But that's cool that you were doing your GCSEs here. Where are you from originally ?

#

I’m from Hong Kong

#

How to learn the British accent tho😅

#

Cool, Well first things first you need to get rid if the idea of a 'British accent' that doesn't exist

#

Really?😯 how come?

#

Well you need to know that when you say "Britain" or "British" you are referring to 3 countries which all have very different accents to each other and within those countries there are many different accents. When people think of a "British accent" they are thinking of RP or the Queen's English but now it is more Southern (London) Standard English.

#

Oh I’ve heard of RP before. Received Pronunciation, right?

#

Yeah

#

I can still hear people speaking the London accent in some places

#

Yeah, Received pronunciation seems to be more and more common now.
I say I have a Northern English accent not Northern British because saying Northern British wouldn't be right and because the North of Britain is Scotland which is a place im not from 😀

#

Oh right yeah I understand it now. But after three years, I still didnt have the English accent😅

The existence of someone to practice with isn't required, you can talk in English fluently with no partner, the presence of some people to talk to is just a way of measuring how fleunt you are, and overcoming your fear of talking in a foreign language! You can improve by listening to some English youtubers, watching your favorite series or movie in English... Ect, most importantly you use this language even if it was with yourself only.. Good luck!
NOTE:
this is how it works to me, you might not find this way soo helpful... But give it a shot!

I still keep in mind a certain wonderful sunset I witnessed when steamboating was new to me. A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating black and conspicuous, in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings that were as many-tinted as an opal; where the ruddy flush was faintest, was a smooth spot that was covered with graceful circles and radiating lines, ever so delicately traced; the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the somber shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver; and high above the forest wall a clean-stemmed dead tree waved a single leafy bough that glowed like a flame in the unobstructed splendor that was flowing from the sun. There were graceful curves, reflected images, woody heights, soft distances; and over the whole scene, far and near, the dissolving lights drifted steadily, enriching it every passing moment with new marvels of coloring.

#

I stood like one bewitched. I drank it in, in a speechless rapture. The world was new to me, and I had never seen anything like this at home. But as I have said, a day came when I began to cease from noting the glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the river's face; another day came when I ceased altogether to note them. Then, if that sunset scene had been repeated, I should have looked upon it without rapture, and should have commented upon it, inwardly, after this fashion: "this sun means that we are going to have wind tomorrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebody's steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; those tumbling "boils" show a dissolving bar and a changing channel there; the lines and circles in the slick water over yonder are a warning that that troublesome place is shoaling up dangerously. No, the romance and beauty were all gone from the river.

working daily at an old zoo in a deserted district of the territory, so she was
very happy to start a new job at a superb private practice in North Square near
the Duke Street Tower. That area was much nearer for her and more to her
liking. Even so, on her first morning, she felt stressed. She ate a bowl of
porridge, checked herself in the mirror and washed her face in a hurry. Then
she put on a plain yellow dress and a fleece jacket, picked up her kit and
headed for work.
When she got there, there was a woman with a goose waiting for her. The
woman gave Sarah an official letter from the vet. The letter implied that the
animal could be suffering from a rare form of foot and mouth disease, which
was surprising, because normally you would only expect to see it in a dog or
a goat. Sarah was sentimental, so this made her feel sorry for the beautiful
bird.
Before long, that itchy goose began to strut around the office like a lunatic,
which made an unsanitary mess. The goose's owner, Mary Harrison, kept
calling, "Comma, Comma," which Sarah thought was an odd choice for a
name. Comma was strong and huge, so it would take some force to trap her,
but Sarah had a different idea. First she tried gently stroking the goose's lower
back with her palm, then singing a tune to her. Finally, she administered ether.
Her efforts were not futile. In no time, the goose began to tire, so Sarah was
able to hold on to Comma and give her a relaxing bath.
Once Sarah had managed to bathe the goose, she wiped her off with a cloth
and laid her on her right side. Then Sarah confirmed the vet’s diagnosis.
Almost immediately, she remembered an effective treatment that required her
to measure out a lot of medicine. Sarah warned that this course of treatment
might be expensive – either five or six times the cost of penicillin. I can’t
imagine paying so much, but Mrs. Harrison – a millionaire lawyer – thought
it was a fair price for a cure.```

I do not mean to discourage you, but only 30% of all you said was understandable

  1. Your short vowel sounds are way too long

  2. Your 'sh' sounds are plain 's' sounds

  3. Your 'b' sounds like a 'v' in some places, like the word 'urban'

  4. Your diphthongs (sounds of two vowels connected in the same syllable) in some places sound monophthongal (only one vowel sound)

  5. You don't seem to be pausing at the commas and the full stops but rather at random words.

  6. Working on your intonation will go a long way in helping you sound 'native'

  7. There are some sounds that you are making like a native; if you were to work on and fix the above mistakes, you'd sound like one in no time.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice without pictures or conversation?'
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

Good. I, as a native speaker, understood everything. But sometimes I had to think for a second because the pronunciation was a bit off on some words. One word I noticed that your pronunciation can improve on is the word familiar. You were putting the stress on the first part of it, making it sound like fam-yill-er. Put the stress on the IL part of it and pronounce it more like fumm-ill-ee-er. But otherwise, good job 👍

There was once upon a time an old goat who had seven little kids, and loved them with all the love of a mother for her children. One day she wanted to go into the forest and fetch some food. So she called all seven to her and said, dear children, I have to go into the forest, be on your guard against the wolf, if he comes in, he will devour you all - skin, hair, and everything. The wretch often disguises himself, but you will know him at once by his rough voice and his black feet. The kids said, dear mother, we will take good care of ourselves, you may go away without any anxiety. Then the old one bleated, and went on her way with an easy mind. It was not long before some one knocked at the house-door and called, open the door, dear children, your mother is here, and has brought something back with her for each of you. But the little kids knew that it was the wolf, by the rough voice. We will not open the door, cried they, you are not our mother. She has a soft, pleasant voice, but your voice is rough, you are the wolf. Then the wolf went away to a shopkeeper and bought himself a great lump of chalk, ate this and made his voice soft with it. The he came back, knocked at the door of the house, and called, open the door, dear children, your mother is here and has brought something back with her for each of you. But the wolf had laid his black paws against the window, and the children saw them and cried, we will not open the door, our mother has not black feet like you, you are the wolf. Then the wolf ran to a baker and said, I have hurt my feet, rub some dough over them for me. And when the baker had rubbed his feet over, he ran to the miller and said, strew some white meal over my feet for me. The miller thought to himself, the wolf wants to deceive someone, and refused, but the wolf said, if you will not do it, I will devour you.```

The death of Cleopatra VII, the last ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, occurred on either 10 or 12 August, 30 BC, in Alexandria, when she was 39 years old. According to popular belief, Cleopatra killed herself by allowing an asp (Egyptian cobra) to bite her, but for the Roman-era writers Strabo, Plutarch, and Cassius Dio, Cleopatra poisoned herself using either a toxic ointment or by introducing the poison with a sharp implement such as a hairpin. Modern scholars debate the validity of ancient reports involving snakebites as the cause of death and if she was murdered or not. Some academics hypothesize that her Roman political rival Octavian forced her to kill herself in a manner of her choosing. The location of Cleopatra's tomb is unknown. It was recorded that Octavian allowed for her and her husband, the Roman politician and general Mark Antony, who stabbed himself with a sword, to be buried together properly.

Cleopatra's death effectively ended the final war of the Roman Republic between the remaining triumvirs Octavian and Antony, in which Cleopatra aligned herself with Antony, father to three of her children. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt following their loss at the 31 BC Battle of Actium in Roman Greece, after which Octavian invaded Egypt and defeated their forces. Committing suicide allowed her to avoid the humiliation of being paraded as a prisoner in a Roman triumph celebrating the military victories of Octavian, who would become Rome's first emperor in 27 BC and be known as Augustus.

Tears were slowly showing on her face and the emotion of sadness suddenly overwhelmed her. She couldn’t stop herself from bursting out. He was lifeless in her arms. His body slowly got cold as his colour was leaving. He no longer has a soul. His dull eyes were staring into oblivion. Her father exchanged his life for hers. He fought till his last breath. It was over in a flash, a big sword pierced through his body hitting his vitals and killing him within seconds. Poor girl had to see her father’s death and now she’s holding his corpse hoping she’s in a dream. Her friend dragged her as she groaned and cried uncontrollably. Memories flooded her mind as she blankly stared. They had such a great time. He fulfilled both parent roles, she never felt a thirst for her mother, she only needed him. AN IMPORTANT PASSENGER ON THE TAURUS EXPRESS It was five o'clock on a winter's morning in Syria. Alongside the platform at Aleppo stood the train grandly designated in railway guides as the Taurus Express. It consisted of a kitchen and dining-car, a sleeping-car and two local coaches. By the step leading up into the sleeping-car stood a young French lieutenant, resplendent in uniform conversing, with a small man muffled up to the ears of whom nothing was visible but a pink-tipped nose and the two points of an upward-curled moustache. It was freezingly cold, and this job of seeing off a distinguished stranger was not one to be envied, but Lieutenant Dubosc performed his part manfully. Graceful phrases fell from his lips in polished French. Not that he knew what it was all about. There had been rumours, of course, as there always were in such cases. The General's—his General's—temper had grown worse and worse. And then there had come this Belgian stranger—all the way from England, it seemed. There had been a week—a week of curious tensity.

Hi guys

I didn’t do it, if I understood it correctly, sometimes that I made some stress was a kind of expression, because Sometimes you “need” to pretend that you’re acting in order to make/force you pronunciation like a native, forcing your brain to scape from your native language. Then after that, listening to yourself, you start to sculpting the details. I didn’t make it “on each word”.

# river lance can i learn american accent?

Anyone can learn an accent! Especially an American accent because it is widely considered to be the easiest English accent. If you really want to improve on your accent then I recommend listening to podcasts or TV shows that have American people casted in it. Like "The Joe Rogan Experience" for a podcast, or watching a TV show like "Friends". There are tons of media you can listen to! You just have to find the one that is best suited to you.
