if it's first person narrating & not speaking, no quotation marks are needed
He just doesn't understand. He knows nothing. I stormed into the dim room, storming past through all my belongings while they proceeded to stir into an unrecognizable mess as I jumped onto the bed, summoning a loud thud! Everything flew into me, as I fell into a deep thought regarding my father and family. I began asking myself if I was doing something right. I wondered how my dad raised me as a single father. Losing my mother when I was young has affected me severely, but it must've affected him tremendously more than me. Yet he still keeps up with my bullshit. Ugh! I yelled in disgust at myself, as I stuck my head inside my pillow wanting to forget. But I can’t forget all the things I've done. I'm a horrible child, I really am. As my school complaints stacked in the letterbox. Suspension papers, class complaints, you name it, and it's there. Seeing my buddy Nate do something horrendous by offering smoke to random girls on crummy streets filled with litter as my group proceeds to corrupt it every day. But today he did something horrendous, some girl didn’t agree, and he was extremely violent today. -He proceeds to grab her by the hips forcefully. "Stop it Nate" I exclaimed. He let go, and he turned his head towards me, emitting an intense fierce glare. He lunged at me grabbing me by the collar.“Listen here you dipshit, I make the rules here.” Nate proceeds to throw me across the ground. My other friends, whom I considered to be my friends, had decided to gang up and lunge at me. I let out an invigorating savage scream, as I struggled and grabbed their leg to attempt to twist it or pull him down
im still tryna make a catalyst for the mc to change.

I stormed into the dim room, storming past through all my belongings while they proceeded to stir into an unrecognizable mess as I jumped onto the bed, summoning a loud thud!

no need to say storm twice
if you want the first paragraph its here As I knead dough, perfecting it through every swift, smooth motion. I forget about my problems. This run-down bakery and house. Gloomy and dark. It feels uninvited though it's my own home. As I attempt to light a shine in this home of mine. My son Jake creates this hostile ambience as he returns home, wrecked up in an unnatural manner. I can smell a wisp of smoke on his dirty worn down shirt, every single time he enters that door. I can tell he's been somewhere, probably with them kids again. He tends to give me a thoughtful glare. “You’ve been hanging out with them haven’t ya” I yelled. As he flinches away, and grunts with an angry expression. He quickly runs upstairs and slams the door shut in a thunderous manner. As the dough’s perfection dulled, it turned into a heavy mess, making it unable to be kneaded anymore with its flawed scar-like appearance. I decided to refine it to something else; bagels, everybody loves bagels. This dough exhibited how something can manifest into something new and change into something different.
Im tryna attempt different povs
and it just changes characters.
here and there.
Dw i labeled it fine
just attempting to assimilate the idea from a book called simple gift. Which we studied on class. Which changed povs between characters.
As I knead dough, perfecting it through every swift, smooth motion, I forget about my problems. This run-down, gloomy and dark bakery and house feels uninvited even though it's my own home. As I attempt to light a shine in this home of mine. (wtf is going on) My son Jake creates this hostile ambience as he returns home, wrecked up in an unnatural manner. I can smell a wisp of smoke on his dirty worn down shirt, every single time he enters that door. I can tell he's been somewhere, probably with them kids again. i'm currently beta reading and editing quite a few pieces, with one of them containing absolutely no grammar and no structuring so i don't think that i can help you tonight
plus i have to go through a few hundred documents ;-;
its fine you already did enough

hmm at least I didn't get the no on grammar and structuring, I think anyways.
what's bill?
bill means the same as beak
so this must be talking about some bird creature or whatever
no it's plautapys bear
in what context
i know sap can be used to refer to the liquid that comes out of tree branches if you cut them
sap can also be a verb
meaning something similar to "drain"
it also has a bunch of archaic definitions
i don't believe these saps
probably either of these https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sap
someone who is spilling out their guts about how they feel and such you can be a sap when you are talking about how you feel about love life etc

oh that's a mistake
what are fae/faer pronouns?
He has performed acceptably without "having had to think"
I understand this sentence but how does it(having had to think) work?
what means kike?
ohh Vietnamese
You have gerunds which are V-ing. Typically you will use them when the action is happening at the same time as another action:
"Walking back home, he saw a cat." => This means he saw a cat while he was walking back home. Two actions happened at the same time
Then you have the 'past' version of a gerund, which is "having V-ed/V3". It works the same way as past perfect, which is to talk about an action that happened before another one in the past:
"Having walked back home, he saw a cat." => This means he saw a cat when he had already arrived at this home. He walked back home first, then he saw the cat.
So, in your case with "having had to think", the next phrase will be some action that the person decides to do after they've had time to think and made up their mind
'Don't you wrong or right me'
It means like don't judge me?
something like that yes. It's more like "I don't want to hear your opinion about what I did/said"
Hi
Which is correct and why?
"Do you often (discuss/argue)with people in your office? About what?"
Can someone help me to solve a task for my class test its about the future progressive. Dm me pls

all of this can be googled in 1 second dude why bother asking here and waiting for an answer
:|
Give us an example with context
Hey guys, why do we use being in I'm not being stupid?
Why not
"i am not stupid" and "i am not being stupid" aren't the same, its a different meaning entirely
so I want to know what's the difference, zelassin?
i'm not stupid means stupid in general, means you're not a dumb person
i'm not BEING stupid means stupid in this one particular instance
for example you could use the same construction with "funny"
i'm not funny means you're just not a funny person in general, but "i'm not being funny" means that in this particular moment you are not trying to make a joke
So.... Smart..,.x..

🤣🤣
Is it surprising that people ask English related questions in #📚|english-questions ?
^^
the surprising part is not that you ask questions, its where you ask them
a simple definition question is answered way faster on google
it doesn't make sense to ask here and wait for an answer, sometimes for hours, when google will give it to you within a second
and sometimes google is wrong, or maybe you don't understand what they say on google, then you can come here and talk to real people
talking to people is definitely better in my opinion
it's a bad habit
if you get a job and start asking everyone simple questions instead of looking them up you'll just get fired or yelled at
I agree, most of the questions here can be easily answered with a google search. I don't think some even tried to look it up by themselves before asking
so usually I don't answer that kinda question
typing.....
imo when your question looks like something that belongs in a google search bar, then it really should be asked there
so anything and everything basically
not really
people come here just asking "What is the definition of X"
no context, no effort
that's a google question
I think so, you can search up literally anything on the Internet and in some form you WILL get the answer you seek
maybe these guys just want to speak with someone
well we do have a very active general chat room i guess
rationalizing bad learning habits is not productive and encourages people to continue doing it
don't
i will admit that i come from a computer science background where asking simple questions instead of using google or documentation is heavily discouraged
i guess i've been conditioned to look for answers on my own first before resorting to asking people directly
well it promotes an environment where people learn on their own and only bother their seniors for important questions rather than everything they don't instantly understand
but is it a "good thing" or a "bad thing" depends only on your own perspective
ultimately it means that the senior workers spend more time on their direct assignments and the companies don't have to pay as much for tutoring
but it may also lead to people new to the job feeling frustrated
which eventually leads to only those who are willing to abide these rules remaining in the field
sounds like it's a lot more beneficial to the corporations than to the workers
consider this
"i went for a walk yesterday"
you wouldn't say "went you" in response
this is basically a trick question because "had you" can indeed be used, but only in the past perfect tense
they wanted to trick you into using "had you" because you know it sounds right since it exists, but in this case it's "did you" because the sentence is in past simple
there's a second part to this though, the "auxiliary verb vs main verb" thing
Basically, questions in english start with auxiliary verbs that correspond to the previous statements/the situation
and while "have" can be an auxiliary verb, in your case it's the main verb, and the auxiliary verb would be "did"
@flat rune is it
“he does!!? He steals every day?”
Or
“He does!!? He steal everyday??”
The first one
Does he steal everyday?
Question always use Verb 1
More examples
- Does she work? yes she does
- Does it cost? yes it costs
*Does he steal every day?
I thought you were trying to say like yeh he does!! He steals every day.. but as 7 said if it's a question then it shud be like does he steal every day? and the answer would be yes he does.. he steals every day blablabla
"He steals? Every day?"
This option is preferred due to how it sounds like spoken English.
Hi
I have also mailed my file to xyz@gmail.com
is it correct?
What's smh
"don't say that like you've been obsessed with someone" or "don't say that like you've been obsessed over someone"
@vocal pollen :3
Either works

I like maths, computer science, and physics and stuff
here the simple go-to form of doing stuff is: Painstakingly study, you idiot
Very true!
I guess put questions that can be discussed over-?
Hell it could very productive and even fun
I guess I will just throw a google search result here in the answers whenever i feel that should've been the desirable approach
Either I'll get banned or people will understand
What do you mean ? like can be discussed to a point of the moment when people are like "why are we even discussing this?"
Yeah I tend to do that too 🤣🤣

I have a question for any Native English speakers or anyone that studied English in College or University
When referring to the word "the" in a sentence and want to emphasise it, why do we say "Thee" like how we pronounce the word "see" ?
Like this
where does it come from
I USED GOOGLE FOR IT
The question Is now moot
I want to learn british accent but
1- I'm more prone to American accent
2- I'm more likely to use american accent
3- I tend to use american accent more
Which one am i supposed to say?
What’s the difference between scrutinize and examine/inspect
- I tend to use American accent more
I’m tend doesn’t work since it’s a verb in its base form
Ohh yeye
And tend needs a direct object (“use” in this case) since it’s a transitive type of verb
prone is used mostly for negative/unpleasant things
2nd one is not grammatically wrong (I think) but “tend”, I feel like, is more appropriate than “more likely”
So I think the 3rd one, “I tend to use American accent more” is the most appropriate compared to the other sentences
日本人ですか?僕はハーフです
3 ig
none of them are grammatically incorrect
ig prone to american accent is weird
prone to using american accent would've been better
but idk if its grammatically incorrect
3, everything else sounds WEIRD
^
Oh, was it the “I’m more likely” part? Would it be grammatically correct if it was “I would be more likely”?
Well yeah, all of them may be wrong but you got what i meant, right? So what am i supposed to say in this situationnn?? (≧▽≦)
3
Which one is correct? 1. She helped me do my homework. 2. She helped me to do my homework. 3. She helped me doing my homework.
1
Does that mean that the two other choices are wrong??
The 3rd one is wrong but I’m not really sure about the 2nd one
I think the 2nd one is not grammatically incorrect, but is unnecessary
Thanks
Hi! Everyone. I have a problem here and need some help from the English native speaker. I am writing a story and trying to create one noun word to describe "people who without totem". Is anti-totemist or non-totemist or non-totemier or something else? i am not sure. If you have any idea pls let me know! thx!
(Disclaimer: I am not a native English speaker, so you can kinda take what I say with some grains of salt, so anyone, feel free to correct me, I would really appreciate it.) I guess out of the words that you’ve listed, “non-totemist” feels the most fitting one. “non-totemier” sounds like someone who doesn’t do “totem”.
“anti-totemist” is like someone who is against totems
Or you could write “non-totemist” in quotation marks in your writing if you’re not sure, or if you don’t think it’s an official term. I think it’s called the “scare quotes”
Totemless is what I would use, but it lacks originality
What I would do is come up with a fictional name for the totem(s), then use that with -less to make it sound a bit cooler lol. That's what I'm doing in my own story as well
You can also go with the linguistic route and use the suffix a-, as in 'atotem', to refer to these people
For context, a- means 'no, none', as in asexual, atheist,...
ohhhhhh!!! that’s very helpful! thx. one more question is it a noun or adj?
It can be both
Cool!!! thanks for your help!
And you!! thanks!!! seems i have some difference advices now. it help a lot.
Sure
Could try to be super hipsterish and use sans-totem
Single-family house and detached house is the same?
scrutinize is like, a way of saying "inspecting/examining every little detail down to the last spec of dust"
or "really inspecting/examining"
hello! is this sentence correct?
"I wanna live my life at the maximum"
lemme know if there is a better expression to use here
ty
"to the max" works too
Ah okay thank you!
what's the difference between "office" and "agency"?
‘’’How often do people ask you to do something and you just reply, “Sure thing.” Three days later, you're overwhelmed by how much is on your to-do list. We become frustrated by our obligations even though we were the ones who said yes to them in the first place.
It's worth asking if things are necessary. Many of them are not, and a simple “no” will be more productive than whatever work the most efficient person can muster.’’’
How is “muster” used in that context?
Do you guys frequently use this phrase ? "In the ascendant"
And also I can't distinguish between a firm and company. If you can help me that would be great
An office is a room typically where business or work is done but like, mostly on paper and on a computer
an agency is an actual group, that does some sort of bureaucratic task
muster here or in general typically means like, what can you bring together, or in this context, how much work can someone get done
hope this helps
tl;dr firms are typically smaller but more professional than companies
but a firm can also be a company lmao
Ah, got it
“He was here to get a feel for/of the place” are both prepositions (for and of) interchangeable in this case?
“Whenever possible I devoured local newspapers, trying to get a feel for the politics and social conditions of each place”
Is it incorrect to use the past tense “devoured” here because “Whenever possible” hints that it is talking about a reoccurring activity?
Found the last sentence in example sentences in Longman dictionary
I have a grammar question. Do I say, "You have obtained a World Tree leaf!" or "You have obtained a World Tree's leaf!"?
@flat rune is this correct
“It feels so good but hurt so bad”
Is it supposed to be “hurts so bad” or “ hurt so bad”
is this email ok
Hello Mr. Black,
here is my blog entry I have attached.
Best wishes
Colloquially, yes, it is fine.
You should not use "devoured" in this sentence.
Devour is eating.
"To the fullest" is correct.
"At the maximum" means you want to live your life only at the final year you die, which makes little sense.
Those "figurative" uses refer to something being torn apart utterly or annihilated.
Unless you are literally eating newspapers, it is best to not use it.
How about this? Are these two okay? @flat rune
"Hurt a lot" is better. "Hurts so bad" feels awkward to me.
Well umm it’s actually a lyrics of a song and it’s like this
“Why does it feel so good but hurts so bad”
Im just not sure if it’s
“Hurts so bad” or “hurt so bad”
“It feels so good but hurts so bad”
I think “hurts” would be the grammatically correct one since “it” is a singular pronoun
Hence why I said "colloquially".
Songs in English do not normally mirror formal grammar.
Ah okay, thanks. Is it okay to use verbs in past tense after “Whenever possible”?
Is "bawl" a word used in UK mostly?
No.
Not really. It's used all over.
Thanks!
The first one would be correct.
The second one is correct, but only when the definite article is used and/or when the genitive case is being used(I think).
So it is the first option in this case.
What about when it’s just “Whenever” like “Whenever I heard this music, I felt excited”
That is well.
Thankss
During the war, three British fighter planes collided ------- Lea Valley
With/In/over/ into
Can anyone give me input on this fill in the blanks question?
My tutor insists on it being "with" but I can't make sense of his answer, I answered "over"
I would say "over" too but "into" could also fit if it doesn't mention anything about another aircraft
Thats all the context available it was an exam question
nvm "three British fighter planes"
Anyways tysm dude
All the love from Syria
What is/are the difference(s) between “hazard” and “threat”?
“A potential hazard to the people”
“A potential threat to the people”
can someone tell me if this sentence is correct
"you would have met like a thousands of people"
can you give me any advice to improve my "listening" level?
"are you asking me to go steady"
what it means
oh, you're right.
sorry
wear somebody down. what it means
To keep saying or doing something that makes them physically or mentally weak
You can change the speed if possible to a video you're watching and then listen to it at the normal speed. You could probably try to listen to a video at normal speed and write down what you hear then listen to it slowly to see if you got it right

_My vacation has been started three days ago

Okay thanks

Excuse me everyone, I will test TOEIC for next year. What should I practice first for improving my skill??
@flat rune is this correct “no actually, it makes me irritated”
Or irritate
Coz umm someone asked me if i like sitting in a bus with someone
But it jus irritates me whenever someone sits besides me
I've never taken that test, but I can tell you what I do to improve my English
Read a lot
There are several grammatical books that are available for free
Try to obtain as much vocabulary as possible
And I think practicing TOEIC free online tests'd help
I just dunno what should i use
“Irritated” or “irritate”
I think you can answer 'it irritates me/it irritated me'
Your usage of the verb is correct from what I can tell
If you're not sure whether you're using it correctly, just look up the verb's conjugation
@plain crag Oh so what’s the difference between “it makes me irritate” and “it makes me irritated”
The first one is incorrect, and the second one is correct
Ohh thankyou
@plain crag is it “in your following” or “on your following” on insta
Put it in a sentence, please
All the people in/on my following are my friends
Both are correct
I can't really explain it
In can be used for when you refer to a specific person That's somewhere in the middle of your following
On refers to all the people on the following
In is not always correct in some cases, so I recommend using on
Nah, wait, only on is correct here
Ohh okay okay thankyou!
Here's an example that will show you how to use in
"He's the third in my following"
This sentence refers to something in between the list
But when you're referring to something at the end or the beginning, only on would be correct
Yes.
Oh got it tnx
Thankyou!
@flat rune wait another one is it “cap (🧢) saves the night” or cap (🧢 ) save the night”
??
Oh it’s a Thankyou hehe
Oh wait why does it have always
Wait lemme change it
you dont ask me but issok
Hello
hey, I would like to know when we are using this word : whom
thank you
whom is an objective form of who
you use whom when you want to use "who" but as the object of an action, not the subject of it
like "who apologised" vs "apologised to whom"
and the best example would probably be "for whom the bell tolls" by Metallica
tysm for your explanation!
Who and whom is confusing
helloo. are "to stack" and "to pile up" interchangeable?
Indeed, if you are using the same meaning here
Hi all. I have a question about "always". "Always the years between us". What is this sentence means?
@supple holly is it privates or private
“This guy private/s his videos so you can’t see anything on his profile”
If you treat it as a verb, add -s since the subject is a singular noun
So privates
Thankyou
Privates when verb
(even tho you didnt ask me)
I'm confused if I should either use from or to
Ohhh I’ll ask for ur help nextime hihi
not really
willing is like meh i can do that
Idk eager to me always seems enthusiastic
they do
in?
Hey guys, is it hope for something from someone or of someone? Or are both options acceptable?
Which is correct
1 prick holes in the balloon
2 prick holes on the balloon
I have heard someone saying" that's an actual Aussie moment right there." In this context, it was talking about the reaction of an Aussie. So I think "moment" means reaction. But I searched it in the dictionary and found that it means a short time or occasion. This confuse me. Does "moment" means reaction? Or other meaning?
nope xd
Probably because the “i” wasn't capital
Maybe
Ooof
Hello fellas 🌸
hi
Are you mention me or other? ^°
I doubt
Prick is more related to pain
Maybe use poke
Poke hole in the ballon
Moment means a very short period of time
For example:
Can you wait a moment?
He paused and thought for a moment.
The word "lasagna" has always got me
Why is it lasagnA in American English and lasagnE in British English?
It is not even an English word!!!
@stone magnet !! Is it think or thought
“I haven’t think/thought of a name yet”
how do I improve my listening especially when it comes to fast british english talking
in Sherlock
cuz I can't really follow them
without subtitles in eng
it Italian, ‘lasagne’ is the plural name given to flat, rectangular pieces of pasta. Whereas ‘lasagna’ is actually the singular form of ‘lasagne.’
Most pasta dishes in Italian is referred to by their 'plural' name
Why? Because it involves more than one ingredient
Just in America people spell it is lasagna
Outside everywhere else i believe it's lasagne
For example Take spaghetti. One piece of spaghetti is actually called spaghetto.
Whether you spell it with an A or an an E, pronounciation is same

in the United States we use the singular version because we do not say 'linguino' or 'spaghetto.
I believe this comes with listening practice 😄
Start with something easier
but I can't even imagine how theoritcally can i improve it
cuz
i will be always hearing the same non sense
should i rewind? i have. but I can't get it
can I say ' you forgot to light this off ' meaning to turn off lights
Thanks for your detailed respond!
Hey guys what is mean "You're the bus"?
I believe you mean "You're the boss?"
Oh i don't know there was writing like that (on subtitles)
In that case, it was most likely wrongly transcribed.
A question about sentence syntax. Can someone tell me if the following question is grammatically and syntactically correct?
Sentence: This spell allowed the user to transform into any race he had encountered before, even a drow!
Yeah "You're the boss" is matching with scene. So I think it's wrong transcribed.
This spell allows the user to transform into any race he has encountered until now -- even into a Drow!
(If the spell has just been mentioned "This" is correct, otherwise use "The")
thanks for the feedback! 🙂
I can't pronounce "thrilling" correctly even after trying multiple times
Anyway feedback?
I can't pronounce it like fluent or native people would do.

Okay I thought I was pronouncing it wrong and thx for the answer
Slag i believe is a insult word
More you can just look at dictionary
now that you said it is a insult word a could find the meaning of it
Thank you
Hi friends, pls help me with meaning of the phrase “ the philosophical makeup of the court” . Thx much
I think I'll need a bit more context, like where you saw this phrase and what was the original place talking about
Loosely, I think it refers to the way a court is designed and how that might have some philosophical meaning/effect on the attenders
Hi Byunn, the full context is “i'm pleased to welcome justice jackson to the court and to our common calling that historic moment in terry moran we were on the air earlier today when it happened terry while justice jackson brings a new perspective life experience and background the philosophical makeup of the court remains the same it does wait it's still a six to three conservative super majority “
Ah I see now. So the phrase means something like 'the purpose and the reason why a (law) court exists'
Makeup here means 'what forms something; what constitutes something'. Basically the things that create a bigger thing
This Justice Jackson person can tell you about his various different experiences with a law court, but in the end, the law court remains the same - to handle cases and deliver justice
Something like that
I have very important exam tomorrow
Can anyone explain these
51
Sorry for the quality 🤧
I read the definitions and example sentences about it but still I don't understand what "deed" means, can anyone help me please??
A menace (usually a person or animal) has earned the title by their past deeds.
In this sentence for example
Deed = action here
Past deeds = past actions
Past perfect (had + Ved/V3) is used when you want to talk about something that happened BEFORE something else IN THE PAST
In this sentence, this person has to work first to feel tired later
Since the sentence is using past tense (was exhausted), and you want to talk about the action that happened even before that, you used past perfect (had worked)
'company' here is an uncountable noun, meaning 'the presence of one/many other people), so you don't fill the blank space with anything
So the answer is D
Thank you so much but why don't they use actions instead of deed then?
Is there a difference
Where can I find this grammar past perfect and so on? I just randomly put had or have in past tense.
I'm sure 'deed' has a certain amount of motivation/meaning behind it' while 'action' just means exactly what it is - a normal action
In your case, 'deed' has a negative meaning here, which then leads to the person earning the (also negative) title 'menace'
I'm pretty sure you can find it on most English learning websites. Give me a moment
Try searching 'past perfect' in this server. You'll find similar questions and answers
was inspired by credit scoring practices elsewhere in the world, such as FICO in the United States and Schufa in Germany
Why is there not a "the" preceding "Germany"? I feel it's unfair for Germany.
Is it ok to omit the "the" before “United States”?
Also I'm confused about this verb "to inflict" . Could you help me please
Thx
Country name, but you already knew that
You need 'the' before 'United States' because it's not a country name. It's another way to call America, but America is the official name (I think so at least)
With 'United States', you're referring to the states that make up America, so you'll need 'the' here
'Inflict' means 'to make something happen to someone/something; to make something happen'
So, for example, 'inflict pain' = 'to make pain happen' = 'to hurt'
It's mostly used to negative words that are related to danger, damage, pain, sickness,...
#JusticeForGermany
Why not had been working
And can you the explain the second sentence please
Thank you for you time ❤️
Btw thank you for your precious time
Oh I made a mistake. Both are grammatically correct but yeah, you should use 'had been working' here to fit with the 'all day long' after the blank space
You use 'had been working' to emphasize how long/continuous the action is (like with every other continuous tenses)
The verb you already have in the sentence is "couldn't", which is the past form of "can"
So the first thing you will do is ignore all the present/future tense answers
Now you only have A and D left. Like I said in my previous answer, past perfect (had had) is only used when you want to talk about one action happening before another action in the past
In this sentence, the reason he couldn't join the meeting is because right at that moment he couldn't connect to the internet. Both actions are happening at the same time, so you use the normal past tense
So 'was having'
You are the best man ❤️
Hi guys I have a question about the word "Not Service-oriented" I saw it on the movie that the waiter walked to the table and not smiling to the customers. So I just want to know the exact meaning of this word thanks in advanced 🙂
it means the restaurant is not focused on service, like smiling to the customers, refilling the water, maybe even bring the food to the table. The waitress didn't smile because it wasn't part of her job
it is
thanks a lot !
I just want to add one point here which is, " ........ "
My question is; in the above sentence , should I add " which is " or should I directly state my point ?
what beat go off means
both are equally correct, but "which is" makes it sound more formal. You might want to use it in an essay, but if you're only speaking with friends then without "which is" is perfectly fine
music good
Oh okay got it, I was writing a formal blog post so I had this doubt. Thanks for clearing it ❤️👍
what is the author trying to say
from what I can tell, it's a description of the physical environment
"Society"
"If I'm idle which i rarely am but..."or "If I'm idle i rarely am but..."
first
The weather is awful. __________.
A. It's raining all day
B. It has been raining
C. A and B
What is the correct answer?
Has been raining
all day can't go with present continuous, right? so it can't be A or C

I don't think so
16:33
alr
thanks
I was just lost at that moment when I wrote it XD
I guess it seemed pretty stupid XD
and if its 5:27 would you say 27 after 5 or what?
Well no
27 past 5
If it's 5:15, you'll use quarter
Quarter past five
For 5:30
Half past five
Here
This can help
Yes
okay that's good

otherwise I'd have done it wrong for nearly a year now XD
Xd
tysm
spoke.
hi hi. is it right if i say "the meeting got/was called off"? 🤔
It should be 'spoke' (simple past) or 'speaks' (simple present)
'Spoken' is a past participle, which is used in passive sentences or perfect tenses
It is right
correct
Sure ask
And this
But if i use these verbs (verbs that need to be followed by a gerund) and add nouns or pronouns after the verbs... should i use infinitives? @near fable
Like
She recommends me to buy this book or she recommends me buying this book
I recommend him to practice gerunds and infinitives or I recommend him practicing gerunds and infinitives
@flat rune
"She recommends that I buy this book."
"I recommended practicing gerunds to him."
what does it mean when a movie rated R
Have you tried googling it? This isn't a question about English
hey there
i had a question
Naguib Mahfouz is a pioneer in ..... Arabic literature.
in the space here it should be no article or the?
No article, because literature (or any other subject, field of expertise, knowledge,...) isn't countable or needs to be defined with 'the'
ure 1000% sure?
I'm 1001% sure
i trust you but allow me to double check haha
@outer swift
Smart man. Respect++++
I think so
I've read something about this before
@supple holly @flat rune how do you pronounce “ion(i don’t)”
You do not.
Ohhh
Most times, articles are unnecessary.
But i heard someone say it
In this case, "Arabic language" does not need one because there is no group of Arabic tongues. It is Arabic.
You will hear natives slur speech often.
It does not need replication.
I dunno if it’s “i-yon”
You're likely hearing "Iunno", which is "I don't know".
Ohhh
Usually, though, one replies non-verbally or by humming "mMm."
I heard someone said “ion have money”
It's a bizarre slur of "I don't".
It isn't said for correctness, but for ease.
"y'aint doin' othin'" is of the same calibre.
It isn't grammatical nor proper but it is slurred for ease of expression and speed.
It means that the movie has sex in it.
@flat rune is it have or had
Why’d you have/had to become…
"Why did you have"
Wait wait it’s would btw
Why would you have or had to become
"Why would you have"
Thankyouu again
I have question
So it's about the "s" in thre end of the words
For example, do we say "She Has girls friends"
Or "she has girl friends"
Or "she has girls friend"
guys please tell the phrase < Money Makers > what means
"The only time he has stiff muscles is after he’s been down the gym for hours." What does "he's been down the gym for hours" mean in this sentence?
"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."
The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.
Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.```
bro where is the joke. teacher said if you understand the joke, you understand commas
Good day
It's pretty obvious ig
People who make good money
Shoots and leave ig
Could you please distinguish between frigid and impassive?
Also between verify and confirm
there the same ex. theres a meme about a man saying "Im not asking to confirm, Im asking to verify" the meme: Im not dead, just not alive
Because verify and confirm is the same thing
they work the same way
If "girl friend" refers to a female friend, then it is just girl friends. If the girl has a friend, then it is "the girl's friend", or "a girl's friend".
They are the ones who make money. They're the breadwinners. The ones in the family who pay the bills.
It probably means "down at the gym".
they're very similar but there are still cases where you use one over the other, mostly due to tradition
like you'd always say "verify" when talking about file integrity
It makes no sense if you keep the commas as they are.
I.e.: "Eats, shoots, and leaves."
It reads as "The panda eats, the panda shoots people, and the panda leaves."
Verify asks if something is correct.
Confirm just means to say something is one way or the other.
You verify claims, you do not confirm them.
you could still say "confirm a claim" and it would be perfectly understandable, it's just not used that way because traditionally we use verify
i don't think it's a meaning difference, just usage difference
Hello
Its mostly for apps and applying
Hey there
@flat rune difference between who and whom
One could, but it sounds atrocious.
If you use it to reference the validity of a statement, then one would simply be wrong.
Confirmation means that something happened. Verify means that something is right.
Confirming anything is akin to saying "yes, this was said", verifying relates to whether or not the assertion holds weight.
It is like saying "I was beaten" when one was tapped on the head.
Who is a pronoun that serves as the subject in a sentence.
Whom is a pronoun that serves as the object of the sentence.
Servers as an object?
What do you mean?
Can u give an example
"Who are you?"
"Whom do you like?"
Never heard it before that who is pronoun
@flat rune why is it whom and not who
Whom i used to adore
Btw thank you all for discussing my question and trying to find the best answer together, it shows your care towards our questions as learners. I'm literally grateful
They both mean the same thing, however frigid can be also used to describe an object or place (frigid can also mean very cold temperatures, especially)
@minor galleon is this correct
“I just realized how cute it is when someone gives you a nickname”
Why sentence "Running is hard to me " is incorrect?
It should be for instead of to
I have a question related to punctuation. Can someone look at the following sentence and let me know if all my commas are placed correctly? Should I place a comma before "guardian of the Thundering Plains" or should I use an em dash instead?
Sentence: The strongest boss in the game is not the Red Dragon, but the Storm Dragon, guardian of the Thundering Plains!
Both comma and dash would work fine
And I think it should be "the guardian" instead of just "guardian"
thanks for your feedback!
I'm trying to improve my English by free voluntary reading but get stuck in book selection. Any book recommendation for an 10000+ vocab English learner ?
Visual Novel like ( Wonderful everyday, the song of saya)
choosing the book that you love is more important than finding a 10000+ vocab book
Song of Saya
Don't recommend such things
🦣
Try Brian Sanderson's books. The Mistborne series could be a good start
Or the entire LotR series. Tolkien had a beautiful way with words
Thx! I'll get one
guys can you advise me a any book for intermediate level?
See above
hello. when something is dismantled and i want to gather the pieces, should i use "to assemble" or to "set up" (saw it being used with tents)?
How to improve active vocabulary?
Someone knows unexpectedly synonyms suddenly?
@supple holly @flat rune help now I’m having trouble pronouncing words how to you pronounce “fact” is it “fakt” or “fak” first one kinda off when u pronounce it ut with the t
Frigid means cold. You use this for temperatures, but never people. Ordinarily, it serves as a description of one's heart or conceptual existence, but not a literal part of his person.
Impassive means unfeeling, like emotionless. You use this to refer to people.
"Fakt."
To be more accurate, "frigid" relies on the literal definition of "cold", as in the temperature, to provide meaning. Impassive, however, relies on the metaphorical definition of "cold".
It always stop at the letter t when u pronounce it like “the fact. That”
It’s like “.”
Normally it is something that I call a "rolling T". The "t" in "fact" is not as emphasised as the next "t" in "That".
Hi everybody
can someone give me some advice to improve my listening level? I understand some words but not all
Voice channels
hey
How would you say in a polite way "Im interested and will be following the subject"?
I don’t get it sorry english isn’t really my first language
What’s emphasized?
There is not as much power when pronouncing the first "t".
So the way should i pronounce it is like “the fakt that you said…”
Like that
What is a jigsaw reading strategy? And how can one apply it in a classroom?
it depends on the accent you're learning
typically natives abruptly cut off stop consonants at the end of words, but it never happens in British RP
Im learning English language
...
You'll get slapped
No, put off means to extinguish
Take off is to remove clothes
Oh, sorry, not extinguish, that would be put out
Put off is to postpone
Very true 😭
Can you give us an example of using " put off " in a sentence?
She was put off because the man had a dangerous look on his face.
Jack was not put off.
There's this webiste called https://ludwig.guru/s/put+off that if you enter a word, it gives you example sentences from news articles. Some of the sentences are too complicated and not important, so don't worry about them.
Thanks for the resource and help 🙏
One more question, which one is correct - " Where is it ? " or " Where it is ? "
Where is it?
