#

🤨 Well, dang.

#

See?

#

I barely know.

#

Yet I'm supposedly smart. Lol

dense oasis
#

u can get around in the UK and not die so i guess smart enough

flat rune
#

Lol

#

It's the UK, not the Amazonian jungle.

#

I suppose some roads can be a bit dangerous.

dense oasis
#

you gotta pray to the god the shots work cuz if they dont, or its too late, then you end up dropping dead sooner or later lol

flat rune
#

That's scary. Didn't realise that.

#

We're (usually) taught as a young age to stay the hell away from wild or feral animals.

dense oasis
#

i always am scared of stray dogs because of this

flat rune
#

I have no desire to go near an unknown animal, if it can bite me or I get any sense it's dodgy in some way.

flat rune
#

Remember: if it bites you, bite it back. It can't eat you if you eat it first!

dense oasis
#

yeah and its worse if they got rabies cuz they start to be aggressive for no real reason, or very oversensitive, and can attempt to attack even tho human didnt make any suspicious moves

#

woah, scam

dense oasis
#

hopefully the viruses will be fried too

flat rune
#

Lol Damn, I literally just reported it. That's quick.

dense oasis
#

its either like they get a special notification/channel for them or theyve got some bot which judges by the keywords

#

if i typed the same and you reported me, maybe i would be banned very quickly too, cuz maybe there is some mechanism quicker than humans

#

Not gonna try

flat rune
#

Lol

#

Yeah, maybe. That could be problematic.

#

Not my most diplomatic of messages.

dense oasis
#

lol i swear i was sure it got deleted by some lurking mod

flat rune
#

Lol No, just me.

#

...maybe I'm a mod?! 😮

dense oasis
#

youre the mod? oh damn secret powers

#

Du hast der Macht

flat rune
#

With great powers...

dense oasis
#

Or something

flat rune
#

I think it's die Macht, but aside from that, perfect.

dense oasis
#

i know it from a song lmao

flat rune
#

...yes, it is. Just checked.

#

Awesome.

#

I'm quite aware that we're chatting up a storm in the wrong channel, but the other places seem to be swamped with toxic nonsense or heavy debates. I really think there should be more general channels. At least 1 more.

#

There's another server I visit that has 2 general channels, and it works perfectly.

flat rune
#

Lol

#

Yes. Little princess, you have the power, you are the Queen of the night. You are young and wonderfully beautiful, and every arse wants to go with you.

#

Doesn't all translate too well, but there you go.

dense oasis
#

yesss i know that, its funny cuz i would never say that myself

flat rune
#

Oh, OK.

dense oasis
#

but i comprehend this in this particulat context

#

*r

#

cuz i remember myself checking it multiple times

flat rune
#

The Arsch bit is weird as heck.

#

But I suppose we have similar idioms in English. I assume it's an idiom.

dense oasis
flat rune
#

There. Better safe than sorry.

flat rune
dense oasis
#

yeah, and depending on the time of the day, all you get in "general" is israel vs palestine debates, or people insulting each other

#

or people spamming hi

#

pretty classic crowd

#

I recall seeing something fancier than "crowd", it was like... rabble?

flat rune
#

Yeah, rabble might work.

#

Rabblerousers come to mind.

dense oasis
#

in a british book, it was a description of a crowd, and the crowd was probably referred to as a rabble, the people were said to "teem as ants"

flat rune
#

Not sure if that's one word. Probably not. German compound words are messing with my English.

#

Oh yeah, that sounds familiar.

#

I've heard that teeming with ants idiom before, mostly when I was younger.

#

Or maybe I'm just thinking of „teeming“ in general.

dense oasis
#

or another weird one, thats probably the most bizzare, i recall there was a word like pullulation, it was used to describe how dense they are, like there were many in a narrow place

#

Or maybe more like... there is a looot of them, and they move, so maybe thats what pullulation truly is

flat rune
#

Oh wow.

The act of germinating or budding.

#

Lovely word.

dense oasis
#

germinating, ive no idea what this is, gonna check

flat rune
#

So, when everyone gets together in General, they're pullumating, I guess. Hah

#

To spread germs, I believe.

#

Or maybe to spread as if a germ; in the nature of a germ.

dense oasis
#

pullumating?

flat rune
#

No, germinating.

dense oasis
#

am sure ive seen pullulation

#

ah

flat rune
#

The quote block above is for pullumation.

dense oasis
#

ahhhh

#

okay i see

flat rune
#

One of the definitions I found online.

#

I actually have a German dictionary enabled on the browser. The English one is uninstalled. EVERYTHING is apparently a big red ERROR. Lol

#

I think I underestimated how much English I'd be typing.

#

Please learn German. 😛

#

I'm kidding, don't, it's horrific.

dense oasis
flat rune
#

Bloom.

#

Blossom.

dense oasis
#

ahhhh, yeah

#

i knew it but i couldnt recall

flat rune
#

Flowers bloom, they blossom into lovely pretty flowers.

dense oasis
#

yes, they bloom, amazing

flat rune
#

I assume budding is the early stage, when they grow buds.

dense oasis
#

they can also proliferate

flat rune
#

Many things can proliferate.

#

Language proliferates.

#

Diseases.

#

Culture.

dense oasis
#

so it develops and grows bigger, more complex, generally spreads

flat rune
#

I guess so.

dense oasis
#

Probably just spreads

flat rune
#

Spreading is what I think of with that word.

dense oasis
#

i know prolific too

#

like productive

flat rune
#

That's another good one.

dense oasis
#

i suppose

flat rune
#

I speak English prolifically. I can't remember how to spell it. I think that's right.

#

Not 100% sure what it means, other than by context.

#

To a much greater extent.

#

To do something a lot.

#

That's all I have.

dense oasis
#

Maybe something like "The author published many new books that year, he was truly prolific"

flat rune
#

Maybe.

#

It's not a word I hear too often. If I do, it's usually in the context of doing something a lot, or spreading prolifically.

#

Producing or characterized by abundant works or results: synonym: fertile.

#

OK, that's good, I more or less had it right. Lol

dense oasis
#

i kinda got it right a bit

flat rune
#

Yep.

dense oasis
#

british authors trained me

#

in reality am just AI

flat rune
#

Not a chance.

#

You're C1, at least.

#

Unless you're hiding your true skill. Lol

dense oasis
#

yeah, its way less amazing when i speak aloud lol, i think longer and i stress, unnecessarily

flat rune
#

Oooh.

#

My spoken German is crap. I also take much longer, and my pronunciation can be a bit rough sometimes. The pronunciation isn't too bad, but the ability to form sentences „live“ is really difficult.

Grammar Question. Which one of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

**A) "See? I told you I'd be fine."

B) "See? I told you I'll be fine."**

This was spoken by a man who has just returned from the battlefield. Before leaving, he had told his wife he would survive the war. So upon his return, he reminded his wife of what he had said previously.

bright pulsar
# hot elm Hi everyone, can someone explain the difference between "in court" and "at the c...

"in" is often used to suggest active participation at a particular location. e.g. "in class" signifies that they're in a lesson in a classroom. likewise, "in court" signifies participation in an ongoing court proceeding or hearing. the use of the propositional is often contextual as a result. "at" is usually reserved for physical presence. "at the court" doesn't imply there's an active session, but that someone is physically at a court.

#

"in" can often be both, but "at" isn't used to suggest active participation as often.

# copper spade For what uses"used to"?

'used to' refers to a thing that you did in the past but no longer do now. Example 'I used to go to school' (but don't now). This is only used to refer to a past action.

If you combine it with the verb 'to be' it means to be accustomed to. Example 'I am used to (accustomed to) standing all day at work'. This usage can be used in the past present and future.

# flat rune Qual é a diferença entre “Hello” e “Hey”?

Both mean the same. They are just used more often in different locations of the world, or by people of different cultures or ages. 'hello' is the most basic form of the greeting and is used everywhere. 'hey' is considered slightly more casual compared to hello, and it's used because it doesn't sound like you've just learned English. But that is just a nuance to help you gauge the words. Basically both are fine.

For the various meanings of court... Law court, tennis court, at the court means you are there but not a participant in the events of the court, and in the court usually means you are a participant of the court,... a player or criminal or judge or umpire.

But there are people who will use them interchangeably also, so it's not a set rule. A judge will say anyone sitting listening is also 'in' the court for example, but the news journalists waiting outside are 'at' the court.

Hi! Does anybody know a website or PDF book for the subject **participle ** and ** **"ing" clauses" / "ed" clauses / having been / having know / knowing that /

languid citrus
#

The past participle of a regular verb usually ends in -ed, just like the simple past tense. But the past participles of
irregular verbs don’t follow this rule. When forming a past participle, it will usually end ‘-ed’. But this depends on whether the verb is regular or irregular. The difference here is:
Regular past participles are all formed by adding ‘-ed’, ‘-ied’, or ‘-d’ and match the simple past tense form of the verb (e.g. the simple past tense and past participle forms of ‘kick’ are both ‘kicked’).
Irregular past participles do not follow a regular pattern and have a range of word endings, not just ‘-ed’. And while some irregular verbs use the same form for the simple past tense and past participle (e.g. bend/bent/bent), others use different forms (e.g. drive/drove/driven).

Frist, the sentence is incorrect, it would use the present perfect

I'm said I have been said

I've been said to = the subject is you and the event happened without any actions from you

They've been said to = the subject is still simple cause it only use "they" and to become complex it should use a modifier, to rewrite as complex it should be like:

A lot of people have said to...
To indicate not group of people but some of what you can consider "people"

A lot is to indicate a quantity of things
(I have a lot of homework to do)

Very is a word that add intensity to another adjective, I've saw that "really" is more common in the UK but they have the same meaning
(I have becomed very strong)

Much is used like "a lot" to count things although I've noticed they mostly use with negative phrases
(There isn't much to do)
To use much in the first phrase I showed you with "a lot" you have to add "so" but here you sound more annoyed

Writer and author are sometimes the same. Meaning a person who writes something: book, articles and so on. Writer can also mean a job. Author is more general. Clauses contain a subject (which is the actor) and a verb (which is the action the subject performs). Sentences are made up of independent and dependent clauses that describe a subject, where they are, the mood, and the action they are taking.

obtuse sequoia
# modest zenith hi, I've got a question about articles lately I've been noticing that on website...

Native speakers take a lot of context into account when it comes to speaking. It's why we have abbreviations and contractions. Our brain tends to fill in the article naturally even if it's not there.

In the case of "change language", it's probably used for efficiency. Since native speakers assume that there's an article there, even though there's not, it makes it more convenient to not include it.

In the case of natives not using articles when they should be taken into account, that could probably be narrowed down to specific ways of speaking. If one is speaking a little too quickly, they may accidentally skip over an article in order to not sacrifice speed.

I hope i interpreted your question correctly. if you have any further comments or questions, let me know

# modest zenith hi, I've got a question about articles lately I've been noticing that on website...

Notwithstanding Robbie's answer,

What you are looking at with computer programs, are buttons with labels. The labels are adjectives that describe the button. This is the critical point. The active are used to list the meaning of describe the object.
The use article would be: "the change language button.". As it is known that the object is a button, this is left off of the label. It does not need to say button, as it is a button. Similarly it requires no article, as the label is just a description.

This is similar to when you wear a name tag at a meeting. The tag does not say 'the Iraqi name tag'. It would just have "iraqi" written on it.

If you go to s hotels and ask for the bridal suite, the for will have written in it "Bridal Suite" as it is a description of the room. It will not say "the Bridal Suite door"

Also with computer buttons, what you are looking at can be thought of as options to answer an assumed question which is what would you like to change? (Name, address, age, language). When spoken it is only necessary to say the answer without the article, so for example you would respond 'address' or to the question "what color would you like: red, blue or yellow". You would respond 'yellow' without an article.

I hope this has made some sense..

# modest zenith hi, I've got a question about articles lately I've been noticing that on website...

Because natives do not follow Grammar rules as we don't follow them in our mother tongues.
Non-native speakers are learning that language, so they must follow the rules. But natives, on the other hand, they have learned it since they were born, so they don't really need and care about the rules in informal/spoken English.
However, when they want to speak formally, they do follow the rules.
A wrong belief which is very trended nowadays, is that learners should mimic natives. That's wrong! Because you don't know the correct form but they do.
But, yes! After we learn the rules, we can mimic natives and speak like them in informal/spoken English.
First, learn the rules.

from how i understand it "I got used to" implies that you will elaborate on how you got used to the thing
i.e. "I got used to taking care of a dog by living with my aunt". I think it would sound a little weird if someone just said "I got used to taking care of a dog." without elaborating.
On the other hand, "I am used to" doesnt carry this connotation so you could just say: "I am used to taking care of a dog." without elaborating.

However also remember that they may not want to correct you, as it is time consuming to resend everything back to you. Indeed, reading improves your understanding of grammar structures and expands your vocabulary. For that, you need to read a lot. But you will not be able to read a lot of boring texts. Look for texts that may be interesting for you, even if they are not adapted for learners. Do not worry if you do not understand something. Try to guess and keep reading.

Still better if you find a book (a long novel 200 to 400 pages), which may be interesting for you - a love story, a spy story, a cops-and-gangsters story, a science fiction story, etc. It is easier to read one long story than many short stories. If you start reading and see that this story is not interesting, drop it and start another story. An interesting (for you) story will keep you involved in reading, and when you make breaks, it is easier to return to a long story than a short one.

The latter. Vibing is a slang, so in the event of requiring its meaning in an academic setting one would not be able to use it.

lunar token
#

The thing about it is that you likely won't write any academic articles where you have to talk about this action

#

unless you go into some sort of social science, in which case you can probably use one of what iotter said to get across that idea of "two people need to like each other"

#

If you're narrating a story with two people in it and you need to say they were sitting together and getting along well, iotter's words sound pretty good

#

I was just wondering about a specific use case because the word "vibe" tends to get used for a lot of stuff (not just getting along with a person)

main imp
#

What if you want to replace the word vibe with a different one in these sentences: "You did not pass the vibe check" , "I do not feel a good vibe here", "This song is a vibe"?

lunar token
#

again, because of the way academic writing works, you likely won't even approach this kind of situation the same way you would when speaking casually

main imp
#

The truth is I just want to avoid using slangs when speaking, even if it gets me weird looks.

lunar token

theeere we go lol

#

some good, neutral ways of rephrasing those three sentences if you don't like "vibe" are things like "You didn't seem right to me", "I don't trust this at all", "This song is great/super catchy"

#

But there's no need to avoid using slang entirely (whatever you might think of as slang) because not every word has the same connotation; even "catchy" might fall under the umbrella of slang because it's informal, but it's established enough that people from all over the place use it and don't see anything wrong

main imp
#

Though for catchy one could use "Instantly captivating" in its place.

main imp

I believe word choices can affect how an individual is perceived; I do not agree with the mindset held by a great number of people from my generation, so I do not want to be lumped in with them by folks due to speaking in the same way they do.

lunar token
#

that's at the heart of a lot of sociolinguistic differences, the way you speak mirrors the way you see yourself or want to be seen by others

#

Even with that though, there are different types of norms depending on what situation you're in, and that's what I meant by registers

#

people from one generation aren't monolithic in how they speak all the time, and the way you're thinking about is probably a reflection of a situation that they're very comfortable in but you aren't, which is fine

#

just wanted to make sure you realize there's probably a lot of vocabulary you still share with them that doesn't feel so uncomfortable, like the quotes I made up above that still aren't "shakespearean" language lol

Regressing to Shakespearean times is an exaggeration, but incorporating at least some formal words and sentence structures into my speech is really what I want.

I get that you are not interested in using slang, but if you use such erudite and in some cases archaic words it may not lead just to someone not understanding you but to them thinking you are trying to come off as more intelligent (or better) than they are. I love big fancy words, but most people do not appreciate when they are used in informal conversation. Add onto that the possibility of an accent and people will just throw up their hands and walk away from you rather than trying to figure out what you are saying. Please remember the primary purpose of language is communication.

@amber junco @runic trench these are the explanations from other English group. Once again thanks for cleaning up my mind

Explanation from A : The "what I really am" part is not a part of the conditional. Grammatically, it is an object clause of the conditional sentence "If I knew...(What?). From the classical grammar standpoint, the rule of sequence of tenses applies here, which requires "was" (with the exception explained by Stanislaw). I don't think you should be splitting hairs though as no-one seems to be caring this about sequence of tenses.

Explanation from B: if you keep 'am', you refer to a general state that is still true now. If you go with 'was', you refer to the past (something that is not true now). In this case 'am / was' has nothing to do with 'conditionals'.

You will not be able to remember or even understand grammar rules until you have some models in your head, to which you can apply the grammar rules you are trying to learn. So, before you learn grammar, develop a set of models of different kinds of sentences (affirmative, negative, questions).

One of the ways to do this: Choose several texts and audios - at least 50 pages of texts and at least a couple of hours of audios. Prefer audios with transcriptions. Read texts aloud. Listen to the audios and try to repeat. or just listen and read the transcription. Do this for two or three hours every day (no "weekends") with the same texts and audios, for about two months. Do not hurry, work with each text or audio for two or three days, until the text starts popping up in front of your eyes when you shut the book and the audio starts sounding in your head when you switch off your player.

Still better, try to find an audio course for beginners. and do the same with this course.

This will give you a set of model sentences, to which you will be able to apply grammar rules and see how they work.

We can set traps on a path or we can rig a path with traps. We can also use the „up“ preposition with „set“ in this context, such as when we say we're setting something up. I'm not sure your second example is something we'd really say.

I'm setting down some traps on this path.

I've set so many traps up on that road.

The room is rigged with traps.

The entire path is rigged with traps.

Broadly speaking, animals also have bones.

The use of the „broadly“ adverb here indicates that the following clause (the statement) is generally true.

The paint was midnight black and the canvas clear. I broadly painted several strokes until an image formed before me.

I'm no painter, but in this case, I don't think we'd usually use „broadly“ as an averb, but would say for example that we painted „broad strokes“.

I think „broadly“ is primarily used when speaking about something generally, such as the first example. It's generally true that animals have bones, but some don't.

As an addition to what has been said above, I can give you a little quote, might end up being a bit difficult for you, but i think it may give you a nice example:

"In New England the only counterpart to the mysterious emptying of Jerusalem’s Lot, or ’salem’s Lot as the natives often refer to it, seems to be a small town in Vermont called Momson. During the summer of 1923, Momson apparently just dried up and blew away, and all 312 residents went with it. The houses and few small business buildings in the town’s center still stand, but since that summer fifty-two years ago, they have been uninhabited."

The protocol aims at creating a cozy and admirable workspace on a computer by offering a path to both optimal general organization and management.
The idea is to demonstrate that a good work environment usually consists in significantly better results.
DOCUMENT GOALS
The document contains the full description, step by step, of the protocol realized by Drip.
The document functions as a guide and it can be used by anyone.
PRECONDITION
Before starting the protocol’s procedures, it is necessary to verify the following pre-requirements:
This protocol only works for computers that have Windows 10 or 11 as their operative system, so it is necessary for the computer to follow this requirement.
Whoever decides to apply the protocol to a computer, it is important for them to be the owner of the computer they are operating on, in order to avoid uncomfortable situations and guarantee more effective results.
A stable internet connection is necessary.
The desktop’s trash bin must be empty, so it is necessary to empty it in order to avoid filling it or slowing down the erasing process.
If all of these fields are respected, you may start with the protocol.
PROTOCOL STEPS
DIRECTORIES CLEANSING
The first step consists in going through every directory of every available hard drive to get rid of outdated, useless and forgotten files you might not want to keep anymore and to move the ones you care about where you want to conserve them.

Before you start, create a folder you can easily access at all times so you can copy the files you want to keep in there the moment you find them, you’re gonna need this folder the time you want to relocate every single file you found.
Creating the folder on your desktop surely makes it very easy to access and keep track of, but it unfortunately exposes it to higher risks of accidentally erasing it, so it is recommended to create the folder in any other directory and then create a desktop shortcut in order to avoid any risk
