It's simply same as 'bailing out of something' imo
That's close to what I thought. Thanks man, so usefully succinct!
It can also be said differently: your way out of jail ticket but that means something slightly different
Thanks again.
And may I ask what that means?
I like to sniff body
Never heard of that expression before
Seems like it's local
That seems to be an inadequate response.
Regardless, u have a nice day mate.
Seeking attention
Does that bother #📚|english-questions on discord?
I'm just curious. Why are bringing that up here in this server?
Just a warning
Because the initial question was directed towards me?
This is not the USA. People from around the globe come here!
Was your question not dumb?
LGBTQ idolatry? Lmfao
Well, then talk to the teachers/authorities
This is not the place for that
Guys, what is the meaning of arcs of time?
That's gay
Could you please tell us the context?
to my knowledge, this isnt a thing
Was my sentence grammatically incorrect?
Chapter 4,
“The Long View,” lays out strategies to
help you plan for longer arcs of time, such as building a career or a family.
in this example, arcs = periods
He's obviously trying to be provocative
This is an English-learning server. Such comments are rude!
So Just ignore him ^-^
I mean, could u elaborate more, please?
Unsolicited criticism is not required
with respect, thats not what this channel is for. its for answering English questions.

He's days are numbered
Let him enjoy his last moments
He'll find a different server to bother
Maybe He's searching 1 rn
prolly. while listening to his echo
a nobody trying to be a somebody
Did you apply to be mod?
"Didn't say that"
Everyone's
Highly appreciated guys. Thanks Mr.stickler.
Mission accomplished
just report that message and he will be gone
You might also think of it as phases of life
hi guys i just wanna ask that what does "soldier of fortune" mean? it means mercenary or lucky soldier?
haha, its someone in the military that goes wherever the action is, basically, for their own pleasure
there are soldiers from the US and other countries that are fighting in Ukraine, not officially, but independently
My friend, who is a doctor, is very busy.
The house, which is on the hill, is for sale.
The book, which I read last week, was very good.
How are these sentences considered as nondefining clause I do know when a relative clause has a comma it's considered as nondefining clause but I just can't understand why they are not defining clauses.
How to use 12 tense
because they give you extra information, they don't just state a subject who does/is something/someone
well technically there's 16 of them but depends if one's classifying past versions of Future tenses as separate grammar tenses, or just the same as future tenses with "will", because future simple, future continuous, future perfect, and future perfect continuous can be made into "would" instead of "will"
nondefining because the part inside the commas is unnecessary to the meaning of the sentence. if you removed the info in between the commas, it is still complete.
"I thought I would have finished it by yesterday" vs "I think I will have finished it by tomorrow", like we can say these two are both future perfect, but the first one uses would, soo some people would actually say its not future perfect anymore
okay but if I said the house is for sale without the relative clause the listener wouldn't know which house I'm talking about
@cerulean tusk what does captivating mean ?
is "would prefer" polite?
its an extreme adjective meaning extremely interesting
very! 👌
sounds like more than interesting to me tbh...
I don't like ted
and now you're native
Just doesn't click for me
apparently thats the reason you're native
Wait is that how you earned your nativity
Ow~
you can be double native if you watch jordan peterson-like sh## all days
I think my english has gotten loose lately due to me not finding the right people to have a civil conversation with
Unfortunately
Lol

nah output has nothing to do with it, i almost never speak out loud, and still am progressing, because i get a lot of active input
then you just walk around sounding like you read the Thesaurus every day at breakfast
Black dear boy, speaking is a skill
It doesn't matter if ur C1 C2 C3 native or beyond
It's a skill
That can't be obtained with just knowledge
then it's a skill i dont posess lol
That's what im talking about
My social skills has decreased
Due to the lack of finding
*have
Interesting ppl to chat with
yea the VC is hit and miss
99% a miss
be a little more patient
why
maybe you didnt try a sufficient amount of times
Have ?
yeah, cuz plural
actually... its the pronoun, not the plurality
hm? i meant "skills" is a plural noun
he, she, it = has
yeah but skills is not singular
yea, fair enough. you are right about that
i know i am
😭
Why are u crying lol
Tearful
@mortal citrus help me
okay
ive had time to think about this. we still always want to primarily think about the pronoun when using has/have because thats always true.
if i have a sentence with no plural use, but i use she, i always use has.
"she has no feeling in her left leg"
So is it has or have
i have no feeling in my left leg
Yws
Oh ok
tricky because my is not the subject. my social skills is the subject and because its plural, have.
I understand now
^^
Yes
Yay
Definitely a tricky sentence
are u talking about the definition in general excluding the grammar one?
like subpar, below par
its secondary
Yes
almost inferior
if you are a manager, you have subordinates that report to you
exactly

Yeah
We shall disband for now,but we have to join another time
sounds good
What does it mean to be amped up on smth??
"I like it cooked"
"I prefer it fried"
Can someone explain to me what rule is this? Why dont we need to be verb to explain the object?
You can play Chess on any devices, comouter or phones,
So Chess is very….. mobile? 🤔
"Like" and "prefer" here are complex verbs.
The general formula is "verb + object + noun/adjective"
Yes. "Mobile" means it can move or be moved around easily, so yes chess is mobile
HAIR is both countable and uncountable?
His hair is messy
There’re hairs all over the floor
If you’re talking about hair in general than it is uncountable (unquantifiable). If you’re talking about strands of hair then it is countable (quantifiable).
So it can be both.
i have a high fever for three days now, sometimes it drops, sometimes it rises back again
plus i was sleeping
like now am 36.0 celsius, the normal is considered to be 36.6, last night i had 38.2, its very weird
does this sound 'natural'?
I want to travel all around the wolrd.
I want to go to PLACES all around the world.
how would you say it? 🤔
I’d rephrase the second one “I want to go to all places around the world”
Kiu 🫡
I'd just use the first phrase
More concise and still convey the same meaning
kim 🧀 🫡
Yum
Kiu's response is good and grammatically right, but it sounds even more natural to say "I want to go to all THE places around the world"
i don't know how my stomach would react to that kind of taste -sweet+spicy
Yeah it sounds funny without the “the” but I’m a person who’s picky about repetition LMAO, good explanation though
perfecto my friend 🫡
do you play chess by any chance?
@mint seal
I used to. I’m too busy to play chess now
Also I’m not very good at it
I have but I've never gotten in depth with it.
Guys I got a problem. The bus leaves the school. The buses leave the school. In the second one should I use leaves or not and tell me ?
'The bus leaves the school' is singular, 'The buses leave the school' is for two or more.
ummm no. to be amped up on something is to have an excess of something, usually by consuming, like sugar or caffeine
happy to help!
In second one use leave
If you know the exact number say 'The 3 buses left the school' @uneven wave
Your answer is a few messages above
Or whatever number it WOULD be in your case
thanks, i forgot to tag the original person
for additional help, you can be amped to see a movie... which would indicate an excess of excitement or anticipation.
Fr
on any device, computer or phone*
I wouldn't call it 'mobile'
it's not physically moving unless you're talking of a chessboard
Neither is a mobile phone. But "mobile" means it can move or be moved, so I think it makes sense here
wdym?
mobile phone is called so because it can be carried anywhere easily
Isn't chess (as in the game) the same then
A mobile is a mobile phone
not really
Huh
I'd think of it as umm something in line with versatile
chess?
as in how the game can be played both physically and virtually
kinda of a stretch to call it versatile
that's why I said something similar
ofc it's not exactly versatile
a mobile phone is, it can be used for text, email, calling, internet, etc...
here's the question
in this way, yes
because i can take my laptop or my phone with me
so they are mobile and everything inside is also
traditionally, no. same here.
a board and pieces are not mogile at all
ugh
mobile
if we are gonna be picky, using the example @flat rune gave, yes.
Wut abt easily Accesible?🤔
@serene plinth @supple holly
yeah
it's easily accessible
I had thought of accessible at first glance but wasn't sure if that was what you were looking for
accessible speaks about how it can be.... accessed. by phone, by tablet, by laptop....
there is another meaning to this, for example "a website is accessible" doesnt mean it is accesible for phones, tablets, and desktops, it means it can adjust to screen readers and people with special needs such as bigger fonts or reversed colors cuz they are color-blind
but
thats a technical perspective to it
normal humans probably dont understand "accessible" this way i guess..
sure, accessible to people with special needs and people without. I feel it still speaks to how something is accessed
Accessible means easy to access
Also just because it's Accessible it doesn't necessarily mean it's Accessible for people with special needs.
it inherently does mean this, i mean as long as it is used as a technical term in the realm of web dev as i mentioned above, i didnt mean to speak about the general meaning of "accessible"
i guess my bad
maybe
Don't worry about black, he likes to somewhat complicate his own sentences for the sake of appearing more intellectual lmao
"Realm of web"
I'm just a dummy with smart words on a good day

That’s not correct
sorry, what is not correct?
what is the deferent between fell and fill ?
fell is past of fall
fill is increasing something, like fill a glass with water or my heart is filled with love
Ohh thank you bro
revenue is income
a term usually used by businesses/governments... lay people just use income for the money they make
Youtube makes ad revenue
yes
right
So it's wrong to say my revenue ?
Unless I'm an employer ?
I need u to shed more light if u may
Also I'm assuming salary is basically a synonym for income
So not worth discussing
is your heart filled with love, or is it only your glass that is filled, but with water?
utube and twitter share their ad revenue with content creators, and they speak of it as such. but those content creators are making income, even if they refer to it the same as the company refers to it
Companies make revenue to give their employees income
Basically
Revenue is for companies
its not necessarily wrong, its just not the most common way its spoken about
Income for people working
bingo
if i have my own business, like a tiny one, then can i say ive got a revenue of XXX last month?
just blank space to be replaced with any number
think about it this way, revenue is just a business term for income
So what you mean by it is that
It's more professional and technical
Than saying income ?
Sorry if im too dumb to understand
My brain is kinda working slow atm
?
Don't want u to repeat yourself, if i don't understand then i don't.
no, like, unimportant, i just got a philosophy moment
Cat is just trying to sound nerdy
i dont have to try tbh...
saul goodman.... not so much "more" professional, its just a business term for the common person term of income
So basically if i said my companies income
Im not terribly wrong
not really
But im not very professional
eh
its not incorrect to say my companies income, its just more correct to say my companies revenue
sorta, yea
i think it's like "my government stole tax payers' money" vs "the government of my country charged the usual amount of tax in order to distribute it among poorer social classes"
like the same difference
as with income vs revenue
means the same, sounds differently
those sound pretty different
yeah, unless you start to see how the world works
then they are pretty much the same
or like "we want to take care of children's safety and secure their online privacy" vs "we want to make sure we can fingerprint everything you can possibly send and take it down as soon as it's against our worldview"
the same lol
i was speaking to the vagueness of "stealing the tax payers' money" vs a detailed 2nd sentence
ah yeah okay
btw, would you be very confused if someone pronounced borough and bureau the same way? i mean i know the difference, but i guess it may happen that someone misses it
It usually depends on the dialect and how well spoken someone is
Many people I know would probably pronounce it the same way.
yes
I think the key is making sure that you provide the context so people can figure it out.
and yes
A lot of Americans are barely fluent in their own language so giving context is more important than knowing big words
I’m sure in other English speaking countries it IS better but there will always be someone who did not pay attention in class
when i watched some of american shows or interviews/vlogs/content of some modern "influencers" then i kinda felt as if they... idk... had problems with speaking english despite being native
I usually have people saying I’m super good, I am fluent but it’s just that all of my peers read at 10 words per minute.
the embarrassing side of America
I do not like being in English class at school for that reason.
I mean just because ur a native it doesn't mean u are gonna be good at speaking
Speaking is a skill
It doesn't matter if u know every word in the book
If u don't speak, u ain't gonna be speaking well.
true but
The respect for decent education in the United States is low
i kinda didnt mean that someone stuttered or just looked for a suitable word for a long time, i meant people who seemed to... mumble, kind of blab, like just straight up mutter out some almost unintelligible sentences with a heavy amount of slang, usually with a low of derogatory terms
*lot
not low
idk how i typed that one
ain't.... haha
The same argument can be said about about a lot of countries
People like to dump their negative thoughts on the us just because it's a meme
But if u were to be objective
You'd see that there are countries with far worse fluency levels
Despite them being native
Being a native doesn't grant the privilege of being the best speaker of that targeted language
maybe the best opportunity, but not a given
i agree but... like... when i see, or hear, or talk to a speaker in my native, who really sucks at the language, like makes a ton of weird mistakes, mispronounces pretty often, has a pretty poor vocabulary, or just can't get the idea out of their head, everything all at once, then most likely they are from the countryside, people from bigger cities would not make mistakes like this, at least not in most places... while the US or the "richer" countries seem to be having the opposite case more often
maybe its not the US... maybe its just the modern world, because the people who do that seem to be pretty rich, but not rich cuz they have a career in something useful like medicine or engineering or just anything productive for other people, rich because they got a career from some internet social media, where they just shared half-naked photos or screamed to camera, they made the money, and now despite being "upper-class", living in a big city while having a substantial income, they still speak as if they were taken out from some barn in the countryside
I am from what you would consider the countryside in America and I am competent. It’s more values than anything in my opinion.
Not many people respect the ability to speak or read well it seems
In the US
First world problem
im in uk and idk how to speak good
so i chose beginner lol
i just forgot all the g rammar rueles
Some of them are*
i can explain stuff and express myself but like
i mess up on all the grammar rules lol
and punctuation
am from the countryside too, but am polish, and well... what i said was, i guess, based on my experience, so probably you're right
yeah true
like you're mentioning people from the US
and what i kind of did was that i took what i saw in my place, and made an assumption that this could be the case in a different country
which is almost doomed to be wrong
||btw i wanna have a voice like yours... lmao||
Inject testosterone
nah i dont care about it to that extent
Lol
Anyone from the Great Lakes region of the US?
Great lakes dweller here.
When I say "Lay the child on his belly" can I use that as a neutral "tutorial" or is "his" in this case explicitly for a boy?
I'm unsure if "their, the or his" is correct
(pls ping!)
“His” explicitly means that the child is male, but it can mean that the child is being put on somebody else’s belly of whom is a male.
With context it works.
You can say “its belly” to say the child is put on its own belly.
Alright thanks. My target is to make it neutral as tutorial.
I normallly use it
What do you mean by “tutorial”?
Do you mean “neutral as possible”?
But Google translate me often into German then a female naming
Ohhh
"how to lay your child on the belly to give a massage" like that
Ohh
But keep it neutral
Hello
Great question!
Perfect, I understand.
So I can write "Lay the child on it's belly"
its belly* and yes
its —> represents possession
it’s —> contraction of “it is” or “it has”
Yeah its and it's is always a bit tricking me 😣
Now you know the difference😉☺️
hello everyone
Also great question!
*to learn from it 😉
thank you
I think thats more a thing for #🫂|beginner-chat 🙂
Here are explicit questions like "how to write...?"
if I'm at interview how can i answer the questions
I don't know what you try to say 😄
Self introduction questions
If you are at an interview… the questions really depend. If the questions are asking about yourself, be honest about yourself, who you are, and what you value. If the questions are based on a specific scenario, then the answers can vary, but try to use common sense and your own knowledge and logic to answer them.
Guys i think i have fallen from my fluency grace.
Now I'm officially an intermediate
#feelsbadman
||possibly a beginner||
I don't have the right to correct people anymore.
If you know something that someone has trouble with you should try to help anyways
I'm just going through a weird period rn called, the frustrating plateau decay
What does it mean ?
It means im hitting a plateau that i couldn't surpass and on top of that im actually losing things I've learned.
Nothing is more frustrating than losing ur progress and being stuck at a level that you're not satisfied with
I feel shi**y rn
If you are plateuing I think you might be working on things too advanced for you currently or you aren't working on anything advanced enough, it depends on where you are at in comprehension.
I mean i wouldn't say that they're the most reliable results but...
C1 / B2
Is my most likely level
But i think i dropped to b2 or even lower, don't really know
However i have no concrete evidences on my claim so it's basically somewhat unreliable
If you are B1-B2 work in Intermediate for a while and once you can get B2-C1 again you can work on advanced.
Same
Oppositely (Aw-Poe-Sit-Lee)
I mean, they're not like mario levels where u basically know how to beat them lol
daaaang that was so easy
because I heard the letter F now i heard it perfectly
thanks man
The journey can be really vague
I don't even know what im lacking, and what i need to work on
No but working with people on that level could help you at a better pace.
I haven't gotten evaluated
No problem.
No 1 wants to work with me
Not for free at least
Just hop in a voice chat when its open and talk with people.
They will more likely than not worsen my english if anything
Read an easy story in your own language and English version side by side.
Or there are English books with definitions and pronunciations of many words included.
Ehhh...idm if there's a convenient way to do it
I'm sure you can find videos online.
Recommendations ?
Can try
Can i say you SOUND prettier than you LOOK
Hemingway is simplistic in writing style therefore easy to grasp..
I don't see why not. It just might be considered rude possibly.
It's a standard enough compliment to talk about someone's voice if it is good.
@cobalt sand i heard people say tolerance a lot
I don't tolerate
0 tolerance
Etc
What does it mean ?
In different contexts
How well you or someone puts up with something.
Zero Tolerance is usually for rules when broken you are punished without warning hard.
I don't tolerate means you disagree with something or someone.
Also lactose intolerance
"I don't tolerate nazis" = "I do not like nazis at all"
This word is really confusing to me
Lactose Intolerance means the people who say they have it think they cannot eat dairy products or they will get sick.
If you get sick when you drink milk drink enough and your body will get used to it.
Probably.
@swift briar i need help
I'm not sure if im the right person but sure,
What's up ?
I'm still here too.
i have a question, when telling story, is it okay to use simple present?
not written stories, but like when we have a chat with friends and telling a story
Unless the story requires you to give small details
It is better to keep things short when informal.
soo...is that a yes?
Yes.
@cobalt sand am i pronouncing it correctly ?
Or do i need to work on my R a bit harder
Ignore my accent though
No, perfect pronunciation.
Naisu
You r a guy?
I imagine only Europeans would have troubles with Rs because they usually make a rolling sound. Asian dialects don't roll I think.
i understand perfectly
I understand fine too but if you do have fast talks and want to make sure they sound different, P requires you to use your lips more but B you should feel more in your mouth.
B is soft
P is harsh
Yes
Also
I'll ask u a somewhat challenging question
Are u up for it ?
Sure.
Actually not really challenging lol
Was just exaggerating
Neither either
In spite Despite
What's the difference
Between all of em
Neither is refusal of two things "He offered me a Red pill and Blue pill but I chose neither"
Either is typically to compare two things "I wasn't sure what was in either of the pills so I didn't take one" or as a threat, "Either you take me to the pill store or I take you out"
In spite and despite are not different in definition. "In spite of our differences we are still friends" or "Despite our differences we are still friends."
In spite should usually only be used when talking to or about people
"In spite of the forest's animals I hiked through it anyways" can work but shortening it to despite sounds more casual.
i dont think thats really true
you can use "despite" and "in spite of" interchangeably
Depends on formality.
Ooo
In spite is more formal in my opinion.
i think so too, but again, they are 100% interchangeable
Why would you be formal when talking about yourself or inanimate things?
Ok i understand now
Unless there are other people you are talking to.
Both mean the same thing both are interchangeable
1 is formal 1 is informal
Noted
Thanks ❤️
not really
they are both neutral
you can use either in a formal or informal situation
It's just common for them to be used in the way I desribed.
You can eat either an apple or an orange but neither of them should be consumed right now
Is that a correct sentence ?
Lol
Yes it is. Good job.
yeah but id put "either" in front of "eat"
Thank u ❤️ headpat me
Why is that
What's the difference
I think putting it after the action is easier to understand that you are talking about the apple and orange seperately.
For anyone who isn't very fluent that distinction would be easier to understand that way I would imagine.
both are correct but to say "either" before the verb sounds much more natural as when you listen to natives speak thats really the only way you hear that kind of sentence worded
You can either eat an apple or an orange but neither of them should be consumed right now
Better now ?

yeah, that wording sounds more natural, but as i said both are grammatically correct
the united states
Which part within ?
the midwest
Nicetown, USA
in other words, central basically
I see
Midwestern people are usually the nicest out of all Americans.
Only reason i asked this is because I've noticed that people from different regions tend to...have a way of talking
And im not talking about speaking, just typing
Though that's just a minor observation
thats true sometimes
I'll show u an example
maybe because were always drunk
Probably
i live in wisconsin, its by far the most drunken state in the us
Bet he was from one of the cities
this person uses a lot of social media slang
Yeah lol
i find it extremely lazy that people cant be bothered to type "just" but rather "js." it is literally a two-letter difference
I think literacy rates get lower the more people in an area.
and social media
What's a literacy rate ?
predominately tiktok
Like IQ
tiktok is the pinnacle of anti-intellectualism
I talk using slang with my friends who know what it means.
In a place where people are trying to learn English I am going to speak properly.
I can see where you're coming from
no, iq has to do with intellect, its pretty different. literacy rate is the measurement of how well you can read, write, and speak a certain language
Isn't there correlation between the two
Like literature from literacy
Especially if it's your native language
So I think there is some relation here at least
Just a small one
no because like i said iq is more of an intellect measurement. literacy is a matter of intelligence, not intellect. if youre curious on the difference between intellect and intelligence you should google it
Hmm I see. I will do that later
Aka never
Yes
Lmao
But...intellectualism comes from intelligence tho
Don't it ?
Lol
I have above average IQ and I am literate. If the kids learned and practiced instead of looking at their phones they could read at 80 words per minute at least
You can't be intellectual and dumb at the same time
It has nothing to do with intelligence if you put in a small amount of effort.
I hate using IQ as a way to measure the difference between human
It can be a tool for people's ego
intellect is the ability to understand things and compute them and have wisdom essentially
intelligence is the ability to learn and retain information
literacy is a matter of intelligence because it involves learning new information and retaining it
True, but watching people get a bad score because they never paid attention and learned Algebra or basic history is pretty funny.
But isn't that the same thing, your ability to understand things mean that you're capable of learning and receiving informations
Or am i being dumb here
Understanding /=/ Learning.
I can learn how to cook but not understand what happens to all the things in the food as it cooks.
That's because you learned something specific
You don't understand because you didn't learn
knowing things = intelligence
understanding things and being logical = intellect
You can learn how to cook by understanding how to cook
thats kind of a paradoxical statement
All you need is the basic knowledge of cooking to do well.
You just have to use some effort to not mess up
And if you do mess it up you will know what NOT to do.
Fair fair
I didn't even think we were arguing you're fine.
You learn from mistakes, not successes.
Because if you succeed you knew how to win already.
I don't know if i should feel bad or good about this lmao
Bad cuz: i wasn't even making good argumentative points
Good: i wasn't being too provocative or annoying
Lol
ill attempt to provide an example here.
take the example that two people are trapped in a room.
an intellectual person may find a way to escape the room because he can think logically. he analyzes the way the room is built and observes its flaws. he thinks about when the right time may be to escape so that he is not caught.
an intelligent person may find a way to escape because he has inside information on the room hes trying to escape from. he knows what the room is made of and how to break it, or he knows that the ceiling is made of a certain material that allows it to be easily cut or something
Hmmm
A good comparison.
So what ur saying is
Intellectual = logical
Intelligent = smart
By smart i mean
Knowledgeable
correct
however, i think "smart" is a very vague term and it could refer to intelligence or intellect
it seems to be a very general umbrella term
a smart person could be a logical person, it could be a knowledgeable person, or maybe it could be a very gifted person in a certain craft or habby
I think we should retrace back to english questions and not go too far ahead lol
Or we may get lost talking about it.
Ok so
Alleviate and Elevate
What do they both mean ?
Alleviate (Ah-Lee-Vee-Ate) means to release or take pain away. "The cream alleviated the burn right away"
Elevate (El-Lah-Vae-T)
means to bring something higher
Like an elevator
alleviate means to cure something. e.g. to alleviate pain, stress, boredom, anger, etc.
elevate means to go up. e.g. an elevator elevates you into the air
"The man elevated the cat from the ground"
Can i say
so… we can say that a prodigy has much more intellect than average person?
correct
The man elevated the tension of the discussion
correct
Noice
yes, elevate can mean bringing something higher literally or figuratively
like a physical thing or a concept
Your help alleviated my learning frustration ❤️
alleviate can be used in a variety of contexts. basically it means cure. its not just pain you can alleviate, but also sadness, boredom, stress, etc
I should have said ailments instead of pain but yeah.
@cobalt sand yeah be careful krypt is sharp
He's gonna overtake your sport if you don't step up
My mind is adapting to a place where I feel I should study 10 hours a day
(Jk) lol
Dang, i’m gonna be productive as hell
The brain can only learn so much at once don't go overboard
It's 2am I'm too tired to fight for it.
that’s me
Yeh, thx
My brain can't take in a lot
Only takes out
Maybe 1 day I'll be able to find my private tutor
Who would help me become the best verison of myself

Version*
yeah, verizon is pretty cool, i use verizon for cell service 👍
maybe i should have said cellular service. youre right, cell service is incredibly ambiguous. who knows if i was talking referring to telecommunications or locking someone up in a cell.
Gottem ? I guess lol
Can we consider "persist" and "insist" synonym words?
Not really
Insist means to urge while persist means to continue something.
Alright thank you
pretty much yeah. however, i think "insist" is a bit more of a powerful word. if i urge you to do something, i highly recommend you do it. but if i insist you do something, its almost like im forcing you to do something and i wont take "no" as an answer.
"forcing" you isnt really the right way to put it honestly. a better way to say it is its like im demanding you to do that thing.
if my mother urges me to do my homework, she highly recommends i do my homework
if my mother insists that i do my homework, shes basically demanding i do my homework, and ill probably be punished if i say "no" or dont do it
Oh actually yeah, the same thing I saw when I looked it up like insist is more like not accepting refusal(Don't come here again, if you insist on coming back, I'll have take some measurements)
Okay dude, it's clear now
Thanks for the help, it's appreciated
great, not a problem
I only slept for 4 hours today, can i say
my BODY is RUNNING on only 4 hours of sleep? 🤔
exactly
"Sometimes we can see only a small part of an otherwise huge living creatures"
Why "otherwise" here? What it means in this context?
when you say sometimes you give an understanding that it isnt all the time.
otherwise is speaking about the time that is not included in the sometimes you made reference to.
I want to hear my boyfriend’s laugh,
Do i say,
can you send your LAUGH or LAUGHING to me? 🤔
haha a bit awkward.... but, laugh is correct.
maybe just have a voice or video call and record it?
😅🫡🫡
I know it’s really rude to tell someone this,
but i just want to know the language difference,
I Would never say it 😳
i dont like your ’laugh / laughing / laughter??’
(the way you laugh)
Can you send me a recording of your laugh?
just say like this, otherwise a little awkward...
@flat rune But I think you are a boy...
laugh
Ummm maybe
Just an example i made
this is a little awkward
So, LAUGHTER is the sound ppl make when laughing and
LAUGH(as a noun) is the action of laughing?
verb is the action
Or this can be. Hey, can you send me a clip of your laughter? I miss hearing it!
Anyway, it's awkward too. lol
but less awkward...
yes
to part a
part b doesnt really make sense... to me
laugh is a verb... laughing is the ing form
obvi
Yes, it is.
Laughter refers to the sound that people make when they laugh. It is the noun form of the word.
On the other hand, laugh can be used as both a noun and a verb. As a noun, laugh refers to the action or instance of laughing. For example, you can say, "His laugh is contagious" or "We shared a good laugh."
action words are verbs. maybe there are exceptions, but i dont think so in this case

"His laugh is contagious" or "We shared a good laugh."
those are verb uses
These are uses as a verb. "He made me laugh" or "We laughed together."
In these contexts, laugh is referring to the action or instance of laughing, rather than the act of producing the sound of laughter. It is used to describe the experience or expression of amusement or joy.
So it's a noun here not a verb.
the verbs in these sentences are "to be" and "to share"
english is SVO, subject+verb+object, we -> subject, shared -> verb, a good laugh -> object
so usually the verbs will appear after the subjects, unless there's some odd construction coming up, like "neither do I" or "little did he know i was gonna do a triple backflip landing on my left ear, which would end up supporting the weight of my whole body"
you can have more than one verb in a sentence. what i said is correct
They aren't used as verbs there.
yeah you can, like i know, but these examples do not show laugh as a verb so unfortunately it's not correct
Well. Do we have to go through this kindergarten-level topic? Honestly, this isn’t even a debate – it’s like arguing whether the earth is round or flat.
yall can debate if you want to.
No need to be conceited, but no there's no debate.
its not conceited, its just the way it is. if anything, it can be seen as a verb or a noun. ill concede that much.
Well, yes. It can be used as both a verb or a noun, but they're nouns there. They aren't used as verbs.
ok
If I knew another language before english, am I not a native english speaker? I live (and always lived) in the USA.
- Is it Air CONDITIONING or CONDITIONER? 🤔
=====
2. The machine to wash your clothes is a WASHING MACHINE? 🤔
====
3. What do you call the machine to heat the water you need to shower? 🤔
- What do you mean? Both are possible words but I need context to choose the appropriate word.
- washing machine.
- water heater maybe.
air conditioning: when referring to the system or process of cooling and dehumidifying in the air in a room or building
air container: typically refers to the specific device or appliance used for air conditioning.
When we talk about general preferences, we can use prefer or would rather. The meaning is the same. right?
Yes. They mean the same.
- geyser
native language = language spoken in your family dominantly
Very similar but it's worth noting that there can be slight differences in usage and nuance between the two phrases in certain contexts. Prefer is more commonly used in general situations while 'would rather' is often used in more informal or specific contexts. Additionally, "would rather" can sometimes imply a stronger preference or a more specific choice between two options.
ok but i just wanted to know if would rather can imply GENERAL preference
🫡🥴
why woozy face...
ur welcome
is "Accept their as-is" the correct grammar for saying: accept a overall persons manner?
https://www.hausjournal.net/wp-content/uploads/Teppich-klopfen.jpg
Is that:
- "He beat the carpet vigorously out"
- "He knock the carpet vigorously out"
- "He tap the carpet vigorously out"
"vigorously" does stand for "powerful or strong"
In German it is "Er klopft den Teppich kräftig aus". If that helps 🫣
Could be replaced with pillows, shoes, sponges, etc.
I get mainly for "ausklopfen" beat, smacked, slapped.
But I want the name that sounds like you knock a door 😅
Beat smack, slap sounds like a flat sharp sound.
But I want a thud sound
Like bonk
“accept them as-is” is probably more appropriate
“their” wouldn’t make sense grammatically
You normally just Knock on a door or Bang on a door
Lunar did good I’d just like to explain it further, ‘Accept their as-is’ would sound like ‘Accept their as they are’ if you wanted to extend it
Accept them as they are = Accept them as-is
But I want to write that the carpet beater does make a thud sound like a hammer
thank you @brittle mortar - and @cobalt sand for clarifying - Appreciate it :)
Tap out sounds very soft
No problem!
You are welcome.
Pat the head, Slam the carpet down?
Petting or patting
I want to beat the carpet with much power out
But not let it sound like a box fight
“Loony beat and smacked at the carpet but it was in vain, because it wasn’t alive”
Just say beat the carpet
Beat out usually means knocking out
Okay. Using the gif search with beating shows me what I'm looking for.
I think my "problem" is that i love German words xD
That's spanking
Not knocking out
Thats the term of it
