No
No cinnamons sorry
Do you know the difference?😁
Have sum
Ty
Do u know the difference between a bus and a train ?
Yes
i mean i know what a car means usually but not that kind of car
Oh ok
What is it
Train goes choochoo bus is bus
Wrong
One is trained more than the other
- BYE
but like would you say a car or a carriage lmao, you know what i mean now, hopefully
BYE
Say Car
Carrige is old man
hm fine
thanks
This is a carriage
Call that a carriage tho
Carge
Lol
I feel carriage is like a mix of car and carrying
They mixed it and it's a carriage
mix mix mix
am not sure because it is karoca in polish, and it has some similarities i think, so it couldnt be that polish just took the english word and mishaped it so weirdly, english probably took a carriage from some older word
Nice
when it comes to trains then i guess someone does
probably...? british people are always hard to predict
Trains use rails
Eh...
I think the best rule of thumb here is to follow what is being used worldwide
Or the most*
(i don't want to get political here, but just want to understand this news title 😅 )
Anger, acrimony and reconciliation:
NATO inside workings spill into public view in wrangle over Ukraine
🤔 i know newspapers have their 'own' grammar in their titles to save space,
but i really don't get what the second part means 😅
Just to be clear to the widest range of listeners
tell this to all of the uk citizens
am gonna be glad if they listen
ive no idea about any of this
It’s saying how NATO is actively talking about the situation with Ukraine and the war that’s happening. A “wrangle” is a particularly long dispute, and “spill” in this sense means reveals.
So a long dispute over Ukraine
Does the article talk about something like that? @flat rune
Wrangle wriggle
no, like, i got confused about "NATO inside workings", i didnt realize that this was meant to be like a whole subject
i saw these words on their own
Tricky

What
I should be doing that with french but im lazy i can do that another time
Idk
i hate articles, i read books
I hate both
although these are weird too...
I don't read any
i only read newspaper's titles these days unless im really interested 😅
so longggg 😳
That what she said
i think that's why ppl are so easily brainwashed these days
look at the revenue of p#rnhub and other sites like this, of cigarette producers, and alcohol companies
i think these are the biggest reasons
some people say slavic men are wild
Guys im being invited to a party
I shall attend that
In the meantime, learn some English willya ?
so, the people in NATO are having an argument about Ukrain and somehow it's got revealed to the public?
Yeah
Have fun
if i want to say i have problems reading newspaper in English,
do i use newspaper as 'uncountable'?
i can't read English newspaper / newspaperS??
In this context, you always use "newspaper" to refer to ONE whole issue of newspaper.
"Today's (news)paper is very informative."
This can be countable, so if you order 3 sets of the latest edition, you say "3 newspapers"
If you're talking about newspaper as a material (to wrap glasses or kitchenware), it's uncountable
How can I use dedicated (adj). I don’t get this word, with some examples pls
Hi, is having a stammer same as having a stutter ? ^^
It can mean two things
Dedicated (1) - a type of person who cares a lot about someone/something and is always willing to help. Example: If your parents always take care of you, they're dedicated parents.
Dedicated (2) - something that is meant to be used for one purpose specially. Example: In multiplayer games, if there is one server for America, you call it the dedicated American server.
this particular sentence sounds more like you cant read any of the English newspaperS rather than just one specific one. its a big number, but it is countable. things like water and rice are uncountable, technically
synonyms, yes
however, i would use stutter more for describing someone else's speech impediment while i could use either to describe my own
Alright thank you ! May I ask why though ?
just because our ears tell us this is what sounds better 🙂
sorry, i know thats kind of a non-answer, but many times, that's just how it works
No that’s fine, thank you for answering again ! I appreciate it ^^
happy to help!
Hi people.
What do you call an on-floor fan in English?
Hi
I smell with my nose
I smell by my nose
Which one is correct
How do I use grammer
Exercise can be used as n./ un
do morning exercises? Take exercise?
2 what are the differences between every and each
Hey guys, should I learn grammar to speaking, or maybe what themes of grammar really required for speaking?
it can depend on the shape...
box fan
tower fan
or just floor fan
with
anything in particular?
do
each is more for an individual thing
every is for all, usually 3 or more
this is a difficult one because there are many times that either is acceptable
as in, each day i go to the gym or every day i go to the gym
honestly, you don't NEED to learn grammar to speak. think about how you learned your native language, by listening to your mom/dad and other adults. we dont learn what past perfect continuous is, we just learn to speak. your best option is to start talking with a native as much as possible. youtube and spotify are great, but you cannot have a conversation with them. i hope that helps!
I'm very thankful
Tower fan, I guess.
hahaha
"I'm turning 9th grade" that's grammatically incorrect right?
i'm entering/starting/beginning 9th grade
or
i'm going to 9th grade
turning would be more reserved for an age change... as in, i'm turning 9 next month.
What does "Rizz" mean?
its slang for charisma, a word used for describing someone who is a smooth talker or charming, usually towards the opposite sex when flirting
It can also mean the ability to pick up [opposite gender]. For example, 'Jake has so much rizz'
yea, charisma
sometimes it doesnt have to be very visible, like the person who "has rizz" doesnt have to be rich, beautiful, or very fit, sometimes its just... a vibe
🆗
like sometimes it just happens that a conversation works very well and well you have a very nice start, then it could also potentially be a rizz
Got any idea how to be Rizz in one day?
yea, a smoothness
depends on the speaker, like for a great amount of people am just weird and my sense of humour is pretty bad, but for some of them am actually cute and they like my weird-ass jokes
so i can have a rizz on the second ones
Developing a sense of humor in non native language is difficult
ha, you either have it or you dont
maybe a bit... sometimes it just happens same as in native
That's harsh
Yea the situations can match up but the delivery is most important
It just doesn't translate one to one
true tho
i actually think having a sense of humour in a foreign language is more fun, because, possibly, the other speaker could be impressed by your skills or your ideas
if they know that its not your native
Ye..
NSFW Spoiler: (Mods remove this message if deemed inappropriate)
I have a genuine query.
||
If LMAO means "Laughing My Ass Off"
Then what's stopping LMDO (LMDO = Laughing my d*ck off) being an actual thing?||
Never heard someone say lmdo
Ever
But it could potentially be an actual phrase if enough people start to use it right?
Sure so could shmtjanxhvlrirhs

That's not entire gibberish
Use LMDO when the emphasis is greater
Or more intense feeling
when just using LMAO won't suffice
i guess its the same as when you see a machine which allows you to withdraw cash from your bank account, then you call it ATM because of automatic teller machine, and yet no one knows that ATM also means ||ass to mouth sexual interaction||
atm can also mean 'at the moment'
you can get rizz inefficiently by: going to an attractive person and saying "Hey [insert name here], are you a campfire? Because you're hot, irresistible, and I can't help but get closer for a sizzling adventure!"
..
"do you think I'd be able to tell if some spider walked through my face while I'm sleepin". "walked through my face" is that incorrect
Yes, because a spider can't walk through your face. A correct answer might be "went on my face"
how about walked across my face?
is there no Grammer check website like one that actually works
I realized this might be wrong and checked it in a website that checks grammer it said it's correct and then on some others those ones also said it's correct when it's not-
inefficiently is an understatement
went on my face sounds like the spider excreted on your face... the correct wording would be "walked on my face"
hi
tell me, what way of learning English will be the most effective for a person using a translator?
who knows 200 words at most
practice with a native speaker
That moment when you use ChatGPT to teach you how to be Rizz
Can someone explain this sentence? "It was amazing the number of quite intelligent people whose ignorance and stupidity had melted somewhat in the fire of her scorn."
"oh babe, you look like a garbage! lemme take you out"
probably her contempt for them was so strong, that she just neglected and mocked them being intelligent, and thought of them as ignorant and stupid instead
but i dont know what "It" refers to in this sentence, so hard to tell without any broader context
it could also be different... context makes a huge difference
Do people actually use “Vice General Manager”? I thought we can only use “Deputy” when it comes to Manager…. Haven’t heard about it so can someone pls explain?
I thought about it and I think I understand what is means. People she is talking to are scientists. I think the author trying to say that being intelligent makes them arrogant and stupid in some situations, and her despise towards them makes them lose that arrogance and stupidity.
Thanks for answering btw 🙂
it says nothing about the arrogance, the sentence you sent contains only ignorance, which is a different thing
Typo
ah yeah, makes sense
i actually had a thought like this as well
but i kinda overlooked this way of understanding it
its actually correct
watch lots of english speaking youtubers , even if you dont understand them keep watching them eventully you'll understand everything
It’s correct
Is there a kind of list containing popular abbreviations for talking/chating?
@frosty charm you can use different words too - "do you think I'd be able to sense if some spider wandered over my face while I'm sleepin". , you're correct but you can use this too
you mean gen z
ikr
fr
omg
oml
damn
yes
You don't have to add "A" to everything
Just say u look like garbage
Or A bag of garbage
will you forbid me?
from doing that?
Yes
What does it mean: "the minister had it coming"?
— How did you find this new graffiti? The minister really had it coming.
— I'm not a fan of politically charged artworks.
well, "a" should be used, maybe abandon this and don't use "the" either?
maybe just abandon the tenses, and the grammar all together, and never use "a", never use tenses, etc?
i dont think so lol
...
use a on first time things or just simple thing s , dont use "a" when you're using some known stuff like moon sun and if you're telling a story again to someone avoid a
use the moon the sun , and if you wanna be speciffic you can say "remember about the cherry i ate yesterday"
i know all of that
in the past i used to not use "a" at all, and i dont wanna repeat this thing again, like probably better to maybe abuse it, than to omit it everytime
It means something was inevitably awaiting the minister and something was going to happen no matter what.
Going to the cat cafe ?
Had what coming ?
That is, the minister was going to be prosecuted for this graffiti?
Nothing
Yeah
Thanks 🙂
You had nothingness coming
you cannot use "the" with countries name unless it has some extra words to it like "The United kingdom"
People usually say THE to emphasize on something (could be a slang)
Yes yes im from THEEE x country
He's THEEEEE guy
must be a slang
Not just A guy
No it is 100%
"marriage when"
Lol
When you're 24
hm i dont wanna
And has a plot
I'll get married at age 30 - is this correct and how can i make it better
*your
@mortal citrus when i has a house can claim that i has a plot ?
Me or him ?
You
at the age of
Lol
Say “I’ll get married when I’m 30”
or what cat
said
Or im marrying at 30
so you're getting married when you're 30 wow

STOP
Yes
yes, you're getting married
He's luring you into accepting him or her to be your significant other
im marrying at 30 street
Anyway
me and myself we’re going to Greece
Can i say that i own a plot
Him im
If i bought a house
him
sure, thats gonna be double price of the tickets
Hum
Does that make sense
Lmaoo
Uhhh yes if the house isnt there yet
nope , just thought of a joke after you explained lol
Lol
So a plot of land is land that is basically just dirt and soil, and when u buy it u get ready to build a house on that plot of land
Yes
you dont say you've a plot after making a house on it , its like saying i ate raw meat
So even tho u technically own the land when the house is on it, u wouldnt say “I own this plot” bc its already implied
Just say
“I own this house”
can i just ignore that and instead of building a house can i put up an entire factory to pollute the air
#English
Sounds good
Oui
Gotcha
plot is like a movie story line
+2 XP Fenti
I know
block can be a triangle lol if u want it to be
🤗
and when you have 64 of them then it's a stack, 100% sure
Looool
But that wouldn't make sense if its a block
Right ?
Yes u can
(Being sarcastic)
A block of triangles
🥺
(#English)
Lol
what are some great english words you use in your daily sentences
Ambiguous
Ubiquitous
LMAO
(Jk) i never use it
tbh yeah, id expect that from korean and japanese, but english? lol
do i look Ambiguous?
Wait.. what's the plural for Japanese ?
Yeah
Nah
why would it have a plural
it is already a plural
Correct
japenis
I guess since they end with es
Like Chinese
So their plural and singular form are the same
chikness
I was also wondering why "borned" isn't a word
Borned
It should've been
I was borned
because european languages are mentally ill and they have a concept called "irregular past tense"
i was borned in liverpool at the railroad switch house
Nah they just suffer from bad england
Yeah technically lmao
Very incoherent England structure
I study Japanese but I’ve never thought about the plurals before HAHA
which jlpt
What does that stand for?
oh wow
U were born in a pool full of livers ?
That's scary
why yall chatting in this channel
japanese language proficiency test, i thought you knew that, like the N1-N5 levels...
born v2 form - bron , new idea that will change the english forever
if trans can change english why cant i
I never took that. I study Japanese in school as a subject
ah
Good A luck with that
that would explain a lot
Dunno, we should probably move though
||WHY DID THE OTHER PERSON SAY IT'S NOT||
Not really, we were talikg about english questions
its correct
i dont know why they said that
Well there isn’t a rule for talking in here and obvi I’m not gonna get y’all in trouble for it but idk i feel improper talking in here just bc it’s only English questions
Who said it was incorrect?
shhhh lets talk about grammer
It should be fine anyways
🥹
Saying “walking through my face” is correct. Not everything you say has to be literal
I can’t remember the exact quote btw
We are just having insightful conversations that involves English questions here and there, and fixing grammatical mistakes and chat just for a little while.
We do a bit of everything
thats why i said it was correct but also provided some alternative like wandered over my face
Yeah that’s ok, it’s actually nice that people chat in here sometimes
That’s also correct. Both work
Ok
Yes
It’s more natural that way too
we're trying to change english , i was bron in india , oh wait i cant use in because in "in"dia , i will use i was bron on india
So u were born on top of it ?
I think more people tend to use “on” and to me it’s more natural
Nice
You can still use “over” though but it’s preferable to use “on.” I can’t explain it well because I’m a native LOL
damn no , i will then use i was bron inside india
By more natural do u mean more "ears pleasing"
?
Yes, and also reading
Sorry, as an English helper my bio states that I am stupid
In explanations specifically
😂
I'M on train - definitely not pleasing
But I try my best
Well im worse than you
Non native and is dummy
So that's pretty bad
No no don’t say that, you’re not
Don't be empathetic, im used to it
use im not good like you , it sounds positive
I appreciate your sentiments tho...
But im bad in general so ut doesn't matter who am i comparing myself to
Just because you’re non native doesn’t mean you’re bad. You definitely understand things better but at the end of the day, our levels are incomparable because we are both good :))
But you are gooderer than me
Being a native grants you the upper hand on me
Lol
And I don’t care what you say about yourself, I’m being a hypocrite but I see good traits written on sticky notes on your back that I can see
I have to struggle just to accomplish things you accomplished effortlessly
Please I struggle in English too. Not grammar wise but essays? Stories? Topics? They’re stressful
for example "i killed them" intead we can be more positive "it was great action just like john wick"
I know that was a joke but this lowkey made me uncomfortable-
You're struggling from success
I'm sorry
Trying hard though, and that’s what matters
It’s alright ^^
Im bad at all of these
In both languages
even if people accomplish faster than you , guess what you still keep grinding"english grammer"
Just asking why do you have both “beginner” and “fluent” roles?
This.
Cuz I'm a switch, as in, i can either be a complete beginner one day, or the most fluent guy on earth
My brain isn't at a 100% functioning rate
i consider myself good in english but in other things i struggle than normal people , i figured consistency is key "english grammer"
This sounds so much like me, honestly
Im very inconsistent
And im not joking, i mean it
There will be days where i sound like
I don't even know english at all
im understanding what you're saying "english grammer"
Happened to me
And days where i can takeover conversations
And go on a Tangent
For hours
||Just saying, we should stick back to the topic of English if you guys still wanna chat here||
||Just bc I’m scared of getting in trouble even though I’m a staff member HAHAHAH||
we're still talking about english
shhhhh
Haha
Can ask the mods
If you don't feel comfortable
About the specific rules of this channel
It's my favorite due to only having to deal with very few people
I answer questions, i ask questions, i help others, i basically do everything that's related to this channel.
It’s just that I’ve never warned people/seen others warn people for texting in here
you can scroll up my all texts are now related to english grammer
In the other big English server, people get warned but imma double check
Doesn't have to be strictly grammar or vocabulary
It's any english question
I should give you the English helper role
You’re great bro
although i still put "english grammer" in my every text , just editted them
I'm too dumb for that, but thanks if you think highly of me.
btw i've a request
Hm? What sort?
can we focus more on english question channel
I’ll just ask others anyways but you’ve been helping quite frequently and I appreciate that
Wdym by this
It’s a little unclear to me
like we can talk to server owner to put some attention on english question channel
Wdym by attention
to make it more active
Got examples ?
Oh, you want more people to ask questions?
What do u suggest for that ?
That depends on the members themselves, tbh. We can try encouraging people but it may be hard
The activity in this channel is good so far though
maybe i can promote this server
slowly fade away for being ignored twice
lol
sorry about that
the only thing i dont know in english is when to use capital and when to not
You use capitals for nouns and at the start of a new sentence
hmm
thanks
I'm learning english from youtube
And after a ,
Right ?
Hello im james, What about you ?
No, you don’t use capitals after commas unless if it’s a noun
Good!
btw beginners chat seems like general chat
dont you think
But more peaceful ain’t it?
In English, a capital letter is used for the first word of a sentence and for all proper nouns (words that name a specific person, place, organization, or thing). In some cases, capitalization is also required for the first word in a quotation and the first word after a colon.
ya
Seems complicated lol
what if i use countries name , do i need to use capital for all of them or just the first country
This is true
I forgot about the quotations and semi colon
Oh and uh if it’s helpful, I can correct your sentences too
Just don’t expect me to have the best explanations on planet earth
Go for it
like Japan , America - is it correct
There's google, don't worry too much about it
Even if you said something incorrect, it can be easily googled and having it googled
i tend to focus more on people's explaination intead of google
lol
Just do whatever makes you understand more
kiu are you mod?
The whole point of this whole thing we're doing rn is to send and receive
"His iq is inversely proportional to the chapter number (564)"
What does this phrase mean?
Yes
No space after “Japan” but this is correct
Can you provide the full context/extract please?
Based on that limited context i assume that his iq is decreasing ?
Tho I'm 90% wrong
Hard to really judge
inversely proportional is a math term means related to , and context matter of what is 564 chapter is
The guy said
"This guy's iq is inversely proportional to the chapter number"
That's the same thing
Oh, I understand
To my understanding, the guy that said this was exaggerating how “not” smart the person is
To contrast the large chapter number
I’m also assuming inverse proportion is at a decreasing rate
In a nutshell, I’d simply phrase the sentence and meaning as “This guy’s IQ is decreasing”
hello
Hello
That's what i thought too
Yeah lol
we love hyperbole!
a technique in English
or a literary device
it’s exaggeration
I found all the hidden knowledge in this world when kiu explained hyperbole
is this sentence correct
grammatically, yes. truthfully, no. haha
Yeah lol
it was supposed to be hyperbole
i understand. im playing into it
oh
The king populated the city in his own image.
Does this sentence make any sense?
hmmm... is the sentence trying to say the king designed the city the way he wanted?
Sounds very poetic
Or philosophical
From what i understand, the king wanted to populate the city according to his vision ?
Or his standards
It's hard to piece it together, it may not mean what it says (not literal)
Lol
we usually think of populate to refer to increase number of people
Thank you. I ran into the 'populate (something) in one's own image' from a video game so I made that sentence to see if it works.
The king populated his city with people according to his vision ?
Idk...that sentence is kinda complicated
yea it doesnt really make sense...
like it sounds as if he had so many wives, and so many children, that the whole city was made of his offspring
and according to his vision maybe cuz like... he chose only women he liked, when it came to appearance
I wonder what is your name/what your name is.
I wonder, what's your name
You only say "What's your name?" (What is your name? is more formal)
'what your name is' is the indicative form. For example, "I don't know what your name is." If it is a question you change the order as I have done above.
you're incorrect
"I wonder what your name is."
same as "I was wondering what her name was."
if this helps you
two first people from the top are not natives, the first one from the bottom is a native
like sure "I wonder... what's your name?" would be fine, but the break after the first part of this sentence would have to be significantly longer than usual
so the correct answer is I wonder what ur name is
Another question every/ten minutes
each ten minutes
Every ten minutes

A question: is it said the water floats the duck or the water makes float the duck?
I would say the water makes the duck float
@misty terrace oh ok. Thank you
i would say the duck floats on the water... water doesnt make ducks float
Agreed
@cerulean tusk but what about a toy (those that they use in the bath)
hello
i have to make a question for this answer "Yes, she had better respect her godfather"
i'm confused about how to make it as "had better" is an expression. can someone tell me what it would be like?
Hello guys. A question: "They'd read full when they were five gallons light." What does it mean? (I figured it out like: they realized something was full, but there was 5 gallons of fuel.)
good question, but it is not the water that is causing the toy to float, the buoyancy of the toy allows it to float.
to me it sounds like they thought something was full, but in reality, they were short 5 gallons. a fuel gauge in a car can give this perception.
hello noûs! i am not sure what the question is...
uh ye it's kinda weird. thanks anw
Yeah, your mass is the reason for your float
That's why our sun is pulling everyone/everything due to it having a bigger mass
We are getting pulled by the sun due to the mass of our planet
Pulled*😁
had better on its own essentially adds "or be punished" on to the end,
"She had better respect her godfather or she'll be punished"
sometimes its shortened even further to just better
"She better respect her grandfather"
ohh
how do you say the file size of a video game
like Dota2 is about 45 GB, how do you say it?
FILE SIZE?
GAME SIZE?
do you say **GB **as
**GIGABYTE **or GeeBee?
same with KB, MB, TB....? 🤔
Gigabyte
yes, same for the others
I draw illustrations, ads, graphic designs **ON / IN Adobe Photoshop ** (a software application on PC) for a living.

do people watch BBC news in 🇺🇸 ?
Why wouldn't they
im not aware of this in English
I think you meant accumulative

Grammar ? Hello ? Thank u
Brain is rusty
I don't think normally... maybe if there is something regional happening like related to the royal family
Isn't there an American brach of bbc ?

are you from chile?
BBC America, yea
nope

it is a kind of language that uses the idea of forming new words from smaller parts ("morphemes"), for example Japanese often likes to create new words from already existing compounds, like shoku is food (i dont have japanese and chinese characters on my keyboard so i cant type it properly, sorry), but shokutaku is a dining table
no
although be careful with terms like this, most people will not know them, it is pretty linguistic and nerdy
Be careful being nerdy
this is especially in comparison to analytic grammar, which tends to use entire words to form meaning instead of adding suffixes (like Chinese), and fusional grammar, which uses suffixes that combine several different meanings (like Spanish) instead of keeping each suffix distinct (like Japanese)
nice, but not my flag
unfortunately i have no idea about spanish, but yeah, makes sense
an example of fusional grammar in Spanish would be like "corrió" from the verb "correr" (to run)
-(i)ó = past indicative third-person singular, all as one unit
@cerulean tusk also the color of your flag is flipped/inverted lol
In ur pfp
Wrong colors order

Yeah
Hello , if there is anyone here can help me I want to improve my English , by reading books and doing conversation .
Heyy
We can be a English buddy
Yeah
the amount of money people save 'increases
in inverse proportion to the amount' they spend.
🤔 other ways to say this,
without using 'in inverse'? >
ngl, you had me doubting myself for a moment. maybe i will change my name to Authentic Texan
(the less you spend the more you save)
Go for it
Authenticity
Is important
a penny saved is a penny earned?
Less output more input
Would anyone explain to me the difference between assure and reassure? also perhaps help me with an example. much obliged in advance. 🎩 👌
almost the same but its just that you put more emphasis when you reassure
when you assure someone of something you tell/confirm them that its true or real.
when you reassure, you make them less worried about something by telling them again that its real.
Assure to me also is more umm used in formal and maybe professional settings. “I assure you this deal will make us all rich. “
Will it tho ?

Businessbearman
I don't suppose you're related to manbearpig then? 👀
I was until I changed my name
How so?
My old discord tag was manbearhorsepig
So I always joked I was related because that South Park episode is how I got my tag
Someone took manbear before me
I enjoy just going by manbear
@steel thicket
🤣
Aye, me too 🙂
Looks like it
There's only 3 authentic people
I got my nickname from my actual name Yu||dhist||ira, from Indian to Japanese name lol.
Oh my I do apologize for getting the channel discussion oot. Should we stop?
reassure simply means to assure again. the prefix re is almost always going to mean again
reuse
repeat
rewatch
rewind
redesign
restart
there are, very likely, exceptions to this
Reboot
What is a QUESTION in MATH called?
a INQUIRY or just QUESTION 🤔
Ah...
Just a question
Inquiry is like... when u want to ask about products usually
Complaints and inquiries
An inquiry would be seen to be more specific and detailed than a single question.
Basically question = broad
Inquire = specific and detailed
remember, read, reckon
well, there is probably wayy more of these exceptions lol
respect, resolute, revenue.... i thought of a bunch while i was out at the market
@dense oasis remember isnt to member again?
are you thinking about "problem"?
the equation is, i think, when all information is on both sides of the "="
when the equation needs to be solved is when its referred to as a question or problem
or even "solve the equation" meaning, provide the data needed to make it an equation
how do u all use would to make presumption or expectation?
I don't think i understand your question
ok let me explain, how dos it work here?
would for presumption or expectation
That would be Jo calling. I'll answer it.
We saw a police helicopter overhead yesterday morning. | Really? They would have been looking for those bank robbers.
what does would stands for here?
He's presuming/guessing
That they're after him
He's basing He's opinion on limited information
o k, now such: -that guy had an accent| -it would be Jo
wait
never mind i dont get it
Expection means: a strong belief that something will happen or be the case.
"reality had not lived up to expectations"
Or i expected him to win
Basically it means setting your bars to a level for something
(Example) if they didn't release iPhone 15 this month im gonna be very disappointed
Ever heard people say, lower your expectations ?
presume and assume both mean "to take something as true," "presume" implies more confidence or evidence backed reasoning. An "assumption" suggests there is little evidence supporting your guess
So in that case based on the evident of him hearing a helicopter he presumed that they're chasing him
He didn't expected it
Because it's not something he anticipated or knew beforehand
@thorn owl is it clear yet ?
lmao
i believe it is not
haha
hi
Le vent se lève, il faut tenter de vivre. - the wind is rising, we must try to live.
Can any1 tell me what does it exactly mean ?
Hello, please provide the entire extract
||real quick: nice selfie you posted few days ago||
||oh meh gawd this was on Wednesday 😭 thank you though||
||better late then never||
||true true||
I feel so disappointed in myself...no matter how much i try to improve i just seem to hit an invisible wall that kicks me away from getting there
I hate how bad i am at learning....
I guess you can call this a rant/english question,
Sorry if it's an inappropriate place for it, just frustrated.
How many words do i need learn per day?
I don't know it will help you or not but as a fellow learner I just want to tell you that you are not alone who feels like this.
I have been trying my best to be Fluent in English for four to five years. If I look back what I was four years back, I certainly see an improvement. When you want to see that if there's an improvement or not in you, Dont keep the the time frame small keep it large.
I stumbled upon this quote when I was going through the comment section of a youtube video.
"We overestimate what we can achieve in a day,
We underestimate what we can achieve in a year"
I am not quoting the exact words but it is somewhat along those lines.
And Canguro English once said that it generally take you decades to reach the level of Native. Don't loose hope.
For example take the economy of two countries one is developing and another one is developed.
The one developing will have a much higher percentage of growth rate in its GDP annually than one which is already developed or will soon be considered as developed.
for me the improvement is absolutely clear and discernible, two years ago i was not able to touch a book in english, today am reading books in this language with high comprehension, even if there is still a lot of rare, difficult words
Read a book or newspaper. Don't trouble yourself with remembering words because after a day or two when you don't use them you will forget.
When reading book or a newspaper, just don't forget to look for the meaning of the words which you don't know and write down the meaning just beside the word. If the word is used regularly,. Then there is a high chance that you will again find the word in tomorrow's newspaper or the day after tomorrow. After revisiting the word five times in a month, for the sixth time you won't need to search its meaning. And that's how you add another word in your arsenal without even trying mugging up a list of words.
i disagree, actually do take the effort to remember the words, i use Anki for this, it distributes my flashcards across days, weeks, and months, so i just review things on daily basis for like 20-30 minutes a day, it helps a lot, and if someone wants to know more and more words, then the dictionary checks and immersion is not always enough
but yeah if someone wanted to study them without things like that, with an old-school paper notebook method, then it would suck
Yes, i do so. But yesterday i wrote 50 new words from book, and i didn't remember almost all of them.
I several times read them again, though.
dont take everything at once, 50 new words from a book would take me like 5 days, because i distribute new words usually like 5-10 words a day
i know very well that am gonna forget, but after few times when i forget, and few times i recall, the idea will be reinforced
I can't say which one is the right method. Then perhaps it all come down to what suits you the best. I am happy that it is helping you but sadly it never worked for me.
Well as black cat said don't try to stuff yourself at once. Take small bites.
hello
I found this line in a ghibli anime, "wind rises". It's a french phrase
in Chess, do you say
the white king is **ON **or AT h1 (the spot in the very up left)?
Neither is really incorrect. Probably more common to say the piece is "on" a square since in chess with a physical board, the pieces are positioned literally on the square.
Kh1
Chess notation is a convenient way to keep track of games, so that you can replay them to study tactics, understand mistakes, or impress your friends. Try out chess notation in your next game - you'll find that nothing is more satisfying than that well-placed exclamation mark after the move that wins...
how many **timeS **do you have?
do you have enough time for a 20-minute game?
🤔 time or timeS
Time is uncountable usually. It's mostly used in the singular.
"How much time do you have?"
You can use it plural when referring to multiple times, though.
For example, "a sign of the times"
In chess you do not say "20 min game"
You mention the time format like 10+0
That'd be a 20 mins game
there're certain situations/conditions** WHERE / IN WHICH** it would be correct but in most cases it's wrong.
🤔 **WHERE or IN WHICH **or both are right?
i've been to detroit 3 times
Yep, this is correct. Each "time" can serve as an instance, so that works. "several times" is common.
do you USE and SEE the word 'blunder' a lot? 🤔
in chess yes
outside of chess i heard it too, but am not sure if it was reaaaally frequent
What is something starts wtih j which meaning is similar to dizziness or giddiness. It is some kind of feeling that's for sure
means to make a mistake/BAD MOVE?
this is not just a bad move, it is an absolutely awful move
like it sounds like "a mistake", but waaay more serious
`Ullman stood five-five,
and when he moved, it was with the "prissy speed" that seems to be the exclusive domain of all small plump men.The part in his hair was exact, and his dark suit was sober but comforting.
I am a man you can bring your problems to, that suit said to the paying customer. `
🤔 "prissy speed"?
for example when you blunder a pawn by accident, but your position doesnt really change and the advantage is on your side/you both are still equal, then it is a mistake, but if you blundered an entire bishop for free, then this is a blunder
"blunder' is also a verb, as you may have noticed
🫡
^^^ 🤔
so his speed was low, he moved with an elegance, prissy is a pejorative word for someone who acts as if they were very upper-class
like they seem to be wanting to be respected, but it is soo prim, and excessive, that it makes you wanna ridicule them rather than really respect them
can i interpret it as 'pretentious'? 🤔
hello guys, please help me understand Why in the word like "Bitdh" we use the article. Fro example : To mark the birth of Harper Collins Publisher
Birth is it the abstract noun
Im trying to understand article's points

people usually use a gerund-**DOING **with the verb COME? 🤔
he CAME RUSHING into the room, grabbed his backpack and left again
Well, you can't have two finite verbs in the same clause without a connector/conjunction
Thus after a finite verb, gerunds or infinitives are used
Gerund vs infinitive depends on the context/sentence
can BUCKET be used as a CAR SEAT? 🤔
no way she's sitting in an actual BUCKET 🪣 💀
🫡
About 3 hours, why you ask ?
(they are in a car near some big mountains)
Danny was impressed with the mountains.
"One day" Daddy had taken them up in the ones near Boulder, the ones they called the Flatirons,
but "THESE" were much bigger,
and on the tallest of them you could see a fine dusting of snow
🤔 "THESE" here refers to the current one they are near OR
the ones DADDY had taken them up to in the PAST(one day)--the Flatirons?
the current ones, i guess? 🤔
It's a type of car seat (or other vehicle) yes
not to be confused with a car seat, which is what babies and small kids sit in.
a bucket seat usually has slightly raised sides to keep you in the seat when going around corners at a higher than normal speed
i dont really like that definition
Take it up with Dr. Oxford von Languages
ill leave him in his wrongness
done
I got really satisfied ’(when) seeing’ him winning the major champion.

Composers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards
Lyrics:

I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no
When I'm drivin' in my car

Cato negro...what a weird brand
I have one of his picture ON or IN my instagram?
Can i call a lady MS. + HER FIRST NAME?
"On" is the standard, because Instagram is a (social media) platform, and you always say "on a platform", not "in"
But either works fine
Yes, but since you're already referring to her as "Miss", which most likely means you're in a formal setting, using her last name would be better
IN n OUT
Miss cheese
Personally I hit them
What do you call it
when you turn your head around too fast you hurt your NECK? 🤔

When no VC to hear Fenti's 3 accents
Ah ok
Lmfao
do you feel 'satisfied' when answering people's questions here and** (WHEN)** they thanked you afterwards?
🤔 is (WHEN) needed here?
Nope. It sounds redundant. You only really need 2 "when"s if you want to ask about 2 separate instances that aren't related or connected to each other, usually with the conjunction "or" in middle
But in the sentence above, someone answering the questions and getting thanked afterwards is (hopefully and usually) paired together. If you help someone, they thank you, so it's one continuous flow of events. So when you ask if someone's satisfied, you mean after they are thanked (which also makes more sense considering the question). Besides, who wouldn't feel satisfied when they're thanked, so splitting it into a separate question is redundant.
That's just my impression though. Also, "they thank* you", not "thanked". The sentence tense is simple present
couldn't thank you enough

I feel satisfied

hello i need some help to put some sentences into the passive.
People apply mathematics in many different activities. -> In many different activities mathematics are applied by people. Is this correct?
put the comma to distinguish the main sentence and the support sentence
Whats passive
Mathematics are applied in many different activities.
When the subject of the active sentence are vague phrases like people, everyone,..., you can and should ignore it when putting the sentence into passive (so there's no "by people" here).
My English teacher also taught me a tip with the placement of the "by" phrase which I think is very useful: BY before time, BY after everything else
And finally, any prepositional phrases (in many different activities) should go after the passive verb, usually near the end of the sentence, which is why you don't put it at the start of the sentence
thanks for explaining
Anyone can tell me what passive is
?
I think it'd be faster and better for you to look it up on Google. They'd do a better job explaining than I would
Indeed
thank you ❤️ so "People use the binary scale in computers" -> The Binary Scale is used in Computers
this is so confusing😂
You just got it right. So you only need a little practice with different sentence types and you're good to go
Allright nice, i got one more 😁 People form the square of a number by multiplying the number by itself. -> The square of a number is formed by multiplying the number by itself
tomorrow i have my english b2 test
Very nice
Good luck my friend. I think you'll do just fine
thank you😊, i hope so
*"Discrete Math" is not the name of a branch of mathematics,
like number theory, algebra, calculus, etc.
Rather, it's a description of a set of branches of math
that all have in common the feature
that they are "discrete" rather than "continuous".*
🤔 DISCRETE?
Guys, I'd like to know what it means to pay your way out of something as in this sentence below:
Similarly, time affluence involves small decisions that allow you to have more and better time, such as saying no more often and paying your way out of time consuming, unrewarding tasks.
Anything
And ur understanding of English is dark
Yes my English is the most authentic in the server
Everything i say is very reliable
Cuz it's not authentic enough to be used
Guys, would you pay some attention here for God's sake?
How come?
Nah. So pretentious my dear!
Is it supposed to insult me?
Get to the point and spare me this long-winded speech.
Man, for God's sake, do you u have an answer or not?
What's your question ?
Paying your way out means that you do something (maybe pay with money) just to avoid time consuming and unrewarding tasks.
