ive got more of them
one day this list is gonna be bigger than the native's mind
i believe in you
To be fair
Im not aiming towards that
More isn't always better
I just wanna learn essential expressive words
To strengthen my articulation
Capability
Me who can't even understand what you just said 💀
Skill issue tbh
That's why I'm here
🤭
“I may not have always been”
“I may have not always been”
Both correct 👍
Most reliable EngHub native
I love helping others😭
So rewarding
especially when Kimcheese ticks my responses
I can give u a star
Yes
how can a word be synonym of another word
it can repalce it partially but not completely
??
A synonym is a word that has the same meaning or very similar meaning to another. For example, “beautiful” and “attractive” are synonyms and can replace each other completely. Some others like “show” or “illustrate” can almost replace one another but they have slightly nuanced meanings.
One could argue that they can completely replace each other but I was demonstrating that some can have nuanced meanings.
we use words like
i believe in god
i Have faith in god
but when we use same for weather the words doesn't feel that smooth
i believe it will rain today
i have faith it will rain today
doesn't it seems weird ?
Especially with “I have faith it will rain today” that doesn’t sound natural. You can just stick to “I think/believe it will rain today”.
“To have faith” isn’t really used when describing weather but has a more religious tone as mentioned in your example. It demonstrates hope and can be used when encouraging someone else “I have faith in you”.
this basically means two words cannot have same meaning?as the definition itself says :- a word is a sound or letter or group of sounds or letters that expresses a particular meaning
There are instances where both “faith” and “believe” can work, but they cannot fully replace each other like you said.
Fenti are you a native?
Yes.
Words will always express a slightly nuanced meaning that is different to another.
Yes.
can you dedicate me 30 mins conversation time in dm we will just talk about random topic you have to give me feedback about what should i focus upon vocabulary sentences or what. fine?I have a flight attendant interview next month so i have to work on english
Good luck with your interview
man i can't make a sentence properly while talking i bit nervous so i am starting with basics by first tying things while writing and then will try with vc . hope this strategy works well
You can also try watching mock interview videos on youtube. Seeing how other people do it is a good way to learn, especially for something practical like an interview
@supple holly there aren't that many videos of mock interview, like people consider it easy thing so they dont basically upload videos of this interview nor does the airlines do
How would I use ChatGPT to practice advanced English?
Nevermind I sent 'Make me practice advanced English.' as my prompt and the response is good enough
Nice
i guess am the same, i just tend to exaggerate the need, like the need for the familiarity with many words
but
kinda doesnt matter what kind of word it is, sooner or later most of them will be used anyway, when am listening to podcasts done by natives then sometimes they just use some very rare vocab to embellish their speech, or to highlight some issues
I just realized that my country has the lowest proficiency score
Not the absolute lowest, but within that level
Rank 102 out of 111
Poland is top 12
@finite lantern
there is a lot to be improved in this country, still, and i think proficiency is one of these things
maybe we speak a bit of english on average, but the overall mindset of the people is still not that high, there is racism, which kinda makes it pretty useless to speak english, like if someone's radically racist then why bother knowing an international language, it's natural you're gonna talk to black, asian, or any other people
i dont mean intelligence, i mean mindset, and attitude towards different humans
Mindsets can be linked to Intelligence
@dense oasis wanna take this quiz
Beginner, intermediate or advanced? A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2?
In this video, we are going to take a level test together to find out what your current level of English is! In addition, I will explain the grammatical / vocabulary point of each question, so you can not only test yourself, but also learn a lot!
#britishenglish #instantenglishuk ...
I passed them all
I only got the idiomatic questions wrong
Cuz..well..Idioms
Some, not all
i hate tests, they make language learning worse
Yes
@mortal citrus
U should take that test as well
Is cheating allowed
Overall i got 27/30
Yes

Okay
for example he is just wrong here, for me when i go earlier, i feel actually worse
when i sleep less, i feel better
so for me C is correct
like if i go early then i actually do feel tired
I think you're just built different
exactly, thats another thing
But he isn't necessarily asking YOU, generally when people sleep less they feel tired
That's a logical sentence
It's also natural that when someone sleeps too little, they are tired
yes
and thats one of the reasons why i dont like tests, everything, almost, is about the interpretation
Going to bed early doesn't mean you sleep for too long, it just means you sleep before midnight. And sleeping early is supposed to be sleeping at the correct time
But in this sentence, what's the most logical answer to it ?
Regardless of it being true to u
lmao
Questions are usually written in the most neutral way possible. You want everyone to have the same answer as you after all, so it's really really rare for there to be something up to interpretation
yeah, they are, but it doesnt make it rare to have a different idea or response, for example for one person the question from above is very logical, like the B would make sense, but for me its just plainly nonsense
thats why i choose weird things on tests, i disagree with the majority lol, and thats already -1 point, because i have a different view on the world, and guess what, you cant fix this, everyone has
Black cat you gotta keep in mind that context is really important here
Not what YOU think is Correct for YOU
Sarah was feeling sick, she ate meat,
Just because YOU don't feel sick eating meat DOESN'T mean that the sentence is incorrect
Personal experiences are irrelevant
it is correct when it comes to grammar, but it is incorrect when it comes to my logic
Just because it's illogical to YOU doesn't mean it's wrong necessarily
this one is just incorrect both in terms of grammar and logic, look at this:
"I like beautiful landscapes, Although they are too big and i feel overwhelmed."
does this make sense? tbh it doesnt, i would choose "because" in this case as well, even if it sounds weird, then "Although" like this in the middle of the sentence is just plainly wrong
Sarah likes meat, sarah is vegan.
Even if this sentence is ILLOGICAL in an IRL setting, it's still a "correct" sentence.
it is very logical
because the fact that she likes meat doesnt make her eat it
for example i like chocolate, i dont eat sweets
well i like it, but i dont eat them, and the fact that i like it doesnt make me eat it
Fine,
She ate meat, she's vegan
this would be weird
like its correct when it comes to grammar
but it seems irrational, cuz i would assume that if she's vegan, then she's not gonna eat meat
i mean the tests are irrelevant, not the personal experiences
like the closest to an objective assessment you can get is speaking and writing test
I'm not saying personal experiences are irrelevant in general
Just a specific condition
A specific circumstance
i got 26/30
On a good day
U got 26 and you had the intermediate role
See how insulting that was ?
I felt offended
i guess am biased here anyways, cuz like i really despise the tests, they always make me anxious, and even if i was able to determine the answer in a few seconds, then when am under the time pressure and am well aware of it, then my response time is prolonged due to the stress
same when i know someone is gonna judge me speaking, or writing, then i dont even fully focus on the task, because i am just afraid of being constantly judged
even if someone assesses me irl, and they tell me i scored perfectly or almost perfectly, i still feel pretty bad, because i would not like someone to be in a position of judging me
yeah but it is more than usual
Guess so
same reason for why i do not like to talk to people even in my native language, i dont wanna talk to them, cuz humans judge each other a lot
if someone tells me "hey how's goin'" or "how's the weather today" to start a small-talk, then id like them to just shut up, but id be kind and answer them not cuz i wanna, but cuz i dont wanna be rude
i guess, i gotta get used to it, and i guess i will once i move out to a city, there's people everywhere
People that don't know u will wanna get to know u
By asking small questions
It's just the common way of initiating conversations with strangies
They can't just start up by asking... what is the meaning of life
Lol
They will look at you weirdly
And leave
i am genuinely the kind of person who would do this
...

This was a weird test
It was a bad test
29/30
Damn
That stupud although questiob
Haha
As long as it doesn't include Idioms
I'm gonna nail it
Lmao
right
like this was especially weird
We are thiccc as thieves
Hey guys, what does the sentence, "He asked me what i should do for a living." mean?
specifically what does the should mean in this sentence? Is it correct?
He asked you for your suggestion on what he should do for a living
what should i do about my problem (how shall i handle my problem)
You should ask experts (you are better off asking experts)
But that would be an incorrect usage of reported speech. "He asked me what he should do for a living" would be the correct way of saying it. Assuming that the given sentence is correct, the meaning that you propose could not be true. Am I wrong?
So it's either the incorrect grammar or the different meaning IMHO
hey there! could someone explain me definition of 'willingness', and such a phrase like 'to be willing to'?
The phrase 'to be willing to' means that the person is offering to help or to do something. They want to do it, it is their own action like their own choice and not a forced one. You can think it as it's their wish to do that action. This phrase also means that they are ready to do it what ever the action is. Willingness I think means like genuine actions and it can mean like eager.ness
Ex. My co-worker shows a willingness attitude towards her work
ok thx, but what about when it comes to question, like: are you willing? that means are u ok with doing smth or do u mind doing smth? or even ready to?
right?
Technically yes it means that, but are you willing? is about making a promise with that person.
Ex. Hey are you willing to help me in my homework? This sentence is saying that if you made a promise in helping me with my homework.
It depends on what are you trying to ask.
I feel like 'would you like to' is a better option because it doesnt sound so forced upon the other person. Its like giving a offer or choice to the other person
'are you willing' is also giving a choice to the other person, but it sounds a bit hard to denial or difficult to give a opinion as an answer.
oh that blurry meanings
Basically If you're willing to do something, you're agreeable or ready
just like: i dont mind doing
i guess it is equal even
yes that works
ok but
can i use "i dont mind doing" to express the same idea in any situation?
or in some cases or in some contexts they can differ somehow?
I don't mind doing in a "are you willing" context ?
If someone asked me, are you willing to study ?
I would just say yes or no
Hmm well it can differ, so like I don't mind doing in some cases can mean like its something that you're fine with doing but it won't be ur first priority or something you would focus on
like i think it rubs off the vibe that its fine for me to do it, but like I aint gonna focus on it as much
My luck is like flour in a stormy day above edged thorns was spread
And barefooted people are asked to gather it whatever blood they shed
Does this make sense? is it good?
am not a native, so possibly i may not get every single nuance of this and every single issue, but
My luck is like flour in a stormy day, above which edged thorns were spread
And barefooted people are asked to gather it, whatever blood they may shed
but
am not sure about this
like the first sentence of your version doesnt make sense to me
it feels as if you meant either My luck is like flour in a stormy day, above which edged thorns were spread or My luck is as if a flour in a stormy day above edged thorns was spread
but i also feel i can be very incorrect here... it's so ambiguous...
@mortal citrus help :ccc
Nice rap
i thought it was supposed to be a poem
Im being sarcastic
Fair
meow
Discord is an app where you can talk to people via chat, video, or voice. You can also screen share.
@swift briar i found a funny english word
fare
vs
fair
they sound the same
yet, the meaning is so different lmao
There's a lot of these
i know, i just kinda, never knew "fare"
i like how similar "excursion" and "execution" were once for me
Flower, flour
they are also 100% the same i guess
Deer dear
May I ask why is my answer wrong in this phrase:
Sorry looks like I cannot post images here, so the phrase that i need to translate from spanish to English is the following: "Alguien me dijo que el desayuno costó extra" my translatio was "Someone told me that breakfast costed extra"
Who knows how to solve this question?🌚
which question?
Please fill this out first then repost with questions you are confused on
14,17,19,23 are incorrect
15, 16, 18, 20, 21 are all correct
22 I can’t remember if it’s would you or do you
for 22 i think D would be the better choice
i see why 19) could have been tricky for some learners, this is actually a question in present simple, so you use "does/do + subject + verb" structure, you started with a verb, so you did "what job has he?" instead of "what does he do"
it comes out better and the response makes more sense
i remember very clearly how i used to forget this small thing back in the day lol
thats a great way of explaining it
I agree with this
for 22 the d) is the only correct option
because
oh, yeah
fine
like technically almost all these answers could happen irl but
but its pretty irrational
yeah, they all work but d would be the best
its like that with most of them, english speakers will understand to an extent what a person is trying to say
but still
yeah often you will get by with making a lot of mistakes but... sometimes its funny, like a cab driver asks you "where are you from?" and you tell him "oh, am from China" instead of "am currently at XYZ airport entrance XYZ"
cuz he meant where are you willing to go from
yeah its just little things like that,

Yes
What does “dang” means in text msg?
😊
It's not a common way to say it, but natives shouldn't have any issue understanding it. It's roughly the same, though people can frown for reasons other than sadness.
I asked the question here before the other server xD
Oh I see
Got it!
Thank you so much ^^
what's pippo meaning
What does Inquisition mean
Part 1:
1-3 are correct
4. repaired -> was repaired (past tense passive voice; the car isn't performing the action)
5. leaving -> left (past tense; the train left in the past)
6. learning -> has been learning (present perfect continuous; the learning started in the past, continued in the past, and is still ongoing. This could also be past perfect cont. if we assume they're no longer learning)
7. come -> comes (right tense, but we need to pluralize the verb for third person)
pay -> will pay (future conditional; our sentence is the first conditional describing what we will do in the future if something else happens, so we need the modal verb "will")
8. married -> have been married (present perfect continuous, plural; they married in the past, stayed married, are still married, and plan to stay married into the future. We can assume this because of "since 2001.")
9. been -> were (subjunctive tense, or hypothetical/wishful; we use this tense when a wish/hypothetical is being expressed. There's no indicator for if this is past, present, or future, so as long as modify the verb to be subjunctive, it's fine.)
10. meeting -> am meeting (present continuous; we're describing plans already made that should happen in the future)
11. raining -> is raining (present continuous; it is currently raining, and it will likely continue to be raining for some time into the future.)
12. finishing -> will have finished (future perfect; the course will be completed by some time in the future)
13. saw -> had seen (past perfect; though the simple past is commonly used in spoken language, the most grammatically correct tense for the third conditional is the past perfect here.)
gives -> would have given (past perfect conditional; we're describing what would have happened in the past if a condition was met. He did not see her, so he did not give her the ring. This is the 3rd conditional.)
You seem to understand the simple tenses, but you don't seem to understand the more complex tenses. I would work on those.
A long period of intensive questioning
Lol?
what is the difference between "said", "speak", "told"
Said is like past present term! "I said to her ------" you could also say "I told her -----" said just needs an extra word which is to! And speak is to talk present term "I am speaking!" "She speaks" so it's talking about right then and now. "I speak to her ----" don't sound really that fluent/native! So people use spoke! That is the past present term for speak! Hope that helped and have a GREAT day💖💖
Thank you so much
You're welcome! You're so amazing! I'm so proud of you and I'm so happy you're learning my native language(or getting some tips/help)!!! 💖💖💖 I hope you have the best future EVER!!! You will beat Elon musk for sure!
Difference between " How about you ? " or " what about you "
Which we prefer?
I prefer what about you.
Okk thanks
I prefer what about you! But it depends on the conversation like "oh I think I'll order this.. how about you?" Sounds good! But so does what about you. It really depends on what you wanna say but what about you sounds really more friendly! So I would go with what about you
Hope that helps! Have a great day💖😁
Okk thanks for your help🙂
You're welcome!
You're welcome. But remember it may vary in different situations like she described above. Have a good day.
He* 😁
It seems i am mistaken. Sorry for that.
It's alright! :))
Sweden hails historic step as Turkey ’backs Nato bid’
🤔so turkey ‘rejected’ Sweden’s offer to join NATO?
Turkey supported it.
"To back something/someone (up)" is to support them, agree with them, sometimes even providing them the necessary funds/materials
Also if Turkey rejected it, it wouldn't really be a historic step for Sweden
…… 😅😅
I see the word ‘hail’ so i thought…..
Thank youuu
Wait…
I misunderstood
Theres a verb look like hail meaning to stop
What is it
Halt?
Any questions?
Questions
a question
mostly to natives but not only, basically id love to know which one you'd feel like you use the most: luggage trolley / baggage cart / luggage cart? and would you say conveyor belt, carrousel, transporter, or maybe luggage carrousel?
baggage or luggage cart... whatever rolls off the tongue
conveyor belt usually for straight line transportation
carrousel for something like baggage claim at the airport that travels in a loop
hmm okay that's useful
thanks
😁
Baggage sadge

is that baggage missing one wheel?
baggage cart😍
Baggage trolley
I think that's what brits call it
Trolley
In the us they call it a cart
Literally this

Hello everyone 👋👋
I have a question about inversion
My friend sent me this example:
Just when you've bought a computer that you think will last a lifetime,(along comes) some new software that need a bigger hard drive.
Can i say out comes instead of along comes?
BEHDHWUDUWJ
Can you elaborate please
Oh god
Yes
whats the meaning of pippo?
wha
woah
Ye
the second part of your sentence has a subject, that subject is "some new software", it is a noun, and it is in its singular form, and verbs that are associated with singular nouns in present simple tense (which you wanted to use in this context with this verb) will have -s added at the end of themselves
LMAOAO
And pepp man ? I think that's how you spell it
Oh sorry repo*
Here you will find the best quality titantrons for use with WWE 2K14.

I'd say neither
You're learning English, you're fine, it's a confusing language
But i couldn't even come close to understanding what he meant
Like me fr
Either way thanks for your help🙏🙏
Out comes:
the way a thing turns out; a consequence.
"it is the outcome of the vote that counts"
You only say that if it's a negative statement i would say
One day
at a time
May I ask, is there are any kind of online grammar tests for English where I could progressively develop my skills? Usually I'm more into learning with practice. Thanks
There are thousands upon thousands
Just pick and choose any you feel most comfortable using
What i like may not be the best for you
And vice versa
So it's incorrect to use "out comes " instead of "along comes".
Out comes = negative
Along comes = comes with it
I usually find weak tests and they are rather annoying than helping
I would say along comes
Outcome also mean results
I kinda get it.
But i still don't understand how it's negative
In that context
Is the last statement
A good or a bad thing ?
It's a bad thing
Hmm
I mean outcome means the result of something
The outcome of buying that laptop is x and x
But we can use comes out as a positive.
"I can't wait for the new iPhone to come out"
But u said outcomes
Not comes out
Ik.
Doesn't it retain the meaning if we used inversion?
Outcomes and comes out are 2 different things
If that's what u mean
They don't mean the same thing
I'm not using outcomes as a noun
They wrote: "Just when you've bought a computer that you think will last a lifetime,(along comes) some new software that need a bigger hard drive."
Im using it as an adverb and a verb
I don't think i can adequately explain it, but that sentence is correct, and the one u asked about is incorrect. @reef forge
Np np
Thanks for bearing with me🌹🌹
Sorry for not being fully able to explain it.
Outcomes doesn't make sense in that context
Is all
Don't make me feel bad for being a dumbass🤣🤣🤣
No you're good
Not your fault
It's mine
Can't really simplify it
Not an English grammar teacher so i wouldn't 100% understand
Maybe you should ask one of the teachers
(Mr james)
It's all good
I think out comes would also be correct. Come out is to appear, be released or published. Virtually the same meaning as "along comes"
because along comes signifies that something came into existence at one point
so reverse order in the phrase "come out" would not really affect the meaning, but it's a more "poetic" (if you will) way to say it, I guess
I was arguing with my teacher the whole day yesterday.
And she wasn't convinced
there's a website: https://sentencedict.com/
Sentencedict.com is a online sentence dictionary, on which you can find good sentence examples for almost every word. We try our best to collect and create good sentences and wish you can make progress day by day!
you can search for usage examples
From what I see, I can only conclude that it is a far from popular way of saying it
Something obscure is not necessarily incorrect
"i am here for sometimes" is it garmatically correct ??
Sometime
I've been here for sometime
what if i use "from" instead of "for"
I'm here from sometimes ?
yss is it correct???
Yes
It's one of those rare sentences that people wouldn't use to describe something
Correct but veeery unpopular
ohk
in polish people do either "O KURWA XDDDD" or "EOIHFKEGFILFHWLHDOWHDQOHQOIH" for "wow"
so i guess i relate
This is the question I'm supposed to answer -> why does Mandela say that freedom is indivisible?
What does freedom is indivisible mean?

Indivisible means unable to separate or divide by saying freedom is indivisible it means it cannot have parts. Either you have freedom or you don’t @thorny spear
hello I need some help! I am learning English and want to practice with someone.
I am not native speaker and also suffer most of the time at listening on accent. Should I fix my listening first? Or continue speaking on the same time? so should I start speaking in voice room ? or not ? And which voiceroom should I join?
Good question I think if you are shy then practicing your listening skills would be a good first step. Most of the speakers in voice channels are not at a fluent or native level. If you are confident in speaking then I would advise you to try and talk as it will help you improve quicker
All of the voice rooms are open to people of all English levels so channel A0 - Beginner will not just have beginner speakers for example
Sounds incorrect
Doesnt sound right
Youd just say like "im here sometimes" right?
Correct
thank you.
You use them for Plural sentences
Book, Books
Bed, beds
Etc
Plural = more than 1
1 pen, 2 pens
Third-person singular verbs: In English, when the subject of a sentence is in the third person singular (he, she, it, or a singular noun), the verb usually requires an "s" or "es" ending in the present tense. For example:
- He walks to school.
- She eats an apple.
- The dog barks loudly.
Regular verbs: Most regular verbs follow a predictable pattern when forming the third-person singular present tense. The general rule is to add an "s" or "es" to the base form of the verb. For example:
- Walk becomes walks.
- Eat becomes eats.
- Bark becomes barks.
Irregular verbs: Some verbs do not follow the regular pattern and have unique forms in the third-person singular. Here are a few examples:
- Go becomes goes.
- Have becomes has.
- Do becomes does.
It's important to note that subject-verb agreement is specific to the present tense and the third-person singular subjects. In other cases, such as plural subjects or different tenses, the verb conjugation may be different.
Here are a couple of additional examples to illustrate subject-verb agreement:
1. They walk to school. (plural subject, no "s" added to the verb)
**2. **I walk to school. (first-person singular subject, no "s" added to the verb)
Hi
Neither of them likes/like English
Neither side/ sides has/have good reasons
is there someone explain the above for me?
In English, the use of "s" or "es" endings in verb conjugation depends on the specific rules of subject-verb agreement.
"S" ending:
- Add an "s" to regular verbs in the present tense for third-person singular subjects (he, she, it, or a singular noun).
Examples: She walks to school. The cat meows loudly.
"ES" ending:
- Add "es" to regular verbs in the present tense for third-person singular subjects that end in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z.
Examples: He passes the ball. She washes the dishes. The fox watches from afar.
help help
Neither of them likes English
Neither side have good reasons
our grammar book said Neither side has
His bag is the same as mine=his bag is as same as mine?
His bag is the same as mine.
Though i would just say his bag is same as mine
To make it shorter
But both are correct
So..as..=as...as...
Yes as ... as
His shoes are as x as x
As good as mine
As bad as his
As x as x etc
It has to always include 2 as if you were to compare 2 things
Not very clear
Have is used with the pronouns I, you, we, and they, while has is used with he, she, and it.
I have, you have, we have, they have
She has, he has, it has.
Neither side has
is better?
In the context of neither side, we use have
Neither sides are wrong?
That's correct
My brain is fried, please don't judge
Nay. It's fine. I just don't want someone else reading this learn the wrong thing
Ty for your help
No you're fine, it's my fault
me?
@misty terrace
.
thx
If a verb ends in s, sh, ch, x, z, and o, do we have to add es after the verb?
Your accent is good
generally, yes
of course, there are exceptions.
for example, quiz - quizzes
thats not really correct, we need an article "the" in front of same. i cant say for certain that this is all the time, but i think it might be
these are not equally correct... #1 is ok, #2 is incorrect
this is one of those times when, as a native, i know its not correct, but i cant really tell you why... our ears tell us when something is wrong as is the case here
Could be a slang way of saying it then
fair enough
Oh no, i wasn't say that they're both equally correct, i was talking about my own example.
The 2nd one is incorrect yeah
oh, i was replying directly to Cindy on that one 🙂
I feel you on that
no prob
I feel useless when i can't find an adequate answer to a question
eh... we dont learn the rules when we are kids, we just mimic mom and dad
@cerulean tusk some people say,
Hate that movie, instead of
I hate that movie
I was operating on that mindset earlier
But it's not proper English
As in very informal
yea very very informal...
i think we have better ways of making our speech more efficient without going overboard
Yeah
it will only bug native speakers to hear that kind of shortening
well... native speakers that are into that kind of thing haha
Yeah ofc
People are just getting lazier and lazier
One day we will be able to speak without talking
im not one to walk around correcting people... say what you want, i just hope your listener can understand you... and that hopefully they dont pick up those habits
As long as the thing that they're learning is communicable
I mean
Communicatiable lool
I know it's not a word
haha
But yeah it's like really late for me, I'm sorry if I said/done anything wrong, i do dumb stuff when i feel tired, I'll go and rest you guys have a good time learning or helping or both, wish you all a good day 💗
im outta here also. later!
(It’s winter, heavy snow outside,
Sirius somwhere trying to find and kill Harry)
“what if Sirius Black turns up today? Now?”
“He’d have a job spotting Harry in this,” said Ron,
’nodding through the mullioned windows at the thick, swirling snow.”
“Come on, Hermione, it’s Christmas. Harry deserves a break.”
🤔so Ron was looking through the window at the snow outside?
Yup
lovely book, i wish i had time to read this series in english, i only read it as a kid in my native, and now i just read one book at a time, i mean other books which are always only singular, this series would take way too long so for now its no...
i have so many of series to read, like a literally long bullet list, but i can't just sit all day and read, i gotta do things, lol
My friends always advise me to spend just 30 minutes a day to read
Once it becomes routine, you'll read much faster and feel like you have more time to read
(I haven't tried it though
)
i do the same, but i always pick only books which end in one volume, like there is no second edition etc, because then i would spend too long on the same one and got bored due to the low tempo
I guess it just depends on the author and series itself. Not every book in the series will be interesting because it needs time to build up climaxes
yeah, true, but for me its not the easiest since you know, books in english sometimes do use a lot of weird vocab that i hadnt seen in my life before
i do it regardless, cuz like, whats the point if i read in my native, i can just swallow the books then, but i dont learn anything too much, am already a native
I'm sure there are series targeted towards a younger audience or English learners so there will be books with more familiar words. Or maybe you can try a different genre. Fantasy and scifi usually have a lot of strange words
i dont care about easy books
i pick the hardest i can
philosophy, sci-fi, science, fantasy
I thought you didn't like strange words in your books
horror too
i didnt, but there is no workaround, i cant pretend that weird words do not exist, because when i hear one irl, or see one somewhere, then am not gonna know it
I still want to be able to enjoy the book instead of playing google search every 2 pages though
thats my list for now, all english, i do not count books in polish (my native, actually ok there is one, but it doesnt matter)
That's cool. These are the two I just bought
Before that I was reading Lord of the Flies - William Golding
He has a beautiful way with words. I learned not only new words but new ways to use old ones
Especially the way he describes the scenery
horrors?
Both dark fantasy
ah, very beautiful covers
Lord of the Flies isn't horror but I guess it is creepy
I don't know the exact genre
are these editions yours? like are you the one holding these in the picture
Yeah those are mine. I just bought them last weekend
nice, i recentl bough 1984 from orwell and brave new world from huxley, but they are pretty tiny
most of the time i just read e-books
I might invest in a Kindle if I run out of book space
but I still like the feeling of paper
If I find new words, I prefer to write them down anyway. So I don't need a Kindle to help me look up the definition quickly
i mostly do e-books, cuz i always like to copy the fragments from the books, and note down into my Anki (software for notes)
Kk
when its not digital, then i can not copy so easily
I made a google sheets for new words or words that I like. But it's on my laptop
Easier to filter by POS or alphabetical order too
i dont like these, cuz the thing i use has auto-sorting algorithm which distributes the things to learn across days, so i can just chill, and the algorithm decides for me when i learn something new, or what i need to revise and when
Ahh that's so convenient. I didn't know there are apps that can do that. For me I am able to memorize the approximate meaning of a new word, so I really only need to look it up if I want to use it
If I read it somewhere else I can understand what it's supposed to mean
ahh, for me its a no no, i have almost 3000 of new words already noted, so i need to just logistically distribute this, i wouldnt survive without an algorithm which does this for me, cuz i would start forgetting them
now i can just revise like 100/day, and get like 10 new a day
Programmer grindset
if you didnt know and maybe you wanna try then https://apps.ankiweb.net/
its free for all systems, except iOS
ive been using this for like, 2 years now, to learn a lot of things, programming concepts, english, one time i used to study japanese and i was also studying chinese characters, it was a tremendous help, but i got no time for this one now so i dropped it
I will be sure to check it out. Thanks much
good luck, most common users are usually medical school students and language learners tho
What does this english-questions mean? Questions related to English or any questions in English?
Questions related to English
The hyphen is only there because Discord doesn't allow space in channel names
thx
If I say "Thanks for the valuable feedback" Does that mean it wasn't valuable in first place if it wasn't for me acknowledging it that's why I had to make it explicitly clear by adding the word "Valuable"?
No, it's not that deep. It just means you appreciate their feedback and think that it is valuable (to you or to the whole discussion/topic)
It's just a nicer way of saying "thanks for the feedback". By adding "valuable", you let the other person know you're actually grateful for receiving it instead of just noting/acknowledging it
Oh, I guess it's just me overthinking again. 😅
I can't believe I was gaslighted so bad that it now starts to affect my English skills. 😭
What happened to make you think like that
but I guess it could still be beneficial in some way with that mindset
Nothing, I guess. Stuck with people that are really, really good at manipulations.
not everything in this world is black and murky, i tend to be very negative and pessimistic too, due to seeing a few divorces and family abuse in the past, but not everyone is so mean and not everyone wants to deceive you
the world is not black, and neither is it cheerful and pink, it's just... as it is, dont put unnecessary worries on your shoulders
I just don't know. I don't know who is honest and who isn't. I'm a simple guy; I don't understand their ways of psychological tactics. Yet due to the unawareness I fell victim to every trick they play with me.
That's why I start to excercise caution now and analyze each and every word, sentence or action carefully.
this sounds like a very tough life, i hope you will not have to go on with this too long, vibrant bird
I should've socialized earlier in school or other public settings. I was (still) an introvert and rarely spent time with people. I think I've set myself up for a big trap. I'm trying my best to improve but sometimes I feel like is it too late or why I'm not making any progress?
it's never too late, unless you're 60 or 80 years old now, then yeah, it is pretty over
I'm in my 20s
then you have a ton of time for this, am younger than you by ~2 years and am similar, no reason to panic
Cool. I'm actually 19 but I thought why not say 20 because it sounded and looked better 😂
Yea, I hope it will improve
U 2 r nerds
Lol
Do u use stale a lot🤔
With food?
Stale, rotten
it is not the same
When did i say they are ?
you put them together so i think this could be the inference
He asked do you use stale
Yes
would you say that soggy could be thought of as an opposite of stale?
No
hm, okay
Stale means no longer fresh
cuz like, stale bread for example is hard to bite, it was staying out for too long and now it is stale, but
but what about the bread which is soggy? does this mean it is now wet and soft = it was probably staying in water?
Stale = not fresh
Soggy = wet and soft
Soggy fries are common
In bad restaurants
When it's not crunchy, it's soggy
Soggy is not necessarily a bad thing btw
Some ppl like soggy fries
And some like it crunchy
I guess i thought of them as the opposites because stale bread would be hard to bite, and soggy bread would be wet cuz it somehow got wet, idk, it lied in water for some reason, but "stale" is not limited to bread, so i kinda wasnt really correct lol
sometimes they just look like this and they are still crunchy lol
I've never had that experience
Lol
Soggy nasty
Cruchy = rigid
Soggy = soft and not rigid
Lol
Not soggy soggy
you made a funny mistake here, like "cruchy" instead of "crunchy", and it made me realize that when i pronounce cruchy but without english phonetics, then it sounds similar to a word in my native, kruchy which means "tender"
Remember to stream katy perry too
Ooo
Cruchy
Crutches
Sheesh, are you an eagle
why
Good catch tho
Yes
Lol
What...
what do you mean
LMAO..
Very sudden
No but like with english
elaborate
how would you like to test me
and what for
lmao
Spotting a mistake
Bc ur very good
Be prepared
One day i will ask the question
I can do that when im in the mood
Yes u too
When i get into my grammar cop mood
It will be a random time

And i will produce a complex text and you will have to spot the error
Can i smoke here?
Ig-
a big smoke

Organic cigarettes
Oh-
smoke sounds like "Smok" in my native, if i just ignore the correct english phonetics again, it means "a dragon"

Damn
Man
U and ur native
Everything sounds similar
dragon in my native language means dragon😎
With or without the accent ?
With
thats not the best, the best is when i compare japanese to polish, there are soooooo many words that sound exactly the same, or almost exactly the same, and have reversed meanings
Wow
do u like learning languages?
like the classic example, "daisuki" meaning "i love you" in jp, and "daj suki", pronounced almost the same, is "give me b#tches" in polish
Hotto dogu
Coca cora lol
i like east asian languages
but i know only a bit of jp...
is it the test you mentioned before
if it is then here is the mistake
LMAO
did i pass
thanks
Lmao
idk which one is more annoying, the more i know about english the more annoying it is lmfao
do u speak something other than american
oui
nice just add an e at the end and ur good
yeah thats the end of my f r o m c h skills
for me i speak english, probably, although i have doubts, and polish, and during my peak id read simple books for children in elementary school in japanese, but i forgot a lot and now am an idiot again
no time to study anything other than coding and english...
Thats fine
Onr day
when i get a normal job and live on my own then maybe am gonna go back
i remember myself posting that i started downloading wikipedia in english for offline usage in case i have some connection problems, and well
after two days of downloading, am slowly heading towards the end
So close
Fire away
