also just saying “not everyone can do it”
no problemmm
sometimes the most wordiest things you see in books are just exaggerating simple things, but it’s just a good writing technique too
@mint seal
What do you call those times you spend in job?
Career? Professional life?
Work hours
Both are correct as well.
Thank you
Guys what is the difference if i say
"We had it, but the person has already bought it today "
"We had it, but the person already bought it today "
Dm me Or @outer swift
But what is the difference?
So not much different if i just omit "has"
Id say not difference
No*
Thx a bunch
The first sentence uses "Present Perfect" which means the event (buying that item) has happened recently and we can see the result (Out of stock). On the other hand, the second sentence which uses "Past Simple" means the person did something (buying that item) before.
The first sentence puts more emphasis on the fact that the person bought the item recently. While the second sentence puts more emphasis on the fact that the item is no longer available,
Generally, We can consider them the same.

Hello everyone

Hello everyone, Good night. Can Anyone prepare a Translation question for me? En to En (En-En) I'm very bad at this
Could you explain more
For Example You write sth and in the options, there is a closest meaning in the option
is the right option
I have understood now. But I am not capable to do that 😄
@smoky steppe Present perfect tense is present tense actually. We talk about past events which still effects the present. So there must be a connection between the present.
I have closed the window (it is still closed)
I have been there before (now I know things about there)
Someone has took the shirt (I see that it’s no longer in the place where I saw it)
And past perfect is past version of it. Present perfect effects until the present and past perfect effects until a time reference which is in the past but after the event.
She had already closed the windows before she left (the windows were closed when she was leaving.) .
By the way all of the things I wrote may be wrong. I am not a native or C2 etc.
"we had it, but the person has already bought it today" makes more sense than the second sentence, if you where to say it normally it would be something like "we did have it but someone has already bought it"
Isn’t it weird to say the person? @humble rose
yeah
you wouldnt say that
Thank you the person
you would say "someone has already bought it" or something along those lines
with those two sentences it would make more sense to add the "has" but neither are perfect english
I was asleep again...
Can you answer now? 😄
your question has already been answered by a wonderful teacher
you could also call it a shift
I know that, I didn't mean to be rude.
I just wanted to know what people in Australia say to that.
But never mind 🙂
Hello guys
What exactly is the difference between (i would rather) and (i would prefer)?
When do we use each
I looked it up on google but got a bit confused
No you weren’t being rude, I was just saying there weren’t any other answers aside from what FalseBiscuit said. Though in Australia I believe we commonly say “shift”
Thank you
The meaning isn’t much of a difference but the sentence structure “I would rather” follows an infinitive without “to,” but “I prefer” needs “to” and an infinitive
So if someone asked me: what's the difference in meaning between the two
I can answer: they are the same?
Ok thanks
You can say the meaning is the same, not the structure
Got it
Thanks
What would you describe an ’oily’ voice? 🤔
Someone sly?
Someone who speaks in a smooth manner
Harry glanced sideways at Ron and Hermione.
Both of them had their eyes open too, ’reflecting’ the starry ceiling.
🤔 i assume it’s referring to their ’eyes’?
Send the whole paragraph please
Basically they are sleeping on the floor
The whole paragraph is too long and has nothing to do with the part i sent 😅
Ah I wasn’t braining. Yes, it’s referring to their eyes
@mint seal what does this mean?
" how big is your immediate family?"
Does it mean the family you born in it?
yes. An “immediate family” includes your closest relations to your family members. This includes your mother, father and your siblings
Thank you
no problem <33
Any questions?
“Do you know what she said?”
“yes,” he said with ’the air of one cradling a large bombshell in his arms’
🤔 hes acting like he has something big to say?
[air] here is like ‘atmosphere, feeling, expression….’?? 🤔
Yes
Wiktionary's definition 4
A bombshell metaphorically is something very shocking
Often you see it in "drop a bombshell", which is when someone reveals a shocking thing
‘Did she say who did it?’ said Dumbledore quietly.
‘Oh, yes, Professorhead,’ said Peeves, with the air of one cradling a large bombshell in his arms. ‘He got very angry when she wouldn’t let him in, you see.’ Peeves flipped over, and grinned at Dumbledore from between his own legs. ‘Nasty temper he’s got, that Sirius Black.’
Here in bold is the bombshell he was carrying, now dropped
You just searched the whole context? 😅
Have you read the book?
And thank you!
Did you…..
Yea it's always good to have context lol
I've not
How did you search
Googel 👍🏼
What is difference between recession and depression ? (Badly economy)
What's the difference between terror and horror?
recession is when the economy is going down, while depression is the state of the economy being bad, i would say
Terror makes you feel disgusted at something
Horror makes you feel feared
(That's the simplest i can come up with 😅)
In simple words,
Recession makes stuff costlier
Depression makes the business cycle slow
For in depth understanding read and watch some articles or documentaries I'd say
as for the emotions that people feel (as opposed to the other definitions of horror and terror) i would say somewhat the opposite of this. terror is similar to fear, and horror is more akin to disgust, perhaps a fearful disgust
terror - Intense dread, fright, or fear
horror - An intense distressing emotion of fear and repulsion.
Thank you for the knowledge.
He is ’over his head’ in an ocean.
🤔 his head is below the surface of the ocean?
hey! how often do use "come straight" in the meaning of "to be directly honest"?
I have a quick question. How do you say grass, class or even pass in an RP British accent? Are you supposed to say the a with as an ah or and uh?
with as an ah or and uh?
I don't know how I'm supposed to read this sorry
In RP, and in the southern standard British English that has replaced RP, the vowel in those words is the same as in "car" for example
Usually written /ɑ:/ but phonetically more like central [ä:]
Most of the clips here say it that way if you want to listen
(not all of them, because it's unique to southern England and there's a lot more of the UK than just that)
come straight means to be honest.
To ’fluff’ your pillow basically means to ‘shake’ it to make it more even, flat, smooth? 🤔
Essentially. It has less to do with making it a specific way and more of to get rid of all the ways your head makes it less comfortable (i.e. flattening it, making a head-shaped dent, etc.)

i thought it was to puff up the pillow
To ’tumble’ basically is just to ‘fall’ suddenly ? 🤔
she tripped and tumbled to the ground.
rocks tumbled from the cliff;
price/stock tumbling;
answers and responses are the same thing?
More like "rolling" and slamming
Meaning is the same but the use is different
You want an answer for a previous or current question
You give responses to a current question
Is really unnatural to say "respond me"
Hello, what's the difference and how can I use scarcity, paucity and dearth in a correct situation.
Sorry for asking many questions, but teach me the difference of pip and seed, convince and persuade.
Convince is to convince with facts persuade is to persuade by any means😀
Scarcity and paucity are pretty the same and dearth is more informal
Pip is a kind of seed that is hard while seed is a seed
As often as you want it is a figurative meaning
Over the years, Pooky(Garfields toy bear 🧸) has had several ’close calls’;
losing a leg, an arm, and an eye,but Garfield has always been by his side.
🤔 ‘call’?
Request, demand?
"Close call" is mostly idiomatic and is used to describe something that very nearly happened as an outcome. It's sort of derived from the definition of "call" which means "a judgement" in the sense that something almost received total judgement, or a judgement had saved it. We can only really guess what would have happened by using the context. In this case, Pooky was close to being completely destroyed, but managed to barely avoid that judgement by simply losing other parts.
that question piqued my interest as well.
how often do you use that phrasal verb? or is it rather rare?
i would personally be more likely to use come clean, which means the same thing
guys what kind of grammar for example this is "Who would have thought" i want to know to search difficult grammar sentences useful like this help me guys please
subjunctive combined with perfect i believe
guys help me how to find useful sentences, phrases or expressions with complex grammar like this "Who would've thought"

I heard from somewhere the phrase "izinit". Is this a kind of pronunciation of "isn't it"?
Yes, it's the way it's usually said
The 1st t is usually not said
You can go through many many clips here
Thank you, @boreal pewter
No prob 👍🏼
You can of course say the t, and there are clips there where you'll hear it, just not that many in comparison
People would say “innit” as well
British?
Yes british
I saw this in one youtube video 🙂
So crazy
Boa'o'woa
I am Russian, and I don't believe yet that American cannot sometimes understand British, cause I understand both xD
I think it depends on the person

What is a govlin, is it an insult to br called such?
Hello guys! Which option is correct?
Option A:
If we had decided to make a living at this planet some years ago, we would have so many problems now.
Option B:
If we decided to make a living at this planet some years ago, we have so many problems now.
I made these option myself, I just have an English task, and it looks like this:
If we (decide) to make a living at this planet some years ago, we (have) so many problems now.
But I'm not sure if these options are correct 😅
As far as I know, there are the following:
- If we had decided <something>, we would have had <something>.
- If we decided <something>, we would have <something>.
Thank you! Russian buddy
You are very welcome!
Good morning to everyone allowed the world

Hello good evening, with a question someone who works in a call center or can help me with this question
Why should I hire you?
What is customer service for you?
I want to prepare myself to apply to a call center :'))
Hi everyone,
What is difference between “passionate” and “enthusiastic” ?
hey everyone,
me and my friend are getting started learning English (we have some basics) and we want to start from scratch...
meaning we want to learn English from the very beginning cuz it seems our basics are not that good
can someone suggest for us a roadmap to start with ?
What's the context
I am hardworking and passionate
It's providing service to people
Study it in school setting
Passionate= inspired by it , enthusiastic= active
we are graduated
Hmm maybe buy an English book
Curriculum is important 😀
that's why i'm asking
which one
hi
If anyone wants to help me or practice English with me, they can add me as a friend.
blond is for male and blonde is for female
I never knew that lmao
I thought it was british vs american spelling
like gray vs grey type stuff
Nice, didn't know that
I think you don't have to push your standards that high, I mean, I can understand you perfectly
That shows your basic is not that basic! To me, basic English ia when the person can't hold a conversation at all without consulting somewhere
I am so sick, I ..... attend the lecture.
(can't - cannot - can not - couldn't)
Can not is usually written cannot and contracted to can't. Couldn't is could not and is used when talking about something that has already happened. If you were phoning your teacher before the lecture you would say "I am so sick, I can't attend the lecture." If you were talking to your teacher the following day it would be "I was so sick, I couldn't attend the lecture."
Completely true, but "cannot" is more formal then "can't"
I've a question pls !! Does " I ain't " mean " I am not " ?
native speakers will probably use either in this situation but couldn't changes the meaning slightly and doesnt work because you would need to say that you were sick
idk whats correct tho
first one is too informal and second one is the regular one
im not is the most regular ye
Ok ty
Ty ✨
Yes, but it can also mean "I haven't", e.g. "I ain't been there"
@exotic bramble
Can you help me with pronouncing "ing"?
I know it's not like "n" but Idk how to make it
Begin to make a k or g sound, but don't actually release it, just move your tongue to that place
The back of your tongue goes up and closes at the top of the back of your mouth right
Keep your tongue there
Now hum through your nose, like you do for n & m
Hi everyone
is there anyone who wants a speaking practice with me in english
because without practice impossible to speak better english
I could help you with that

do it the same way you do a n and an m but at the place in your throat where u say a k or g sound
oh this is a better explanation
Thank you
That helped me to make that sound 🥹
Okay
guys can any one help me?
Naguib Mahfouz was a pioneer in....... Arabic Literature.
A- no article
B-the
C-an
D-a
A - should just read "Naguib Mahfouz was a pioneer in Arabic Literature"
Is this really a noun "chemical" ? Because for me it's an adjective
It's both actually
When it refers to something that's related to chemistry or whatever the subject deals with, it's an adjective.
Do you have an example where it is used like a noun ?
All these colourful solutions are chemicals
For example
Even the water we drink is considered as a chemical (by chemistry)
same with the air we breath, it's a chemical compound, meaning its a couple chemicals combined into one
I see it like an adjective, because the nouns are "solutions" right ?
"chemical solutions" or "chemical compounds" yes. It's often shortened to just "chemicals" for ease
Maybe it's something I won't never understand, because I'm not able to see it like a noun, for me it's always an adjective
The nouns could be called chemicals as well as chemistry has a very simple definition for 'chemicals'
think of the cleaning solutions you have for your home, those would be considered chemicals. They'd be chemicals you want to keep away from children.
like bleach
It was stupid to ask, cause it doesn't really matter
no it's an interesting concept
If you say so
no such thing as a stupid question
A
Yeah its a noun. "I have some chemicals in my garage" "Make sure you keep those chemicals away from children!"
But its also an adjective. "Im studying chemical reactions" "What chemical compound is that?"
What does “best pitch” generally means?
guys, what I need to learn about english for can speak with a native guy?
Here are a few example sentences that include the phrase "best pitch":
- After months of preparation and practice, I finally delivered my best pitch to the investors and secured the funding we needed to launch our startup.
- The sales team worked hard to develop the best pitch for our new product, and it paid off with a record-breaking quarter.
- As a nonprofit organization, we rely on our volunteers to help us spread the word about our mission. Our best pitch is one that inspires people to get involved and make a difference in their community.
- In the highly competitive world of tech startups, having the best pitch can make all the difference in securing funding and building partnerships.
- When preparing your best pitch, it's important to focus on the key benefits of your product or service, and tailor your message to the specific needs and interests of your audience.
whats the context? "pitch" itself has several different meanings
Can we replace with highlights or other things?
Prior knowledge
There are no ..... in English.
(synonyms - antonyms - homophones - all the previous answers)
@flat rune
Try to think of an example of each.
What do you mean?
"up" can have lots of meanings,
"A new project came up today"
"I gave up on the garden for today"
"I went up a hill today"
Do you have a particular meaning you want to convey?
No worries 😄
The bell has rang or the bell has rung?
rung
Why?
We WERE GOING to eat at a restaurant but it was too full
can someone explain why we used 'Were going' instead of 'went' or 'have gone'
Right now I'm reading a book named Magic tree house 25 Stage fright on a Fairy Night and during the story, Shakespear says He has lost two fairies, and invites Jack and Annie, who is the main character for the substitution for the actor. He said he asked them out because they were good at reading, and I first thought he wanted to play them as a chairman, but is fairy some kind of role in the play? The play is called The Winter's Tale.
In this case, "were going" is in future tense. Both "went" or "have gone" would not make sense since both phrases are in past tense. If you were to replace "went" or "have gone" then this would change the context completely and your sentence would not make sense, having said that they went to the restaurant and it was full. How was even possible to even grab a seat in the first place?
For "were going," if you think about it, it's another way of saying "planning to go." Their intention was to go to the restaurant in the future but they couldn't because it was too full. Context wise, it makes sense.
This question is unclear. You may need to provide an extract from the text you're reading or explain it in more detail.
It was created to give lego fans the best experience ever. It was [ 12.2] .... September 2017
12.2
A in
B on
C at
which one do you think is correct?
b. on
Wrong, it's actually A
np
Just to explain quickly. On would be correct if it was "on" a specific day. "In" refers to the month in which the event took place.
Hi. Can anyone here teach me in VC how to write an argumentative essay?
Not the whole thing, just how to write the structure, claim, counterclaim and etc.
Please mention me if you are willing to help.
Ya sure
Sure! Here's a short explanation of how to write the structure, claim, counterclaim, and other key elements of an argumentative essay:
-
Structure:
- Introduction: Introduce the topic and present a clear thesis statement.
- Body paragraphs: Each paragraph focuses on a specific supporting point or piece of evidence.
- Counterclaim: Address opposing viewpoints or arguments.
- Rebuttal: Refute the counterclaim and reinforce your own position.
- Conclusion: Summarize your main points and restate your thesis.
-
Claim:
- Your claim is your main argument or position on the topic.
- It should be clear, specific, and debatable.
- Your claim should be supported by evidence and reasoning throughout the essay.
-
Counterclaim:
- The counterclaim acknowledges an opposing viewpoint.
- Present the counterclaim objectively and accurately.
- Refute the counterclaim by providing evidence or reasoning that supports your claim.
-
Supporting evidence:
- Use facts, examples, statistics, expert opinions, or research to support your claim.
- Make sure the evidence is reliable and relevant to your argument.
- Explain how the evidence strengthens your position and counters opposing arguments.
-
Structure of body paragraphs:
- Start each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence that relates to your main claim.
- Provide evidence to support the topic sentence.
- Analyze or explain the evidence and its relevance to your claim.
- Connect each paragraph back to your thesis statement.
Remember, these are just the key elements.
How many paragraphs should I write for an argumentative essay, and what should I put in each one?
It is common to have like 5 Paragraph Structure
My teacher said 4..
Ya u can 4 aswell
What do I write in each paragraph? My teacher is confusing me alot. A short explanation please.
Here's a breakdown of what each paragraph should contain:
-
Introduction:
- Hook: Grab the reader's attention with an engaging opening sentence or anecdote.
- Background information: Provide context and background related to the topic.
- Thesis statement: Present your main claim or argument that you will support throughout the essay.
-
Body paragraph 1:
-
Body paragraph 2:
-
Body paragraph 3:
-
Counterclaim and rebuttal paragraph:
-
Conclusion
So just to clarify, if I want to write a 4 paragraphs argumentative essay, I will have to put the counter claim and refutation in B1 and B2?
@timber folio can you help with this, Sir?
I want to improve in grammar. So oftentimes I will write a complete thought. The problem I have is more about structuring those ideas. What are multiple ways I can improve in creating sentences?
Bro when you made a lot of building sentences, indeed your English will be very better then now
Dude, was it what I said? I’m looking for a genuine answer maybe a book or topic on the subject.
your sentence writing seems almost good enough that just reading books or articles would be good. this is a process even native english speakers go through (everybody has to improve writing in school, writing essays)
i mean, the sentences seem a bit awkward in a few ways, and im not sure if i can express them for you
a common thing people do when they start learning to write in school is not connect their writing very well. there are so many ways you can connect sentence, like using and, or, since, so, etc. even purposely not connecting two sentences and leaving them as simple blocky statements can have an interesting effect in writing, could be used in poetry and stuff
i mean i think what you said here sounds awkward, even without considering connecting sentences together. i can rewrite it perhaps:
I want to improve in grammar. Oftentimes I'll write a complete thought, but then I'm not able to structure the ideas in the writing very well. What are some ways I can improve in writing sentences?
i connected the two middle sentences, and also changed the phrasing to make them sound better together, grammatically and logically
i think i would also be more likely to say 'i want to improve at grammar'
hey, just wondering the difference between “who” and “whom”, could anyone explain to me and give examples, please?
who is a subject, whilst whom is the object form of who
Damn i never knew that i just thought whom was like formal lol
Cuz i always use who
Guess im wrong
tbh its confusing, even for me
Can you help me, I don't understand when to say [ðə] and [ðɪ] in word the?
your question is unclear, also most people do not read phonetics
Just think about it! If we had not changed our degree course to music, we would not be singing professionally now.
can someone explan why we used 'would not be singing'
When the next word begins with a vowel sound or you want to emphasize, pronounce it [ðɪ].
But when the next word begins without a vowel sound, then pronounce it [ðə].
It's mixed conditionals
Wouldn't be singing shows a continuous situation.
The sentence means: Now they are professional singers and that is because they have changed their degree course to music.
tyy
Hi guys.
Are these sentences correct?. 1. "I am visiting my parents tomorrow". 2. "I will visit my parents tomorrow". <--- Are the both correct?
first one is progressive form and second is future
So can I use whatever I want?
depends on how are you going to use them in the sentence
The context is answering to a person about my plans of tomorrow. So, can I use the both in this case?
You can use the both
yes
Okay, thank you 🙂
Thanks
I beg your pardon. I am on a pursuit to learn English, and I am hoping that I will find a suitable program to do so. Can any of you gentlemen teach me more about the linguistic elements of the English language? Sorry for my bad English. I just started learning today.
tip: native means that you were born in an english speaking environment
The easy way I remember when to use each version is whether I would answer the question with he/she or him/her. eg When we were discussing food who wanted noodles? **He **wanted noodles. OR When you were looking for ideas, whom did you ask? I asked her But to be honest, we're usually lazy and just use who all the time, unless we're being formal or writing it down.
His ignorance of these facts came through at the interview, this is useful?
What is independent clause?
A clause that can also be it’s own sentence, they’re commonly connected to other clauses with semicolons ; or a comma , followed by a coordinating conjunction
Hi, can you send me links of graded readers(free please)? My level between a1 and a2.
👆👆👆👆
hello
if you had started learning English, you should have the Beginners role. A native role is for those that started English as their mother tongue OR has lived and been surrounded by an English-speaking area.
second of all, there are many oppurtunities to learn English here. Check pinned messages for a guide I made
can anyone help me? for my assigment. it says " What is the difference between the use of "will" and the use of "to be going to"? and Give some examples of the use of "will" and "to be going to"."
Do you have the entire extract(a photo or a text)of your assignment? Please provide it
unfortunately it is not from a paper but kinda from e-learning
and also i dont know how to share photos in here
send it to me in dms
okayyyyy
"will" means long future, but "to be going to do" means earlier future
ex: I will become a Doctor in the future.
I am going to sleep after 5 min.
thank youuu
who: I am learning English from xxx who is the best in Discord English Server.
pardon? which discord server is it?
whom: I am learning English from xxx whom Discord English Server is recommending. ("whom" can be removed)
I have just sent sample sentence.
that's ok. if you have any problem, feel free to ask...
I have 5 cats in my house or at my house? What are the differences?
in is referring to inside your house, whereas at is near your house.
Thanks
no worries!
"do you possibly know?"
"is there a chance you know?"
is that a natural thing to say? or do you know something close to that that is natural?
How to say "Do you know?" it in more polite/sophisticated way?
Neither of the examples you provided are natural. If I were to say “do you know” in a polite manner, I would say “Are you aware?”
I think, "Is there a chance you might know?" would work, or, "Would you happen to know?"
these are better examples. They’re more natural
hm
But isn't "aware" suggesting to be cautious of something?
not always
it doesn’t always mean “cautious”
You can say something like “I’m aware of the situation” which is just another way of saying “I know the situation” or “i know there’s an ongoing situation”
"Know" typically refers to having information or knowledge about a particular subject, while "aware" usually means having a recognition or understanding of something.
in house is correct. or you can use at home
Which is the correct spelling:
Witch-hunt
Or
Witch hunt?
The second one
What's the difference between voracious and ravenous?
Hi, what exactly means "Might as well"?
It means someone is going to do something but not necessarily want to, if they don't then it will happen anyway
thank you!
No problem
that is correct
on the terrace or in the terrace?
what about at the terrace?
Hi every one
That doesnt make much sense either,
Its typically "On the terrace"
For terrace it would be "on". In English, some words use "in", some use "at" and some use "on". "In" is used when you are physically inside something like " I am in the house". "On" is used when you are physically on the object, like "The chicken is on the table". "At" is used when describing somebody's location, like "He is at the concert". It's very confusing and if you get it wrong sometimes then it's okay. The main thing to be worried about is communication, but it's good to practice things like this, too.
[on a train, raining, they sit near the window]
“Ron, wiping a ’patch clean’ on the window and peering out.”
🤔 like a mop?
Can you send the whole paragraph?
Oh, someone answered for me in another server 😅
**Thank you, Kiu!

Hi guys, what are you talking about?
I asked a question, thats all 🥰
hi
Oh okay ty 🙃
Could someone give me feedback on this sentence? Does it make sense? I'm trying to use it as a summary on my social media.
I'm but a quiet man, however in my silence there is such vast affection toward the life I owed and with it I try to express which such awe & grandure
what is the difference between manipulating and gaslighting
Whereas manipulation targets the conscience, gaslighting targets consciousness. The term comes from the Alfred Hitchcock movie “Gaslight” (1944) about a husband with a secret who slowly drives his wife insane. Gaslighters claim to know a person better than they know themselves.
I found it on google. hope it would help u. I also didn't know.
It's grammatically correct, and very poetic and well written, but keep in mind that most people probably aren't going to know what you're talking about if this is for a social media profile summary.
Nicely written
what's the difference between obey and submit?
I have never heard obey and submit r synonyms to each other
They are very similar, but "submit" in that context implies that they were forced to obey.
I have another question
"Could you possibly send me a video..."
Is it correct? Is it natural?
Yes, but such wording implies that you think it's unlikely they will be able to send you the video. Something more direct would be "Could you please send me a video?"
hello guys. What does "you can only do so much" mean?
It’s correct but I’d rephrase it to something like “is it possible to send me a video” because “possibly” in your sentence seems unnecessary
It means that the person had did what they could before the time limit finsihed.
It means that there is a limit to how much the person can do.
What does it call in english u don't swallow it yet but it is still in your mouth what vocabs is used?
Chew?
No i mean i drink water i didn't swallow it yet. It is still in my mouth i am .... it.
I still have water in my mouth. I am .... what vocab should i use.
Can you be more specific?
I still have water in my mouth. I haven't swallow it yet nor spit it out. I just keep that water inside my mouth. So i am keeping that water inside my mouth.
I can't find any specific vocab for that action
I can‘t think of a specific word for that
Is there a specific word for that in your Native language?
Yeah
What’s the word?
Have you tried translating it?
Okay, well there isn‘t a specific word for that in English I don’t think
Thanks anyway
Is it grammatically correct to say:
"What was I just writing?" or "What was I writing a moment ago?"
In my opinion, may be "with full mouth"
Not sure if its correct but "what was i saying" is more common i think or maybe "what was i typing" if its online
and "what was i writing about" if you're writing something
And also "what was i talking about"
Oh okay, nice
So I can add any "verb of action" after the I, right?
Eg.
Cooking
Seeing
Teaching
Oh okay thanks
Yes
But for some you need to add about
Idk why tho
It just sounds wrong for some when you dont use about
Oh okay I get.
But is there any difference between, "What am I talking about" and "What was I talking about"?
"What was i cooking" is something you will hear "what was i seeing" i dont think i have ever seen used much before, and "what was i watching/looking at" is much more common, "what was i teaching" doesnt really sound right as teachers normally remember what they were teaching, but regardless "what was i teaching you" sounds better here
"What was i talking about" means that the speaker cant remember what they were talking about in the past, and "what am i talking about" is used when the speaker thinks that what they are currently talking about is ridiculous or they somehow dont know what they are currently talking about
Now I understand.
Thank you so much for helping me out, I really appreciate.
No problem
@mystic nymph
I need your help with something maybe a bit complicated to ask.
There is this german rime:
Piep, piep, piep,
wir ham uns alle lieb.
Jeder isst dass was er kann,
nur nicht seinen Nebenmann.
Hat er ihn dann doch gegessen,
Zähneputzen nicht vergessen!
Piep, piep, piep,
guten Appetit!
Are there English versions of it? Its a rime to say before you eat.
I found this self written rime from a daycare educator.
Chirping sparrow, buzzing bee!
Shut your mouths and quiet be!
Stop your babble, leave your toys
Happily your meal enjoy!
Are there more or some popular phrases to say with kids before the big feeding starts? 😁
Could you help me answering this question

Hello guys!
Not a long time ago i've decided to apply for one grant program, in there i should write a number of little number of essays. This is my first big text in english, so i am feeling not really sure about their correctness. Maybe i can find here somebody, who can review them, and maybe indicate, things i need to fix or correct?
1.Will you be able to explain?
2.Will you able to explain?
Which one is accurate? And what does it mean to add "be" in questions?
Only the 1st
"able" is an adjective
You can't say "I able to explain"
Just like you can't say "I tall"
You need be or it's just not grammatical
And you send that text to chatgpt etc and let it solve that. I would try it for you, but tbh. I don't understand how the task of your homework works correctly.
Also... Is this not the best way to improve your English by solving such simple homework?
I just don't understand how to build the sentence, but in general does it look easy 🙂
Sure, let me help you complete those sentences using the guiding words "if", "there", "one thing", "not like", "people", "tell lies":
- If it is unlikely that he will be convicted of the offence, it does not mean he did not commit the crime.
- If there is one thing I've learned, it's that people often tell lies to cover up their true feelings. I wish people were more honest with their emotions.
- If the next patient arrives, would they please let me know?
- If there is a good explanation for all the recent absenteeism, I'm all ears.
- If one wishes to be successful in business, they must work hard. No success comes without effort.

I can't tell you if it is perfect correct. But I could ask other bots too.
Every time I hear the word “body” I hear the letter R
welp
I don’t hear it. Where exactly do you hear it in “body?”
Hey how do i make this sentence grammatically correct: "Didn't you used to work there?" it sounds wrong but idk how to convey the same meaning lol
Weren't you used to work here ?
Also sounds wrong
because you already have a past tense term in the sentence
Ooh ty

For some reason

So, when we talk about any software for editing purpose, we use "in", right?
But what if we talk about a software for messaging (like Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, etc)? Which of the following sentences is correct:
- We communicate in Slack. / We chat in Discord.
- We communicate on Slack. / We chat on Discord.
- We communicate at Slack. / We chat at Discord.
I've read that when we talk about any website or web-platform we should use the preposition "on":* "I found this article on the website". * But it's not clear enough for me regarding the applications. I would be very grateful for your help in this matter!
It's another messaging app yea "on" applies to all of these
"over", "through", and "via" also work (though more for the communicate example than the chat one)
While in American English "did used to" is considered an error, such usage appears to have won some measure of acceptance in British English
@spare summit @boreal pewter Thank you!
oh ok
For a school assigment I need to interview an english speaking person, doesn't matter wherefrom. I will ask some basic questions to have a small conversation with you. Feel free to dm me
Intervocalic "D" may be pronounced as a more subtle or soft "D" sound. This is similar to the tapped "R" sound.
Examples: ladder, body, buddy, daddy..etc.
the word postpone means that smth will take place at a time later than that first scheduled. so what would be the word for smth that's just take place earlier than the time first scheduled? (if I make sense)
@digital sandal
Yes!
More or less.
If you postpone something, it means you schedule it for a later date. In an idiomatic sense, you're taking a rain check!
What is the difference between important and significant ?
they are really similar words and i might be wrong but "significant" sort of means that something had an impact on something, while "important" is just a broad term to describe something of importance, if that makes any sense lol
Hi guys
If we are talking about a famous bridge
Is it correct to say "how has it been designed" ?
Isnt it better to say "how was it designed"?
When you say "How was it designed?" you are referring to the past and this suggests that the design is already completed. So, when discussing a famous bridge, it's more common to use the past tense and ask: "How was it designed?"
On the other hand, "How has it been designed?" ("has it been" is in the present perfect tense in English) you are inquiring about the ongoing process of design or the design choices and modifications made over time.
hi people, i've a question very dumb xd
when I use "gonna" i always use verb to be, but sometimes i see someone dont using it, must i use it every time that i say "gonna" ?
Oh... So if this bridge was built and done years ago
But i want to talk about the process of its building... Like what materials were used and such stuff
Its better to ask in present perfect because im talking about the process itself right?
Did i get that right
No.. If the design of something was completed in the past, it is more appropriate to use the past tense when asking about it. In this case, saying "How was it designed?" is grammatically correct and accurately reflects the completed nature of the design process that occurred years ago.
If the design has just been finished or is very recent, it is appropriate to use the present perfect tense: "How has it been designed?"
I see
Thank you for your help sir
You're welcome!
What do you mean exactly? Do you mean that you normally only ever say "I'm gonna be..." and other people use other verbs like "I'm gonna go"?
Could someone please clarify the usage of 'had had' in English? I am a bit confused about when and how to use it correctly.
I can show you a video of a woman teaching how to pronounce the word Body. The thing is that I put the video at x0.25 and even like that I heard the letter R instead of the letter D.
Thanks. I’m going to make a research about it.
That’s interesting
Or maybe the sound for soft D and R are so similar that I get confused
It’s the past perfect form of “have.” Used when an event has happened in the past, initially with another event happening as well. It’s a bit confusing to explain, but here is an example.
A - “Hey, do you have book 4 of the Twisted love series?”
B - “We had had them, but they’re no longer in stock”
Maybe, but I still can’t exactly hear or visualise it lol
I need to make a research about it
English is interesting
It may also be that, everyone hears everything differently as well
Yeh
Well, i’m a spanish speaker
english can be easy, except the pronunciation
that’s hard, i guess
I’m sure you’re doing well in it :))
thanks ;))
Funny thing, I actually have trouble saying the word “English” sometimes
that’s funny for a native speaker
I have a lot of trouble with “sh” sounds because it sounds like a tongue twister if I repeat it
So often when I say “English” it just sounds like “Englishhhh”
I have problem pronouncing a LETTER
Haha, I can relate
The letter Z
Do you say “zed” or “zee”
I sound native according to others but I don’t say native, according to myself
Is that a question? Then no
Maybe because my accent is Australian mixed with American or something
It’s a question
The thing is that every time I try to pronounce, it sounds like C
I see. I never heard the Australian accent
interesting
I have a friend with a clear and distinct Aussie accent. It’s this person: @flat rune
You need to emphasise the “z” sound to make it more distinct
I see
I try but idk
i took classes for speech impediments for this exact problem back in middle school
the trick is to shift from the back of your mouth where the gumbs and molars are to the front where the buck teeth are
i find you also have to arch your tougue downwards and create a cavity where the air seems to tumble in the front of your mouth
G'day g'day
Maybe when I get home I can show you
sounds nice
I'll be home and free in about 2 hours
Nice, im gonna be sleeping at that time
i see i see
Are you struggling to make a "z" sound but you can do an "s" sound
The z is made by doing exactly the same thing as the "s" but you need to voice it
Hi. Tapped 'R' sound in words like 'BODY' is more typical for American English, while British English tends to pronounce this sound differently. Yes, you can check on YouTube for examples of how to pronounce 'BODY' in both American and British accents.
I suppose the "can" should become "could" ssince its reported speech but I ain't sure
Hello, someone can explain me: when "quite" is translated to rather / absolutely
Well I'm quite unsure about this one
yes but its probably better to put "only" before "got" "first, i've only got 10 minutes to grab everything i can"
hello, a question pls help! Do I say 'pursuit for' or 'pursuit of' (eg. persuit __ knowledge)
Hi. The correct phrase is "pursuit of." Examples: "He is in pursuit of happiness." "It threatens free pursuit of historical inquiry."
He will eat
He is going to eat it
The time itself is unknown, which one should I use then? I think the first one is correct but I wanted to ask
He may eat it in in 10 minutes or 1 day. We dont know
Why you sorry vs why are you sorry. Which one is correct, and why?
"why are you sorry" because you need to use the verb "to be" as you have to "be" sorry
Thank you for the helpful explanation. 😊🙏🏼
what would be the most used words/adjectives currently to refer to girlfriend?
In my view, 'Sweetheart' is the most common word for 'girlfriend'.
I wanted to know some more
Loved one, baby, honey - are also commonly used. But the term "girlfriend" or personal nicknames are generally more prevalent. It's important to note that the usage of words for "girlfriend" can vary depending on the specific social context.
i had seen "Bae", it's correct?
"Bae" is American slang term and it comes from a phrase "before anyone else". Yes, it is used to refer a romantic partner, such as a girlfriend or boyfriend. But keep in mind, it may be not appropriate or preferable for everyone.
Damn i never realised it was an acronym
Here are some more slang words for 'girlfriend' and 'boyfriend' (I personally like the playful irony of "better half", I would certainly use it sometimes to express the importance of the partner in my life) 😊
At first I thought it was a slang of “baby” word, nice info btw👍
hi bird
wth
it's like saying 'my honeyboo supp'
Never seen anyone call someone ‘loved one’ unironically
If someone called me that I’d be like huh
omg you’re back
is it correct to say " you cause my nights to grow vaster" ?plz tell me someone
more..
is is correct to say " always cure my wounds with love's plaster"
the context is weird here, what is it?
I’d replace “cure” with “heal” but it’s gramatically correct
im writing a poen i need rhymes
are both sentences correct
ya they are
what does love's plaster mean
in this context, they want their wounds to be healed by love
can nights grow vaster gramatically
thanks i understand now
gramatically it makes sense but not context wise
can i say this sentence in my poem
I suggest you to change it into something else. Vast means larger quantity. In this case, it doesn’t make sense that the night is “large” because of the other person
Hi, any suggest for improve vocabularies?
Thanks, you're right, it's not commonly used to say to your partner "my loved one". This can sound somewhat formal or distant. The phrase "loved one", "loved ones" is used in the third person to refer to beloved person or family member(s).
does anyone have tips on writing a speech?
exactly 👍
Yes hello :))
yeah lol for me it makes me think of commercials that are like “if you or a loved one are experiencing blah blah blah then call blah blah blah today”
books might help! or shows, and writing down the new words you hear to study later
I like to listening audio drama, if I don't know some word in the history im write and discovery your meaning later
Calling someone a "bird" can be seen as rude, depending on who you're talking to. Just so everyone knows
Good to know that, thank you.
British English question here. Now that Britain has a king instead of a queen, the English language is now the King's English instead of the Queen's English, right? So other than the change in title, are there any other changes? Like to the vocabulary or grammar etc?
People still tend to say speaking the Queen's English, but officially yes you would say the King's English (people would know what you are referring to as Queen Elizabeth's reigh was over 70 years so it has changed the way people refer to things).
In other areas things change, examples being the way we refer to prisons (as an exampl) "Throughout the UK and in some Commonwealth countries, Her Majesty’s Prisons are now His Majesty’s Prisons – although the familiar HMP initials remain the same. Likewise His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service, and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons."
In slang there are also some changes, for example you say when someone is in prison they are "at her majesty's please (HMP), but this would now be "at his majesty's pleasure".
Yeah, I want the American English one
thx
what technique does the follwoing quote show and imply? “What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.”

His stare is insolent...meaning staring in a way that is looking down on (basically being rude). In this case Malfoy is showing disgust at Professor Lupin's worn out clothes and old suitcase.

🤔 ’prissy speed’?
For me I interpret "prissy speed" as a person moving quickly in quite a stiff and rigid manner.
It seems ..... If no body comes we move on to the meeting
1: like
2: as
3: though
which one of the following do you think is correct?

Cancer question
honestly i have no idea
i would have gotten that wrong
as if is the most common pair that encompasses if
but here it doesnt sound very natural
its definitely not though
"it seems like if nobody comes then we will have to move on to the meeting" probably sounds most natural
What does “Yerky” mean?
I have seen this statement a lot
Its an illegal drug, and is also a place in Ukraine,
is it in use here?
hello, dont know if you still need help, but for a speech, depending on your level, there are different ways you could write it.
No idea,
What are the differences between deity and angel???
what is the difference between used to, to be + used to and get used to
i can't understand this
They are quite different. Deities are typically significant, all-powerful central figures in polytheistic belief systems (such as Hinduism and Buddhism). While angels are commonly found in monotheistic religions like Christianity and Judaism, and are generally seen as subordinate to a higher power. They carry out divine tasks and act as intermediaries between humans and the divine realm.
I argued with a friend
can i say that i wanna "clear things out"?
you know what i mean, what would be natural ways of saying that?
i would not said this after argue because you'll talk about it and argue again. After and argue with my friend we're just talking like nothings happend.
but if you want to say it i think its good
‘Clear things up’ is the phrase you want I believe :))
And yes, that would sound natural in this context
I’m not sure what you mean by this sentence. Could you elaborate?
im making rap song and in that vers i want to say to wack mc's that i'll show them what technique is
Oh well I’m not well versed in rap haha but yes that works in that context I’d say.
in other language so i dont know exacly is it okay. I need use these words or words that ryms to them cause every word rhymes
good, thank you
I mean it isn’t grammatically correct but in the context of a rap song I hardly think that matters haha
aight
Why everyone is so mad when someone uses nword?
Seriously, it is abstract concept for me. I live in Poland and i used this word with my friends as a synonym for "bro" since I was 10 years old
I dont know any forbidden word in polish language, and dont get this concept that you cannot say something
It is a word that has its history deeply rooted in hate. So when you use this word it implies that you also hate a certain group of people.
Thats bad because i dont feel it in that way
so using f word (gay) also implies hate?
Yep
lol
Some gay people use it that way with others
But you really have to make sure whoever you're using it with is fine with you using it like that first
Bc its primary has been and still is as a slur against gay people so it's not a great word to just, assume you can use
Yeah sure, slur is a slur
But i wouldnt say only gay people should be allowed to say F word
I try to normalize it and make fun of it
I even call myself F word sometimes, just to normalize it
especially when i smell homophobic person i wanna provoke him by pretending to be gay
in my school we have group of friends that pretends to be gay and group of friends (im in that group) that pretends racist, homophobic and other phobics things and i think its beautiful.
If you say that black people are the same as white people so why they can use the nword and white cant or we cant make fun of them because they black? Im not taking about bullying, just normal jokes with them like go eat banana and then they say you have small dick.
same with gays
i know very well you’re talking about your own experiences but please keep this PG-13.
But otherwise yeah stuff like that is pretty bad n all(my skl got this kind of drama)
Xd why are you saying that im 13? Because i like dark humor? Why its bad? Im not hurting anyone and i dont care about historicial stuff.
I’m just saying to be careful bc the server is strictly SFW
That’s all
No no no, that’s not what I’m saying 😓
What is the difference between child-rearing and childcare?
child-rearing is long term. Looking after a child from a baby to teenage years, for example. Childcare is short term, looking after it for a few hours, etc.
Dont worry, hopefully you'll grow out of stuff like this 😄
How to use "have been", "had been" and also "been"?
Hi @sullen wolf
Which is better:
- The verbal dispute
- The verbal argument?
Both are good but I think number 1 sounds better
As a result of the traumas he has suffered through the years, he has become oversensitive.
Is this sentence correct? ^^
Yeah the sentence is correct
Thank you ❤️
Arguments are always verbal, disputes can be used for clash of sets of ideas as well.
Quarrels are also verbal, but it's implied so I've never seen it written as the verbal quarrel . Same with argument, it's already implied that it's verbal so you don't need to add verbal before it.
The verbal Dispute is correct imo
Thanks in advance
Done?
whats different between theyre and their and there
they’re is a contraction of “they are”
“they’re sad” means the same as “they are sad”
their is a possessive adjective. “These are their books. The books belong to them.”
there is a physical place, like “I am here, you are there”
or
“I’m at the park, are you here?” “Not yet, I’ll be there in five minutes.”
what’s the difference between either and neither?
He rushed into HIS room... DOWN THE STAIRS and into THE STREET..
Either for any of these two
Neither for none of these two
Either this or that
Neither this nor that
Hello, everyone. I have a question: is there any difference between "get sth ready" and "make sth ready"? Some folks said there's no difference and another ones said that there's a tiny difference, so I got a little bit confused. Is there any problem to use any of those phrasal verbs in whatever context? Thank you in advance, you guys are the best 😎 👍
Yet there's a tiny difference both mean the same and you can use it in the context but most of the advanced speakers prefer "get it ready"....
Hey guys i'm reading a book in english but I can't quite uderstand an expression "to drop the hammer" I think it's a way of saying but I don't understand what you mean
The full sentence is "A slower first marathon may have left me with enough energy to drop the hammer once we were back in the lava fields on the Iroman course"
umm do one's level best, to go all out in the Ironman course
Oh I thought it was like something related to the energy release for the phase of the lava fields
yes there is a slight difference.
'Make something ready'- you were directly involved in the process(maybe you gave a push/force)
get something ready- might not be directly involved but do have a hand in the process.
I made him ready(unnatural)- I got him into his dress myself, something a parent does for their child.
I got him ready- I gave him the dress~~ and a death stare~~ and he wore the dress while groaning parent does when son is no longer a child.
Drop the hammer means try very hard to prove something.

Yes, you can certainly hear that sound. In some regional English dialects, they use 'th-fronting,' which is when you hear the 'f' sound instead of 'th'.
Is it like an idiom?

Good afternoon people! There is one thing that i never really understand, how to use correctly the words “in” and “on”
"In" is used for: Months / seasons. Ex:. in September / in spring. Time of day. Eg: in the afternoon. Year. ...
"On" is used for: Days of the week. Ex:. on Wednesday.

hello everyone I need some help to correct 2 sentences if it's necessary (based on the word/idiom of the day)
- I heard my husband and my mother having a discussion and i was listening carefuly like a fly on the wall
- I am learning a work process, I believe I understood, but the explanation bemused me.
I feel like "listening carefully" is a bit redundant in the sentence as the idiom itself gives the meaning, could be removed
The other one looks fine
okay thks youuu for helping me !
What does shoot mean in slang
Can you use it in a sentence?
Damn that's racist
Give another example
It's another word for "darn".
Example: Shoot! I lost my card.
I believe it's the more polite version of the word "sh*t"
Used to express great excitement, surprise or exclamation
Thanks
Tyy
🙏 i think i got my answer

Would you provide any context?

New research suggests that someone who helps a total stranger is viewed as .........

options:A)morally B)involuntarily C)Locally D)ridiculously E)mortally
morally
Does the contraction "lifen't" and/or "happyn't" are really used?
And if so, by whom and in what kind of context?
Hello guys
Can anyone the definition of ( run your own business ) and ( self employed)
Thanks in advance
What is the meaning of "fly on the wall "? I google it, but i dont get it
It means that you’re able to watch people without being noticed
they’re very rare, you wouldn’t really see these words often
Run a business - Be in charge of a business
Self-employed - Someone who works and earns money independently on their own(different to working for a company)
Thank you
just tell me here
Hi guyss, does someone know the meaning of the word crowded?
Crowded means that there are a lot of people in one space
To the point where you don’t even have enough space for yourself
Ooh, thanksss👍😃
Hello, I have a... question and I'm surprised, that I never had thought about the word.
I know hard money is called coins, but what about the paper?
💸 this one.
Google recommend me "bill" but also "notes" or 💵 banknote.
In German we say "Schein" we could make it longer if the context isn't clear and add Money(Geld) in front of it and then its "Geldschein(e)" (plural).
So what about the English words? Singular and plural?
If singular I’d call it a dollar bill or note, but if it’s plural I call it cash
Does cash not simply mean money in general? Like "I will pay cash" = not with a card/online.
yeah but usually cash would be in bills n all, at least thats how i use the word
ah, its used for coins also but i barely use it in that context lmao
cash is always with 'notes' and coins
that's why of the various payment options, cash is a separate one
heyyy Kiu!! Where's my biscuit?
😌
I have a biscuit just now hehe
Hi guys, can you help me find a word?
