it repeated my sentences but changed them to make sound unnatural, and I'm not a native speaker that's true
No
the suggested sentences are very slightly more natural.
"Can you tell" is more natural sounding than "can you determine"
Very slightly
read the third one
I am talking about the third one
I see what you mean though
The AI is incorrectly quoting you.
I used determine in the second one
yes, why does it do it?
it's just a machine that generates texts
AIs do what they are programmed to do.
Humans program them.
Humans make mistakes.
Therefore AIs make mistakes.
For more on AI chat programs please read the articles I posted in #1029075039741562880
what should I read there? there's a large mass of chats
Anyone that could give me some explanation when to use then or than? Im struggling with them a lot
does anybody have good anki cards for improving vocabulary, I am not talking about basics but sometimes I find out my speech very modest and can't find enough words to express my minds
"Than" is used with a comparative adjective; "Then" is an adverb
Thencould be both adverb and adjective. Then as an adverb is used in order to refer to a particular time in the past or future. Then as an adjective is used ( only before noun) to describe somebody who had a particular title, job, etc. at the time in the past that is being discussed
While the latter isn't really common the former is
Simply put, you use than to compare between things and then is used as an indicator of time
Can you please tell me when to use "to" before an English verb?
hi guys I have a question
From a legal point of view, college students should be given the right to choose an early marriage when they have found their beloved partners.
In this sentence does it have to be partners or it's okay to use "partner"?
Use “partners”
because you used plural for college students, therefore “partner” should also be in plural form for it to make sense
“partner” is not entirely wrong but could be misinterpreted bc it means that several students share the same partner(though most cases people wouldn’t think that way bc they would know whatchu mean)
I see, so if I use singular here it would suggest multiple people owning one partner right?
well, it could mean that
i didn’t phrase it properly
actually no fuck that, ignore what i said with the meaning of using “partner”
its better to use plural for “partners” if theres plural for “college students”
if it were “a college student” then you use “partner”
@cursive patrol sorry for the confusion, its 11pm and I’m tired
I can't post a screenshot but I read Quirk's A Contemporary Grammar of the English Language and the part on distributive number confused me
I see
You’ll need to get a streamer role to post photos
Basically it says this:
The distributive plural is used in a plural noun phrase to refer to a set of entities matched individually with individual entities in another set:
Have you all brought your cameras? [Each has a camera.]
Hand in your papers next Monday. [Each has to hand in one paper.]
While the distributive plural is the norm, the distributive singular may also be used to focus on individual instances. We therefore often have a number choice:
The students raised their hand(s).
Some children have understanding fathers/an understanding father.
We all have a good appetite/good appetites.
Pronouns agree with their antecedent(s).
The exercise was not good for their back(s).
Either is acceptable, I think.
One or the other is often chosen only to reduce ambiguity. Here, it makes sense to reduce it by using a singular "partner."
You could argue that by no means should anyone have multiple partners, thus no ambiguity... and that's fair.
You use to in front of infinitives and gerunds
I see! Thank you very much.
hii guys, i have a question
Where does the secret to their brilliance ||lie||?
so lie is the right answer but like is this some kind of a phrase or is there a logical explanations, you could choose from a) stand (thats what i wrote), b) rest c) sit d) lie
Has the order been shipped yet? It (is supposed to be sent/was to have been sent) this morning, but I'd better check.
What option is correct guys?
Do we put an article before English book? Ex: Have you read ||(do we put an article here or no)|| English book?
My teacher told me we don't put articles before languages but does it apply in the above sentence?
We don't generally put articles before proper nouns, which books are considered, so no.
Alright thanks
This applies when you're talking about the language itself, but it doesn't apply here
Here you're asking if they've read a book, so it makes sense to say "have you read the English book/an English book/that English book", whichever one you mean
"have you read English book" sounds either incomplete or like English Book is the title of the book they're reading
Oh I see, thank you
I might have interpreted it incorrectly, but yes, book titles are different from the improper noun "book."
If the title of the book is English Book, then yeah "Have you read English Book?" is good
but that seems a little bit less likely
Yes, looking at it more literally (perhaps how you intended), "English" is an adjective here. "books" is the improper noun, and so you need an article.
The same works for other nouns too @idle dove
did you take an English class?
I see a Spanish billboard
does she want a Chinese version?
vs "do you know English", "she speaks Spanish", "Chinese is hard to learn" without the article
What's the present tense of git?
Because i couldn't find the meaning of it in GT
So i assume it's the past tense (II)
Git? Can you use it in a sentence, as an example?
Can i send it to you in dm? It's from a Ghost Rider comics, so I'd be easier if i sent it as a picture
This probably already is present, it's just spelling a way that "get" is said by some people
so the past tense would be got, like normal
^ get as in "get (away)" or "get (out)" is pretty common
I live in the southern US so it's especially common but I feel like I've heard it from other regions too
In the past,people............. to work long hours.
(a don't use
(b were using
(c use
(d used
is it Used or were using and why ?
D, because it had happened
yea i did that and its a book with answers answers said it is B
Did you misspell B as "Were using" instead of "Were used"?
nope its like that
B is wrong though?
its choosed to be right lol
i choosed D but when I checked it is answered as B
But it's wrong?
as u said yes
idk if the book creators answered it wrong or what
Either they're wrong, or you spelt something wrong, or I'm missing the context that would make this an actual sentence
i didn't spell anything wrong
Is there any extra context I could get please?
no it is just like that
alright thank you
Sounds like the textbook is wrong. D is correct.
Definitely D
Silly question. When i short the modals and to be verb. Shall i use for example I'm or I’m. I mean what's the right apostrophe
Both are correct
The formatting is different but no one cares which ones you write
Oh, thanks

Is the word exodus commonly being used? When describing emigration from a place/city/country
I just saw it for the first time on wikipedia
”exodus from the countryside to the cities in the 19th century”
It's somewhat common that way (for any general mass emigration) in writing, but in more casual language most of the time you hear it is for the book of the Bible (which also isn't very common)
that makes it a good word to at least be able to recognize and maybe use it occasionally if it fits
a little like the word "genesis" for the book of the Bible or for any general beginning of a thing, you'll occasionally see it and maybe every once in a while you'll hear it out loud
@wooden yacht well explained, BIG thank you 🙏🏼
Hi guys. I have a question. What's the meaning of Competition Quiz (example: World Cup Quiz)? Does it mean some simple questions about the competition rules, the participant's information, etc.? Or it just means a result prediction? I cannot figure it out. Please tell me and thank you in advance.
“He lapsed into the local vernacular”. Could mean that he ended up speaking the local dialect after living there for some time?
“Competition Quiz” means that there’s a quiz that everyone will take to compete and win prizes
So it's not a result prediction, right?
Nope
Thank you!
Most likely.
Not unless you want to sound like a LARPer
Yeah, but I'd say it means he "jumped" or "stumbled" into it
The 1916 Somme offensive was Britain’s most costly and remains its most notorious First World War battle, while the French army’s major role and relative success in the offensive has been all but forgotten.
"all but forgotten" - online dictionary provides two contradictory definitions for this. so does it mean very nearly forgotten, or all except forgotten?
Very nearly forgotten in that context.
thank you
This would be personification. Similes and metaphors compare two things. Personification is giving human qualities and actions to non-living things.
Another metaphor could be, "She is a cheetah."
On the other hand, "The wind whispered" is personification.
what do u think this quote suggests?
Well, the "sun beat down on us" would mean that it's really too hot.
So hot, that it's actually causing you pain, like a beating.
is there any website to help me with essay?
There is me 👉👈
I write at above college level (even though I am not in it)
I can help you write your essay
really?🥹
thank you so much 😊

How is the word “insidious” usually being used? Problems/virus/illness? I learnt it from that horror movie.
(spreading subtlely and causing harm)
Hello what does "had it not been" mean?(Does it mean the same thing as "if it had not been" means?)
For sentences like "Had it not been for him, we would not have survived." is just a way of forming the 3rd conditional. It's more formal sounding is all.
We get rid of the "if" and invert the subject and the verb:
'If it had not been' ---> Had it not been'.
The main clause stays the same:
(a) - "If it had not been for the fire department, our house would have burned down." (Normal 3rd conditional)
(b) - "Had it not been for the fire department, our house would have burned down." (Inverted 3rd conditional)
"Insidious" is used much like the definition you gave. It means to subtly and intentionally cause harm.
If you saw/heard it in the context of a movie about viruses, it could be that the movie is trying to 'personalize' it <--- (to make it have human characteristics) and make it seem like the virus is purposefully attempting to cause harm.

barely see u here
Sometimes when ||the other place|| doesn't have much going on, I come here and see what's what.
its pretty chill in this channel
hehe
LMAO
My squad isn't here, so I don't see myself being here all that often, but it's still nice to stop by and help.
if the chat hasnt been active for a few hours i'll repost it again
yes yes
Thanks Will for the well explained answer
🫡
You can shorten this to "If it hadn't been" to sound more fluent, or keep it the same if you want to sound smarter/more formal
Yooo
what does "shadow someone" mean?
I played fallout 4 and there's a mission for the brotherhood of steel when you need to shadow a NPC to find out why supplies are lost
It means to secretly follow.
actually, do you know how to do it
I have low agility and people detect me easily
Just stay on the roofs or blend in with crowds.
Oh, fallout 4. Nope, no clue.
Are keep and still the same?
Examples:
I'm still using my computer
I keep using my computer
No, keep and still are not the same. In this case, still signifies that the action is continuing to be done while keep implies that the same action is happening continuously and frequently.
The word "still" is an adverb meaning even now, to this day, or up until this point in time. It suggests that something has been occurring without interruption. For example:
I'm still using my computer - This suggests that I've been using my computer continuously since some unspecified point in the past.
The word "keep" is a verb which means to maintain possession or continue to do something. It implies that something is ongoing or repetitive and we can take active steps to sustain it over a period of time. For example:
I keep using my computer - This suggests that I'm taking action to ensure I continue using my computer over a period of time, perhaps regularly, such as every day.
Can someone explain this sentence?
Today, I traversed by velocipede to the edifice in which comestibles are kept in stock because I failed to recollect my intention to purchase curds of milk—separated from whey, of course—on yesterday’s trip to the aforementioned edifice.
Today, I rode my bike to the grocery because I forgot to buy cheese yesterday.
Hiiiii 👋 do y'all have any advice for feature writing?
I'm trying to join an extracurricular club and the club has a screening for it, Idk what I'm supposed to do
Ask game wiki on how to cheese stealth lol
What emotions is the quote “the waves crashed down on our little boat” trying to imply?
can you say in English : launch in to a discussion?
they launched into a heated discussion
Yes

I discovered in a Roleplay this "the truancy officer" and... DeepL tells me first, it is the name of a kid who does not want to go to school. But deepL does also offer me like 20 different names...
Does it depend very much on the message? (pls answer with ping)

Can I use the verbs “ accomplish and fulfil” in that meaning - I accomplished/fulfilled all my hw therefore now I’m free
a kid who doesn't want to go to school
This is a truant, not a truancy officer
a truancy officer would be someone whose job is to make sure kids are going to school the mandatory number of days, = the officer prevents truancy
Then made DeepL there a very bad job... saying as first recommendaiton that the "officer" is the one who doesn't go to school 😄
But google say the same 😭
Both translate it as the kid who skip school. (is "skip school" correct?)
What are you googling? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truancy#United_States
I google nothing. I check deepL and translate.google.com 🙂
(is "skip school" correct?)
yep, truant and truancy are pretty formal/legal language compared to schwänzen or Schwänzer in German
"While running from the scene, you trip over your own feet and fall. You land just out of view of the building and watch as the building burns. You are then caught by the truancy officer and are taken to the principal's office."
That was the message from a AI-bot which used "turancy officer" a word I didn't knowed 🙂
Also was confused why that "officer" is there and have to do with that 😄
Here in Germany, we don't have that.... maybe we have kind of "street workers" or Social Pedagogues in the school 🙂
I have no idea if I had anything like that in high school because the area I went to didn't have much of a problem with people skipping
(= i lived in a nice suburb
)
Here in Germany is it common that every school have a social pedagogue (hell thats a hard word!)
So you have someone to talk about bullying, problems with teachers, students, parents etc. 🙂
I've never heard of social pedagogues either, so typing it out doesn't help much anyway
the "someone to talk to about bullying" would be the school counselors
Its just a adult who have a office, to be there with a open ear 🙂
yep, that's what counselors are :)
(or are supposed to be)
Like a Pastor
My last Vocational school had a pastor AND a social pedagogue, it was the first school with a Pastor 😄
And those counsellors are kinda always available ?(I always fail to write this word -_-), not like teachers who are busy, sitting in the teacher room, having to drink a lot coffee 😄
correction on the wording here: in Germany it's common for every school to have a
You don't say "here in Germany is it" because that makes it into a question (unlike in german)
Yeah I tend to write like I speak, I have to switch it a bit 😄
accomplish is normally used with nouns like goal, feat, task, and fulfill is normally used with nouns like need or promise—both of those don't fit into "I ___ my homework"
The best word there is do or finish or complete, like I did my homework/I finished my homework/I completed my homework
because it's not like homework is this huge thing
Thanks
A sense of hopeless and overpowering dread crushing any of the dreams/hopes of the people in the boat, I presume
You could just say did
I did my homework
Much easier, not overtly formal either
Yes usually, my school is pretty bad so I know a lot about truancy
Or swap it and is
right, but I felt like encouraging them to be comfortable with contractions is a better learning habit anyway
since they already wrote "a kid who does not want" where it was a little awkward and they said "I tend to write like I speak"
Alr
What emotions is the quote “the waves crashed down on our little boat” trying to imply?
idk
“Parents may complain that their child does not eat a variety of healthy food. This problem doesn’t arise because the parents have been lenient about food in the past.” What does this sentense mean?
"lenient about food" makes no sense to me.
Slasher I answered this in the messages above
Lenient about the food being given
Thx, after pondering on the sentence, I now understand it.
OH SORRY I DIDNT NOTICE
and thank you
i kinda get it now
guys is it possible to say "i begin to start liking this"
i saw such a phrasing and made me wonder if it's true or not
New question:
I love the word "Pyjama(s)", but DeepL recommend me most times "Pajamas", now my question: When I write Pyjamas, should mainly everyone understand it right? Like a different "slang"?
Pajamas sounds too wrong to me, I love the "pie" sound 😄
A "sub" quest to that. does a Pyjama/Pajama ALWAYS, referring to a 2 piece set, so pants+top?
I would say you can let the "begin" away.
"I start liking this".
because start IS a form of beginning 😄
a race is starting at the "start" which is the begin of a race 🙂
i think most people spell it as pyjamas, “pj’s” would be the correct slang. They always refer it as a set, rather than individual garments
Ok, I guess otherwise it would maybe called Jumpsuit or onesie, if it is just one piece, right? 🙂 Or maybe a Nightgown. (yes I tend to write uppercase... German behavior xD)
oh, “pajamas” is used in the US so depending where you live I suppose. Yes, if its one piece then it will be a jumpsuit/onesie or a nightgown
But I'm sure even an American guy should understand Pyjama? 🙂
I mean it's just one letter 😄
i guess? I’m not American, the dictionary states so
It’s usually best not to change your spelling, wherever you live it’s best to follow the English system
then you can use either
pyjama isnt pronounced as “pie” btw
This is btw. now also a "overall" 😄
i forgot to mention that
no, it’d be pronounced as “pajamas” as well
the spelling is just different
Mit diesem kostenlosen Google-Dienst lassen sich Wörter, Sätze und Webseiten sofort zwischen Deutsch und über 100 Sprachen übersetzen.
activate the sound and listen, so its from the German 😄
a bit more of a “pi-“ sound maybe, depending on ur accent
The German version is "Pie" with a high "i"
i see
thats why I am used to it, we say piejama 😄
the way i usually pronounce it is with a slight “a” lmao
so like.. Payment?
no
i can’t hear it lmao
maybe cuz im not German
🙂
It’s just “pa” without stressing the a
I mean... REAL german is "Schlafanzug" (sleeping suit)
nice
But this should get called sleeping overalls right? @mint seal
most people wouldn’t say “sleeping overalls” and neither have I heard that phrase
I’d call it a onesie or smt, usually
you can even call it pj’s
well, it’s called pj’s in both pictures
A onesie can be pyjamas, but pyjamas aren't necessarily onesies. All clothes made for sleeping could fall under the umbrella of pyjamas.
And yeah, we don't generally use the word "overalls" outside of talking about the strapped apron-like overalls.
overalls sound fancy ngl
but then its not clear, its a one piece suit 😄
I need to have the absolute correct words (without a long describing) for AI-Text-RPG's 😉
pjs can be used as an umbrella term(like what Ron said)
but if you want to be more proper then onesies
tbf its up to you
explain that the AI xD
I never used DeepL, whatever its called
Onesies is a term derived from jumpsuit. They're just warmer and looser.
It's the most specific you can get.
what about it? Whats wrong?
I showed you a AI Chat.
I need words, to explain them in a RPG to a BOT 😉
try writing an answer, then you can post it here or proofreading and ask if its correct
That was just... a sample to show you what I mean with AI, not DeepL 😉
you told me to explain the AI or something but you don’t have a question
I got confused
noooo, you missunderstand me 😄 I just try to learn correct words for garments 😉
so, when I roleplay with the bots, they understand WHAT I wear 😉
You can't liftup a "shirt" of a overall, but you can liftup the top of a 2 piece pyjama 😉
yes but you said this, which to my assumption I thought you had another question
^
no no, sorry 🙂
it’s ok
I just wanted to make clear its not up to me, the AI needs to understand it 😄
I wasted one day 6-8hours to explain a AI how to undress a Dungarees.... because its in text only a hell complicated garment 😄
well, the AI bot would only follow the American spelling but it would be able to understand anything else
if the term isn’t within the American English system, wtv its called
then it may not understand
The Ai is from China, trained on US/UK English 😉
(and horrible bad German translators...)
yeah so only use UK/US English
But i can get whatchu mean
when a bot doesn’t understand some of the words you use and its a little frustrating
i use a lot of Aussie slang lmao
what does flipping the bird mean?
To point the middle finger at someone
As an offensive gesture
I began to start enjoying this
Would work
Just use began
Whichever way you would spell it it is correct, it's also plural with s so one pyjama is usually never said, almost always with s
"she was a kind of women who goes back to their abuser"
what does going back means here??
To return, in this case she would return back to her abuser
The sentence is kinda wrong tho, just grammatically or whatever
It should be “she was the kind of woman who goes back to their abuser”
Koskos
for studies showed (can “for” be used here)
What context?
She was the kind of woman who goes back to her abuser.
Recently however, ___ studies showed that the acquisition of elementary associations such as stimulus-reflex response is possible during sleep, both in humans and in animals.
going back means to return
or repeat the same again and again
oh i understand thanks
does my sentence was grammatically incorrect ??
obviously, yes
and what about my previous sentence ,was that incorrect too?
||me who literally responded but was unseen
/hj||
😌 sorry not my fault
sorry sir, i didnt saw that
which one? can you post it again?
this one @marble whale
Was my sentence grammatically incorrect?
thanks alot

We like our friends to say what they think.

Hey, there!
Here's the answer:
1-It is liked by us that what they think is said by our friends.
2-He was hoped to be met by Mustafa.
srry for the question but what is the difference between journey and voyage?
A voyage is a journey specifically by sea and or space.

🧐
You can't help?
Sweat shorts/running shorts are both correct.
Jogging shorts sound fine too and I'm pretty sure I've heard it used.
When I use "sweat shorts" DeepL always say its "sweating shorts" in German xD
so... with space or without...
Never used it without the space, though it's probably fine either way.
okay, thanks
Shorts
Gym shorts
Pirate everything in English
Zoro.to is great for English anime dubs
Will you please help me
What did he write in his will
What do you wish for, Will?
just shorts? no info about the soft fabric by saying "sweat"?
Info on the fabric would be just gym
But not sweat because they're shorts, and if you want to know why
Keine Ahnung, it's just stupid English
Gym shorts
Thank you
I used that, thanks!
Bitte schön
Buttocks is the medical term. The other is just a pretty informal way of saying the same thing.
And what is the "normal" word?
Aside from just say bottom/butt in all 😄 (or even worse, backside)
do u have book recommendations for interest diversification
Mentioning "cheeks" isn't commonly brought up since it's scarcely used outside of immature contexts. People just say butt or the less appropriate word, typically.
Nope.
how's it going at college? / how are you doing at college?
Are both correct? Is there a difference? 🤔
what about books for improving ur english
Both are correct. Natives will answer both in pretty much the exact same way.
I can't really say since I'm not a teacher and have never needed that kind of resource.
okay
Thank you!
Okay. Thanks 🙂
Oh, on second thought, natives might answer both slightly different. The first is usually more general and often invites additional conversation regarding the subject. The second with "doing" usually relates to wellbeing and it's probably going to be interpreted as "how is your mental health relating to college?" or "how are your grades in college?"
Both are fine, generally.
Wow, I didn't know anything about it, thank you
English grammar in use by Raymond Murphy

can the word "module" be also pronounced as /ˈmɒdjuːl/ ?
there’s only 1 way to pronounce that word
correctly
so yes
How could I boost my level of pronunciation
I've also seen it pronounced as /ˈmɒdʒ.uːl/ so, which one do you think is correct?
This example would be more correct
*Come let's open the frontiers of our lives. ( My friend sent me this can u explain me. What does it mean)
it's prnnounced as modjul
My darling friends how are u doin?
I have a qs
My parents have to migrate
What do u think?
Can I prepare them ?
Our time is about 3month
Depends on the accent/dialect one's using
Some don't pronounce the 'd' as a 'j'
I believe the more popular accents pronounce it that way
But let's be inclusive
I'm a foreigner and I don't hear that word often, but when I hear it it's usually modjul
I pronounce it like "mah-jwool"
Or I guess it's actually more like "mah-jah-wool" with 3 syllables but that second syllable is nearly inaudible and almost combines with the third syllable
Do English native speakers use often "herebyafter" , "herebybefore" , "herewith" etc. In my opinion It's kind of from legalese . What do you think?
"hereinafter" and "hereinbefore" are words, the first 2 you wrote aren't
So I assume you mean these
They're very formal
Pretty much only in official documents (/legalese like you say)
Nobody uses these out loud, although in part that's just because it wouldn't make much sense to
They mean after/before this point in the document/whatever it is
Herewith also very formal, I can only think of e.g. receiving a letter that says something like "the card is enclosed herewith"
hi why is the answer "must" instead of "have to"?
if you're traveling by air, you (must) always carry your passport
Is it right to use the word “simile” in that context. If it’s not , can you provide me w some examples? This simile between the energy consumption and production in France is untruthful.
Is it appropriate to say "sperm whale" or should i always prefer cashalote?
And why is it called that way? 😭
Never heard of cashalote lol
Yes you must always refer to it as the population pudding whale
Whoever named it must have been going through something...
Ok @light kernel
Could you rephrase this please
I don't understand
Must is more official, more intrusive?
I don't think there is a reason for this
I've done it
Extremely rare though
Prepare them to speak English?
No, but I recommend you all take a high intensity course

hi
cachalote is French for sperm whale
the English word is sperm whale, so if you speak English you should use the English term
because have to is an informal way to say must
native speakers don't use the mentioned words often
Hello
what does they mean by "something in a nutshell" ??
does they mean that "something" is a bad thing
"something in a nutshell" just means a very compacted version. Like, "this book is history in a nutshell"
So, no. It's just very brief.
thanks
it does not
guys,dealer or seller?
Depends on the context
Does someone have hacks to understand how to transcribe in phonetics
do you sell drugs or your kidney?
if it's your kidney you're a seller, if it's drugs you're a dealer
"What the figures cannot show us is 'the human dimension of the disaster'."
It's an example of the word 'dimension' from dictionary, so no more context :))
I really fail to understand 'the human dimension' part here.....
Does it mean something like 'the parts of the disaster caused by the humans'?
Is it now "pyjama-covered" or "pyjama covered"? (yes I write pyjama, not pajama)
(this is the recommendation from DeepL "write" a grammar helper)
how come you can send pics here 😂
talk more and you unlock it 😉 its just 20-30messages ;)....
Guess, it's that role.
Hyphenating any sort of compound adjective before the noun it describes is preferred. I would hyphenate in your example.
Yes, this is the same way I interpret it. A parallel might be "the human element of the disaster."
that sounds confusing xD now I need to google that Hpyh..
Oh... Bindestrich, hell its so complicated named xD
I don't even use the German word. we just say a "line" (strich) 😄
thank you!! 🫡
a native on Reddit told me,
it's the opposite. It's talking about all the horrible effects the disaster had on humans.
This would be even in german a HELL complicated text, like a german teacher would speak 😄
I try just to understand the German text and fail °_° 😭
connected adjectives, needs a "minus" "-" 😄 I think thats it...
Essentially. They may not always be adjectives. "two-year-old" is a compound adjective with a noun at the start, for example. As a whole, it's a single adjective.
Yep, this sounds right. Looking at synonyms may be easier if you find a troublesome word again. "aspect" and "element" are both synonymous with "dimension" and may offer a clearer insight. Of course, this is only true if you understand those definitions in context as well.
And I thought I am good in German, but now it sounds like, I need to understand "perfect" grammar again xD...
I'm not certain German has compound adjectives like we do, so it may not be helpful.
THANK YOU! 🙏
I think for "normal" talking in Internet and social life, is it not that much used but... when I write with a bot, I wanna try to be accurate 😄
Since the beginning of time, humans everywhere have been inventing, In fact, most of what is around you now was invented by someone in the past. -------- Think about the alphabet that we are using to communicate right now. The ink and the paper that these words are written on. The clothes you are wearing. The chair you are sitting on.All of these are inventions, and there is a person,a human mind, behind each of them.
A-Sometimes scientists discover a model of an early invention, and from this model, they can accurately tell us where it came from
B-Just as inventions can lead to discoveries, discoveries can sometimes also lead to inventions
C- We have grown so used to these things, however, that we often don't realize that they are inventions.
D-Without their contribution, some discoveries and techniques wouldn't have been possible even with such great inventions.
E-This is how we know, for example, about the Heron of Alexandria, who created countless machines in the late first century CE.
Is this question asking which is more appropriate? It would be C.
Thank you i was thinking C too.
Also I think it would be got most of the time

ist IT "She had seen the movie and then she read the book" or "She saw the movie and then she Had read the book"?
Which sentences is correct?
Both are correct but the second one is a bit wordy. You could also say “She saw the movie and then she read the book”
When we use past perfect + past simple, we mean that first A happened (Past Perfect), and then (after a while/gap, NOT immediately) B happened (Past Simple)
But when we use past simple + past simple [+ past simple ....], we mean that two (or more) things happened right after eachother.
The second sentence is wrong.
We use "then" to explain something happened next.
We cannot use past simple + then + past perfect.
Because past perfect is one tense "paster" than past simple and it won't make sense if we use the second sentence, because we cannot go back in time, can we?
Hello guys! How are you doing? Can you please give me some tips about how to pass the reading section in the Cambridge exam?I am currently preparing for FCE and I think that reading section is my weakest spot.Thank you in advance!☺️
👍
Preparing for the reading section of the Cambridge FCE: Have you tried the sample tests provided by Cambridge? https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/cbpt/2015/fce-reading-and-uoe/index.xhtml Although the content is similar, your exam strategy will depend on whether you take a paper test vs. a computer-based test.
Of the two, the most serious blow was the rain. Water is never far below the surface in this part of Belgium anyway, and the British preliminary bombardment had completely destroyed the local drainage system.
Can anyone spell out for me what "never far below the surface" means? I really don't understand
I'd say that it's not a dry place, rather it has sufficient water. With the bombardment having destroyed the drainage system, due to rains water has perhaps overflown and waterlogged the area
Hello, im trying to study for tomorrow english test, there is one sentence in the rewrite the following sentence exercise " I must thank the man. I got the present from him" so i wrote " i must thank the man whose present i got from him" is it correct?
It's 100% literal. It is not true that water is far from the surface. Water is always close to the surface, to put it the other way around.
Surface (of the ground)
Far/close describing vertically where the water level is, below the ground
Technically yes but it's very awkward
Removing "from him" helps
But then it's possible the present is for him and you took it
I must thank the man who gave me this present, something like this
Thank you, that 1+ point for my test
Or "who I got this present from" to stay closer to the original
Two past events. First one is watching movie and then reading book. So for the first one we use past perfect and then for the next one simple past. Hence "She had seen the movie and she read the book" is grammatically correct sentence.
And the other one Not ?
Grammatically the second sentence is wrong how far I know.
Past perfect is used before the immediate past event.
"I must thank the man from whom I got the present." seems more appropriate.
top 10 german moment
I must thank the man from whom I got the present.
Or
I must thank the man whom I got the present from.
The first sentence is much better and more advanced.
Okay, thanks

He's set to marry for the fifth time at 91
He's set to have a XXX surgery.

Hello, could someone help me with this please. What does "The fact that he could hear his father made it no less surprising that his father was calling at all" mean?
Context: the father was calling his son, and his cell phone service was bad
Can someone rewrite this sentence for me? I am not so sure what does it mean by "no less surprising ... at all "
"She knew verbatim the best quotes from Plato and Cato."
~ A good girl's Guide to murder
Here ,are Plato and Cato books ?If not pls tell what are they .
" It might only look like a few feet but there was a rumbling chasm between where she stood and over there "
- Agggtm
Even though he could actually hear his father calling, he was still surprised to find it happening
Authors
Oh okay thanks 😊
Cato was Roman, Plato was Greek
Oh now I got what the author meant
The name Plato is very well known as an example of an ancient philosopher even by people who don't know anything else about him
I see your question you don't also need to ping me
Oh , I am sorry
Rumbling is a kind of noise, like thunder, or an avalanche, or someone dragging a wheelie bin across a road
Easier to find a clip and listen to it than for me to try to describe the sound
And chasm ?
A chasm is a large deep gap
Okay , Thanks again and also sorry for distributing you .
Thank you. I appreciate your help

which one of the follow sentence is more correct and why:
A)They were working on it all week.
B)They had been working on it all week.
are both of them correct ??
"Ingorer" it's meaning person who ignore people etc?
Are there synonymous of this word?
Both of those sentences are equally wrong because of "all weeks"
"All week" works, as would "every week" for more than one
After that, the tense-aspect doesn't change which one is "more correct"
“He was innocent right enough. The gang had got me squared and between us we got him put away for stretch.” What does the second sentence mean?
(The guy who said this was an ex-officer and indulged perjury)
Hello
when I finished my sentence. what else can I say instead of “thank you, back to you”?
Dauleet do you mean ignorer
You don't have to say anything at all 😳
Sorry guys
Hy guys can I ask something, There is a sentence that I don't understand the meaning is
"Like something a bard had spun"
Thank u
Bards were musicians and story tellers, and it's pretty common to refer to stories being woven/spun. So, it probably means that whatever the sentence was referring to was like a story, unbelievable or fanciful.
What's the meaning of the following sentence? :
"Their words good padding for even worst ideas."
They say things that make even the worst ideas sound good
hey guys I have a question

what words can be used for that purpose?
@flat rune thank u
"but I had escape him, and glowed with the giddy lightness of solitude . It was the first time I had been alone in weeks "

Hi
@novel moth what is the difference between shutting down and shutting off
Nothing
"shutting down" and "shutting off" can be used interchangeably in some contexts, but they can also have slightly different meanings depending on the context in which they are used.
"shutting down" refers to the process of closing down a system or device in an orderly manner.
"shutting off" typically refers to the process of turning off a device or system abruptly, without following the proper shutdown procedure.
it's common to say "I shut off my computer" or "I shut down my computer" to mean the same thing - turning off the computer's power.

Hi! In spanish is common to say "Thanks to you!" after someone thanks us, is it common in english too or it sounds unnatural?
We use "thanks to you" but not in that way. So yes, it's unnatural. We might say "thank you too" or "thank you as well" or just "no, thank you." (saying it's thanks to them and not yourself). You can always say "no, it's thanks to you" to mean that whatever you're thankful for is because of them, but that's usually in the context of progress (the goal we accomplished is thanks to you)
Oh, thank you so much for the long explanation!
I couldn't find how to answer to a "thank you", very useful examples as well!
No problem. "thank you too" is probably the most common if you want to thank someone back.
May anyone help me with an annotated bibliography please?
I’m really stressing out over it
@flat rune A book the song of Achilles
Ooooooooh thanks....it sounded super interesting
@flat rune Yes it is,
Unnatural and something I rarely hear. “Thanks to you we have enough money to go to Vegas”
Grammar/Sentence syntax question. Can someone take a look at the following sentence and let me know if it makes sense?
Sentence: Ever since you came to this camp a few days ago, you've managed to search through every nook and cranny of this place.
Context: Spoken speech. This camper was commenting to another camper that ever since the latter had arrived at this camp a few days ago, he had managed to search through every nook and cranny of the place.
For me, 'ever since' and 'few days ago' don't go together.
Either- Ever since you came to this camp, you've managed to....
Or
You've come to this camp only a few days ago yet you managed to....
If someone has a different opinion, do let me know
This assignment is designed to help you prepare for the final essay. For your annotated bibliography, you will need to gather a list of five secondary sources for your final essay project. A secondary source can be defined as a work that comments on or criticizes a primary source – it is thus “secondary” to the primary source. For example, Terry Eagleton has written an essay that comments on Emily Brontë’s novel, Wuthering Heights. Eagleton’s essay is therefore a “secondary source.” All sources must be from MLA International Bibliography, unless you have received approval from me to use a different source. More recent secondary sources (e.g. those published within the last 10 years) should be given preference over older sources, unless an older source has been particularly influential. You will know if an older source is influential because it will be consistently cited in more recent sources.
Your annotated bibliography should list your sources as MLA-style citations, and offer a summary and evaluation of each secondary source.
In the first paragraph following each citation, you should summarize (in your own words) the main points of the essay. Here are some questions to consider: What is the thesis? What is the approach? What kinds of evidence does the author use?
In the second paragraph, you should evaluate (in your own words) each source. Some questions to consider in your evaluation: where do you disagree with the argument? How could you build on the author’s points by taking a different angle or by looking at different examples? Does this source respond to any other sources on your list? What do they agree or disagree on?
Please post a copy of your annotated bibliography to Brightspace under “Assignments.” You are not required to write your final essay on the subject of your annotated bibliography; rather, you may take advantage of the research of your peers (i.e., their posted annotated bibliographies) and choose a different text.

You are planning an expedition with a group of friends. Consider the following options:
-a weekend climbing trip in mountains that are steep and rocky

can someone help me with this?
i choose the first option
What points have you thought of till now?
Hi I want to improve my skills
Which skills
That's such a vague question
Writing Skills

Note down these pointers:
- Develop your own writing style which is solely yours and is reflected in whatever you write.
- Read books and good write-ups.
- Practise writing, for example you could make diary entries every night.
Thanks
- Practise basic grammar
You don't want your sentences to be grammatically incorrect
i did not think of any points yet
Have not thought*
Did not think is grammatical... But perfect tenses are better in these contexts
good evening
Do you know EF ?
Can you use this word in a sentence, please? And I will explain. 🤗
Which one is more common at the real life?
1 - "I did try"
2 - "I tried"
2
2
Ok thanks
Both are used in different contexts.
It's true that the latter is more commonly used, but since they are different, I don't see a reason to compare between them

can anyone teach me language english?
in which way? to speak english more fluent or to start with learning the english language in general?
What should i do to be more fluent??
i accidentally responded AND misread the wrong comment
depends on what field you want to focus on
Study a lot vocabulary, speak a lot english with other people , ban your language from your every day routine, read books, listen to audio books. And the most important thing is to stay consistent.
ouf xD
english(obvi, im still in hs), japanese(as my elective)and cantonese(cuz my grandparents dont speak english)

Guys need help urgently
_____ I went, people were angry or suspicious.
a) somehow
b) everywhere
c) somewhat
d) somewhere
I think its a Everywhere or somewhat
its b
What should I do. The chatgpt part told me that the correct answer is somewhere.
i think it depends on the context and especially what you want to say.
I have no context, just one question. Okay, thanks for your help.
With the support of recent optical observations and additional radar observations, the uncertainty in Apophis’ orbit has collapsed from hundreds of kilometers to just a handful of kilometers when projected to 2029. This greatly improved knowledge of its position in 2029 provides more certainty of its future motion, so we can now remove Apophis from the risk list.
Can anyone rephrase the sentence in bold for me? What does it mean when the "uncertainty in an orbit has collapsed from such-and-such distance"?
Yes, of course?
@urban root, invites are not allowed!
@digital sandal Hi, can I talk to you?
Sure. 🤗
Hello, I don't know how to speak or write in English (I'm using a translator for this, I'm speak Spanish). I wanted to ask if you recommend any platform for learning English or a virtual or in-person teacher. I'm not sure which option would be best for me.
Hi I used to do it
And I speak Spanish too
I don’t use the translator now ,I think the thing that helped me was watch videos in English with subtitles and see memes on instagram or tik tok and also talk with people in this app
But I’m in one English institute too
You can write me if you want
I can talk to you in both languages
And other thing is that you need to think in English
If you think in Spanish the words don’t have senses
If you want to improve your English fluency, you need to start thinking in English. These four strategies to help train your brain to think in English will help you improve your English communication skills. And the best part is, it does not involve any translating in your head!
And don't forget to check out our website for the writeup and podc...

The orbit is some path in space, and we can try to measure where exactly that path goes. But no measurement is perfect so we can only say e.g. "we know the path within 100 km". This paragraph talks about predicting where its path will go in 2029.
The bold sentence says that thanks to some recent observations, the uncertainty in that prediction has decreased from hundreds of km down to a much smaller value, just some km.
Is there such a thing as "negative excitement"? Like Schadenfreude?
@devout flare, invites are not allowed!
Unexcited? Idk

Maybe you could phrase it with "you are happy when something bad happens to [specific person/name]"
otherwise i don't think that there's existing a direct translation.
Can someone take a look at the following line and let me know if it's grammatically or syntactically correct?
Sentence: I didn’t expect an outsider to remain alive after disrupting a trial.
Context: It's a line spoken by a priest of a tribe. Usually, outsiders who disrupt a village trial would be stoned to death. But this dude was so clever and managed to unmask the true killer so they let him live. I am doing translation work so I can't afford to be too creative with this line.

Grammar question about tense mixing. Is the following sentence correct? Is it right to mix present and past tense in the following sentence?
Sentence: He doesn't even remove his ring when he takes a bath, so how did it get stolen?
Context: Spoken dialogue. A person was wondering out loud about the missing ring. The owner has a habit of wearing his ring even in the bath, so the speaker was wondering how it got stolen.
Everything here looks correct.
thanks for your feedback! 🙂
Hello, could anyone rewrite this sentence for me please?
"It wasn't as if her father was never around"
Context: "Bette sat down at the kitchen table while her father filled the electric teakettle with water. It wasn't as if her father was never around."
maybe you mean "It wasn't as if her father was always around."
Any grammatical errors? 😅
There's nothing better than to sit at the yard in a sunny afternoon reading a book.

I think it would be better as, "There's nothing better than SITTING IN the yard ON a sunny afternoon, reading a book."

Sentence syntax question. Can someone take a look at the following sentence and tell me if it's wrong or if it sounds weird?
Sentence: Perhaps they may even have left firearms lying around, hoping for a shooting incident to happen on the island.
Context: Spoken speech. Someone was commenting on how a certain fictitious group of terrorists might act to create crime. It's a translation so I can't get too creative with it.
Where has my father been? He asked me
what would be the reported speech here
He asked me where his father had been.
Looks fine lad
I would put the have before the even while nothing is wrong with it being like how it is.. it is phrased more like how a young child would phrase it than how a adult would

Grammar question. If you were a D&D DM, how would you narrate the following line?
**A) After you wash away the filth from its body, the baby unicorn nods its head at you and runs away.
B) After you have washed away the filth from its body, the baby unicorn nods its head at you and runs away.
**
A or B? Which one is grammatically correct. It's a game in progress and the DM is narrating the line at one of the players who have chosen to give the unicorn a bath.
“I will watch a movie hopefully i become fluent in English after” is this sentence grammatically correct?
I'd say they have slightly differing nuance
The fomer indicates a general scenario while the latter doesn't
Hello everyone, I want to discuss the grammar of this sentence.
**"The last time I attended a ceremony of this character was in the spring of 1941, when, as Chancellor of Bristol University, I conferred a degree upon the United States Ambassador, Mr.Winant, and in absentia upon President Conant, our President, who is here today and presiding over this ceremony. "
**
I want to know if the main clause of this sentence is ‘The last time I attended a ceremony of this character was in the spring of 1941’?
Syntax question. Can someone tell me if the following sentence makes sense?
Sentence: The smell of her baking a pie in the grove draws the brownies to her.
Context: This woman is baking a pie and the brownies are drawn to that smell.
it is corrcet in grammar, but make sure to put a comma in the sentance, like this " i will watch a movie , hopefully i will become fluent in english after" you can also say " i'll watch a movie" which I'll is just a combination of i and will
Yea, but if as you say at the end she "is baking" the pie, then the sentence should have "is drawing"
It's wrong to start with so
thanks for your input! 🙂
Indicative ok
ok
Do you have a guess for the answer?
you had had a bath
Yeap
why
i think the question shouldn't exist
she had a bath
did she have a bath
you had a bath
did you have a bath
?
@boreal pewterpls mate
Ok well the question does exist lol
The 1st "had" is auxiliary, same as in "I had eaten it"
and
The 2nd "had" is normal, like "I had lunch"
I have a shower every morning
This kind of have
So the whole thing is past perfect
possessive ??
No
Have a shower, have a bath, have lunch, these uses of "have" just mean "do" pretty much
Wash yourself in a shower/bath, eat lunch
ok
so
mate
the structure is " Subject + has/have/had + verb 3 + object "
where v3 is had
For the perfect, yes
It is
"had a bath" means "bathed" yea
so
i had been living under a rock
in my whole life
i had lived under a rock in my whole life
i had had live under a rock in my whole life 🤣
No lol you can't just add "had"s everywhere
I had been living under a rock in my whole life (until some point in the past)
I have been living under a rock my whole life (to the present)
Because the expression "have a bath" exists
someone did it
Negative : Someone didn't do it
negative : Noone did it
@boreal pewter
welp i m in dilemma
@chrome heron, invites are not allowed!
Someone didn't do it - There is a person who didn't do it
No one did it - There are no people who did it
You could argue either of these for the negative version of that sentence
Can someone please please please help me with this
its the only reason i joined this server

Guys I do not know why, but why's my English so good without studying? I'm 16 years old and I live in Denmark. My pronounciation is like a native and my speaking ability is coherent. When comparing it to my classmates there's miles of difference. My english teach thought I was American where she called upon me and asked "Did you live in the US or have any relations with the country, or even have family members?" No I don't. I'm just naturally really good. Why am I this good and not my classmates, when they also watch English series/movies as me?
It's not like they aren't listening to music whatsoever.
English tends to me more easier the more you’ve learnt in the past. Once you start mastering the fundamental parts of the language then eventually you may find it easier than others. You might even have a good ear or so, and you’re probably learning faster than the other students. Idk you but there are endless possibilities really, I’d say the main thing is also having confidence
I was really bad at english when I was at the age of 12 - 13
Now i'm 16 and I speak like a native speaker with C2
I didn't practice that is what's creeping me out
What about your reading/writing/listening?
Reading is topnotch, writing is really good and listening is good too.
Then maybe you’re just naturally good with languages
Wouldn't say so
I'm not grammatically good
Just the ability to speak
Pronounciations.
If you were continuously surrounded by English throughout your years of learning then it has probs grown on you
What other languages do you speak?
Danish, Turkish, English and Spanish
And can read arabic
That’s cool
Yeh
I can only read English fluently but I’m in the middle of being able to read Japanese
Kanji?
Yeah, kanji
Hiragana and katakana*
Gosh it's hard speaking from experienge
I write fast 😂
Agreed
Kanji is easy for me to remember bc my ethnicity is Chinese
That's cool to know
But I was born in Australia
Chinese is hard as well
It’s why I dropped it lmao
Ig your motive behind learning japanese is anime?
It got harder to learn
Partially
I have an exam in 2 minutes lol
I was cool with reading subtitles
I’m just doing it lmao
🤪💪🏽👍🏽
Had an English exam yesterday
But today I’m doing ancient history and Japanese speaking
Do you use duolingo?
No
Sadly, no one responded to my questions. I've been waiting all night.
Oh what was your question? I would love to help!
@pseudo urchin Hi, Thanks. I want to discuss the grammar of this sentence.
"The last time I attended a ceremony of this character was in the spring of 1941, when, as Chancellor of Bristol University, I conferred a degree upon the United States Ambassador, Mr.Winant, and in absentia upon President Conant, our President, who is here today and presiding over this ceremony. "
I want to know if the main clause of this sentence is ‘The last time I attended a ceremony of this character was in the spring of 1941’?
