HEAT YOU CAN BEAT By Jenny

The corridors at Bidhurst School echoed with the shrill ring of the bell; the last time Zara would hear it this term. She rushed out of the classroom; her hair bouncing. The holidays had finally arrived.

As soon as she escaped school, she peddled to Willow Farm to see her chestnut pony Copper. Once she arrived, Zara dumped her bike and ran to see the ponies. Freshly mown grass wafted in the air, butter coloured bees’ hummed and the humid air stuck to her legs. Zara was so excited since Angela (the yard manager) said she could help her new racehorse Hope.

She set to work mucking out the ponies (Copper, Rolo a bay gelding and Caspar the piebald cob) then headed a short distance up the road to where she lived with her mum. The sky tainted in a pink sunset. After dinner, she headed upstairs to go to bed; she was eager to get to the stables the next day.

In the night, Zara woke from a deep sleep with a start and realised that the barking she heard wasn’t a dream… She flung open the window and as the cold air hit her face the smell of smoke chocked her. Zara’s blood ran cold as she stared at the billowing smoke and an orange glow from the stables. Her first thought was of Copper.

She rushed down the stairs shouting, “Fire!” in terror as she pulled on an old jumper and boots. Before her mum could stop her, she burst out of the door and into the bitter night, cycling as fast as lightning.

Suddenly Zara remembered that Angela wasn’t there tonight, although she wished she was. She raced over to Copper’s stable and when he saw her he whinnied. Relief flooded through her once she glanced at him and saw he was ok. Panicking, she ran up the row of stables and unbolted each wooden door. Copper, Caspar and Rolo were eager to escape the roaring fire and charged out to the paddock. Then came Jill (the black Shetland).

Hope, the racehorse, didn’t appear.

Zara peered into his stable and saw he was sweating, trembling with terror in his eyes cowering at the back of the stable. How was she going to get Hope out? Suddenly Zara remembered a strategy she had learnt. She stripped off her jumper and carefully blindfolded him, peering outside Zara spotted Jill waiting for Hope. Hope sensed her presence and blindly walked forward just as another beam holding the stables up fell “CRASH”.

But there was something wrong Nell (the Border collie) wasn’t barking any more. Then Zara saw it. Her kennel crushed by an old beam. Zara knelt down next to her and gently picked Nell up. Tears pricked her eyes and by now Zara was trembling; then she fell…

“Zara Zara are you ok?” Zara was surrounded by everyone in the yard and a vet was examining the animals. Angela was crying and said in sobs that Zara was a hero.

The Red Bluster by Max

One day a small skinny boy called James was walking to school with his friends when he spotted Darren Harper the most muscular boy in school. Darren was James’ archenemy and was always boasting that he was stronger and faster than everyone else.

Even though he was skinny and weak, he did not mind that but he did mind when people picked on him because of it. You see James’ dream was to slay a beast that everyone feared and that beast was the Red Bluster.

Knock Knock! James snapped out of his trance! Knock knock it came louder this time. He slowly approached the door. Standing outside was a figure dressed in black. It opened its mouth and said, “Ah James, I’ve been looking for you.”

James was frozen in fear. What was this man doing on his doorstep? He wanted to cry out for help but something stopped him. After all, he didn’t know what he was doing here.

First the man explained that he could help James with his problem. James was baffled by how this man knew of his problem. The man offered to give him a sword, axe or spear. James chose the sword with its ruby red gem glinting in the sunlight. Next, he was able to choose his ranged weapon. He decided on a bow and arrow. Engraved on the side of it was an enormous dragon. Finally, he was given a wizard’s wand.

“Cool!” James said.

Just as he was about to walk away, the man stopped him and told James that he had to go on a quest to defeat the Red Bluster.

“Yes!”-cried James “I will!”

The next day, James set off on his quest. He trekked through vast jungles, open fields and swan through dirty lakes but finally he made it.

He had found the colossal cave of the Red Bluster.

By pushing aside a few rocks, James squeezed inside but the jagged rocks fell down behind him sealing him inside.

“Hello?” he squeaked.

No answer.

“Hello?” he called. Still silence. Suddenly the beast leaped out at him making a cut in his arm.

“Ow!” James cried.

He jumped back using his good arm to slash at the ravenous beast with his sword. It reeled back in surprise. James tried to draw his bow but the gash in his arm prevented him so he threw it at the beast instead but it rebounded off its skin and nearly flew into James’ face. He was sweating .He dodged this way and that trying to fight off the beast. At last, it made its move. It flung itself at James making a giant wound in his chest. This was it.

James had an idea. He whipped out his wand. Kapow! The Red Bluster roared in pain and fell to the floor. James stood still. Then he too fell to the floor forevermore.

The Escape by Sammy

Once upon a time there were two little people called Abe and Alba. They lived in a book in a bookshop until one day, someone bought it. The person who bought it was a teacher called Mrs Hard, who loved reading stories to her class. When Mrs Hard got home, she got a cup of coffee and put it on the table and read the book. After Mrs Hard finished, she carelessly left open the book and went to bed.

Meanwhile, Abe and Alba escaped from the book and ran into Mrs Hard’s bedroom. They climbed up the end of the bed and jumped on it. They got two of Mrs Hard’s socks to use as sleeping bags and put in it two springs, some rope, and some sellotape.

Then they used the rope as a zip line to get to the window and they climbed out of the open window and escaped from the house. They climbed the highest tree and set up a den with sticks and leaves. The leaves were for beds and the sticks were for shelter from the rain.

Next, they picked fruit from the tree and ate it and they slept in the den. So when Mrs Hard woke up she closed the book without knowing that they weren’t inside and Mrs Hard set off for school.

When she arrived at school, there was no one there as usual so she decided to read the book again. But when she opened the book, the pages were blank. The children were coming into the classroom because school was starting. Mrs Hard told her class the sad news that Abe and Alba were missing from the book. Harvey said. “What?”

Marshall said, “Who are Abe and Alba?” Every one asked who they were. Until Sammy said, “They must have escaped from the book.” Then the whole class was out of control, looking around the whole classroom for them. Eddie said, “They could have gone to the boys’ toilet.” He asked Mrs Wraige if he could go to the toilet but then the whole class wanted to go to the toilet. Then Miss Latter heard all the noise and asked what was going on. But what Mrs Hard didn’t know that Abe and Alba had jumped on the back of her car and come into school with her that morning.

Mrs Hard chased all the class down to the bottom playground. They checked in the outdoor classroom and the spiritual garden. Some of the class were digging holes but the rest of them were looking up in the trees. Then Sammy saw a little movement in the tree. Harvey tried to climb the tree to get them and Matilda spotted one of their zip lines. Sammy jumped up and caught them. He ran back to the class and put them safely back in the book. Then Mrs Hard could finally read the story to the class.

It was exactly twelve o’clock at night, Chloe had been making feeble excuses to her friends to do a naughty thing…they were sneaking out to a café which was the only good one on the planet!

“Come on its time!” Chloe said into her walkie-talkie, her dark eyes glinting with excitement. Sam picked up. ”I’m not sure about this Chloe!” said Sam shakily,

“Huh” answered Chloe, “Don’t be a baby. It will be fun.” Just as she said it the thunder boomed like a lion roaring. Kyle and Cliff picked up. “Come on Sam” You see Kyle and Cliff were only doing this to support Chloe.

“Oh fine!” groaned Sam “But if we get caught I’m not getting arrested.”

“We’ll meet up in Quarter Street.” said Cliff.

“Agreed.” said Chloe confidently.

“Aargh!” she screamed …”Hang on wait a second.” said Chloe. She slowly picked up the rat. “It’s a robot!” gasped Chloe. She reached inside of the rat and pulled out a shiny dark purple device with a red flashing light on it. Everyone was confused. Kyle’s eyes widened “It’s a tracker!” he whispered.

All of a sudden, a posh jet-black limo started speeding down the road. It’s engine roaring loudly.

“Run!” shouted Chloe. But everyone knows cars are faster than humans. The limo screeched to a halt in front of them. Out got two buff men wearing tuxedos. They threw the children into the limo.

“OW, watch out!” shouted Cliff. “What’s in my mouth?” he said yawing before dozing off.

“Oh no!” said Chloe, “sleeping pills.”

While that was happening, they were driven to a science lab. They were put in tanks and tested. They were injected with new DNA. This gave them powers. They woke up in a different planet with a terrible headache.

“What happened?” Chloe groaned looking around her. The rest were still sleeping.

“Wake up!” shouted Chloe.

“What? What?” said everyone at the same time.

“I know.” said Chloe, “Ah achoo!” Chloe sneezed out lightning “Cool!“

Everyone said they all had their own power. Cliff had fire, Sam could fly and Kyle could see through walls. On the planet, they faced aliens, monsters and crocodiles. They all got hurt but they all escaped by opening a portal and going through it to a lovely planet.

Little Red Riding Hood immediately got ready and set off to save Granny. She ran through the spooky forest until she tripped on a branch.

“Ow,” she thought. “This forest is scary and that hurt”.

She found a map on the door of the lair and snuck inside. She found Granny sleeping in a bed and woke her up.
