Today on 25th Sept., the GenZ in the capital of Madagascar went on a peaceful manifestation, to claim their very fundamental rights over ongoing water and power cuts. Thousands of protesters took to the streets to voice their anger over persistent power cuts, which often leave homes and businesses without electricity for over 12 hours. The population has reached a breaking point, 6h almost straight 12h of power cuts daily. Water a fundamental resource in our daily life has become scarce, only available every 3 days. Some neighbourhood never had water for years now and that started since the government under the current president Andry Rajoelina took in charge.
The freedom of speech became fantasy, because any comments or opinions expressing dissatisfaction, discontent related to the current situation will get you oppressed. Could even end up in jail.
Manifestants were only handling placard and banners but law enforcement officers (policemen and gendarmerie) squashed the manifestation with tear gas and rubber bullets. Until they shot real bullets. The very officers who are supposed to protect its people are shooting them down and taking them into custody. This is no political movement to overthrow the government or a "coup d'état".
