Trauma severely regresses your mental and emotional capacity to distinguish between love and need though.
For example you can fall "in love" with the first person who shows you kindness if you believe you don't deserve love.
You can fall "in love" with someone's presence if since childhood you've had abandonment anxiety.
You can "fall in love" with the person being around you if you've grown up a loner.
Same goes for having parental issues, living around narcissistic or druggie parents or having addiction to escapism. Or you can fall in love with a person as a person who still hasn't found themselves and when you get the help you need you realize you never were truly in love,

Of course you can actually fall in love, it's just a lot many factors override the ability to recognize that so it's better to avoid relationships when so vulnerable to getting attached quickly.
