And I’m telling you that gays are always punished as long as somebody reports them.

The death sentence is only for the act; not always enforced, but there’s always a pentalty.

As for transfolk, some ppl know that I’m trans, even amongst the gov, if the law were enforced, I’d be in a prison now alongside my sister and brother or at least not allowed in our parents’ house.

I feel like they wanted to do it everywhere.

But King Salman and his son try to normalise LGBTQ+.
But they’ll need a long time since the religion fails to normalise ascetism and polyamory (the two are LGBTQ+).

Mecca has fast food and cinemas (B4 the rest of Saudia) which are unʾĬslāmic.

The closer you are to Medina the more the religion is applied properly and more literally. But only progressive aspects like its encouragement of coexistence with sinners and learning academe, not the reactionary aspects such as polemics.

We don’t have states.

Maghreb has federative states, but the only state here is Saudi Arabia.

My goveranate is Abha.

The religion is applied more literally in the goveranate of Medina, but the whole country is equally anti-LGBTQ+ since the reason of persuction isn’t religion, as it’s only against harm, not all of its expression.
Even aces, demis, and polies are treated as ill, not just transfolk and gays.

Old things, but reflect the hatred.

Saudi Arabia allows Christians to enter the country as foreign workers for work or tourism, but does not allow them to practice their faith openly. Saudi Arabia states that they are permitted to privately practice their religion, but this is not codified and raids on private practice by the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice do occur, though these have decreased since their powers were curtailed in 2016.[14] Bringing a Bible and other types of religious texts into the country is allowed as long as it is for personal use. Although textbooks in Saudi Arabia have moderated their extremist content since 2001, they still contain some content classified as "egregious" such as characterizing Christians and other non-Muslims as liars and are considered to promote religious hatred and intolerance towards non-Muslims,[2] while the NGO Human Rights Watch has also reported rising hate speech against Christians by Saudi leaders.[16] The Saudi Arabian Mutaween (Arabic: Ł…Ų·ŁˆŲ¹ŁŠŁ†), or Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (i.e., the religious police) prohibits the public practice of any religion other than Islam.[17] Conversion of a Muslim to another religion is considered apostasy,[17] a crime punishable by death if the accused does not recant. There have been no confirmed reports of executions for either crime in modern times.[17] The government permits non-Muslim clergy to enter the country for the purpose of conducting religious services.[17] In spite of this, a 2015 study estimates that there are some 60,000 Christians with a Muslim background living in the country, though that does not mean that all of those are citizens of the country.[18]

Currently there are no official churches in Saudi Arabia.
[that's as of 2022]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_Saudi_Arabia#Persecution

Accurate religious demographics are difficult to obtain in Saudi Arabia, but there were approximately 2.1 million Christians in Saudi Arabia in 2020.

mystic bay
# slender coral <@275752202570825730> what do you think about euthyphro dilemma?

I actually think that the euthyphro dilemma is quite a powerful objection to divine command theory. It's something I've been thinking about quite a lot recently. One of my current projects is to try and show how rule-based systems of ethics turn out to be trivial, and I think the euthyphro dilemma is a good example of that.

It's a hard question, since there are many, many "intro to philosophy" textbooks, and I can't really recommend one because I have not read any of them. When you study philosophy, you typically study some particular branch of it, like metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, etc. It is much easier for me to recommend something in these specific areas. Do you already know which parts of philosophy interest you specifically?

#

If not, then you could just choose a general philosophy introduction from Amazon and it will probably be fine. But it won't go deeply into any single thing. Which in my opinion sort of defeats the purpose.

# slender coral What do you think?

Yeah I would say I started out opposing laicite but the more I read about it the more it seemed like it was only slightly overcorrective.

I would definitely say I’m closer to laicite then like US or English secularism. I think there have been excesses (burqa and face covering ban). But I do generally agree with banning religion from politics and government and government owned spaces.

I think it serves a purpose, it makes it harder (but still possible) for churches to interfere in politics. It also prevents any of the exploitation of religion for politics (Trump holding the Bible could never happen in France, neither could every president being sworn in on one).

Even in the legislature, people being laughed at for invoking religion as a justification for a law is a great thing that doesn’t really work as well for other models of secularism.

I also think sometimes traditional secularism goes so far as to elevate religion and give special protections, and sometimes just protect anything that goes on at religious institutions regardless of what it is. (Religious institutions have no transparency and don’t need to file a 990 form here, whereas a secular community center 501(c)(3) does.) Even in NYC, Mamdani is upholding an executive order banning protesting outside places of worship, ignoring that there’s West Bank land sales sparking the protests.

The 'best' character is the virtuous character. And I believe that the criterion of virtue is whether it tends towards happiness.

Like Aristotle, I think that the virtues are all moderate characteristics between two extremes. One extreme leads to frustration, and the other extreme leads to happiness unnecessarily foregone. The classic example is courage. Courage lies between the extremes of cowardice and recklessness. A coward lives a life of constant anxiety and frustration. A reckless person throws his life away for no good reason. Courage is the happy medium. I believe that this is the pattern with all the virtues.

I actually thought you've got some hope left, but you're absolutely pathetic

turbid dome
mystic bay
#

Because it doesn't take a summative or aggregative view of goodness. Goods can't be 'added up' or measured against others. There is no 'pot' of wellbeing that our actions are feeding into, nor is there an idealised 'end state' that is being optimised. The emphasis is on personal character-formation. Virtue ethics recognises that ethics is a messy business; we can't say for certain how things are going to turn out, and there may even be tragic and unresolvable dilemmas in which there is no absolutely right thing to do. So, we have to control the things we can. And that which is within my most immediate control is what sort of person I try to be.

main zephyr
mystic bay
#

That is definitely part of it. Virtue ethics is attractive because it is much less epistemically ambitious.

But it's not just an epistemic issue. It's not just that I don't know what is going to make a future state of affairs the best one possible. It's not even clear that the idea makes sense. It's like game-ifying ethics: 6 points of goodness here, 2 points of evil there . . . Reality just isn't this way.

No, I think they just have proportionally more because of countries like Algeria, to which they still have colonial ties. This means that Algerians have a lower barrier to entry into the country, visa-wise, and they already speak French as well. I stayed with a host family in the south of France, and the first thing one of the hostess did was complain about all the Algerians in her city :). That was a pretty common occurrence while I was talking to different French people.

Depends on how you look at it. I mean, the 'bell' that every country in Europe is depicting in its age demographics isn't helping retirement systems at all. Migrant workers are mostly young, and it wouldn't make sense for older folks to move to more expensive countries with their retirement funds. So, I can't imagine they would be as much of a burden as they are a help to us right now.
