There's an interesting Hadith in one of the interpretations for a verse in the Quran about making the gods one god.
The Hadith is da'if (not authentic), but it's very interesting. It says that Mohamed was with the Arab polytheists one day, they were pressuring him to answer why he swears their gods in front of his uncle, when he had enough, he answered them. The Hadith reports they were shocked by what he said. It holds no religious significance since Muslim scholars consider it inauthentic, but I think it's revealing for the first and main goal of Mohamed and his followers. Interestingly, the Ummayeds were known to be unfair to non-Arabs, even the Muslim converts.
