Well, my sense is that the English word 'moralist' has a connotation of preachiness, like someone who judges you from the perspective of a moral superior. But perhaps there is a more traditional usage of the word which simply means the same thing as 'ethicist' or 'moral philosopher'.

'Morality' is of Latin derivation (through French) whereas 'ethics' comes from Greek. The Greek concept of ethos is concerned primarily with character, rather than right action or moral rules.
