Guyz I am 18 years old, and I have a big brother named Sushil Sharma, who is 2 years older than me. He is mentally handicapped, but he wasn’t always like this. He was a normal, healthy child until the age of 3 when he contracted a disease called Japanese encephalitis. This illness caused severe brain damage, leading to the loss of his consciousness and cognitive abilities.

Since then, he has been like a toddler in a grown-up body. He can run around but doesn’t understand danger, such as the risk of being hit by a truck. He cannot feed himself, so we have to assist him with eating, and he is not toilet-trained, so we clean and care for him as you would for a baby. He doesn’t recognize what a home is or understand his surroundings.

We live in Nepal, and my parents tried treating him when he was young, but none of the treatments worked. At first, we sought help locally, but later, we also went to India in hopes of finding a solution. At the time, we didn’t even know what the disease was. Moving to another country for treatment was not an option as we were poor. This happened in 2007 AD, and since then, my brother has remained in this condition.
