It was introduced by Plato in Parmenides. Basically, the theory of form states that everything alike assumes a likeness by which they partake. So all trees are 'trees' and therefor partake of the form of the tree.

The third man argument essentially says that the form of the tree also partakes of the tree, because it is a tree, so that assumes another tree before it, which also does so, and so into infinity. I.e., infinite regress

As later authors like Gregory Vlaados noted, this is an unwarranted introduction. To demonstrate it notationally, where T1 and T2 are two different trees, and TFa is the form of the tree:

[T1, T2] = TF1,
TF1 => TF2

Yet, TF1 = TF1, hence, TF2 is not needed in the sequence. Essentailly, the form of the tree is just the form of the tree, it's only identical to itself as that, and we don't need a third man

Another example is with the form of the Good, where authors like Wittgenstein objected to the third man argument.

Essentially, if we say all that's good partake of Goodness, then the good must also be good, hence, there must be a good after it. The problem here, says Wittgenstein, is it conflates adjective with identity. "To be Good" is just to be good, while to be "the good" is to be the identification of goodness.
