That's an excellent advice, learning English via your first language will hinder your progress and performance by a mile. When you use your language to learn another language there is always gonna be that additional layer or process in which you translate between both languages, which will considerably lower your ability to communicate as it would be an intensive process to use that foreign language.

I'm sure at the beginning of your journey you'll have to translate a fair amount of vocabulary in order to be able to use the language, but at one point, I believe it's important to ditch that method and start adopting the method in which you think in English. Additionally, I believe linking words with actions and pictures helps a ton, and might be a good replacement for translation, at least at a specific level.

I usually advice people to simply dive into the language, even if they don't understand a word, over time there is what I call a solid foundation will start to form through you subconscious mind and later you'll easily get better at the language. It's similar to how we as children acquire knowledge, skills, and even the language (which I consider a skill in its own).
