A big topic I like to read about and discuss, is educational myths. I find it fascinating what ideas and concepts are believed to be true, when they in fact are not.

One of my favorites is the myth of learning styles. In general the idea is that since all people are different, we learn things in different ways. The most popular concepts of learning styles are the Visual (learn through images), Auditory (learn through listening) and Kinesthetic (learn through movement). However, more and more recent research, especially in the fields of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, is debunking these claims.

__In general there are two problems with the concept of learning styles: __

1. There is a big difference between the learning method someone prefers, and the study method that will actually lead to learning.

A parallel can be made to food. The kind of food most people prefer to eat (fat, sweet and salty foods) are not the ones that are the healthiest for us. There was a meta-analysis done in 1982 by Richard Clark which showed that there was no correlation between preferred learning style and actual learning achieved.

2. Learning styles is a categorical method, but people rarely fit into a single category.

Most cognitive differences in people are very gradual rather than nominal. We are alot more alike than we are different. The basis on which learning styles are assigned are generally inadequate and often stem from people's own preferences (what feels better).

Learning styles are based on the premise that the way in which something is organized or the way in which you think about something decides how quick or well you can learn it. The problem is that our mind doesn't work that way.
