I conceptualize groups is developing through three stages. I know there are many different paradigms for understanding group development. In the paradigm I use most, The stages are authority intimacy and play.

The first stage, the authority stage, is related to what is known in popular psychology as fight or flight.

In all of the stages, group members and the group as a whole work to reduce restraining forces. Anything that gets in the way of achieving the goals for which the group has come together.

Groups are a kind of living human system. And the definition of a living human system is important for understanding how the group dynamics function.

Characteristics of living human systems;

1. systems give and take
2. systems open and close their boundaries
3. systems stay stable and survive by integrating similarities
4. systems close boundaries to differences
5. systems change and transform by integrating differences
6. systems organize differences in two ways;
   a. integrating differences - changing from simple to more complex
   b. exclude differences - closes it's boundaries to differences that are too different
7. systems are energy organizing
8. systems are goal directed
9. systems are self correcting

Interesting. My education on group dynamics was based (in part) on the FIRO-model. But more so Susan Wheelan's theory on group dynamics as well as the DISC and Big Five models for personality traits

In contrast to your theory, Wheelan has five different stages, but they should be interpreted as 4+1

This is generally applied to groups in professional environments, but it is applicable in social groups as well to an extent.

In short, the four first stages are:

1. Dependancy and Inclusion
2. Counterdependancy and Fight
3. Trust and Structure
4. Performance and Productivity

And then you observe the group members behavior and actions to try and determine what stage the group is currently in, and try to apply the correct measures to help the group get to the next one.

The parallel to leadership here being that groups who are in the early stages require alot of guidance, direction and security. Whereas groups that are in the later stages are more self-sustaining and only require minimal intervention
