"マッチングアプリで出会った彼女は俺の教え子だった件2"
this is so fucked up but i still binged both volumes in 1 day almost
its crazy that when i read books like these there is like 1 or max 2 words per volume that i dont know lol
i feel like i should spend more time on listening and trying to get my pronunciation and output better
WTF Chihara Minori
Flx I think I get the difference between 普段 and 普通
Former means "in the past when it happened", and the latter means "according to the social norm"
Imagine this situation. You pet a cat and the owner says
この猫普段に撫でさせないのに
"even though in the past the cat didn't let strangers pet it"
You can't use 普通 because this has nothing to do with social norms
It's just a personality of the cat
Am I correct
I want to 撫で撫で the 千石 撫子
what about... 平素

and age gap
@full mauve do you prefer 年上のお姉さん or 年下の妹
honestly I like the latter. the 幼馴染 trope especially. i wonder if there's an anime where the main love interest is 幼馴染

Ok I will watch this
WTF character design by Shigure Ui
older better
btw i dont think u say toshi ue no onee san
onee san implies that she is older already
that's what Sein says in Frieren
https://youtu.be/WrUEeJdkAr0
:Anime: Sousou no Frieren, ep 13
僕は間違っていない
ig its technically not wrong but personally it feels a bit redundant
"Yes, saying 年上のお姉さんが好き can be seen as redundant in a literal sense, because the term お姉さん already implies someone older than the speaker (at least in the context of family or polite speech). However, it's not uncommon in conversational Japanese to use this phrasing to emphasize or clarify specific preferences.
Here’s a breakdown:
-
お姉さんが好き: This can simply mean "I like older sisters" or "I like women who are like older sisters," without specifically emphasizing age. It might also just be shorthand for liking someone with an older sister-like vibe.
-
年上のお姉さんが好き: By explicitly stating 年上, you’re emphasizing that it’s not just the “older sister” vibe you like, but specifically the fact that they are older than you. It adds a layer of precision, especially if you’re describing a preference for someone older in a broader sense, beyond just the familial tone of お姉さん.
When is this useful?
If you're using お姉さん metaphorically (not for an actual sibling), then adding 年上 clarifies your intent. It prevents ambiguity in contexts where お姉さん might be interpreted as just "a nice older woman" without focusing on the age gap.
Natural usage
In casual speech, 年上が好き might suffice since お姉さん already carries some nuance of "older." But if you want to sound specific or emphasize the "older" aspect, then 年上のお姉さんが好き is fine, even if slightly repetitive. It can also add a playful or exaggerated tone, depending on how it’s delivered."

@full mauve so there are lots of "villainess" isekai animes, but do you know of a game that's actually built on that kind of world?
if you don't know about the villainess genre:
the main character of the anime is a 平民, pure/innocent kinda girl, who is able to use magic. In this world, the only people who can use magic are of born into nobility, and since she's able to use magic, the nobles deemed her a noble and made her enroll into a magic high school/academy, where she meets her 攻略対象, often including the prince, his little brother, some kind knight who likes fights, a studious magic genius in glasses, etc, and all of them are イケメン of course
I want to play that kinda game
i never play otome so nope
i only play eroge
and normal vns ig
(mc male)
Do you know a romcom where the mc dates an idol
Light novel
its a common trope
Not the "school idol" like Shiina btw

@full mauve I love this
gyze
I am coming back once again, I did fall off after last time
but I've now got a duolingo super plan
because someone in my work got a family plan and added me to it, and there's a few of us here learning languages so they will be giving me a nudge to ensure I keep my streak
it is time
to become nihongo jouzu
Wb bro
When I tried duolingo, it was just showing a sentence with kanji on the screen and asked me what they mean
Without actually teaching any kanji first
And it didn't look like it starts with the more common ones
It is like that tbh but you just learn by being wrong
@quartz stream, you've reached level 49! ☄️
aka I will press a random one, and get it wrong and then see the answer and remember it for next time
Duolingo is forcing me to learn kanji, why the fuck is the kanji for the yo in yomimasu so much man
I will never understand kanji e.e
kanji is stupid
youll run into even more difficult kanji eventually
the kanji ゆううつ
憂鬱 otherwise known as this
鬱
Trace this, checkmate
time to give erik a stroke with my handwriting
mines worse lol
Agreed
It would be okay if like there was logic to it and you could work out the word from the kanji, but when it’s just random characters and you’ve got to memorise them and (I think) they change spending on the word they are in
Like bruh
Confusing
Bruh
Idk about y'all but I treat the different words as synonyms (i.e. different words) that go into the same character
That is how I try to think of them as as well, but I didn't know if it was actually accurate
@hearty socket tetrio discord has hit new lows
Amazing
Great response though, nice
I read the context around it
Lmao did bro get banned
Gits has a lot of int, and you proven it
this is the best written 憂鬱 ive seen in my life lol
thamk
a lot of kanji have meaning on them because they're just combinations of radicals and other kanji
and i do agree that kanji speeds up reading
but yeah it is a pain to learn
kanji always pain
more jp translations which i'm hopefully doing properly
id switch out from to より
also featuring id just replace with 写真集 or 特集(ik its not the same as featuring 1 to 1 but sounds a lot more normal than 登場)

also just realized it's wrong in english, it's supposed to be "by <artist>" instead of "from <artist>" lol
<artwork> by <artist>, featuring <character> from <source>
it's actually so frustrating how much better my listening is than speaking/writing
like I think my memory is bad
but then I hear anything and understand it instantly???
but I just can't form sentences
GRRRRRRRRRRRR

@full mauve there's a Japanese learner in my software dev class :o

something about ゴミ aka trash
gomi desu
Japanese is insane
I just realized 今さらcomes from 更
And I finally realized why I find Japanese so charming
I think it feels like if toki pona had 2000 words instead of the 140ish
a place to collect bags with ash
the volcano errupts so often that they have a designated ash collection system
randomly ended up riding from here lol

ay better than nothing
i made a ton of pics of stuff i had trouble fully reading lol
@full mauve does shadowing work
idk lol
I'm making it, I'm starting to get pure japanese channels on my recommended
and I'm just watching them and understand quite a bit, it feels good
Aureiller
nuenweh
I hit a 30 day learning streak on Duolingo
Tbf people shit on Duolingo but I do think it does work
Probably not as efficient as other days but I’m definitely learning a lot
Definitely a good place to start
Grind never stops
Fr
It's acceptable as a secondary tool for learning
But imo just use anki
I agree but for now I’m going just use Duolingo since for me the way it’s gamified helps me commit
I’ll switch to anki at some point down the line
with jidoujisho/yomitan, you automatically get words into the deck as you read books
which is nice
Fair enough
i immersed in メイド喫茶 today💀
What the hell
Meanwhile the only immersion I have is watching anime and reading 歴史に残る悪女になるぞ
not bad either 😳
I still don't have anki

Flx do you know the "Blade dance" song on osu
The anime of that song is actually really good lmao
Low budget but very wholesome and cute
it comes from an anime? :o
Yeah, called "seireitsukai no blade dance"
yeah it's decent
I told you to watch it for the cute girls like a year ago
My memory is really hazy right now, but I may have watched it when you recommended it to me
I feel a deja vu right now
Now that I’m really getting into studying Japanese and have been doing it for a while it’s getting really fun
It’s so satisfying just like… knowing stuff
It’s kind of cringe but I’ve been like having full on conversations to myself in Japanese just to try and practice
Sort of like simulating scenarios in my head
I think one bad side of Duolingo is it doesn’t really explain grammar that well, such as when to use “wa” or “no” (although I did learn from this chat that wa often is for identifying the subject)
But sometimes that can be a bit confusing for me
And Duolingo just doesn’t explain it at all
i just studied grammar from immersion lol
900円😭
卵かけご飯 is shortened to TKG btw lol
How to anki
What about ふりかけご飯
smash
didnt see that being 略d
Is “no” used when something belongs to someone?
I see it mainly coming after people in sentences
It's closer to "of" in English, but yes you can indicate possession with it
It's more wide though. For example, you can use it to specify smth. きょうだい の リアム means "the Liam of Kyoto university"
Or でんせつ の 3にん to mean "the legendary three"
Yk, from naruto?
Yeah I guess that's just what it is. Even when you specify someone's belongings, it's pretty much the same idea
Ahhhh right I see
I think I'm a bad teacher for writing those long texts 😭
I just feel like I often go into details when not prompted
Oh
my brain shitting out the mandarin pronunciation
@full mauve any 悪役令嬢ranobe not isekai/tensei/time leap, where the mc has a character progression arc over the course of the novel
Would be cool if tragedy where she gets beheaded despite changing as a person
My gf on the left
Flx I use my tablet with windows ink and yomitan highlights everything my cursor hover over
Any tips
@full mauve how do I make jidoujisho work with anki?
It just says that it has an error
Ok it works now
short hair >

Flx do you know of any light novels about living with a JK where the mc is a young adult

japanese learning still going strong 💪
I do think I need to recover all my characters at some point, since I do feel as I'm kind of skipping them which definitely isn't good
but 41 days duolingo streak so far, and I'm getting through and understanding more for sure
just been having like mock conversations with myself lol to practice
this is embarassing, it's been a few years to be fair but I can't even remember all the main basic hiragana 😦
dunno if it's any good, but this is the guide I've been following to learn japanese other than duolingo https://www.tofugu.com/learn-japanese/
A list of all the resources we recommend most for learning Japanese

I'm "learning" Japanese since 2018
I've just been ignoring them because I can still learn it without them but it's getting slightly inconvenient now
I had like a month 2 years ago where I went pretty hard on learning it and learned all the hiragana + had lets of immersion from anime but then I left it until now
so now I've got to relearn them lol
luckily I think I'm already further in terms of just speaking it though, as in I know a lot more... just in romaji form lol
You're better than me I bet
absolutely not
I've seen you typing in full Japanese, you're way better than me lol
I speak like a 1 year old baby who just learned how to say their first words
I typed because I have a dictionary that translates romaji for me
oh that's cool, I should get that
is it yomitan?
it doesn't really work well for me from what I've seen
I think for now I'm going to learn all the hiragana and katakana, and then I'll try pick up some kanji at some other point
Voice typing is one option but it's not super reliable
こうして出来るよ
時間かかるけど
ネットも必要だし
別の方法はいたら凄く助かる
おねがいします!!!
@full mauve
flick is the best option
its by far the fastest way to type mobile japanese
i switched from romaji keyboard to flick 3 months ago and im already same speed on flick as i was on romaji now
NICE
oops caps
I was asking on how to pick the correct kanji when typing if you can't read yet
just convert ?
whats the issue
how is that taking time lol
u need to press one thing on ur screen
it's so weird listening to japanese songs I used to listen to all the time, and like, actually understanding them
especially when they're clearly songs with deep meanings
I don't know what they mean and use Google translate each time
real

i remember listening to this so often in osu before studying japanese that i still sometimes hear my made up lyrics instead of the actual lyrics
I still hear the voices in my head
i think i spent way too much time immersing in song lyrics
shouldve studied speaking more XD
Should I study speaking before I can read
(I immerse with light novel)
I basically practice every but reading lol
like I just fully learn in romaji and then just figured I can just convert to hiragana and kanji n stuff anyway when I want to write online
The main character is an ojou sama type and her ですわ speech pattern is a bit irritating
if its fun for you sure
i only started studying output cuz of my japan trips lol
i still feel like im wasting my time studying a language just for a few vacations but fuck it im doing korean now for 3 kdramas i like shikatanai
He doesn't know more Japanese than I do, but
Mf knows Chinese
His reading is 上上上
yea knowing jp and reading chinese is also a lifehack lol
does it actually help? I swear the characters are different
The ones that overlap definitely help
like I look at chinese characters and it doesn't look like japanese at all to me
I could tell the different instantly
it helps a lot
Cuz no hiragana
ye cuz its prolly simplified
not traditional
jp uses mainly traditional characters
nowadays a lot of simplified too tho
你是我全部 like this simplified sentence is so easy if u know jp
oh yeah that looks japanese
目 => 眼睛
Very simplified
波 濤
桜 櫻
部 I recognise the b in this kanji as being part of the kanji for kyoto lol
u can clearly tell the diff between simplfied and traditional lol
yeah
i think i know this from first storm
lyrics
LOL
yep
Hi i am 片言 noob
💀
I'm not gonna like, I can't differentiate kanji at all
別 and 剣 look like the same "person holding long stick" thing
sometimes im amazed at my memory and then i forget the most easy simple stuff on this planet and hate myself again
Nvm
I really struggle with individual kanji, for example if you gave me a full word I would probably remember it, but if it was just one of the kanji on it's own my brain doesn't recognise it
the more kanji u learn the better ull get at that
it's really frustrating
context is always helpful
I speak Baby japanese but its pretty OK for me in Japan
i think kanji help with singled out words tho
Its enough for Most Things

部屋 = room
Today i Spoke With an eldery Woman lmfao
its like a picture (kanji) is tied to that word in my brain
ママ!おちっこおちっこ!
with korean i struggle a lot more remembering singled out words
I'm starting to recognise more kanji more often though, I'm picking up some basics just from like listening to music lyrics and associating the words and things lol
乙
Today i saw some pair in Kimono and i asked an old Woman If it was kekkon 💀
Was she 109 years old
And it was
いいね
No Like 60 idk
indeed
I know this kanji from 乙女
i kinda reached all my goals with reading already so for me now only speaking and listening is interesting tbh
thats also why i lost interest in vns ig
I'm going to remember all the hiragana and then do my studying in that from now on since I've been doing romaji
imma have to see if theres a korean patch for summer pockets 💀
Noob
ye just do hiragana and then roll with it
Otome
u can treat katakana like kanji even
yeah, and then I'll just pick up little bits of kanji as I go about
i just did hiragana speedrun when i started jp and then treated all kanji and katakana like words ill learn on the way
yeah
I learned the main hiragana in a day last time and then like half the dakuten ones
https://kana-quiz.tofugu.com/ I'm using this quiz and just going through them all over and over again
Practice hiragana and katakana online with Tofugu’s free app. Type romaji for the kana you know.
until I remember them
I may be stupid but when I see カ I think 方 and vice versa
idk how long it took me but i think it was like a 2 or 3 days of casual studying till I memorized them all
I only differentiate from context
yeah that sounds about right
You memorized katakana???
hiragana will already open a new world for jp learning so its really worth
definitely
Me too
yea that will change over time dw
its normal
and then I can put my duolingo in hiragana mode so it doesn't give romaji which will force me to remember it
i think i suck more at reading katakana than kanji now ngl
katakana are so fking disgusting and ugly
i wish japanese just replaced them with hangul
the only katakana I know is ka 😎
I dont even know hiragana fuck
カ 力 💀
I am cooked in Japan
What's a yosugara
Night Thrush
What's a thrush
It's a kind of bird?
no my oshi idol group
i went to their ライブ in jp
and am mapping my 2nd song from them in osu atm 💀
i never finish maps usually but theyre too goood
matoi chan was literally 10cm infront of me lol
i was like 3rd floor but during the song she went like up to the third floor and walked through the first row while singing and i had a first row seat 💀
ill never get so close to an idol ever again
Kanji pmo fr bro there is NO need for it to be so many strokes
I think it’s pretty good, obviously not on its own though
Idk i only played vns and anki
People hate on it too much, but the fact of the matter is, it is the only reason I’m consistent with learning Japanese
That’s fair
I think most people like me would struggle to be consistent learning a language if they were to jump straight into using a tool like anki
And it’s quite boring
Whereas Duolingo is just fun
Ah okay
Yeah
日 = sun
日 = day
I guess it just depends on what it is attached to??
yes all kanji have multiple readings
damn kanji is so annoying grrrrrr
in general, they have one for when they're alone and a different one for when they're part of a word with multiple kanji
right
but they can have multiple for each situation depending on the kanji and words
okay fun times, guess I will have to just figure it out over time
I'm not in a rush to learn kanji anyway
it's less important to me
I just want to learn the language first
sunday is a funny one cuz both day and sun use the same kanji
also funny how english and japanese both use the sun for sunday
bruhge
monday is moon day in japanese
i wonder if that's where the english monday comes from

Bro kanji are so cool
I was going to say it's just a coincidence but I don't even know anymore
Japanese weekdays come from ancient Chinese, which took them from Persian, and the Persians took it from the Jews. So it's possible at the very least
And idk how reliable the sources were anyway
If the Jewish -> Persian -> Chinese -> Japanese thing is correct, then yes, they both come from Sumeria, the earliest known civilization

to read? yes
to write? no
writing kanji is so boring
Its the Same in German lool
Why 4 different for same word
they mean fast but in different ways
早い is early
速い is quickly
not sure about the others
a lot of words are like this, depending on the details they use different kanji
I agree, it’s cool but I hate it lol
@abstract mist quick tip that helps me remember the difference, the radical 辶 is related to motion/direction, hence 速 is "quickly"
kanji in words like 道 (みち, road) and 近い (ちかい, near) have this radical
進む (すすむ, to go ahead) as well
I find it interesting watching anime with subtitles now, because I can’t help but translating it myself and then noticing how they translated it differently and it’s weird, like I don’t think either is wrong it’s just… different
It’s throwing me off lol
Subs are often not 1:1 translated to make it easier to understand without the cultural context required
Yeah, I’m noticing that now
Particularly in situations where a sort of context based phrase is used
@full mauve I wanna start a student role grind, but for real this time. Any tips?
Literally what I do
Can't even access the server
ye
😭
i can give u a role so u can actually see book sharing without student if u want
time to read then ig
if u hate reading even just watching stuff with sub and reading along helps
yea
@full mauve, you've reached level 61! ☄️
im doing the same with korean atm and the gains are pretty good
yea music is also good if u read lyrics
esp good for studying some more uncommon words and kanji
110%
burnt the kitchen
okay I understand the appeal of reading now
I'm able to test my knowledge, learn new vocabulary and learn new hiragana/kanji
all at the same time
very cool
I always get so excited when I translated something correctly
I'm using a website called satorireader, it seems pretty good
gives lots of books and gives the options to use certain characters, read it out loud and gives you the meaning if you want to check as well which is nice
although I keep finding myself just listening to it which is kind of cheating lol
kind of defeats the point of reading 💀
I get what you're saying but as long as you can see the text while it's read, especially if the current word is highlighted, you'll improve
Yeah that is true
It’s definitely better than nothing
And like I do read the sentence at the same time
So fair
@flx I was trynna think of a word in Kazakh and I came up with one, but then I was like
Nah this means "move" but in 移動する kinda sense, not as in "move this somewhere else"
Is this normal

idk i dont think with an inner voice usually
😭
only when i dream ig
when i dream i sometimes dream in en/ger/jp
Do tsukai? To me that sounds like “going out”
As in dating
Could be wrong though, maybe ask flx sensei
Tsukiai
Adding o at the beginning makes it sound polite
Yeah I know I think my phone just like autocorrected me or I typed it wrong
The meaning still applies as that is how I understood it from the video anyway lol
What I really wanted to know is the difference between ど付き合いand お付き合い
I'm not sure tbh
@full mauve help us
never heard dotsukiai
oh its not this
どつく
phone ime sucks
this
basically its a joke
i dont go out with anybody but im having a boxing match with tbis other vtuber

Wow
@full mauve whenever the police in anime arrest someone, they say おとなしく. Do they mean "otona shiku" as in "like an adult", or do they mean "oto nashi ku" as in "with no sound"?
大人しく
Daininshiku
"oto nashi ku" as in "with no sound"? isnt a thing btw
oh
I've always understood otona shiku as come quietly
man it's so weird watching videos of japan now and like just understanding what the people are saying
I'd like to travel to japan, just to test my knowledge, I'm watching ludwig travel japan and it's so cool how he's able to communicare with such little japanese, it makes me interested how well I would do
I'm starting to have a weird phenomon where like
I understand a sentence, but I can't translate it into english
but like I understand it
idk if that's a good thing or not
I think it's more of an english skill issue tbh, I've been forgetting lots of basic words recently since I've been so immersed in japanese tbh
nah its normal
especially since japanese just has a lot of stuff that cant be 1 to 1 translated
translating is a skill in itself
i felt like i sucked even when i was like n2 lol
(2023)
even now that im n1+ there was like one or two times i struggled a bit
but 99% of convos went pretty smooth
i got jouzud like 3 times only 💀
We don't really think in words
We all think in concepts
So it's ok if you can't translate at first
A word in one language can be translated to another, but it's often not an exact 1:1 translation
yea thats why bilingual dicts are just a help to get started really
There's almost always some nuance that forces you to choose between several synonyms
try to switch to mono as soon as you can
If you're just starting out, you'll struggle because translation can really only be done while considering context
And it's just difficult
E.g. "sumimasen" can also mean "thank you"
It's easier to just hear Japanese and understand it, but difficult to choose between "sorry" and "thank you"
can also mean excuse me lol
I didn't know it could be read as sorry though, I always thought it was just excuse me and thank you
isn't sorry gomenasai
You see, "sorry" is an approximate translation
They're both
interesting
but it's weird like, while speaking japanese you would just understand it
That’s fair
That’s how I am any time the conversation goes out my scope lol
In my experience, the moment you think you're good is the moment you stop improving
yea cuz u wont be motivated anymore
ive done barely any reading the last 6 months in japanese cuz its just boring now
i could improve still obviously but i feel like im already good enough so i dont have the motivation to improve
🔪
probably, I feel like I will never feel good enough tbh
until I can turn off my brain and speak japanese I will never feel fluent
The definition of success varies from person to person
Even when it comes to twitch streaming. Not everyone comes to get a thousand viewers, there's plenty of people looking to stream with like 10 usual visitors and form a small tight nit community instead
yeah that's true tbf
everybody has different goals
idk what my goal is tbh
I don't have a plan for my japanese, I just want to be able to speak it because I think it's cool
I guess the level I would be happy at is if I could watch anime, listen to songs and talk to people during daily conversations comfortably
exactly
and they change over time as well
yeah that's what I expect to happen to me tbh
for now I'm just learning it because I know something will come up one day where I'll be so happy I decided to study it
like there has already been times when I've been like "damn Io wish I knew japanese"
so something else will come up I'm sure
yea studying a language is never a bad way to spend your time
for sure
I lowkey think I need to stop watching anime with subtitles, it's starting to confuse me sometimes icl
with english subs that is, I think I will swap to jp
yeah that's fair
I too don't really have any goals, I just think Japanese sounds cool. I want to eventually sound like a ronin from the edo jidai
it's like my second favourite romance tbh
I ended up dropping that tbh
Ririsa is very cool
and then it got too long for me to want to catch up 😭
when I'm watching anime I can understand the sentences basically all the time, but the second something specific, like an ability name for example, is said I just can't figure out what it is for the life of me
I guess that makes sense though, since I can just think of the ability in its japanese name instead
The moment people start to discuss more difficult topics such as politics, human relationships, projects, etc, I fall apart too
yeah same
@full mauve
この漫画のヒロイン黒川さんは友達のためにノートを書いた。勝手にやったことなのに何でこのチェリ坊やは責任感を感じるの?普通なら、別の人の行動は自分の責任にならないよね?
"I made her push herself so hard"
Also tell me if I'm getting more jouzu at Japanese
Also tell me if your eyes hurt by reading it
He will definitely say that my Japanese is cringe
😭
I learned it from anime after all dattebayo
Im not reading english manga 😠
ur jp is getting good tho
It's a translated Japanese manga
Please explain why he feels responsible for her actions
He didn't do anything to provoke it
No reply:(
idk
im not the author
😭
I keep reading words such as "hate" and "sake" in romaji instead of English words
@abstract mist translate the funny for me
This video explains it very well
https://youtu.be/85e4THVEb_o?si=
😭
I need to learn to turn off the English in my mind when immersing, I keep getting distracted with trying to translate instead of purely understanding
バカ、これほどまでに日本人を傷つけ、また癒してきた言葉は他に見当たらない。バカに笑い、傷つき、喜び、または涙し…。落語における与太郎然り、お笑いにおける「ボケ」然り、バカは我々の生活の中にはなくてはならないものとなっている。
バカを...
April fool's in Japanese
@full mauve stupid app forgot my book again
RIP
Sounds like a fun title
What is that, like the world’s strongest demon lord in another with 10 kids?
Is that what it roughly translates to
I’m not sure what the last word is
Sounds like I’d unironically enjoy it tbh
The wife of the strongest demon lord
oh
Naru is the root
To become
Nacchaimashita is like
"unexpectedly became"
Or like unintentionally
It's like shimau
To help manage his recently deceased grandmother's effects, the protagonist Takahara Hairi travels to Torishirojima during his summer vacation.
As he gets off the ferry boat, he spots a lone girl standing on the pier.
A girl who simply gazes into the distance as her long hair flutters in the wind.
He looks at the girl in utter bewilderment, b...
@full mauve will you watch
Ok I just remembered
I had a nightmare where I said すれる instead of できる
maybe but prolly no
im replaying summer pockets atm in chinese
lmao
Okay ignore me mixing up sono and sore but this is really cool, the further you get into Duolingo the more useful it actually starts to become
Like it’s not just a click the words game, they also have these ones where you are forced to type it instead
I like that a lot
Why is it the character for wo when it is o??????
This is much harder but so much better tbh, like I’m getting the translation right every time because I know what they would be in romaji, but typing it is so different
Yeah that’s really cool man, so much fun
because you only say "o" when you speak or read, but its written as wo
its the same thing with ha kinda, which you also read or speak as "wa"
Yeah I know but I don’t really understand why
It makes no sense
I guess there’s no logic to it
That’s just how it is
fair enough
it's very simple, because they actually used to be pronounced ha and wo
their pronunciation just evolved over time
(kinda like how the K in "knife" became silent over time)
@dusky carbon @violet olive idk where to post
huh that's so interesting
makes sense actually
fair enough

man it's so weird like
all of a sudden being able to undestand japanese, like I was playing OW and I was like huh I can actually understand kirikos lines fully
it was a bit surreal tbh
this being in nihongo is hilarious
thanks for maggi asam laksa
Actually understanding Japanese is so cool for comedy anime
I'm watching Kaguya-sama rn
In one episode, Fujiwara wants to make the president say "chin-chin"
Kaguya interferes, and Fujiwara finally breaks
もう、私会長にちんちん出して欲しのに!
She means 言い出して, but president doesn't know that. What he hears is "I just want president to pull out his dick". President runs away and calls them perverts
This kind of thing doesn't do well with subtitles
@quartz stream do you get it
ahahaha yeah
I never noticed that before, maybe I should rewatch kaguya-sama without subtitles
I'm sorry flx
I'm terrible
I'm the worst
I don't learn Japanese at all
I'm just pretending
I'm sure you must be studying to some extent lol
chat I've decided recently to go throttle into studying japanese, I've decided I'm going to work here in england for a couple more years just so I'm in a comfortable position, and then I'm going to go for it and try get on the JET program
and hopefully by then my japanese should be good enough where I'm almost guaranteed a spot
bruh
I just got an ad, but it actually looks good
(they used violet evergarden to lure me in)
that is really cool though
and it was done by dogen, and I feel like he wouldn't take a sponsor unless he thought it was actually good
might take a look
migaku is such a scam
it costs a fk ton and u can get literally all of it and even better with yomitan
Introducing Japanese learning methods and tools, in particular those important in regards to using Japanese media to learn the language.
??
ive been going all out on chinese for like 2 weeks now
chinese is so fking fun its crazy
korean is so boring in comparison
throwing shade at migaku
yea its a rip off
but if u have infinite money and r lazy ig its worth it
Fair, just wouldn’t expect dogen to promote something bad
well
it works
but its way too expensive and u can get it for free literally
if it cost like 1/4th of the current price i think it'd be a fair price
like im not about to sell ppl my yomitan tutorial for 120 USD
thats matt vs japan stuff
Dogen gets paid to promote things
Yeah but I don’t think he’d promote something he thought was bad, especially when teaching Japanese is his thing
1st of all
Hahahahaha imagine good ads on youtube
2nd of all it's not a "bad" product, it's just mid
Fair
3rd of all being good at Japanese doesn't necessarily mean you're caught up with the most recent softwares
I guess
He learned it like 10 years ago
True
Fair enough
this
its not a scam i guess
but its just not worth it for the money youre spending
like u can even get pitch colored cards for free with anki and lapis
anki can do everything migaku can + more
just takes a moment to setup
I'm pretty sure he learned Japanese before yomichan was even a thing
Lol
Fair
no wtf

Still waiting for the day flx takes in a japanese jk
Liam probably doesn't get it
手を離せ can mean two things
"Get your hands off me"
Or "let go of the hand"
In this case it's both
@full mauve would you date a Japanese idol despite the social pressure not to?

no
i dont want a famous person as my gf prolly
also im full china max atm so no dating japanese anymore

間違いばかりの今日をまず愛 そうか
ああ 理想だ
also nice double meaning
(ありそうだ)

Bruh I’ve been using this app called hello talk to practice my Japanese with actual Japanese people and it’s helping so much
Just like forcing me to use all my knowledge in specific situations and search up what I don’t know so I do for next time
I think you should give this "discord" app a try as well
use flick
hellotalk is fun but also make sure to call eventually
to practice speaking and listening
@full mauve grooming: the light novel 💀
Wtf did I just read
Welcome to Japan
The linguistic lore must be immaculate
ok
i hit optimize fsrs on anki and now it's sending my cards into the stratosphere

i'll just trust algorithm-sama
RIP
I still need to get on the anki game
I'm very lazily just sticking to duolingo rn
which I know is not good

flx cn better than mine at this point
hear u speak cn when 😔
YAYYY
found dis
Holy accent lolol
你听不懂吗
真的可惜
虽然我发音其实还不太标准但中国朋友都听得懂我说的 (除了北方人)
中文真的牛批
ill go to like singapore, vietnam, hongkong and shenzhen next year so ill have to be at least decent until then
holy shit
他当然听不懂啊
- you dont need any basic mandarin to survive singapore, all you'll do is impress the locals or have them think you're from the mainland with that accent (cus singaporeans do NOT speak like that)
- hongkong sucks at speaking mandarin, but learning how to read cn will definitely help. if you wanna speak mandarin its a hit or miss cus some of them really suck at it. if you think you can learn some canto by next year, pls do you'll save them a lot of trouble.
- people in shenzhen will go WAOO
northern can go fuck themselves
i had a substitute teacher from beijing once and he made my life a living hell like mf did that shi on purpose
real

粤语 is like above my pay grade
😭
mf chose like all the places that speak other languages and dialects

you'd be flexing on these people
maybe after i speak good 普通话

im watching random ass chinese drama atm
东宫 goated af tho ngl
the accent alone would have them falling to their knees

you mean canto accent ?
i feel like canto is low key impossible
4 tones is already difficult enough
