For galaxies I usually aim for 2:1:1:1 or 3:1:1:1

For LRGB

Otherwise just get a ton of RGB if you're not going to have L carry the data.

However much L you need for the target to start looking good than just get half of that in RGB.

Other projects I have for example 24h lum to 8ea RGB. But it's not like you need to follow somebody's formula. If you have 5 hours of lum, stack it up and see how it looks. Adjust to your own preferences.
