i plan on releasing epasode 0 on how to read diagrams
i meant k != 0 im a dumbass
I would vote for the glorious Ritchey–Chrétien, but I think there is an opportunity to do something unique with that one (explain why the different conic constants are needed to cancel coma)
perhaps that could be explained along with the Dall-Kirkham
yup
thats why i havent added the rct yet
it will be complex
i need to script these
I feel like there may be some satisfying derivation of the formula, but I can't envision it in my head atm
instead of taking 1 min breaks between each thought
there were 50 jump cuts in that video btw

And I’m already thinking of selling the heritage
I decided to not buy the 130pds. I’m going mono instead
yeah its not idal if you want to do photography
great for visual though
Yea I don’t do much visual… like at all. So I’m just gonna sell it

i recently re listened to the album painkiller again after not listening for a while on a record player and it sounded deeply scrumptious
Painkiller is the twelfth studio album by English heavy metal band Judas Priest, released on 17 September 1990 in Europe and on and 18 September in the United States. The album was released following the band's highly publicised 1990 subliminal messages trial earlier that year, in which frontman Rob Halford and the band were cleared of civil cha...

As a Touptek ATR533M owner... it's worth skipping a meal over tbh
@urban quiver I can also recommend camera settings for you
cool dm me them pls
Isn’t there different modes? Like some weird dynamic range specific mode?
I use high full well, high conversion gain, low noise (ultra) mode, gain 200, offset 256, and that gets me unity gain and very low noise
NINA?
Yup
I just picked those settings after doing some camera tests for unity gain and just using the graphs for finding minimum noise
Do you use the bundle’s EFW and filters?
How are they
Yeah I got it as a bundle. I can't make any specific comparisons between filters for mono cameras, but I will say the OSC > mono switch is astounding especially when you get to narrowband targets
Do you get any halos? I’ve heard Oiii will halo a bit
Not anything that's caught my attention. But I haven't imaged, say, the Flame Nebula to really test it
Wasn't unity gain 100? Also why such high offset?
Not for the ATR533M in HCG/HFW/LN mode. I did the sensor analysis myself with Poisson noise.
You do not want to run the camera at gain 100 in that mode; the well fills before the sensor saturates
I'm sure I could lower the offset, it's just the default value
It's still half that of a DSLR

do mirrors even reflect it
yup
you act like i dont do wayy too much research
is that like the opposite of SWIR?
it goes
SWIR
MWIR
LWIR
ig you can add NIR to the beginning of that (and far infrared at the end)
SWIR and MWIR sensors use the photoelectric effect to "see" while i think some LWIR sensors are essentially just a matrix of tiny thermocouples lmao
dont quote me on that though, might be totally wrong 💀 but however it works, thermal cameras fall into the LWIR range (looked it up, yes, they use "microbolometers", so not traditional sensors. a small part of it heats up and it causes a change in electrical resistance. its a thermocouple. so you dont need cryogenic cooling like you would with with a sensor that uses the photoelectric effect at those wavelengths)
the atmosphere becomes opaque at wavelengths that long though
i didnt remember the transmittance picks back up that fast (at the 8um mark)
but theres a huge gap there from 5-8 in the middle of the infrared spectrum (disregarding very far infrared)
they dont
gold does
but not normal aluminised mirrors
or wait
lwir
not mwir
nbm
nvm

this sensor architecture makes me think its gonna have like laughably low QE
thats just a blind guess though
It goes NUV VIS NIR SWIR MWIR LWIR FIR
from shortest to longest
tried to look up info on its sensitivity, but its uhh complicated
however i found this
so basically your background is brighter than most anything in the night sky, and it varies a lot even during a second
also its not even consistent across the sky. so you have like a complex bright light pollution gradient that fluctuates very quickly across the entire sky, in AP terms, lol. that is, if im understanding this correctly
i know
she knows
i will even have to deal with my mirrors heat getting picked up
luckily for that i can slap the dust cover on and get pseudo darks to remove that
tbh if i can just get the orion nebula i will be happy
sensitivity limit of -2.8mag on a 1.52m mirror 😭 i have to be reading this wrong
uhh
i do not think that is right
im sorry to say
they had a 1.52m mirror as i said
and they were able to detect 1 single object at 11um with a microbolometer (EDIT: 10 objects of 13 candidates. even the star vega is too dim to see with this system)
ok yeah the -2.8 had to be something else, this carbon star has a magnitude of 7.7
so basically their system is able to detect the very brightest carbon stars in the sky

i mean tbh itd be cool as hell to detect them still, thats something
here is the detection
they did this "chopping and nodding" routine, i didnt read too far how it works
i see
but it allows you to remove any spatial and temporal variability from the sky background
ohh
its here if you want to read more
i think thats sorta like how planetary works?
interesting read tbh i kind of wanna look more into it but i gtg now
yk how you take the bests parts of each video and mash them together
uhh kinda, there youre trying to catch glimpses of good seeing in select frames/parts of a frame
but instead of seeing its for heat pollution
here its more like you get 2 stacks with ""bad seeing"" and you can substract away anything that changed between them
that or im totally misunderstanding this, which is more likely
oh yea
oooh
ohh they tilt the secondary quickly to basically get 2 pictures that are at on and off axis so you can just get the target
then they go to a diff pos and get rid of the exess left behind
yeah and you have to do that within like a minute because the temperature change of the telescope will mess it up otherwise
🤣
i can luckily to do the second part i can just disengage and manually slew
mm yeah maybe
what i can also do is try drift scanning
i mean if you manage to detect any infrared source, hats off man
the sensor i plan on getting has a max exposure of 4 seconds
cool project in anycase tho
maybe you can do some funny terrestrial observations if the sky is too bright to detect anything
oh also, you cant use any glass elements but you probably already knew that
gotta be like germanium lenses or some even funkier stuff. but best to just rely on only reflective elements
ik about germanium lenses yea

finland!!!
also quantum dots are sick, didntt know theyd be able to be used here too
but! i thought quantum dots only did down-conversion
this is nuts!!
i wonder if this is what they used for those infrared sensing glasses/contacts
ok now i NEED one
they use a material that knocks the ir light into the visible light
but in the process you loose a lot of resolution
so everything becomes fuzzy in ir
visible light gets less effected
no wonder the atmos is so bad for ir
like 99% absorbtion from the water
yeah i think thats the reason for the 5-8um gap
but the other big issue is thermal currents
water vapour is the main issue for any ir imaging
yeah but arent there gaps that water doesnt absorb?
oh ur talking about that gap
ohhh i thought you meant the 5-8 gap
as in 5-8 gap in transmission
i mean i was here
but 3-4 and 8-13 are pretty good
8-13 you hit the thermal current issues though
lwir moment

oo cool
yea sure
is this with an astrocam?
yup
mmm, you dont happen to have 2?
even a dslr + astrocam might work, just 2 cameras that can take (ir) filters
2 cams or 2 filters?
both
i have 2
attach them to like a dovetail, different ir filters on each and use nina or something to trigger exposures on both at the same time
then try your best to overlay them in post
why am i doing this may i asl
2 color ir camera!!!
this is RGBI
i tried to map them like this
it was a pain to take 2 images from the same perspective and overlay them correctly though, had to swap the filter and i didnt have a tripod (used eq mount, hence the weird ass framing, lol)
Would it be feasible to try astrophotography with this camera
dont see why not
could just throw 2 different ir pass filters into a filter wheel atp though
I'd love to get 700-800 and 800-900 IR pass filters to complement RGB
Perhaps I can just get Sloan i' and z' filters for that purpose
yeah
i wanna do more with even just my 685 pass, ive only done 1 astro image with it
do i buy a lwir sensor

pne fall under emission nebula

have you ever looked at a pne before
yeah
with your own eyes through a scope
and you say you dont prefer pne
yeah cuz i also care abt imaging
tf fl r u using
250mm and 750mm
ah
emission nebulae have fun structures at literally any FL tho, PN are more limited to high FL (or ultra deep exposure in the case of old PNs)
PN are better through visual scopes, but you can still see emission nebulae visually and emission nebulae or more accessable to literally any FL
so I think emission nebylae are a better target overall
visually yes
yet to see galaxies visually through a scope

kstars is very annoying
no yeah minipc saves so much time and sleep
also if you reccomend a mini pc, which one
this is one of the main things that I prioritize in asto
any 2nd hand one would work, i personally got the mele 4c quieter, but from what ive heard, fans dont disrupt that much so it could be worth getting one w fans for slight increase in performance
I dont really care too much about preformance, I just want ease of use, also my budget is around 200-250
or actually on 2nd thought i think its windows thats just SO slow sometimes
thats plentyyyyyyy for a minipc, i got mine new for like 150 usd
idk about these days w the ram prices lol
@woeful rose this mfer keeps getting free minipcs and RAM sticks somehow
I've gotten the beelink s12 mini. Works great. Upgraded it with some free storage. It has 16 gb ram and 1tb storage now lol
I have 2 480GB and a 60 gb SSD laying around. Also 2x 8 gb sodimm ram. And imma get another free laptop and maybe a pro desk for parts.
what about the pro
Yeah I think it's the pro. You need w11 pro to do remote desktop.
It draws at best 36 watts so for remote imaging it's not bad at all
how would I use a minipc and not do remote imaging
Idk.i don't know
dont you use a s12?
Yes on my Redcat rig. On my newt I just use a elite ook 😭
😭
so you do remote on your redcat?
I mean if u mean remote like the cat goes outside and I'm going inside to my PC then yes.
why cant I do it with the s12
(do not pay for w11 pro)
if you've got home, then you can use chrome remote desktop
That's fine to use.
You may can. Idk the difference between the pro and not pro. Maybe it's storage and ram and maybe a n150 instead of n100? Idk

585, so 11.2x6.3
its one of the best tbh in terms of readnoise and qe when sensor size does not matter
what is?
the 585
oh yeah
not counting the 462 read noise
read noise is pretty much irrelevant for long exposure AP, so you're just looking for QE
are you choosing between reducers?
at 3nm it prolly affects more than broad band but its prolly still negligable
its f/4 vs f/5 and 1x vs .95
if you're strectly going for PNs, all that matters is the aperture, the QE, and the sharpness of the optics
assuming you have enough FL to not be undersampled
and slower optics are usually sharper
because your the expert, is a stellalyra 4.5 + nexus a bad idea, i dont really care about the collimation standards and I know it will be able to focus
your image circle is getting nuked
its got an oversized secondary and im using a 585
yeah with the 585 it's no problem, but it will be too small for apsc, and probably noticeable at 1" square like a 533
with the reducer or just native?
with the reducer
yea, so im fine, I have no intentions of upgrading my sensor

What should be the focal length and focal ratio of my zoomed in rig for planetary nebulae (this is seperate from the plan for the nexus which is going to be for a differnt scope) *note, I can use 3nm with f/5 and f/4.8, but I need to use 4.5nm for f/4-3.7

If it's a good comet like G3 it's better
Transients always beat non-transients IMO
4 hours of OSC vs RGB mono (1.3hrs of each filter)
ok but please cc the OSC for a fair competetion
I tried but it turned so blue 😭 😭 Either way, it's clearly more noisy
ah fair enough

Isn't f/3.7 a little fast for 2.5nm?
the antila is shifted a bit afaik
I cant find a 3nm that will comfortably fit in it
I thought they should be shifted to the left? I guess not
3nm also does not have a flat top
Goofy
yea, so it between spending 1k for 97 percent transmission 2.5nm, or 400 bucks for 90 percent 4.5nm
2.5nm will cut the LP by 44% tho
Have you ever brought your computer out and realized you needed to install software?

Yes
bortle 7 btw
you will need slightly more than half the time to get the same SNR with 2.5nm as with 4.5nm
I mean it does fit with my intrests of really dim pne but it hella expensive
even when you account for the 7 percent more transmission?
oh yeah that makes it close to half the time
it makes your rig a whole stop faster for just 600 bucks
in that perspective it's actually qutie cheap
i mean I could sell my starizona idk
nexus?
yea
ig
can't use both at the same time anyways
unless the filter comes before the corrector
can you calculate it

no
it depends on the size of the secondary and the width of the image train i think
but also optics can make it weird
I dont think it woould work
what wouldn't work?

idk :(
fast scope does a blueshift
so you have to redshift
wut
to compensate
but wouldn't you have to blueshift, so you filter out the slightly blueshifted line?
do i do a bobjones drawing

yes
ohhh the transmission curve gets blueshifted
i was thinking the light got blueshifted
that would be impressive
thats how you know you got a fast scop

Yes
great comet or an average comet
doesn't matter. It's just about the target in general, cuz there are also some galaxy clusters that are really far away and 1arcmin in diameter that are kinda lame
It's your choice if you wanna compare the best of each target, the median, or the floor. idrc
i ask because a great comet beats a good galaxy cluster imo but a shit galaxy cluster beats a shit comet
you choose how you wanna vote
i guess if we go by average, average comets aren't very interesting
When I chose, I was comparing a A6 (Lemmon) vs. Virgo cluster type of thing
but other peiople gotta choose what they base their vote off of
Hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby question
those are some of the best
Crazy how you're allowed to bring one on a flight but not the other
both should be banned

Mono + eaf
I think once u get mono your perception of price will be skewed enough for an eaf to appear as cheap
I sold my house to get my first telescope. My perception of price is permanently skewed.
centauri carbon or qidi q1 pro
why
closed container and not bed slingers
that means nothign to me
you only need pla or petg?
no i literally dont know what bed slinger means
which do you have
none
:/
my university has a large selection of prusas
ive been told only bambu by people, and other people said never to get bambu
yeah idk ppl r opinionated about this, honestly as long as it has overall good reviews, its returnable, and has a decent warranty policy
u can ask here
they have a channel for buying
Me and my friend have the bambu P1S and it's really good if you have the money for it buy that instead of something cheaper the price is worth it
I bought a Qidi Q1 Pro
The P1S looked good but apparently its older and lacks some modern features.
Oh alright
Q1 pro is a bit cheaper so that’s really my main reason
Also better for PETG-CF apparently which I do want to print
But the P1S is like 600 the Q1 is 1000
Uhh no?
P1S is $400, and the Q1 Pro was $375
At least from what i saw of just looking it up in 2s
Ohh right the bambu lab is on sale

Glass is more durable but I've heard it's no where near as sharp as film
Film because cheap
30€ for me filters for my newt, binoculars (double as filters for my camera lens), and eclipse glasses
Film sharper than glass??
Film for newts, glass for fracs
I tried both w my telephoto lens, and only glass seemed to let through true white light, film looked orangey ish
yep i knew it
yet another flat earther accusing me of a logical fallacy whilst they themself are using a logical fallacy
I was surprised too, browsed around on the web and yeah apparently film is generally sharper
Some high quality glass ones can apparently be better?
The film is just so thin that it doesnt really distort the light much. Also if there are no wrinkles, that is a sign its probably too tight, and that apparently can introduce distortions... All this just from some quick googling so take it with a big grain of salt
bro is STILL not achieving inner peace
yeah 😭
im lowk just ragebaiting him now tho
wait a minute why am i in polls 5
oh nvm i know why
I prefer glass just because its safer.
