Perfect
So first off, we sometimes miss things we should moderate, we’re just human beings though just to be fair mods are probably a bit further along the path to being superhuman than protostars
so you're saying the mrrow poll is low quality :<
No
this is the second time you guys have taken down my joke poll and both polls were almost identical
what was the poll?
He shall be banished to the shadow realm
The text i wrote on it was just the preview text that discord adds when making a poll
like “Add your answer” or whateve
not interesting or anything but still at the same level as many other joke polls posted here
so, a pointless poll?
arent the polls i mentioned also pointless
Skill issue
no, the meow poll is very important
True but what about the hello poll
can i at least make the poll again
that too
no :<
are you saying it's not important to greet people properly?
Here everybody wins
@static sapphire
dramatic

Again, please keep it on topic at least in spirit
espirit
espirit????
80% of the messages here are believe it or not off topic
i dont get why you care so much its not like this thread has any predefined rules its just for polls
lokaton fym seeing you live in b9
Me like sharp
im b4 with awful seeing
sharp dont matter if u can't see the thing
Imagine Tom’s seeing
in b7 with awful seeing🥳
except last few night idk what's been happening
i would rather be in b9 with amazing seeing
Im b9 with horrid seeing 🎉
Thats good
that was at like 20 degrees too
when ir pass filter?
id show you what ive been getting but my usb drive died with 36gb of moon data and 6gb of saturn
Damn bro
💔
You can see it. I see stuff from b9
usb drive dying is crazy im still using a decade old drive fine
NOOO
i am pissed because it took me 2 hours to get anything on saturn, i am blind af and its hard for me to spot planets when the moon's as bright as it is
but you need 2 thousand hours
i once got 200 gig of moon data
if i wanted to be stupid i could probably have gotten 200gb too, i was shooting at the max fps my 585 could handle at full res
literally why
i hate shooting moon bc the things so damn big
same
can't crop so you're stuck at low fps and giant files
Sounds like something a refractor user would say
i would rather use a frac in b6 than a sct in b9
why not just use rct in b9!
Cause you lose a bit of sharpness
wdym, rct sharper than sct
Huh?
why do so many people here have rainbows in their name what do those even mean
Sct is more zoomed in
ficken gay
pride representation
drizzle
at least me, idk if grand's that too
focal length doesn't matter
it reminds me of people being called tyking
I like rainbows
thats what i assumed it was
Still when you are natively more zoomed in, the more you can resolve (according to me)
clicking auto 4 times in siril is like 90% of the way to the skill ceiling
just get the 45000 dollar vaonis hyperia smh
you can mostly only go down in skill
i mean
have you guys seen astrobin
I seen people with $100k observatories take worse images than the average #1127675764356173885
Skill bottlenecks gear but it also goes the other way around

Earth
Yes
In the beginning, gear over skill
In the end, skill over gear
Gear and skill should grow hand in hand.
Sometimes I see photos that must have the most beatiful, high resolution, low noise data... then the processing looks like they smudged it on the pavement
WHY IS IT SO SHARP????
sharpen tool to 259% if I touch that shit i would need a tetanus shot
Imagine ypu had no clue about this hobby or what you are looking at. That what those people are relying on... an audience that has not a single clue what they are looking at, or what it should look like
They would think we are mental
i mean
not would
they do
every interaction between the chad reality preservers and the virgin topaz clippers, we hate each other
So there's not a huge point in shooting H-beta, but it tells you about two things:
- The temperature of the ionizing source (you need higher temperature to get significant H-beta emission)
- The degree of extinction between the source and us
H-beta isn't really useful for getting a pretty image, but it is useful for doing science
:3
topaz ai users are weird

probably
I usually don’t go to 30’ because conditions need to be really good for it; I’m mostly leaving it at 10-20’ for narrowband
Do you start having issues with star saturation with subs that long?
Usually no with narrowband
Some brighter stars create halos
to clarify its argo navis
also these all cost the same
mmm
just depends on you
personally I don't care how heavy a scope is, id use a 16" every night
my general concern is how easy it is to use
but ik some people wouldn't even want an 8"
its a long focal length
how much
I feel like at some point dobsonians become too big to use untracked
i heard past 3000 it's a pain but ive never done untracked with that much fl
That's me though, I am not great at shooting untracked with my dob
at 1500 though it's still very easy
I should get a guidescope instead of a finderscope on my dob, so I can actually see where I'm trying to point at
telrad moment
0x magnification doesn't help very much
yeah my issue is magnification, I am blind (literally) to the point where I can't spot saturn if it's anywhere close to the moon
telrad is very nice to get a rough start of where to point
while a fat finder scope (like 8x50mm) will help pinpoint
My sister doesn't struggle at all to spot the planets regardless of how bright or close the moon is, meanwhile I can't see jack
Would need magnification to help me out
(Tracking)
Maybe I can throw my old sv165 on the dob
finding stuff at 750 was hard but it was really just a lack of experience
is there not a program like starsense which takes the live feed to tell you where to move the thing to
last month it was super easy to find everything with just star hopping
there is but they arent very accurate
u could also get a guideacope with an astrocam and use sharpcap push to assistant
yk what could work
put camera on guidescope, use widefield eyepiece to find target w/ electronic assistance
switch eyepiece with camera to do lucky imaging
yea that's what i was saying
are there focal reducers for newtonians which dont f up the image

wow this is bullying im telling someone
Thor exke
Every time i see you making a poll its you asking if you should buy different gear every single time
its to narrow down my choices
but as you wish ill do a valid or invalid now
I'm just pointing it out and im saying it because its better for you to have a clear idea of what you want
What im understanding is that the dob will only be used for planetary and/or visual?
yeah mainly
at some point lucky imaging would be sick but without an eq platform, that may get difficult
In my opinion, visual is like planetary: there isn't a big amount of objects to enjoy, in the long run buying the 585M for AP will entertain you more. Just my opinion.
Also idk if you'd have to set and pack the dob up after every session, if so, that's something to keep in mind
i think there's tons to see in b5 with a fat dob
maybe if he was b7 I'd agree
I agree, but you can't enjoy as many objects as you would with AP
This is called averted vision btw
i screw up the terms
so often
anyhow its a betrayal
Stupid evolution should have given us two petzval eyes
Still don't understand how it works
more rod cells on the outer edges of your retina i think
What's the point evolution just hates humans Istg, firstly useless organ that just explodes, then useless teeth that don't even fit and now useless eye rods positions 🥀
that has a reason
It's harder to miss something when you aren't looking at it so those areas are more sensitive
none of them are useless
It needs to be more sensitive in the area since it isnt focused
sadly though its also the reason i think i have schizophrenia
What to purchase!!

It's quite common
there's so many catalogues https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_astronomical_catalogues
An astronomical catalogue is a list or tabulation of astronomical objects, typically grouped together because they share a common type, morphology, origin, means of detection, or method of discovery. Astronomical catalogs are usually the result of an astronomical survey of some kind.

And only your images will be affected

Seems a bit excessive 😭
Arago scope when?
homemade telescopes?
ill get there soon dont worry
yeah
wait so do you buy the mirror online or do you make it DIY
Or lens
Whatever
for most of them, bought online, for the 2.5" im going to do some figuring work on it, trying to make it an off axis paraboloid
whatever that word means sounds great
That's harder than it sounds, you'll have to recoat it as well
dont have to recoat it, when it wasnt coated to begin with
but yeah ive got silver stuff im gonna use for making film anyways so im gonna do silver coating
Mmhh silver
Keep in mind that it's inferior to aluminium in almost every way
Decently cheap tho
it tarnishes yeah
but technically its better reflectivity, right after you make it
How is silver cheaper than aluminum??
We are talking about micrograms
And aluminium depositing requires a vacuum chamber
you need a high vacuum to coat aluminum
its the process not the material
oh
Micrograms might be an exaggeration but yeah, maybe a fraction of a gram or so
I think the huge mirrors of the VLT use only 30 grams of aluminium, if not less
yeah
a 2.5 inch mirror is basically nothing
what did vlt mean again i forgot
very large telescope
you not gonna guess what they named the telescope thats bigger than that one

And

so thats not an IMAGING target
then what is it bro
Im taking images of it
Its just not spatially resolved as a disk
eh
you want me to go resolve it from the parent star is that it?
i want you to catch light of the exoplanetary surface

It's in the middle
So not dark, but not that bad either
its dark vro

cold in February but the targets are great
i concur
All of my best images have been in December.
cold imaging is the best
#🔭-astrophotography-chat message
Ouchie
First one you can see that there's frost forming up on the top edge of the laptop
i really hate bugs, and i get bit by a milion bugs everytime i go out to shoot, so i love winter time. even my minecraft username is Overwinter
How cold was it?
I don't even get astrodark in summer
But i did some astronomy in america, hated the bugs
You'd love this image
i think i was shooting in -10 fahrenheit windchills last winter
what do you even do in this scenario lol, you cant kill it
On that night somewhere between 15 and 20 °F
Though I've been in the 10°F zone, stood outside for a few hours trying to image the Orion Nebula with a DSLR. Came out with 20 useful subs. Oh, I'm still not tracked so each sub was 1.3s.
I saw it happen and my first thought was "Okay, I have GOT to find that frame." I would have been upset if I had not found it.
lol. solar seems fun, my rig would prob be really good for it
I did that with a Baader solar film that I set up in between cardboard. Since then I've purchased a telescope fitting filter and a continuum filter.
What rig? My solar imaging is done with "Evie" - Evostar 72ED.
Celestron 6SE on an HEQ5, asi585mc (uncooled)
Ooohhh. My other rig is "Rio" - a Skyview Pro 8 .... an Orion 8" OTA mounted on an EQ5. And I have the 585.
I also have "Nexy" which is a Celestron Nextar 127 SLT.
Alas, I have no solar filters for those two.
But oh imagine if I did, I'd be able to get some really great detail on sunspots.
I had to figure out something to get a reasonable one with Evie and a 2x Barlow.
Im hoping to get a second rig going at some point, I actually have a spare HEQ5 im not using rn, I'd prob go with a wider fov for it, like something that can get all of andromeda with like 4 mosaic panels
TBH I wouldn't mind getting a P1 camera. They use the same sensor and are less expensive. Some people here say that you have a little more control over them, than the ASI product.
im planning on getting touptek's IMX585 for mono, and then a P1 camera for guiding i believe
You do, fan speeds, dew heating power, and P1 draws a lot less power for the TEC than ZWO does
Hi!
Basically I want to have the Uranus-C. Maybe 2 because why not. And the Ares-C Pro kit that comes with filter and OAG.
And replace my focusers with EAF.
February to may is the best weather, not to hot and good targets
December to May. Best weather, best seeing and not scorching hot
I mostly just like winter for the targets not for anything else compared to summer
I don't have astrodarkness in the summer. So is a no-go most of the time😂
light pollution can be controlled and counteracted
i want to see you put on a filter that allows you to look through clouds
use xray
telescope
what
sir you do realise xray doesnt pass through earths atmosphere do you?
Wait no i meant radio
so i can use a single pixel to image
cuz people decided to not post polls about astrophotography
Yeah it can, but no one does anything about it
Got a problem with that?
Weather is just weather, you can't control it but imo LP is worse
Id argue a person with constant clouds would be able to image less than a person with high bortles.
It can be as clear as it wants, its just not worth it
how does one come to such a conclusion
also its worth noting that there are places where light pollution will be low through the entirety of our lifetimes
so id argue, you can even go away from light pollution, that cant be said for clouds. They find you whereever you go
Can't agree
elaborate
Not with that final statement, just as a whole
play minesweeper in the mean time
I'll go with B1
yk what
ill just move away from the B1 and just go there every clear night

I already have 10 clear nights per year. Might as well make it B1

Same
I had the itch to put my phone on the eyepiece of my old cheap frac... and everything went downhill
Mine are b7🔥
the entire world is b9 except ur little hut in the middle of nowhere where u live
so then ill have clearskies in b9 all year round and 10 clear nights in B1, best of both worlds
Shoot it
Should I rank my top people on the server

I’ll do top 5

Come on... nothing is more satisfying than staring at PHD2 as it flat-lines...
my entire setup wants to flatline
I have to stare at my guide graph cause it likes to throw itself off a cliff randomly
Like 4" steep cliff?

recently yeah
but before it was like 18" steep cliff
😿
i do all of these
That's a real hemisphere tbh
I know. But weather you are at 40°N in the eastern hemisphere or 40°N in the western hemisphere, you share the same sky
why does this read like it was writen by a serial killer
My lawyer advised me not to answer these type of questions

I had an initial astronomy interest
I don't think you can get lower than B3 in EU
You can, there's a couple B2 sites in Spain and a good amount of them in France
We can't count Scotland as EU anymore but they got plenty too, even b1
i mean you could scale the alps
I remember when Spain went into B1 mode
plus a lot of the northern coutries like norway and sweden have a ton of dark sites (idk if theyre in the eu though)
Me too... because I didn't have electricity for the whole day
They are😂
I was talking continental EU
what about ukraine they have dark sites are they eu
No politics
No I think that was a legit question
🀄️
Ukraine is on the edge of the what most people consider Europe
They got other issues😂
my country’s lowest is like a bortle 4 so i gotta go to weird mountain villages in neighboring countries to get good views
Even before 22, Ukraine had a lot of dark sites
im sure they had plenty of dark sites before the year 22AD
Everyone in america is so lucky bro like 30% of the country is bortle 2 and bortle 1
They dont need to cross borders
How about Australians?
yeah but australia is like 90% deadly radiocative desert so they cant really enjoy the dark skies there
actually why dont they just dig a canal through australia
and terraform the desert
it would cost like what, 10 billion dollars and like 5 years? Completely doable
In Romania we have a bunch of B2 skies in the mountains, at like 2000m
I ain't climbing the Făgăraş just to be eaten by bears. Plus, my rig is as portable as my car
Recently, some tourist from Italy got off his motorcycle to pet a bear, and got absolutely devoured, but in all fairness, bears aren't a big problem here if you have some common sense
Watching F1
Bro didn't invest his skill points into common sense

But yeah we got a lot of b2
LOTS
and maybe a little b1
yeh i saw you have one decently big area that's b1, but I don't know hot safe it is to go there because it may just all be cliffs etc
huh very safe according to google maps' view
The whole of the northwest and islands are basically B1, spill isn't anywhere near what the 2015 data suggests.
Thats the isle of Lewis i think, ive been there and it would be pretty safe to image
Pretty flat in the middle
Why not a combination of the options
Like, they could not launch and it still explodes, like last time
Because that doesnt answer the question of whether or not it will launch. Misunderstood the question, idk i just forgot
wait what
One of the boosters failed a static fire test, I think
at night or day...?
Is this today
That was a static test firing a while ago for the flight that’s supposed to happen now
Starship flight test 10 will be the tenth flight test of a SpaceX Starship launch system, utilizing Booster 16 and Ship 37.
Originally scheduled for no earlier than (NET) June 29, 2025, the launch was postponed following the loss of Ship 36, which was destroyed in an explosion during propellant loading for a static fire test in mid-June.

I prefer the processing part tbh
But only if it's my own data, so I can't dislike imaging
Where do you image?

Backyard / Set Observatory / Remote
What if you don't image
im kinda mixed, i dont enjoy imaging on its own, but its fun to live stack while imaging so you can see how the data improves with every image. ive only done live stacking with my dwarf 3 tho, i need to set up the nina plugin for it still
i wouldn't do that until you have good consistent guiding
since until then you will probably need to throw away some subs
Will Starship launch today?

Yes, but it explodes upon start attempt.
under 5 minutes on a good night 😭
how???
semi permanent rig
ah
I just put it on its place, I already know where to put it to get a good rough polar alignment
but like still, ive had focusing take that long
so I just gotta boot up my laptop, run TPPA and that's it
i usually have to do asiair tppa like 4 times to get a good result lol
What hemisphere u in

what
focusing literally takes 10 seconds
maybe if u don't have a bahtinov a bit longer
yea i dont have one
mostly just a struggle getting the fwhm below like 4
the rest of the time is just fighting with the asiair lol
Best thing to do while imaging

Like 7 - 10 minutes maybe
Carry out mount with rough polar alignment, get scope, accessories and then well, done.
Carrying a fully set up HEQ5 is easier than one would think
how tf do yall not have technical issues
i keep on having things be out of focus or trailed and each takes like 10m to solve lol
am i stupid or does my rig just suck
probably me being stupid
i do but i figured out how to solve them
they happen and i fix them quick
i don't have int goals i just image until the clear skies end
Depends on my clear skies....

2 hours max
Bro how
To get to the center of the eclipse line
Hehe I guess so
Im north enough for northern lights
And got lucky with the solar eclipse last year
And for the meteor showers and comets, I just traveled 40 minutes to b5
All of them, including total and annular total solar eclipse
We could see naked eye aurora from 32N last year (barely, but it was visible)
Quite a difference in price between options
yeah lol
imo 17 pro with hub, if your gti is overloaded you won't get enough data to take advantage of pix
you can always get pix later, you're OSC so it's not nearly as necessary as if you were mono
It’s overloaded but my guiding is acceptabl
that makes it slightly harder
I’m really debating on whether to go with the 17 or 17 pro with hub. The hub would cost $240 to get into the 17.
So 17 and hub is $1540. Or I could get the 17 pro and hub for $1600
17 Pro and Hub over the 17 and Hub, the 60 dollar difference is worth it
Yea it would be worth it. But I’m not even sure I want to get the hub
So if I don’t care about the hub, I’d just get the 17. But if I do want the hub, there’s no reason to not get the 17 pro with hub
It'd essentially replace the need for the sv241 or any other hub you might use, makes your stuff a lot cleaner as well
Yea
Makes things a lot easier to diagnose and test too, and maintenance as well
It's worth it imo, it saves you a wee bit of money if you don't right now, but money is temporary
It just sucks because I also need a new tripod to hold a ragdoll
So id be spending $1800
I’m buying the tripod like tmrw because it works with the GTI. So no reason to wait
Guess I need to gamble more
Aurora that one night with the huge solar stoem
It's so brifht
October 10
When in doubt always get a better mount
I don’t think my wallet likes you very much
I can imagine your wallet doesn’t like you very much either considering you bought a gti
The gti has served me well and I can sell it for $500
Lunar eclipse is when the sun passes between the earth and the moon right
[anything] eclipse is when [anything] is what gets eclipsed (i.e. covered)
Also excuse me what 😭 ? The sun passes between the earth and the moon?
Hate when that happens
Gets way too hot
A total solar eclipse was truly a breathtaking experience. My only regret was that I wasn’t into astrophotography yet. So I only have pretty meh images taken with my phone.
At least you can tell it’s a solar eclipse
I knew it... the solar system is a geocentric system and not a heliocentric
yes the answer is 7
If you had included an annular solar eclipse, then I would have been able to not check something
I even got to see the Perseids and the aurora at the same time last year... honestly along with the total solar eclipse and Tsuchinshan–ATLAS it was the single best year for astronomy I've had
i mean an annular solar eclipse is kind of just a fancier-looking partial eclipse
but idk maybe i shouldve added it
all but total solar eclipse
aurora and Comet ive seen insanely clearly i couldnt believe my eyes
C/2023a3 and the january one

Proxisky Ragdoll 17 Pro with USB hub saddle ($1600)
Just look at @tall rivet's stuff
wtf how
5 - 2 = 3
8 - 3 = 5
thats the scientific way
but what i personally do is
58 + 12 is 60
and since 23 + 37 is also 60
it MUST be 35
yk?
I will choose to ignore everything else in this conversation and only read this
see you get it
That's only possible because the phone he uses lets him get raw data
Most don't
Either way it's impressive as there are more challenges to phone AP than just compression, but if you are dealing with compression it is literally impossible to do that kind of work
I think nowadays most phones can actually shoot in 100% raw (except iPhones). Only some really low-end or very old phones don’t allow it anymore. On Android you just install DeepSkyCamera and shoot in raw
I know at least iPhone and Samsung still can't do it
My S25+ shoots "raw" but it's not really raw
Expert raw really isn’t. But you can just install DSC and shoot raw with it — it comes out unedited
Isn't the processing straight out of the sensor, making it impossible to bypass by any software?
The S25+ can do 600s exposures in raw on DSC, actually. Way more than the 55s I get on my already somewhat old Mi12
I've tried DSC on my S22 but not on the S25 yet
With iPhones, even third-party apps still apply some processing to the raw… But on Android, the raw from third-party apps are actual sensor raw. Try it yourself: grab a raw from Expert RAW and try to open it in PixInsight — it’ll throw a format error, because it’s not really a raw. Then open one from DSC… it’ll open just fine
I'll definitely try that, good to know
This is what I get out of a "RAW" from DSC
(60s dark)
