This was my 1st time ever guiding and taking long exposures. I know the background is weird and wonky..! No flats or darks. This was only 1H 46m of exposure time using my Ha filter. It took me & a friend about 6 hours to get all the software working and polar alignment and guiding setup... This was a rough edit in Lightroom since I don't have pixensight yet..

Uhmmm

#

This looks like Ha but... also like a onion

#

Details are nice but the black Point is weird

#

uhhh what happend

clever marsh
#

Yea. I didn’t use any flats or darks. I was using light room and had to mask the whole background to darken it up. I missed a few spots but this was seriously a rough edit. I’ve never done this before

sturdy tendon
#

Do first process in Siril

clever marsh
#

And my other filters

clever marsh
# sturdy tendon Do that

This was the original edit but I tried to push it a little more The background looks better on this one

@clever marsh could you share the data in "share your data" please. i would like to edit that. Like just the stacket picture, a fit or a tif. you can use mediafire of something

clever marsh
#

Damn, you guys are harsh haha. 😂 cut me some slack lol

sturdy tendon
#

Or google drive

please send the original stack before any edits

clever marsh

i did

#

its in the share your data section

#

@opal copper

I was just looking there, the data looks quite good actually

Share the data see if anyone can get it better

It looks cool, I am just so genuinely unsure how you got this color result. I kinda fw it

Damn

#

You are very new aren't you

#

Not bad for a first time in terms of sharpness and detail

#

Might wana invest into rgb filters as well

verbal tundra
#

Wtf

clever marsh
# verbal tundra Wtf

Do you have a problem? You’re welcome to not comment if you don’t have anything that’s not blatantly rude

clever marsh
# verbal tundra Stop clipping everything

Obviously, I have no clue what that means. Do you always criticize people as if you were never new and didn’t know about anything? You can criticize without being a dick.

You can clip an image pretty easily by setting the contrast and black point very high, the idea when it comes to post processing is to not do that, in order to achieve ideal details and image quality.

#

Sometimes a few clipped areas or portions of an image are ok and relatively acceptable; stars can be as white as possible at their center as long as it's only the stars, it's usually almost entirely unnoticeable unless you're specifically looking for that, and even then it really doesn't take anything away from the overall image. Clipped darks are less acceptable, as they generally tend to be background pixels and/or pixels representing dark nebulae in an otherwise bright background. If the darker pixels are clipped in this context, it tends to look worse than if the lighter pixels were clipped, but this issue can be easily fixed by setting the black point low enough that the darker pixels stray away from fully 100% black.

#

hope that helps and/or summarizes sufficiently

clever marsh
opal copper
#

Oh yeah, hold on lol

clever marsh
#

But thank you for clarifying

opal copper
#

here's a normal, non clipped image of the Orion Nebula I've taken

#

and here's an absolute nightmare

clever marsh
#

Yeah, the black does not look normal at all

opal copper
#

that is clipped, the dark pixels and light pixels are fully maxed out to 100% black and 100% white

clever marsh
#

I plan on using pixen sight I would only imagine it has a histogram

opal copper
#

I think it does, I wouldn't know for sure since I've never used it before

#

but most professional photo editing programs tend to have them

clever marsh
#

I’m just learning the basics right now. I’m more worried about getting more image data than anything right now

#

I jumped into the deep end with buying a mono camera

opal copper
#

That's a good sentiment, focusing on getting image data before learning how to really process things. You can learn from the other people here who have more experience with processing, and at the same time improve your imaging skills

For a first bash at guiding and exposure time... I think it's pretty fun and there is decent core detail too!

... orientation and colour choice (however intentional) gives it a quirky human persona... wayyyy more interesting and again, fun!

As the Sha77ered_Spiri7 said... more decent (doesn't have to be perfect) data always wins out ... and makes processing easier.

cool job Sir!

# clever marsh I am kind of stressing setting up again to image. I had PhD really spot on with ...

Just spotted this....

If PHD2 was performing well on last shoot... just set up and make sure your polar alignment is good for next shoot

"Do not change any PHD2 settings" and then click go!

The PHD2 guys are beyond talented... and basically "have you covered". Don't stress about guiding... if your guiding is not good, 95% chance it is you, cables, rig, pets, neighbours floodlight, foxes, raccoons...
