The word S K I B I D I is banned lol
i know thats why i didnt type it properly
That's what I was trying to correct!
anyways back to this i dont understand why they changed the channels to like these forums
Ikr?
For solar system pics it might be bc zegery wanted to put up that safety thing
ok well that kind of makes sense but with dso it doesnt really
there was nothing wrong with the original channel and they didnt add anything special to the forums
Yeah I agree, a lil weird
Should we ask someone?

do the east veil, i will take care of the discovered nebula
An object that isn't named is somewhat common, but new discoveries are rare
checked SIMBAD, very clearly nothing marked in there π€·ββοΈ
one I researched quite thoroughly already, it looks like it should have gotten picked up by the Planck's Catalog of Galactic Cold Clumps but for some reason didn't (it seems a bit brighter than other nearby (detected) clumps so maybe that's why)
the other is a red-ish one that happens to be under a DSS2 glitch, but it's also there on other surveys that don't have a glitch there, still have to dig a bit deeper about this one to confirm it's not known but it doesn't show up on SIMBAD either
still have to familiarise myself with VIZIER for checking both of those, and I wanna also get the astrobin subscription to check if anyone has photographed those coords
You can capture the veil nebula with an unmoded dslr ?
Yes
Filter is nice tho
Didnt know that
Thanks for the information
that looks like something you'd see on an autostretch preview
How did you find it?
scrolling around the sky in Stellarium with PANSTARRS survey lol
Nice
Have you watched seen this: https://youtu.be/qaKXTnounrU?si=D0WJaxnCveiBf8xC
I share the full story of discovering a faint reflection nebula around the star V374 Cep in the constellation Cepheus that I have named Carver 1 or 'The Hummingbird Nebula.' Photos on astrobin: https://www.astrobin.com/3stv25/ (new!) https://www.astrobin.com/3zm108/ (initial) For those curious about making discoveries themselves, I break down s...
It gives some detailes of how to research a new nebula
I have! that's roughly what I based my research into if it's known or not on
Thatβs good
Im curious now, you have any plans to image it soon?
the big difference is that he's working with a reflection nebula with a bright star in the middle, where as the two I found don't have a central star within them so the step with searching the various names of a star and adding nebula on google gets kinda messy.. on the darker one I did search for the closest two or three nearest brightish stars though but didn't find anyone imaging any nebulae close to them
get shooting it asap
as soon as the weather improves, + maybe 1 other imaging session on something more predictable before those so that I can get to know the new telescope a bit before trying to image something new
if ur using pc theres a way to use planetarium to slew
every time I try that on my laptop stellarium just crashes the moment I alt tab out of it and then back into it lmao
Do you have a idea of how bright it is?
Try Nina
but I have the coordinates for them so I can just input that into APT then verify with plate solving (or NINA but learning that is on my todo list lol)
yep
I got clear skyβs in two hours, so if youβd like I can take a look for you
don't know how to estimate brightness yet, something I gotta learn
eh, no need to rush, one's high in the sky right now and the other doesn't even actually set
Alright, are you in northern hemisphere?
yep
Nice, if you change your mind I got you :)
tbh I'm not sure how well my DSLR will fair on them, so if the internal filters ruin my attempts I'll reach out π

While you're at it also do M73
i need a lore drop to choose one
theory theory
-
Dark Forest Theory
-
No aliens have reached out to us, since the universe is like a dark forest; Everyone is on their own.
-
You don't know the intentions of the other people there, if there are any. (or rather, you don't know the intentions of other lifeforms.
-
"Be silent, the others might hear you."
-
Incubation Theory
-
Extraordinary Intelligent Life let less advanced lifeforms evolve until they are ready for a higher sort of communication and evolving.
-
Zoo Theory
-
No aliens reached out, because we are just "animals" in a zoo. An attraction, meant to not be disturbed.
-
Early Bird Theory
-
We are the first intelligent lifeform to exist in the universe.
-
Different Kind of Life
-
Life as we know it doesn't exist elsewhere.
-
Great Silence Theory
-
Other life goes extinct before advaced spacetravel can ever be achieved.
-
Self-Destruction Theory
-
Similar to how humans destroy themselves with war, or rather, can destroy themselves with war, all aliens that can colonize self-destruct due to war and advanced weaponry before any other lifeform (such as ourselves) can be reached.
-
The Great Filter Theory
-
From a scale, all other life forms go extinct before being able to reach an intelligent state (like how humans are the only species on earth thats "intelligent"), making extraterresital life EXTREMELY rare
@potent mango ^
fr
like imagine being so far ahead of your time that you are the only being(s) in existence, that the universe was made to be colonised and shi but you were born too early
like that spaceship movie where the guy wakes up 80 years early
fr if its made interesting
the zoo theory would do a cool one too though
imagine like if
humanity finds out
that they are just an attraction to aliens
and then revolt
kinda reminds me of planet of the apes

SCT on an AZ is pretty stupid, youre enhancing the field rotation artifacts
also its quite stupi to buy such a high focal length system yet run it alt az
Planet/Moon photography?
oh is that what youre doing
Onstep eq 3-2 with 130-650pds
I still prefer deep sky, but I'm going to 9 bortle soon and won't be able to shoot it
you need to flip a coint what you really want to do
Too expensive for me, I only have ~550$
Then. Onstep eq3-2 with the 150p ( its on sale in astroshop.eu)
Used 650pds is 400$
you sir need more money
I know

lol
easiest way to tell: stars, colors
desi legacy surveys
it has a lot of background galaxies and these suspicious star spikes
dss doesnt have any background galaxies, normal spikes and not a lot of detail
sdss has a lot of detail and has unique colors
dss is nice for me because im not getting any of that detail anyways lol
panstarss has this weird tiling thing, unique colors and a lot of detail
lol true but its just cool to see these details
on surveys
partial to mellinger or whatever its called for having good colors
bludd i even know which surveys look like my subs just with less noise and which show how much detail i can theoretically get

maybe
B9 astroers would say otherwise
just turn off the lights smh my head, it's that easy
I donβt like open clusters, but globular clusters are cool especially for visual.
83% of the messier catalogue would be gone
Some of the coolest dso you can see are globular clusters you crazy son of a human being
bright nebulae are more impressive
Didnt say they were top 1
Just high tier dso
Cause you know... there are open clusters out there
am I seriously the only person who actually likes open clusters π
yes
Yes
Only exception
Idk
hot take: open clusters are better than globs
once you've seen one glob you've pretty much seen them all, opens at least are somewhat original and actually make for some neat sky filler (such as in Perseus)
really need an option that's better than meh and not quite a cool though
this take is colder than liquid helium itself
Open clusters made a big part of why Im into astro and stuff. Back when I just began using my telescope they were the first DSOs I ever saw. During those days I've seen a shit ton of them cause they comprised of like 90% of all DSO's I observed (it was winter so I didn't see any globs)
I particularly like M45, M7, M6, C14, C10, C13, M46, M41, M44, M35, and M36
The best hot take ever
i learned you shouldnt image these targets the hard way
I have a friend which he avoids zenith like the plague
i wasted like a couple hours imaging m101 just to find out when it was near the zenith it changed focus
Can't relate I'm near the horizon
I've managed to image NGC 6250 in 5* above horizon
β οΈ
It was fun becasue by the time i figured where the target was it already started setting
this is why I loath the horizon
Should globular clusters be removed from the messier catalog

tbh if I were you I'd hunt for a used 150/750 and a used EQ5 instead (and get onstep later), I feel like the EQ3-2 might struggle a lil bit for astrophoto with the 150p
some people would even say that the EQ5 is kinda suboptimal for a 6" actually (though personally imo it's fine)
idk where you're from but here in Poland I bought a used 150p for like 200 bucks recently and quite often see the EQ5 (sometimes even with motors!) go for like 300-350 bucks
So I take Used, I only have enough for eq3-2
Iβm from Russia, many things here cost twice as much
Used 150/750 is 600$
ah bummer.. though if those are common used prices you might still be able to snipe some occasional good deal to squeeze that EQ5 out of that budget
What should I buy (I go to b9 and buy new setup)

ironic as i've had a lot of clear weather lately and every forecast shows it clearing up on the night of the eclipse, even weirder right before it starts (for me)
almost too convenient if you ask me
Yeah but you still have the database and all the people here
How should I get that money for a mono setup

How would you image without a camera???
Cameras for different wavelengths if you ask me π€
π
Spectroscope?
yes, spectroscope
Spectroscope is something like a telescope (you donβt take pictures with you telescope, do you? You take them with your camera)
oh okay, maybe i meant a spectometer?
Tbh I have only recently joined astrobin, so I have no clue if it's better or not.
nvm, I just noticed what's new.
they made sorting images by date cost money
i think that description is skipping some other changes
dont really mind the other changes
like much better (imo) LAYOUT when you view an image
it was just really useful for comet stuff lol
or the 'other images in this region' section under image's details
finding images from a specific time is useful
overall its a minor ui revamp, dont agree with cutting out the free stuff tho
burgers, here I am.for der exlips
bro I don't even see a new astrobin layout
What is everyone talking about
Eww put it down
date published used to be free
why tf would it need to costmoney
like oh yeah I'll tell you what my entire setup is, but not when I took it
no that also costs money, i think that part hasnt changed though
Very glad I opted to purchase the ultimate.
i mean astrobin is pretty affordable, but it's never good to lock the features that were previously free behind a paywall
Spectrometers, diy ones, use an astro cam to view the emission lines.
do you need a camera for astrophotos

invest in a brand new planetary tracking goto dob rig
isn't that just for search though?
for now
yeah I checked and you can see both the equipment and date taken under posts when logged out, it's just the search features that are paid
the ones locked except date published have been like that even before the ui revamp
why asstrobin so money hungry
I imagine hosting astrophoto stuff can get quite expensive tbh, imo it's quite fair
pushing more people to pay also reduces the fee of an individual paying member
as a result it's more affordable and more users decide to upgrade
Old:
Skywatcher 150p, EQ5 pro, ASI 585 MC, Baader UV/IR cut and other minor accesories
Upgraded:
Everything the same except an OAG, Umi 17r and a additional SV220
i might go for an autofocuser instead of oag instead but idk
not much of a change?
i can actually image nebulae now
i will also get better guiding probably by atleast 2x
imo thats a pretty big change
do you already have guiding of some sort?
yes but its at 120mm thats why im considering if i should get an oag or autofocuser
well, if your guiding is good enough then I'd go for the autofocuser, but if your guiding is not quite there then I'd absolutely go for improving that part and a cheap bahtinov mask for easy focusing
I dont have problems with focusing but with the fact that focus changes with a temperature change for example
or a merdian flip also usually ruins my focus
and im not next to the scope all night
imo it's all up to if your guiding is good enough or not, because even if you don't want to stand there all night to fix the focus, you can fix the focus by just putting work into keeping it in check if you really feel like it, while you can't do anything like that to fix guiding
basically the matter of gear holding you back entirely vs the gear just being less convenient to use
my guiding isnt that bad and the new mount ill have has some really good guiding so i think ill go for the autofocuser
im literally sleeping while the rig is taking pics so i definetly cant check every now and then
The mount doesnβt guide.
What is the guiding pixel scale and imaging pixel scale? That is what matters most
wdym?
by what i said i mean the error is really good with the mount
0.8, 6.45
i think you can guess which one is which
Yeah, thatβs not great
If polar alignment is good it could work
you tweaking bro
firstly, Ha in other galaxies (except m33)
pretty much impossible to capture without nb
secondly, large nebula are hard to capture without one i mean i tried ngc 6888 once and even with a 60s exposure there barely was anything
also guiding is pretty much necessary if you want to do long subs
have you been using a DSLR when you did that by chance, or like are you sure you were on target
no i was using asi 585 mc and yes i platesolved multiple times to see if im really on the target
what bortle
4
i captured cocoon recently and it was very dim on my subs too
also tried to capture other big nebulae other than ngc 6888 and same thing
I mean, narrowband isn't exactly gonna make that stuff brighter, it's just gonna make other stuff dimmer
Do you have a Dobsonian telescope?
17
32
2
No
β
i know but like seriously i barely saw anything
maybe it was because i wasnt shooting with a uv ir cut filter so i was capturing a lot of nir too
well idk how bright crescent is cause I have an unmodded DSLR and I think I only took 1 sub of it ever without checking if I'm even on target and after it started getting bright lol, but are you sure it's not just that it's dim enough where you need more than 60s for it to be noticible
ok whatever lets just end this discussion
and i firstly didnt even say you cant capture them without one
Rho Ophiuchi like Chicken Sandwich
so like cheese then
I meant the opiuchi part

xisf has more headers and built in loseless compression
Yeah but that doesn't justify it to be adopted by everything.
