#Help me find a telescope
30 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
There are two main parts to this hobby: visual, where you look at planets and some galaxies through your own eyes, and astrophotography, where you take pictures of galaxies and planets using a camera. You should start with a visual so that you can learn about how to manually track stars, and it's overall pretty fun. If you really like visual and want to see more, then you can do astrophotography. Astrophotography is a very expensive hobby and visual is much cheaper.
For visual you sould choose a 8 inch dobsonian telescope
a dobsonian is a reflector which uses mirrors to get an image
there is also another option which is a refractor that uses lenses
this is a good 8inch dob https://www.highpointscientific.com/skywatcher-8inch-traditional-dobsonian-telescope-s11610

its 500 and you can save the rest of your money for astrophotography (if u like it) which is expensive
also btw astrophotgraphy is a massive pain to do
but it is rewarding
Good luck!
If you are going for visual get the biggest dob that you can move around
No bro 8-10 inch is the sweet spot anything more than that is going to weigh 70-100 lbs
Beginners need something that is not too big in aptiture because they should be able to take it out whenever they want
Very large dobs are often hobby killers. They are not good for beginners
U need to start with smth midsized and work your way up
I mean get like tube design ones they are light like you can go for a 12 inch
10 is also good
He is a beginner! Big aptiture is not priority.
And the light tube designs are mid because I think they usually have cheap mirrors and focusers
He has 1000 which is a good amount to buy an 8 inch dob and can save the rest if he likes the hobby
He might THINK he likes the hobby but realize it might not be for him
The big aptiture ones also have long tubes so it’s not a good idea for beginners
It’s this guys first scope
No offense I think u have aptiture fever lol. We all do
Yeah after I looked through a observatory telescope @placid notch
Like trustube design is light
Or get a used 8 inch dob
yea good truss tube are like 50 pounds which is not bad
thats a good option too
Not like that I meant dobsonian telescope with thustube design
