Having clouds for a very long time is why I have more than one hobby (astrophotography). If it's cloudless, I do astro, If it is cloudy and especially foggy, I do liminal space photography. It's a win-win

Nonono… the most evil thing that can happen to you is you setting up your heavy mount and telescope, and the forecast is saying that it’ll be clear the whole night, so you start imaging and 10 min later it’s completely cloudy, and yet the weather app is STILL saying it’s clear even though it definitely isn’t, and won’t be… for the next 3 months.

I came across this website (and app) called windy.com
never have I found a free app that has over 40 meteorology maps

insanely useful for astro as it has live mapping and prediction of low mid and high clouds

(it's international - I thought I'd share this to y'all cause I spent over an hour scrolling through all the maps last night it's super fascinating and insane that it's all free)

if anyone knows a better channel to post this in let me know I'll move it there too I think everyone here should have it

Freezing rain comes down as liquid and then quickly freezes into ice. Hail comes down as little ice chunks.

It freezes within seconds of impacting the ground and anything else, slowly encasing everything in ice, eventually weighing down and snapping tree branches, caving in roofs, rendering roads unusable, wrecking powerlines, among other bad things. 95% of the time it doesn't get severe enough to do that much destruction, but it can.

We charge our gear, scout locations, program tracking mounts — and then, at the very moment the sky is supposed to reveal its grandeur, the clouds roll in. Thin, mocking veils at first, like ghosts of disappointment. Then thicker and thicker, until the stars are smothered entirely.

The betrayal is not just emotional; it is deeply practical. Equipment that took hours to set up becomes useless. Could it maybe be b2 equivalent due to elevation? Lightpullution maps are usually based of satellite data so I don't see a reason to neglect that

The place where I shoot matches the numbers… A friend brought one of those DIY portable Bortle meters last time and checked. It matches the site’s data. but I’m sure there are plenty of places that haven’t had their data updated.

I don't think that site takes in account elevation.. That's why I'm saying, it's probably b3.2 at sea lvl, which would be equivalent to b2 at xxxx meters above sea lvl

So far i haven't had any issues, guiding has been around 0.6" RMS but other people regularly have it lower so idk of its my seeing or my settings are off
