Ran a few hours of subs for detecting muon strikes. Got quite a lot.

Asi533mc at -15c, 300s subs maximum stacked median subtracted.

I didnt know you can see muon strikes pepeHype

I guess you learn something new every day

floral ledge
#

so what do u point at to detect these?

#

random starfield?

broken canopy
floral ledge
#

thats so sick

#

any camera?

broken canopy
#

Yeah. Lower the dark current the better

floral ledge
#

ooh i got to try this

#

what are muons

#

some particle right?

broken canopy
#

Yeah. After cosmic rays break up they form

#

They are super weird. And proof of general relativity. They shouldn’t exist. But they do.

floral ledge
#

what the hell? u can prove relativity with a dslr is crazy

vernal granite
#

Holt shit this is amazing

vernal granite
#

Muons stricking at an angle?

broken canopy
#

Yes, going through multiple pixels at an angle.

floral ledge
#

what angle do you position the camera at

#

so that you can get a long line but also a feasible chance at catching a muon

solid pendant
#

Swear I had lines similar to that in my andromeda data that i scrapped the frames cuz I was like wtf are those @broken canopy

floral ledge
#

why would you scrap the frames?

#

they would be removed from sigma clipping

solid pendant
#

didn't think of that when i blinked them

broken canopy
#

The majority will come straight in.

floral ledge
#

also if u stack the exposures, doesnt it average out the muon trails?

#

how do u get it to show up in a stack

broken canopy
#

That’s why you maximum stack

floral ledge
#

oh whats that

broken canopy
#

Then median subtract, but that’s less important

#

Instead of averaging the pixels it only records the maximum each pixel had.

floral ledge
#

ohh i see

#

medium subtract makes it easier to see right?

#

because background will be clipped

#

also i saw a small blue line in one of my 120s darks

#

is that possibly a muon

broken canopy

broken canopy
#

Yea

#

Dead pixels are dead. They never come back.

#

Hot pixels are just pixels that will be stuck on for a little while. Cold pixels are pixels that don’t get activated easily

floral ledge
#

ohh i always thought they were the same thing

broken canopy
#

Yeah hot pixels are temperature based

#

The higher the temperature, the easier it is for current to leak in to a particular pixel

floral ledge
#

ohh makes sense

#

ill try the muon detection thing it sounds rly cool

broken canopy
#

Its pretty fun yeah. I’ll be doing another run today.

#

Hoping for that ever elusive shower

floral ledge
#

do the rates correspond with CMEs and solar activity?

broken canopy
#

and other black holes

#

there may be slightly more during high solar activity, but you wont notice it.

broken canopy
#

cosmic rays are there during the night too

solid pendant
#

would this be a muon strike? @broken canopy

broken canopy

Nice to know thanks 👍
