Thanks ☄️
bro is NOT making it to perihelion
@tame minnow converted
I'm still gonna be rooting for it
CRACKET FTW!11!11!
🥺
lemme chuck that into gimp gimme 29 seconds exactly
@tame minnow
le 135mm
Not likely. Probably closer to love joy
Nicee
Still fricking cloudy for me
It was clear all day long and the moment the sun set, clouds went in...
\
me
Even some mid northerners too
I think I may be able to get something
u can
im lat 37 so idk
ohh
45N here
May be able to get smth as well
lemme check stellarium for when i can first see s1 (assuming it survives)
november 5th-6th at the earliest :(
lemme check how lovejoy looked at a similar distance to the sun
suboptimal
comet?
Ouch
I mean, it is behind the milky way
So from dark skies it should be pretty neat
not just because of the brightness
its capturing that when its 3 degrees above the horizon
in twilight
Yeah actually that kinda sucks
But we have hope for the cracket!1!!1!!11!
(Please survive and crack something later)
cracket my beloved
like look at this crap
and when its more visible for me, lovejoy looked like that
just twilight lol
Yea
Not good lol
But it should be neat photographically if imaged carefully
And we should be able to see the tail at least
*if it survives
Yea ofc
Tbh A3 would have looked pretty much like a big kreutz if it hadn't been for the moon
long low surface brightness tail?
Yea
(Bray Falls)
comes directly from the sun, fades rapidly, long tail
Yea
as long aa you didn't see the morning pass it would prolly look similar to a sungrazer lol
*the orbital speed wouldn't match
Yea
*because like, it isnt a sungrazer
Ofc
i don't think il be able to image cracket though:(
Me neither most probably
oh god only 8 days until perihelion
Yeah
33 🤑
ok nvm its a morning only object
comet has been shot
why u shoot it what it do
what is 342p on
I cant find anywhere where i can show my picture, I suppose I could post it here.
C/2023 A3, 45 min exposure
@elder bay can u pls makke it 16bit tiff with gimp
oops i replied u
why did you rely to me and ping someone else lol
accident
I cant do it rn, im going to sleep
i can do it though
oh gn man
Good night
ok thx
yh bc graxpert dislikes it as it is rn
did u do it?
seems like graxpert doesnt know what to do with it?
gonna make sure i used the right file
brother in christ i didnt ask u to denoise it
i think it was a 16 bit tiff file though?
gimp is the solution tho
just try it annd see if it works
ok yep confirmed it was a 16 bit tiff?
bruh wtf is wrong with it tthen
ok if it wworks
Wow
YEAH I FINALLY SAW IT
Through the clouds but still
Nice tail and green core through the telescope
Lots of altitude clouds
you saw even color, niiice
I am being reminded how much of my cpu pixinsight is able to use xD
doesnt matter lmfaooo
shat
did hale bopp even have an anti tail that long after perihelion
Wooo
yes
oh damn it did
News on s1?
Not looking good
i dont even know at this point
its somehow defied any expectation
thankfully perihelion is only in 8 days or so
so at least we dont need to predict much
What is that
I mean
That's a comet
But why black and white
inversed
what do you want it to be
What?
here's every pic of a3 I took today bc it's finally clear in the uk
it will be hard to find a3, but yed prior/posterior, Lambda ophiuci and kappa ophiuci are all in the pics too (reference stars I used to make sure it's a3 im lookin at)
wait no one of them is a nearby region
ignore the first one in the group of 10
yoo
Sori
this image has been elongated
but its fine
How is S1 doing?
somewhere between bad and horrible
It’s not all over yet
It’s till it clear whether it’s a goner
Or not
pretty close though lol
eh only 5 days until perihelion
6*
Comet is still pretty easily visible naked eye
sir you live in bortle 2
wasnt it 1
Plane window
wicked
a3 ma3nia (asghkjdkeh)
on some it will be harder to find but yea
(taken with funi binocs)
turning your screen brightness up makes it easier to pick out a3 especially in the dimmer ones
Best comet antitail
6
12
3
A3
12p
13p
12p, hale bopp (inverted), 13p, ztf, Panstarrs, A3
only like 2 people shot it lol
I missed it sadly
same
I promised myself to not miss another
have you missed another?
it does count
clipped unpog
the fu
eh but it looked like a needle
Technically ztf. But that was my dad. I was just kinda helping
nevermind
ive shot c/2020 f3 neowise, c/2023 h2, 12p, 62p, c/2021 s3, 144p, 13p, c/2023 a3, tried to shoot 479p but i guess it wasnt visible
this man captured walking noise too
why does media call an antitail rare
no it fkn isnt
we saw it so many times alr 💀
to be fair the 2020's have had an unusual amount of bright anti tails
yea
Has 2024 been a big year for comets @lavish lark Or can I expect this for most years ?
its been a pretty good year
2025 is dry in terms of comets
Man
large portion of the year with none above 10th mag
like several months
might be a naked eye on at the end though
Honestly a comet like olbers would be great. The ion tail looked sick
Man!!?
like mars gets a better view
*in the inner solar system
*we get a better view than neptune
What about haumea
pretty crazy huh
How are the news for 2024 s1?
nah
plus since its getting harder to observe im not sure more info will even come in
Yep I saw that, I was wondering if there was more certainty on either of the possibilities
im guessing no
but its like 15 degrees from the sun right now
Comet is getting pretty faint to my eyes now but is still a 2 degree tail roughly
its at 14 degrees of elongation so not much
invisible to everybody
why it's tail like that
someone needs to tell me what 13p is on bc I need some of it
That was an old pic
13p is gone alr

Wow
What tracking mount
gcam mod??
what phone do u have
OnePlus @compact bronze
ohh
Wow
It stacks and then combines and gives big exposures?
Yes
Any news about the cracket comet?
Poofed
😔
im pretty sure it's trying to do what lovejoy did but is failing horribly
lmfao why are all the youtubers just now making shorts about C/2023 A3
its like 10 days too late
wait what lmao
If it was like a long report or minidocumentary like what Dylan O'Donell or AstroBackyard usually do I would understand
But yea shorts is going a bit too far
fr
yea they're going "if u don't go to like B3 or smth this weekend you'll miss it!1!!1!1!" as if it wasn't far brighter and cooler the days before 😭
its almost like bright comets are rare\
i think we just got spoiled this year
yea
2 naked eye comets in a year is pretty good
pons wasn't really naked eye tho
it got to mag 3.6 at one point
it was in the north
so i guess it depends on location
you mean post vs pre?
same
get to see the corpse fly in
cant wait for s1 to actually be in negative magnitudes because f*ck you
to be fair you wouldent of even been ableto see very well in the first place
its mainly positioned for the southern hemisphere
yeah
@lavish lark im re prossesing some old a3 data
i quite like the blown out core
whats ur opinion?
it was clicped to begin with
oh
like how much less clipped
i dont think much detail got lost lol
back then this was actualy fairly detailed
it was sooooo flat
didn't start developing detail till after perihelion
real
restacked
and its no longer cliped
and yeah
no detail
at all
a bit of nucleus shadow
Might aswell put this here
and even then its what
mag 11
😭
God s1 and g3 better do something cool
apparently e1 weizerchos might be preparing something
isnt s1 just gonna disintegrate
u think g3 is gonna live to see perihelion or is it gonna flop like s1
lol me neither
I only have pics of a3 across 3 days I could see it
even tho I couldve gone for it since the 12th
(uk activities)
unless we get more comets like a3 coming our way* we'll have to wait until 2028 to see literally anything (22P/Kopff and 19P/Borrelly)
-# * *God I hope this is true
That tiny like at the bottom right
Yes
yeah no way in hell that is gonna even be binoculars visible
let alone naked eye or negative mag
the noise pattern is nearly as bright as it
cracket is not making it to perihelion lmao
and stellarium says NEGATIVE 5.23 for its perihelion
wait no not -5.23
-5.49
-# stellarium mobil the cracket comet supporter
80x30sec exposures from bortle 4 backyard, carbonstar 150 (needed to collimate, which is why the stars are bad), asi533 mc pro, uv/ir cut filter. Processed in pixinsight.
how would you even go about photographing 2024 s1 before its breakup since its going to live and die so close to the sun?
its dead.
ye
you cant for a while since its very close to the sun
kinda what i thought - it would have had to survive perihelion to become imagable, yeah?
thats dead
its dead
It’s also miles from the sun. Remember it comes for closest approach for literally a few hours.
yea
Do you fact check anything you say ?
Yes
has a pretty long tail (a few frames "stacked" manually)
Thing is that the coma is elongated because the nucleus fully fragmented
We’ll just probably see a completely deformed comet by the time it enters in LASCO 2
and yet stellarium mobile still predicts -5.49
fr
it wasn't until like 2 days before a3 perihelion they finally got the right data
i think that's a3 not s1
and s1 is definitely NOT that
He wasn’t talking about the image above
ª
I think
the nucleus has already been torn to shreds lol
the shreds will be torn to shreds
my god

i can 1920s-1940s jazz any sentence
1920s-1940s jazz this
im going to send you into intergalactic space
How did you get this?
Any spicy comet
Yoyo any major news abt comets? Did S1 survive?
its quite dead
Ayyyyyyyyyy
maybe brighter 🤔
That antital was actually pretty sharp
Also I thought comets were always blue/green, I guess not this one?
oooh the tip is actually blue here, that's a great shot!
Thank you!
composed of methane
and otehr shit
it depends on the comet
dust is white, so dust rich comets (like c/2011 l4 and neowise) dont have much in the way of blue and green
(neowise did display a notable green coma after perihelion)
we seeing it edge on
that andgle makes it look like its gonna crash into the sun lmao
I mean, it basically does.
no like were not gonna see it outbound
bc it fell into the sun
nah its not hitting the sun
get close
but not hitting
Very! 😄
i thought the whole circle was the sun 😭
Nah
That’s the disk that blocks the sun
So you can well actually see the stuff around it
ohh ok
Sort of like an artificial solar eclipse
Did it hide? 👀
no its dead
I think it was at perihelion or at least very close
wrong comet
this one is s1
the one yout thinking of is a3
wich was indeed at perahelion on the 27th
whos telling them
so much for this then lmoa
So i guess no comet of the decade
i was left pretty happy with a3
Except for the clouds that ruined the the best moment I was petty happy as well! My first comet except for ztf that I barely saw next to the full moon
Not an interesting dust trail and hardly any visible ion tail but the sharp antitrail was pretty
He was not the main character
clouds and moon were a bummer but i still saw it naked eye, first time ever, quite pleased 🎉
Same! I saw it in a glimpse between the clouds when it was still in sunset's light but amazing to see!
And I got the auroras twice so I will not complain
I only saw it naked eye. During perihelion
On sept 29
Processing A3 pics rn
How to capture comets that way
How to capture comets with sun stoppers
Step one:
Make solar observatory.
Step 2:
Launch said solar observatory in to space. (space X will be able to assist you in this)
Step 3:
Profit?
How do space agencies get profit?
Added to task list
They get the satisfaction of getting images of the sun.
So you only invest in space agencies, space agencies can't work like a business model?
Space exploration and whatnot is funded with tax money.
Companies like SpaceX make money from companies that get tax money paying them to launch stuff.
Other companies pay to LAUNCH STUFF?
oh welp that shit died
where r u finding these
thats a cosmic ray
oh nvm
cosmic ray
yeah
anyone has imags of S1 being vapourised?
soho does #1160693147521777715 message
thats instruments that soho has
c2 is the one where the comet died in
(narrower one)
I was hoping for multiple fragments to fly in different directions like a blowing up meteor but it just got dimm really fast
I’m sure it did
Tbh
Probably but it was to small to see
think it more just ceased to exist
it quite literally faded out of existence
imagine the dust bits left form a meteor shower a few years later
I think 5D Borsen sid
orbit doesn't get close to earth
aw
STELLARIUM IT DOENST EVEN EXIST ANYMORE
it exists, just in a few more pieces than before
you're not wrong but I now want to make you into a few more pieces than before
-# /j /j /j /J /J /J AAAAA-
why is the edge of the video not at the edge of the video
Because the subs are stabilized... that's why the black border appears
ohh ok
aadaefcrwcdwc
Cloudz
Ohh
only 2 days or so until a3 reaches max elongation and gets the highest in the sky
long 2 and a bit month descent afterwards
We need more comets to pass by 😩
g3?
as ikeya seki said,
cracket comet did not continue the s1 legacy
-# (context: ikeya seki's full name is C/1965 S1 (Ikeya-Seki))
Is that a new comet? :oo
no it's been around quite a while
C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), go look it up
Actually ikeya was the only good s1
The rest just poofed lmao
Ison first, then S1
So yea S1 legacy is basically vanishing
nah theres just a new s1 legacy
because in the 2000s, ever sungrazer called s1 has died
real
haha ikea haha
next 95p perihelion boutta be lit
How long? 😮 😮
But probably pretty dim
56.25 degrees of elongation at about 6.5th mag
Sounds great for imaging (not rlly)
When is that for?
next 95p chiron perihelion is in 2046 at 15th magnitude
yeah thats the joke lol
Yea
man shame it doesnt approach any closer to the sun than 8.5 au
actually its prolly extremely devoid of anything volitile that isnt water
Ah
so it would be nothing nothing nothing "hits water line"
Oof
once it hit the water line it would be brighter than hale bopp though
(probably)
(i dunno im not a cometologist)
(prolly a bit before the water line)
(nothing in this case being an absolute mag of 5.4 so still pretty bright)
lmao
wha 95 p
faint comet orbiting far away, next perihelion is 2046
15th magnitude
that is the joke
(that people would be hyped for that)
next 96p perihelion should actually be somewhat neat though
do you notice anything off about this
No atmo, wrong date, sun and stars visible at the same time, weird thing much brighter than venus above the sun, etc
lmao
dude
you're overcomplicating everything
I set the location to a3
also the sun being in cetus never crossed you as odd?
Fair
So you tell me this will integrate into 50° comet?? 😄
*it is 50 degrees away from the sun
not 50 degree long tail
i mean it might have a 50 degree long tail
with a surface brightness measured in photons per hour
elongation is distance from the sun
lol
It'll still be a fire photo of milky way + comet
what bortle
im jealous u were able to get that while I cant in my neighborhood 💀
ohh
id be cooked wth lp in my image
prob xuz im shooting where street lamps are
yea
we only have to wait like 2 or 3
bc 19p will do the funny, even tho it'll only be 5th mag
aerith.net only puts it at 7 mag
b r
uh what other comets are doing funny
https://www.aerith.net/comet/future-n.html not many (as shown by this page)
yeah thats normal
the site hasnt been updated since like 2005
you can just click advanced
http://www.aerith.net/comet/future-n.html thsi might work actually
(http instead of https)
uh what about 22p
yeah that should get barely above 5th mag
that'll maybe do then, even if it's 3 and half years away
br
let's hope another a3 happens like
idk
C/2025 C2 or something
and it perihelion in early 2026
or something
idk
wouldve likely been discovered already :(
*i mean some comets slip through the cracks
C/2025 H1?
*c/2023 p1 was a good example
What about g3?
Like I mean you can’t see it
I will be able to
Quite easily
(Southern hemisphere flex)
wasnt S1 also one
s1 died
that wasnt the point tho
S1 was discovered 1-2 months before perihelion
or death date
im like 80% sure it had an outburst prior to being discovered
because its both probably not surviving and even if it does survive it still sucks lol
the fact it didn't get much brighter until the next outburst (which is bad) and the fact that it had outbursts at all
yea
If it survives it’s probably gonna get pretty bright
path looks alright too
(i think your just salty you cant see it in the north)
have you checked in stellarium?
because i have
even if it gets much brighter than expected
its still at best a 4th to 10th mag object on getting to 25 degrees of elongation
not for naked eye when its 5 degrees above the horizon lol
(in the northen hemisphere
Isn't stellarium a bit inaccurate with comet magnitudes?
yea
(in this case its pretty accurate though)
Ah alright
yep chats dead
hahahahaah like itll be visible for me 😭

an unexpected surprise
just wait for another big comet, they apper to come about once a year
the next one that has a good chance of surviving is c/2024 e1, at the end of 2025
2025 has several months in a row with nothing above 10th mag
its southen only and has a peak mag of 4th or so
half a year ago i thought comets are like once in a lifetime things, one every 50yrs and nos if only it wasn't desintegrated by the sun we wuld have 2 in one month
They happen all the time
We had 3 good ones this year
12p. 13p. A3
i mean it depends how bright you want a comet how often they come
naked eye is yearly or so
15th mag is always
3rd mag or brighter is approximately every 5 years
some rarely seen photos of arend roland
(sourced from https://britastro.org/cometobs/1956r1/thumbnails.html )
looking ahead to 333p linear in december, looks like the bright inner core (might) be around 13.8th mag (total mag of 9.8 or so) (this is the previous apparition)
*i very well could be interpreting that graph wrong
o
c
d
Is this what comet chat has become
somehow despite my attempts to keep it on topic all my threads devolve into shitposting lol
yes
reaper bird shall conquer
can you not tho
like i want comets to be pure and about comets
Skibidi Ohio comet
can i not have one serious thread????
no
nah
when a thread is dying we'll use just about anything to keep it alive
Yeah, anyway i tried imaging the comet and it became so tiny
Guiding didnt work so i gave up on imaging
what comet is that ?
He's a big chungus He's a big chunky boi Such a big bun, yes We are so overjoyed To have a big chunky boi A big and wonderful chungus such as he Oh such as he He's a big chungus He's a big chunky boi Such a big bun, yes We are so overjoyed To have a big chunky boi A big and wonderful chungus such as he Oh such as he Huh Buns come in all shapes and all sizes This one has so many surprises I've never seen a giant quite like him There's no one like him Nobody like chungus Huh Get the game for PS4 For a limited time Huh Don't miss what it has in store You're running out of time Play the game of the year The game with that colossal boi He's a big chungu
i hate myself
Is A3 still worth it to image
Ok sanku
its abt mag 8-9 rn i think
Dangerous
if 333p gets perihelion before it reaches mag 10 I'll go for both
-# /j lmoa
id say yes if you missed it
Yep I did
C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) on September 2nd
i keep on forgetting nishimura exists
What that
a comet im guessing
Any comets that I can capture with my phone
like with a telescope?
or just bare phone
Crop
*in terms of brightness
Easy to capture
that one is probably just poofing apart though
It's too close to the horizon
rip
From my area
i guess theres halley
*2061
hey how bright is 333p rn
12th mag or so right now
peak of 10th mag or so
oh k
sadly its quite diffuse at max so the brightest part would likely be around 13th mag (compared to the 9.8th mag of all of it)
if the hdr astronomy tail simulation became public I would mess around with it an for an unreasonable amount of time
this thing
like im messing with this (https://www.comet-toolbox.com/FP.html) and this is crude in comparison
br
it says 2007 in the corner my gamer
really doesnt
Ik
im gonna launch pluto into a sungrazing orbit just to get yall to talk about comets
Love how quickly people go back to shitposting
id rather it not be though
like theres polls and t coronae borealis
not as many ppl are checking t crb often bc they know its not gonna boom for a while
more ppl checking comets because new comets can be discovered, some of which might have the potential to become bright
"made" a "simulation" of c/2024 g3's tail during perihelion, no idea how accurate it will be, (dont know how light it assumes the dust is, dont know how accurate the dust lifetime is, especially since the dust lifetime changes with time, and i cant do that kinda math in my head, or in general)
br
Ask him! He is very nice but may say no because it has no interface or something
ive already emailed him once about making it public and its a well known fact you can't email people more than once
Yeah it does take him a while to respond,
No one checks their email everyday anymore
I waited a month then sent him another email and apologized if he had already received it and my old email just got lost in spam
did you use the questions thingy
that got me a response in like 3 days
Yes
skill issue on your part then ig
When is the next bright comet coming
):
I now have a power station and can image comets
how bright?
in the northern hemisphere (that i know of) the next already discovered one is halley in 2061
next one that might get kinda bright is 22p in 2028 (for the northern hemisphere)
c/2024 e1 gets to 5th mag in early 2026 but thats only south
technially c/2024 g3 might get that bright
small chance of c/2024 g3 overperforming and being that bright for southerners
but pretty much not known
Damn
it is hard to predict comets yk
theres also just none discovered yet lol
comet prediction isnt too bad for something like neowise
i mean a3 was expected lol
performed pretty close to predictions
mots of them are unpredictable
but big ones lile this are easy to calculate trajectpry yk
if it is ot its not going to vaniah by the sun
?
if you go by like the 5000 comets soho has discovered they all die and thats predictable
if you go by the other average comet, it gets to like 16th mag and survives
dont you remember the last comet? there was a poll if it will survive or not
c/2024 s1?
i think so
yea that was a sungrazer that dispalyed weird behavior
that one that was annoingly close to sun
by the 18th of october its fate was pretty close to being sealed
God I hope we get another a3
halley in 2061
hopefully a different one comes earlier
that's what I mean
I hope we get another a3 that comes around... like literally any time within the next 5 years would be fine
yeah i know that lol
yk what screw it
imma just slap a comet name and see if it gets bright 3 years down the line
uhhh
c/2025 h2
so that would be discovered around april, lemme roll some random number generators for a 2026 apparition
its not naked eye and on the wrong side of the sun
imagine there actually ends up being a c/2025 h2
ouh
pretty likely actually
would it be possible for an end of 2025 apparition?
no that would make it dimmer (without a very close earth encounter)
comets tend to get discovered around 21st mag
ouh
so the farther away it is from perihelion the more intrinsically bright it is
(on average)
should there be a c/2025 h2 I will refer you to this convo
my 2nd hope is that its a sungrazer with an absolute magnitude of 2
you said a c2025 h2 would be discovered in April right
around that time
dont know the letters by heart
wait lemme check
I'm back
a is first half of January
b is second half
c is first half of Feb
etc etc
so h would be
uhh
second half of april
so I'm betting for a c/2025 h2
uhh
April 29th
Messing with colour
ah so c/2024 e1
for people in the southern hem
*technically its like febuary 2026
i forgot the southern hemisphere exists outside of australia :((
oh I also spelled it wrong
damn you autocorrect autocorrecting to the wrong spelling
Keep me out of this
no i was talking about the other australian
Texas

where is olbers
ujbthavghcjf
in that pic*
i think its here
bump
Bro is doing what you are supposed to do when no one reacts to your post in #1023613540587810846 😭
i needed a screenshot of the comets thread and didnt feel like scrolling
s
☄️
s for s1 (rip)
ohhhhh thats what cauused that (maybe)
my theory is striations (like in the image above) in the dust trail that forms the anti tail
not sure how accurate that theory is
but eh
are brighter comets (absolute mag not visually) more likely to have an anti tail?
not really
*a little bit
its about having dust at the time of the orbital plane crossing
thats the orbital plane
actually comet hyakutake (c/1996 b2) is a good example of this
ohhhhh\
earth intersected the orbital plane just like it did for a3
but no anti tail was visible due to not having enough dust to form one
*i still dont know entirely why anti tails form
ah okay i understand em know more or less yipee
small olbers
its an illusion
they dont form
tail spreads out and it looks different in our pov
My theory is it’s like that because of the way it is.
thats prolly more likely lol
aware of that
afaik it's probably dust left from the comets path, too heavy to be blown behind it
aware of that as well
I think hale bopp may have deserved the win because it had several anti tails visible throughout its time being bright lol
(that was in december 97)
its not a classical anti tail though
oh hell yeah, more comet tail simulations
this is probably a sign i need to check my email more often
wait if we intersected a3's orbit does that mean a3 meteor shower
no, the tail did not extend far enough out
awh
have an image of hyakutake that you certainly havent seen before
Kewl
g3 from today, whatever happens to this comet will be quick
