#Comets

Today was so underwhelming lol
๐ญ
Kinda sucked but I had to gamble and try to check it out
Luckily we have enough time till the end of month, right?
Has to be some good sky at some point
dude i live in the uk
there's been times where I haven't seen the moon for over a months because of how cloudy it is
I've missed at least 100 things already just because of clouds
yeah, I feel like czechia isn't that good place for astronomy either
and astrobiscuit is in london and survives somehow!
๐ฎ
S1 for early november
again, like hell i am seeing that
it's a sungrazer
that gets a weird angle
and is only bright for 2 days
I will not be able of seeing it probably
Edited a friend's image to show what I could see
And that is still better than my observation
๐ฅฒ
It's too northern it's only like 7 degrees when the sun sets
And there's buildings covering the first 10 degrees of the horizon
love this image
That's possible? I thoughts the movement of the comet might screw with the stacking process as the frames are aligned by the stars I believe?
More involved preprocessing
You stack comet separately
Could you send a link to a tutorial? :o
Not my image first of all
Width of the FOV is 23degs
Pretty sure that the tail is around 30 degs, probably a bit less but still
hot damn
Cooooooooool
How wideangle is that?
What I did last time with a comet was register all photos, remove stars from them, align them with the comet, subtract background, add stars back
it was a much fainter comet, so I had a lot of very noisy photos
not the best photo, but glad i saw it anyway ๐
yall are getting fantastic images
this comet takes u back to neowise doesnt it
antitail so long
i think im like 30% of that lol
no idea
ive stolen some random guys thread
How to capture this blackhole.thingy
Bro same situation why is that happening to us
Why is the comet not visible to me? Even in the brightest times and no clouds, bortle 7 and right direction
are there any streetlights or something?
No
wack
thats too early
I stacked around 60 frames still couldn't see anything
Ehh
and also are you sure thats the western horizon?
When should I capture today
i started seeing it when the sun was -12 degrees below the horizon
Let's do it again
also i doubt that that is a b7 lol
I tried 8 times
That's not b7?
can you send like a photo during normal darkness
I'll send u today
*doesnt have to be recent
just need a reference for what "darkness" looks like
at least b8
hard to tell because of jpeg compression but thats not b7
It could be that
nah thats not a b7
Because that bortle data is from around 2015-2017
Lol
yeah if theres been any development in that time then it would increase it substantially
A lot of development ๐๐๐ญ
ok yeah b8 minimum
I don't want my city to be more developed
maybe b9
Alrr
how faint star can you get naked eye?
A lot of stars
Stars are bright
Not very faint
Not very bright
but yeah b8
i dunno use venus and arcturus as a reference
Or maybe long exposures
So what do u use
Same
For how long do you guys think the antitrail will last?
Did you do all that manually or is there some script?
Imma try shooting the comet tonight as the weather is clear for the first time in forever
I think I used some comet tracker in pixinsigh itself, not manually
but I am not sure now, it's been a while ๐
Our weather might be ok tonight as well!!!!
well
might
@lavish lark the video is for u
tried it again
Wooo
Bortle level?
busy city lol
@lavish lark
But it'll last an entire week for sure
Soho still shows the anti-tail obscuring the sun
Tail is defined
i doubt it
That's what it shows
I don't think it'll die out
Imma shoot one day ahead
And do Wednesday with my 533
Also my 801 subs on the comet got deleted cuz I raged
Star alignment was just not working
It's too cloudy for me anyways but Thanks
i mean think of how faint it is now
I got it in 1 sub buddy
1.6 second iso 1000
It's pretty bright
wuh
Ye
why is my transparency so bad
idk ๐
took 3m to get it
do you mean the thin spike antitail or the broader one?
yeah no thats not surviving a week lmao
shit
it was barely visible on the 12th
Now it is
Yea well the tail was changing directions so
Still there
gotten way fainter though
Hm
plus i dont think thats representative of the visible part of the comet
Gonna go monitor the comet today as well
I've been tracking it and measuring bros brightness
wheres a celestialsail or descending when you need one
It got brighter here for me then it was Monday and then dipped down back to normal but visually visible still
they're the smart ones
actually lemme check the tail simulation
(it way overestimated how bright the antitail would be, so if its not there in a week its almost certainly long gone)
ok its prolly gone
By 23rd
But it'll be around this week
From 7 until 13 October 2024, ESA/NASAโs SOHO (https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/SOHO) spacecraft recorded Comet C/2023 A3 (TsuchinshanโATLAS), the second brightest comet (https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Rosetta/Comets_an_overview) it has ever seen. Meanwhile, large amounts of material were being spewed ...
yea
Good
prolly another few days
Loll
Guys please explain what the hell is that disk
Uh what disk
.
That's the anti-tail
What's that
Yes
That's the line
2.5
Lmao
the sun blocker?
that blocks the sun
because the sun is pretty bright
yeah and its only going to get fainter compared to the main tail
smth like high B6 - Low/Mid B7
idk Bortle level varies a lot for me
B9 to my eastern horizon, but zenith/slightly west of zenith with very favorable atmospheric conditions can go down to B5 (in terms of seeing; the surrounding light pollution still has a very major effect on images taken with a cam)
Let's gooo i too got to see it c':
imagine the views if the moon wasnt blasting
Oh that's a sun blocker..
Never knew those exists
Same
A3 Tsuchinshan ATLAS
visually?
No, just in camera
ah
I didn't have binoculars, so saw the comet just as a faint fuzz ๐
ah lol
single overcooked photo, looking forward to the stack ๐
wtf why does my 3m stack have so little signal
like its on par with that
1984
*from yesterday
Depends on light pollution a lot probably
๐ฎ What is that betweenthe comet and lens? ๐
millions of bees
billions even
mayhaps trillions
๐
bortle?
also ยฟ????ยฟ??)?
got that much signal in 2s???
is there something like horribly wrong with my dslr
I guess bortle 6
id guess the same
but facing away of most of prague
๐
it took up a similar portion of the frame lol
it's the all famous samyang 135mm, on APS-C
also on aps c lol
now what was my work process with pixinsight... I don't remenber anything ๐
stacking isn't turning out super well (should prob look for a tutorial lmfao) but ykw I'm happy with this (single 13s exposure; f/4.5 and iso 400)
forgot to post my stuff here
i might try it tonight but its still stupidly low and cloudy
It won't get much higher
Maybe 1.5x higher at most
And it'll be dimmer
How long after sunset until it's visible?
fr? I live fairly north (~30ยฐN, not super far north but yk) and the comet's still well over the horizon for me
I'm-36 deg
North guys got rlly lucky after perihelion and before perihelion it was about the same height
About 45 mins
Just barely binocular visible Rn
Getting more contrast by the second
U didn't get it in early October ?
Yeah I got it then
I'm talkin bout tonight
I really want to capture the stupidly long tail
Doesn't look that good from the images I'm getting Rn
OK now the tail is starting to show
Should have used the dslr for early October aswell
What focal length is this?
APS-C 135 mm f/2.0

It was too narrow for the comet really, the tail was sooo long ๐
I have some 50mm f/2.8 data too
Yeah I will try shooting it this evening, but I am thinking of what focal length to use APS-C 50 might be too wide, right?
depends
if you want it nicely against some landscape, 50mm might be nice
if you want real detail and the antital (if it's still there), then something tighter
I have a 55-210 lens, I might stop around 75
The problem is, I need to leave the house around 7PM, so I won't see the restults until it's too late to change anything
To change what? You can adjust everything at the site, right? Focal length, focus, exposure time ๐
Well, I don't know how late 7 pm is for you
Nono that's not what I mean. I have to go to work at 7PM, shortly after sunset. So when I set up everything the comet won't be visible yet, and after I come back from work to see the results, it will already be way over the horizon
So there will be some big guessing
ooo I see
That's a lot of guessing indeed, need to have that automated
in that case I would go more wideangle side to be safe ๐
75 sounds nice
Nice one! For me it was like 17ยฐ above horizon when it appeared yesterday
damn thats very high
I was surprised how high it was
Will I be able to spot it today?
(tried 9 times,9 days)
It's day 10
And cloudy
Lesseeee
Attempt 10th- failed
sad
@lavish lark How long should each sub be for the comet if tracked
It is there still
Just faint ish
antitail
try again lol
how much integraation?
๐ญ
4 sec exposures of 60-70 subs
y was it so dim then?????
I DONT KNOW!!!
thatss really weird
bruh
clouds?
all clear
bro lives in b80 or smth
๐คฃ
same here
dang
i took 40smth 11sec pics forr mine
.
WOAH
i went with 25s for 180mm and it wasn't trailed
Is longer then that gonna blow out the core
yea it was actually blown out lol
*just a few pixels
might as well plop it here
How is it that everyone got a better pic than mee ๐ญ
respect tho
this is amazing pic
I didn't even get a pic so yeah don't complain too much lol
Stupid decaying hurricanes dropping storms over here
damn i feel bad for you
hope you get some clear skies early enough to see the comet
At least I got a privileged observation of neowise back in 2020
But yeah that 30ยฐ tail?
Not a chance
yea i got it small cuz the tail on the 13th had that size and that was the only day i could capture it since every other day its cloudy
its unreasonable how long the tail of this comet is, wild
at least you can image all the lame post naked eye stuff
is the brightness gonna fall off fast now?
would prolly still have a long a** tail even then
Yeah, much larger than expected
yeah probably
like 4th mag by the 20th
Yeah
jeez
Idrc about images
sadge
I want to see it
forward scattering is dying
same
welp, should still be pretty cool on pics so im fine with it
I do take neat stuff not to bragg but
Yeah I want my own sensors to see it
in terms of naked eye?
I swear, NOTHING surpassed the feeling
yes
Back on July 18th 2020
i can relate
i think the peak for me was the 14th
*possibly due to circumstances
but that was a long ass tail visually
I got to see it from a bortle 2
Moonless
Seing that silvery thing just hanging
It very much surpasses any image
i tried getting some pics yesterday but that stupid saharian powder had to cover the sky ofc
society if a3 was in a new moon:
it is kind of a bummer that the moon is blasting but what can ya do
Yeah
like imagine if all of that was naked eye
*20 degrees
And even if I don't, even if tomorrow I get some clear gaps
It won't be that good I think
I highly doubt I see those 30 degrees people have seen these days
Perhaps by sunday 20 we could get some lovejoy-like stuff from dark skies
But that's about it
I doubt it will even be spectacular tomorrow anymore
But yeah
And yea 20th could be interesting
*for like 20 minutes until the moon rises
But yeah I missed the whole show
ill try tho
14th and 15th
Im sorry for you man
Eh
i wish you can see it atleast tomorrow
ik
but it will be cool anyway
And it was a conspicuous brush of light
got like a 10 degree tail from b7 lol
If only my binocs weren't broken
yeah i got 1-2 degrees on the 12th lol
loll
Yeah 2nd to 14th was shitty
i think the 12th may have been the coolest day to image it
Evening days were insane naked-eye
WAIT
because of all the imageable detail
Lucky
I have to make sure of the weather since I have to travel quite some distance to even image
Lucky
Tail was huuuge
i wish...
It's like 7th for me (if I see it) but only 2nd naked eye
Actually
I did kinda see it on the 14th
Punniest star-like, almost undiscernible thing ever
simply become minnesota pilled next time
May have even been my imagination
Website?
zoom.earth
Kk
(thats the url)
*days 12th-18th
Oh okay
So far it seems that 17th and 20th may be okay
Unfortunately I missed the prime
But oh well
Awesommme
Ok yeah I thought it suddenly got clear but nvm
It doesn't look hopeful
WOOOAHHHHHH
Ikr
Can u show ur one
here
Bro u got much much much much better than mine
Feeling shame to even post here
hey you did see it though
No..
Yeee
Tysmm dude
I'll take calibration frames and then stack and process
Ah
Yeahhh
(in my defense im not very smart)
๐๐
its gonna be like a year before i stop processing this data is it
My try at stacking the comet, def not the best edit, but im just happy i saw a comet :D
Bortle 6 over light dome x.x
Caught it. But the clouds were moving fast so I can't stack all the footage. Tomorrow will be my last try
me and my firend, got 84 15sec iso 100 exposures of ATLAS but DSS cant register more than 2 stars, is there a way to align them by hand in other software?
(random frame for feferance)
i mean why not
(it's very very hard without a tracking mount)
Not for me
Sony alpha 3000
But I'll use my phone on that
android?
Ofc
deepskycamera right
No
Pro mode
I've used that
in it you can set a delay between each image i think
so in that time you can move the scope to put the comet back where it should be
why dont you use it anymore?
Ik!
Because,it takes a lot of time
And not user friendly
they revamped the ui
OH?
you only need to know where a few things are
I'm gonna download it then
if youre talking about the pause between every image thats unfixable i think
its like ok now
I mean I have big fingers,it was hard for me to adjust
WOWHHH
its just sliders and buttons
literally the same as pro mode
Google the old version
i used the old version
๐๐๐๐
there was nothing wrong with it
Omg I can't I just cant
๐ญ๐ญ๐ค
what the protostar are you talking about
๐ญ๐
unless im remembering it very badly it was still just sliders and buttons
i had no issue using it
Forgive me Grand
it didnt look great but it was usable
Not for me
I downloaded
It's 138421 times better now
very specific
Loll
Try siril's guide on comets? That's what I used
registering the comet?
yeah it didnt do that
u sure bud?
sure thats real?
yes
its a stack lmao
*bad dbe on purpose
damn
also i have no idea why dss decided to crop that much
that is not a b8
I live b7, near a b8-9, and my sky is nowhere near as light as that
grah same
random storms just flying over me
holy double antitail
probably split
Strait up couldnโt find the comet
At all
Had to trouble trying to find it a few weeks ago
But now
Not even my camera could find it
Wayyy easier last month
una faccia una razza
damn im sure u would have gotten an incredible image
i got a good pic with antitail with my phone
its time for us in the northern hemisphere to have some fun lol
im really proud of it
Doble antitail?
how is that fair!
; (
the comet was best visible from the south anyway
yeah but it was flat and boring
bairly visable ion tail
and i couldnt even resolve that
i dint see an ion tail either
So what's thatt
I'll try
To stack it, DSS has a comed mode that allows for stacking the comet and background separately but for that it needs to see some stars and I only get 2
I had same issue of not enough stars being detected, luckily siril has settings where can u can test w to increases sensitivity
I guess with this comet it's pretty hard to deal with gradients, right?
Given how wideangle all photos are
Sirlil stacked 37 images and that's what's after an auto streatch, something weent wrong at the core of the comet but there is the anti tail visible even
b10
face it nikky
you live in the infamous yet truly rare bortle 10
where even seeing jupiter, Mars (opposition) and Venus becomes a challenge
DSS sucks
Use Siril
Oh my I may actually have a chance at the comet tonight
Sadly my chances of seeing it visually are over thanks to the moon
i didn't use starnet there
Yeah ik
Jupiter is very good
I mean can spot it
Easily
ik but
still
bortle 10
Sori
i saw it yesteday, moon comes up a bit after the moment of the comet becoming visible, there is a window tho some optics makes it way better, i used binoculars, it was incredible
Fair
I do want to see it naked eye since my binocs are broken
Perhaps I could use one of my finderscopes lmao
te comet is not the easiest to find, but when you do find it you just cant unsee it
Yea
Dw I've seen a comet naked eye before
And I am sure that A3 tonight will not surpass it lol
yeah
it's a really bright comet
when I called my family to look at it they couldn't see it
Was*
Not anymore unfortunately
Pretty sure that neowise will still be my best so far
then I showed them the exact location they were all shocked
But hey maybe the finderscope view is good lmao
yeah
Vas a intentarlo hoy? Estรก despejado en Madrid
En Madrid no
๐
Can confirm
He ido al sur de la zona de Toledo
Mirando a Extremadura
Por aquรญ pinta muy muy bien
This probably marks the end of my czech capture of this comet, now it'll only be cloudy
But it was fun!
Time to learn pixinsight again
I live just north of toledo but it's partially covered. Are you by any chance in the ASAAF whatsapp group
No way I have clouds only on the sunset side ๐ญ
Nope
I'm south of yebenes
At what mag it's Atlas now?
3-3.5th id estimate
very difficult to see naked eye yesterday
i manually stacked (added) 72 frames in gimp but without calibration frames it's garbage really
Yeah. At bortle 7 I could barely see it.
like 4th mag nucleus
Clouds gods are being benevolent to me today
had to use averted vision to even see the tail
hablas ingles por favor
I'm gonna try some untracked 1250mm photos. Apart from wide 50mm ones.
faint as balls
he returned to speaking english below, dont panic :D
is stellarium not accurate? says its 1.27
tf kinda stellarium you have
thats not accurate lol
i mean A3
someone asked about atlas, i assume thats c2023 a3
ohhh
apologies
i didnt see the message you replied too
but yeah a3 is also innacurate
okay
yes
i see it with the big telescope ๐
It got cloudy but I caught like 20 min of data. Thats a win for me. Also some spooky Moon photos
I
AM
DONE
i don't belive it could get any better
this shot was at 200mm fl
Oh yeah, that looks about my apsc 135mm
Nice up close shot!
so i captured this comet tsuchinshan atlas and i dont know how to properly edit the data and i failed after alot of tries
can anyone edit it for me?
750mm at 1.6crop factor
heres the tif file
Niice
I could see it
hell yeah
It was quite faint but it was there
Honestly I'll take that
Could trace 4-5 degrees at some point
Moon really washed out the tail
But yea it was visible
i think the transparency sucked last night
nucleus was as bright as alcor approximately
Was brighter in the image
(alcor is 4th mag)
think the show is over now pretty much
Yea definitely
comet: let me just outburst
Oh ok
whats happeninf then
no moon
ofc
the double antitail is gone
ikts back to a single tail
extremely weird
still dont trust it was fully real
plausible
but never appearing again is sus
yep
it a single sub proved it
yeah im not sure what artificial explanations there are
so it prolly is just real
yea
I never got to see it naked eye unfortunately, but tbh its the first comet I have ever imaged and I'm more than satisfied by that
Mb
Found some fellow spaniards, sorry
Single 10s exposure
yep thats a3
Tail was still around 20 degs photographically
Visually did not surpass 5
But yeah still neat
yeah id imagine that the long part of the tail only has like 3 days left to live
Yea
Sneak peak at my scope images
Will probably reuse some flat frames
I give the comet around mag 3
I was able to see it
pretty well
Still cloudy for me...
It was comfy to observe for like 40 mins until the moon rose more
ohh
Btw
May be a stupid question but despite my experience on AP I have a doubt abt something
ok
I overexposed some of the images yesterday with the comet
ok
the coma might be a bit clipped but it should work
Okay
I'll play with yhe data for quite a bit anyway
So yea
Planning to do a composite with foreground and stuff
ol yeah running the jpeg through graxpert (this is bad dont do this)
Those were 30s at f2.8 so I wanna make the most of the night
doesnt seem toooo bad
Or siril's background extractor
i say its bad because of the jpeg compression inbetween
you can dbe a comet just fine
I mean
It does look like an oversharpened 8 bit image
Lol
But yeah hopefully I should do just fine
the overexposed has given you the dynamic range of an 1880s film camera
siril dbe please
im done for rn
it was using a jpeg i dont think it could be good any way
fair
no way s1 is surviving to perihelion bruh
damn ๐
this comet busting and bursting
and then die
I mean it sure is fun as hell to watch this thing being on whatever it's on
this thing is so much more fun than g3
g3's just gonna puff away at 0.4 au like a coward
s1 is a girlboss
plays by her own rules
did u process my comet
โค๏ธ comet processing ๐ซ
How do you process a comet that is just over the sunset? I am planning on shooting the A3 this evening, but I am worried that I won't be able to stretch it well, because of the hue from the sun
the sun is below the horizon
Wow
Processing my footage rn
Hehehehe
idk how to process comets so I'm just leaving mine as is
I'm happy enough with it
what scope and camera have you used even integration time?
I didn't sadly
Woah
will callibration frames fix this?
Maybe, idk tbh
I heard that running noise needs dithering mostly
But maybe darks could do the job, idk
what did u do about it
It was mild so I could process it well
And GHS helped too
wut is that?
Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch
Some very advanced version of the curves tool basically
oh ok
heres a dif proccess
Cool
im kinda impressed my phone did that
Fair
Running noise
imaa take some darks to try tto fix that
Darks won't fix that
Dithering will
wesly has never ditthered he just takes callibration frames
Darks don't fix walking noise period
they remove thermal noise
They don't capture walking noise
Wesley probably has good pa or doesn't stretch as hard
That's cuz he has an astrocam and walking noise is much harder to appear
how much time do I have to image it
i just go until it sets
roughly how much time
like 45 minutes
what
?
i mean like how much time until it fades away
depends on how faint you will accept
like 6th-7th mag by november
like 10th-12th mag by december
damn
update: still haven't seen it yet ๐
Oof
Why is everyone so hyped about A3 now? Iโm on vacation now and will only be able to shoot it next weekend. Will it still be doable? According to Stellarium, yes. But idk how it will be in reality
Okay I looked it up - apparently rn is the only time itโs visible with a naked eye and binoculars, but for photography it should still be okay
why do I like ZTF more even if a3 was visible naked eye
i dont speak astronese, im just in the group ๐คท
media hype. there hasnt been a lot regarding this one
oh ๐ญ
that was my favorite cuz bro was easy to shoot
up at teh fcking meridian
This can be an album cover
Got this with my phone
Just finished this wonderful image
From October 17th
It might finally be happening!
Wtf is this LOL
In what kind of crack is this comet on, seriously
It's so damn amusing
I think we can officially nickname this guy as "The Crack Comet"
The Cracket
Fr
It's on some serious stuff rn
Like it just went from mag 13 to mag 7.5 in like 4 days
With several outbursts
Its so much brighter tonight wtf
Yeah idk what this thing is doing
That's insane
Yeah even if it vanishes eventually this thing is so funny and amusing to see
What a show
Odds it becomes naked eye visible?
It's a sungrazer
So high chance..? ๐
ikeya seki part 2
YOU CAN SEE THIS IN THE DAY
Ooooo that looks sickkkkk
Can't wait for it
Damn stellarium ain't showing promising apparent magnitude predictions :(
which stellarium r u using
Mobile
yeah stellarium mobile isnt that good for that kinda stuff
Ah
Would you recommend web version more? I don't trust desktop as the satellite tracking is wack (at least for me)
idk really, desktop app seems to work better
but yeah stellarium mobile dont use it for comets
a3 peaked at -4.something
stellarium mobile saying it would peak at 1.4
Alr, ty for the tip
Probably not
During the peak it will be too close to the sun
That's crazy
Honestly yea
Should be visible in Solar scopes if it gets above mag -8
i wont be able to try cuz its at 2am :/
I might actually see it finally holy shi
