So, I decided on a Newtonian Reflector and hoping to find a used EQ6-R Pro or Atlas EQ-G mount. Between the 6in and 8in reflectors I am looking into, there is a focal length increase of around 200mm (610 -800mm increase). Is the 8in worth the extra money? I hope to learn deep-space photography and use it for visual observation during public outreach and outings.
#6in vs 8in Newtonian Reflector

IMO the 8” is absolutely worth the extra money. The 8 inch collects almost double (1.77x) the light as the 6” which is great for dso imaging. The 6” however is a bit more portable if that’s a factor you’re considering.
Thank you for this! Portability is a small concern which led me to look more into a Schmidt-Cassegrain option. Any advice between the two? Both 8''
The Celestron VX8 is $2299 but it would also take care of the mount.
Some people prefer newts and some prefer scts there’s pros and cons to each
If you go the SCT route I would get the 8” Edge HD, it’s better suited for imaging than a regular 8” SCT.
Hmm, looking at the price, the Edge is a little much. I am just starting in astronomy, and this will be my first telescope. This information was perfect. The 8" newt seems to be the better deal out of the options.
You do need to collimate newts pretty often so I would look into a laser collimater. I’ve heard the one made by Baader is pretty good.
agreed on 8" over 6" for another reason: 6" newts often have plastic focusers, 8" newts rarely do
