I took another picture of M42. The infrared mod really helped to capture more of the nebula in a short time.

SiriL and Photoshop. Great data! The only suggestion is If you have guiding, turn on dithering to reduce the strong walking noise present in this data. Also, taking darks with a similar temp to your lights will reduce the walking noise greatly when stacking.

I know about the walking noise, but I don't have guiding yet, so there is not much I can do in terms of dithering. Hopefully soon. 😉

Would you say the rebel 3 is good for astrophotography? Or would it be worth moving up to maybe a 5?

I only use the Rebel T3i because that's what I have, I didn't buy it for astrophotography.
I am very new to this hobby and not a camera expert either. If you want a recommendation, I would try the "ask a nerd" channel. 😉

My pictures so far are a little noisy, but that's more due to my other equipment and lack of experience. I have seen extremely good shots with this camera on this server. Also, it is very affordable.

The rebel Tx and Txi series cameras can perform quite well for starting out in astrophotography, especially when modified (removing UV/IR cut filter).

They need a lot of help maybe such as well executed calibration frames, tracking via a startracker or other tracking mount, etc.
