like if you look at moc usage top teams are basically full dot teams and full mono quantum teams, which are so far the 2 main archetypes hoyo has pushed really hard, and both teams are very cookie cutter and inflexible in what you can slot into them

just with less synergies

Most of this is taken from one of my fellows but essentially:
star rail definitely has a 'problem' in that it wants you to see it as a proper premium adventure/turn based rpg
... but then you're reminded that it's a gacha game
meaning no amount of strategizing or thinking "smart" about fights will ever/rarely help in progression.
if you literally do not have 'good (enough) units and good numbers' down the road.

case in point
one of my fellows' younger brother is slowly getting more and more infuriated with star rail
currently walled at
... 1.2's story quests iirc. Against the deer boss no less. he grinded (begrudgingly) just enough to get a full team of four people that can beat the deer.

And the fact that you mentioned Gepard even once again reinforces this. Now tbf, anyone can actually get Gepard. The catch?

300 rolls on Standard and he's yours
the extra catch?
are you not rolling enough or super selective with your rolls as an f2p, or even starting recently? rip
rip any premium units that are flat out going to be better long-term investment if you want good sustain and utility on top of that, which even Gepard is limited at compared to the likes of Fu Xuan.

I don't mind having to grind to progress for most other games, no less for plenty classic single player turn based ones. But in a live service one to boot where my main interest is to advance main story as decently possible in this leak ridden "hey check out this spoilerific YT thumbnail you didn't ask for" social economy?
It's a straight up crap experience. Against Memetic Nightmare? Now I actually had some fun with that. Even with my Blade/FMC/SW/Lynx team it took me a few tries to beat it, and its mechanics were able to be worked around, plus Black Swan's assist was actually useful thanks to the fact that it had wind weakness. Sam? It's an attrition battle and the guy decides when it's his turn. Black Swan's assist is gimped, despite the fact that you legit had a Lightning character in the background storywise.

So yeah. That's why I'm not only a bit anxious seeing the above leak but prioritizing a couple sustain/support units that will at least mitigate me having this experience again anytime soon where I'm actually getting a sensation of being 'filtered' bc of it.

Or even the Ruan Mei mission with the most cancer boss content fans with lower investment (and by this I mean 'pull worth') dread to this day. And to what point in ease and investment?

It's 💯 doable, make no mistake. But it's gonna take more time and investment in general. It aint the exactly the same as working with the units that my average mainline Final Fantasy units. Sth that's gonna intentionally be harder for a majority of the player base when every patch is has its regular two premier SSRs taking spotlight and easing that. But realistically?
At least HSR has plenty of pull currency to go around so that you're at least more likely to pull at least some decent limited 4*s to go around for those that care as much, but it again boils down to a battle of rng, FOMO, and pull economy. We live in a gacha society.
