Yeah. It’s more immediately apparent than Traveler, who was noticeably more gradual in 1.x and is pretty much a ‘co-lead’ along with Paimon so they end up sharing their contributions to any/most convos.
Trailblazer is riding ‘solo’ a good amount of time and is just snappier in general with theirs.

a friend of mine actually has some interesting feedback when it comes to characters like these two and in other games like Zelda and recent Persona

“avatar character and self-insert are not the same thing”

for self-inserts in gaming you're generally looking mostly at customizable characters

silent protagonists usually are self-inserts but not always

with avatar characters, they have enough agency and quirks to be actual characters, but also malleable enough that you can "experience story through them", rather than "follow them"; example, having actual dialogue choices, where the character determines what the choices are, but the player is the one choosing among them.

self-insert characters are more commited to the bit of doing what their name implies.

custom characters with in-game choices being vague "you show x emotion" or "you talk about x topic" instead of actually written out. (which neither Traveler or Trailblazer do to amounts higher than than them actually speaking or having precise thoughts/dialogue).

@vivid moon apologies for the long, but felt you might be interested in this feedback too.

nah even before that imo. I’d argue even from the very beginning in part. I can see someone making the argument that they “feel like a self-insert” in the 1.x days (but then again my memories of that patch are hazy).
But that direction was becoming less and less evident by the time we met dainslef and then Lumine to ‘reel us’ back to them as a person imo. Traveler’s own character and arc is just taking the longest and most gradual to flesh out.

if anything I’d say they’re at least past the threshold from a self-insert. A standard level of you may.
Trailblazer in most of my time playing up to Xianzhou isn’t that much functionally different in the actual overworld game apart from texts and more voice monologues. Their dialogue options are a few more numerous depending on how you want them to behave. Traveler’s long been at a point where both options of their dialogue makes up the entirety of what they’re saying combined.
