I personally think Shield hero is fine but I can get why some people aren't happy with the new season. Naofumi has finally cemented himself as one of the cardinal heroes so he's kinda lost the underdog vibe that most people liked about him. It's also kinda falling into the same rut that Kyoukai Senki is falling into where we are a 1/3 into the cour and for the amount of screen time not a lot has happened. In Kyoukai Senki we are reunited with this one major character from part 1 but they've changed and they don't elaborate on why they've changed until the 4th episode they've returned in and nothing major except some worldbuilding and politicking was done in half of those episodes. I personally feel like they spent way to long on it and they could've explained it in the third episode because they only have so many episodes left and the biggest plot point from the first cour is still unresolved not to mention the overarching goal.

Imo, the biggest issue with S2 of shield hero (tho really it started with the islands arc at the end of S1) is that it's just a fundamentally different show/premise than what people got into Shield Hero for.

Like, not in the tone shift/emphasis shift that Mushoku Tensei did (that one is still Rudy trying his best to grow and protect people), but almost a shift on a fundamental level.

Folks got interested in Shield Hero as a gritty tale of a guy betrayed slowly but surely regaining the trust of others and regaining his own trust for others, with a fantasy setting laid on top of that. That core is pretty much gone by the end of S1.
