That's honestly one of the most important things to me in story (it's not a deal breaker but it makes it so much better if it's there) is that the author / director knows what the strong points of the series are and capitalizes on it. A lot of the abridged shows focus on the jokes vs a cohesive story, but SAO's actually gave theirs proper character development and structure.
Would highly recommend at least giving the first five or so episodes a shot.

Things i value most in a manga are these, story, atmosphere, relatability, and pure entertainment, and art
There are some manga i like with average story but have a beautiful atmosphere
And some with a beautiful story but alright art/atmosphere
