I'll admit it does kinda slow burn and is a bit uncomfortable until ep8 but everything after that and even alot of the stuff before that is a great example of the potential that isekai has. If you ever return to the series I would recommend getting past the first 8 episodes because that's when the story actually takes off and worldbuilding does brrr. Maybe wait till season 2 to see if Studio Bind can continue the amazing production quality that S1 had to offer. I understand if you don't wanna watch based off of the automodded stuff but that goes away over time as a main point of the story is his redemption as he becomes not a degenerate. It's also one of better isekai that actually have some focus on his previous life and how that affected him (I'll admit this is more sparse than I'd like it to be, but it's still more than most). All in all I think MT is worth the watch because of it's characters, worldbuilding, and animation are top teir (imo, I know your standard are crazy so it might be avg but they're still good). Also it was the top novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō for pretty much it's entire run and is consistently in the top 10 years later so it has the merit to be a good show on top of it having a studio formed for the sole purpose of making the anime.

That's the nice thing about MT is that the cast rotates around alot and has good development for pretty much all of it's characters

my problem is when the recommendations for it ive been given are from people who consider rezero or like konosuba to be good series its hard to take them seriously

I know a lot of people that would argue that it's characters are it's strong point. They all have flaws and they all struggle with them. Most of the people in the world are awful human (and other) beings but that's what makes you invest in them as they become better. Also the story focuses on his life up until his late 20s - early 30s so it's not children for that much of the story. The next season will time skip a couple years anyway to YA(teen) Rudeus.

i usually advocate for that kind of storytelling too where you don't have big infodumps or exposition and its up to the viewer to kinda piece things together or the exposition to be included in a natural way

but when half the words spoken are universe specific jargon its a bit hard to follow

The anime is very much a slow burn (and the second season got caught at an awkward point between arcs, so it got dragged out a bit pacing-wise), but its still a very good adaption that stays very true to the source material (the current season (S3) should also be much more eventful).

The manga is pretty well done, but I do feel it takes a more lighthearted approach to the arcs it covers (not to the point of butchering them like Mushoku Tensei's manga, but outside of the early arcs, it's notably lighter in tone). It also is being released in a bit of an unusual order (Each of the first few arcs is being released one chapter at a time at the same time)

TL;DR: Manga is good, but more light in tone. Anime is a faithful adaption, but suffers somewhat from pacing issues in the second season, and is a very slow burn in the first (worth it tho imo for the season finale).

Yeh, I've always put it like: It's (at least for the first dozen or so volumes) very much a "redemption/character growth" story, and the author really wanted to hammer home just how messed up the MC is at the start of their journey. A bit too heavy-handed imo, but I get what they were trying to show.
The MC really does learn from it though, thankfully, and watching their growth as a person over the first season (even more so in the upcoming S2) is honestly a really refreshing case of character development.

I know "three episodes" is the generic rule of thumb, but I'd honestly urge folks to watch it til Turning Point (~Ep 8/9) before giving up on it, just because of how over the top the first few episodes are as far as the MC is concerned.
