The lawsuit is in Japan though because Palworld's developer is a Japanese company, so it makes sense to just focus on the case there (+ Japanese courts are one of the harsher ones when it comes to copyright/IP protections)

The original question was why Nintendo was only suing in Japan. Palworld's main markets isnt really relevant to that. Nintendo can see Palworld's presence in their (Nintendo's) main market as a threat without Palworld themselves caring about that market.
Though tbh, I mostly suspect it's more the favorable copyright/IP environment and Nintendo's lawyers being more familiar with that legal system.

Nah, that's not quite true. The point of defamation is that if you use statements that have no legal basis (which doesn't matter if it's true or not). So until you have established your misgivings legally, it's defamation no matter true or false

The problem is the lack of information. If you accuse someone of something, you base it on limited amount of information most of the time. Proving it legally required you to build a case or otherwise collect more information and or involve more experts in which case it's not a biased take anymore

I'd say your best friend is making those side characters something worth investing interest in, because then the reader will naturally be torn if they find out those characters had cut ties/were never on good terms in the first place
Otherwise if they go from being barely necessary to the story to suddenly a serious fight, it'll either come off as comedy or forced drama
