Fate zero? Well there’s brutality. One of the side characters is a psycho that kidnaps and kills children.

For FSN, the Steam version is based off the console version. So some stuff is toned down compared to the original PC release.

The earliest parts of FSN can be notorious for its pacing, esp with its long prologue. For me what kept me going was seeing how much the franchise changed from that point as well as the MC’s own arc/introspection.

If you can get past that early wall and still be interested, there’s still a lot more good than bad with the game as a whole imo. I won’t say it’s my favorite visual novel ever, but I’d say it’s one worth playing through at least once.

No, it's fine as is. VN is just different vibes. Anime went for anime look and feel

well, like I said before. FSN is the 'root' of the whole franchise. So a lot of the concepts you see throughout the franchise, they had their start in this first entry. So you'll be familiar with them by going through FSN as it is. A lot of the entries that came after FSN make references to some stuff introduced in FSN, so you'll have an easier time picking up than if you went through them without FSN stuff.

But some Fate entries are disconnected enough from FSN that they can work even without it arguably. Fate/Extra is mostly it's own thing in an alternate setting.
