I would totally suggest Durarara. It's genius. The story lags a bit in the middle, but the ending is one of the best I ever witnessed in anime.

Durarara is rather specific. Watch it without a proper mood - and you are out of luck

By genius I mean the characters (their actions and motives). Everything else is up to debate (like the story and narration could just be not your cup of tea), but I tend to value characters more than anything else

well, that's what I meant to have a proper mood. It is really one of those anime that needs that sort of thing

Monogatari is next level of course (especially the scenery). Mainly for artistic reasons IMO.

But in Durarara the plot is way more intricate. Everything is interconnected and something that happened in the first episodes will influence much later episodes and vice versa.
