My biggest thing was mostly with the romance angle (which is kinda funny given the context we're talking about this in ).
Imo, the main focus of the story was the MC learning to forgive himself in a way that doesn't undermine the real harm he did (learning to let go of the self-imposed suffering while still taking genuine responsibility for his actions).
He has this mental barrier telling himself that he isn't allowed to feel happiness (or to connect with people at all really) because of what he's done, but that same barrier/lack of connections is what's keeping him from taking the steps needed to start changing himself for the better/making right for what he's done.
The movie cuts out the bits about his friends and the romance angle because the story the movie's trying to tell is not about the MC's love life, or even his relationships with that specific group of friends. It's a hyper-focused cut dedicated to the MC's relationship with himself. While the manga does touch on other characters, I don't think they're nearly as fleshed out of stories as the MC's journey, so I'm fine with the movie cutting them out to focus exclusively on the core journey of the story. It makes a really tight package that delivers a whole character arc with a satisfying payoff at the end.
^All that's not to say that the manga is bad. The side arcs are all very nice too. I'm just a very big fan of stories that come in with X thing to say and make sure that every thing they include is polished and targeted directly towards advancing that message. And the movie does fantastic job of that imo.

zero escape series is probably the best take on time travel I have seen in a long time. It's not the best implementation, but ideas were very novel.
well, the same goes for Stein's Gate. It's very bumpy as far as narrative goes with ups and downs, but the ideas were also quite innovative
it's funny to remember, how the concept of flashbacks and flashforwards almost didn't exist before the TV show LOST (it made the former mainstream and I am pretty sure the latter was basically invented there). Actually such simple concepts, that weren't used that much at all in narration

That's probably the most logical reasoning for it. Also in the games Water Shuriken isn't actually that strong. It's a Priority move in the same vein as quick attack so it's power is actually quite low. Ash-Greninja's big Water Shuriken is actually a completely unique attack that only it can use.
