I mean I don't really think it was supposed to be for a comedic effect. Sure it was used for that purpose sometimes but it was just as much supposed to be a ||metaphor for Rudeus's feelings for Eris and the trust issues he has after her and Sarah. It finally rising again was symbolic of him finally learning to fully trust someone again and resolving the issues of his past||. MT has always been a redemption story at its heart and I think that was supposed to be more of the focus. So I just finished the first season of Synduality: Noir and I gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The mech designs are a little wack (kinda MODOK like) but the characters are pretty good and plot they've been slow cooking in the background has got me invested. Solid 8/10. Can't wait for Season 2 in 2024. (Last episode spoilers) ||It'd be a real nice touch if the second season was called Synduality: Mystere||.

Also how do you draw that line with something like Log Horizon where all the isekai'd people are literally incapable of permanently dying but they are in a world that isn't their own.
Or something like 'Saving up 20000 gold coins in another world' where the MC can freely transport between the worlds but could still die in either.
Also I feel like I could make a pretty strong argument for some of the reincarnation through time shows slightly falling under isekai as well if the world changed enough.
