back in the past a lot of manga weren't officially available unless you lived in japan (and even today a lot of stuff still isnt globally available unless it's really popular). So people from japan would get a hold of chapters, scan them, the other people would translate them and post the translated chapters online ,thats where the term scanlation came from. Due to how physical publishing works, a new volume/issue would get printed and shipped a few days before the official release for it, so that all the stores would get them in stock in time. Some stores took advantage of this and the whole scanlation thing to sell copies of the books earlier for money on the side. This would result in the scanlations being posted online a few days earlier than the official release date for the physical chapters in japan (and the leaked raw scans even earlier than that,since theres no waiting for translations for those). This still happens today,and will probably never stop until publishers switch to an online-first model.

some stores get the shipment a few days earlier due to geographical location

they sell it early

it gets posted online

a scanlation group takes the scans, translates them,typesets them,cleans them up

then you got the fan translated chapter posted a few days before the official release

the raw scans leak about ~1 week(maybe a bit less than that) before the official release

the whole scanlation process takes a day or 2 for the experienced groups

Ah, I think the most in depth I've gone is seeing the schedule of the mangaka for (I think) one piece

And how they basically just work nonstop for 16-20 hours a day

you got the main artist and/or writer (which are different people sometimes)

then you got assistants, which are people that want to get into the industry but are lacking in experience

assisntants help with the more tedious processes like drawing backgrounds

the writer usually makes a rough drafts,presents it to the editor (a person from the publishing company that advises them on what to write), suggests changes, writer updates the draft, they keep going back and forth till theyre satisfied with the final version of the chapter

then the chapter gets drawn and inked and shipped to the presses

I assume youve heard stories of mangas getting ruined due to editors forcing the writer to push the story in certain ways instead of letting them do their thing
