like, i first had the puppy in the crate i got for him (it was mostly enclosed with one gated side so he would be safe) and let my older dog sniff him through the cage door once he realized there was a crate there

then put my older dog in another room while i let the puppy explore and become accustomed to his new home

put puppy back in his crate to give my older dog more time to sniff

repeat until i eventually took puppy out and held him in my hand and kept him just out of reach for the older dog to smell but not touch

eventually move on to letting them interract with each other when they both seemed relatively comfortable with existing (the older one gave plenty of concerned but not aggressive side eye still because he had never seen a puppy before)
