#Modpack: Prominence II RPG Suggestion: Progress...
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
we have builds rn - and usually we have starting points - classes usually lock players to one thing (look at Origins mod) and that is the issue
For starting - it's pretty straight forward - for archer you get bow and arrows, for warrior you get sword and armor you find
This is already kinda in the game, even if there's not a "formal" system for it. The RPG Series mods included in the pack have different tiers of armor, for example going from Warrior Armor to Berserker Armor, the talent tree has you start with a certain "path" that gives you good starting stats, then you spec into a Fate that defines your late game playstyle, and even the Artifact weapons themselves have upgradable talent trees that often have differences in how they're built, for example Thunderwrath having an option between focusing on physical damage or focusing on the passive lightning strikes.
At the end of the day it's Minecraft, it's a sandbox at its core, and you really can build yourself and play however you want, you can mix and match a lot of mechanics and ideas, and there's a plethora of types of gear to allow you to do that.
So, the class system makes gameplay too linear? Wow, I’ve been going at this the wrong way… I was confusing builds with classes!
builds are just bunch of armor, weapons, talents, spells, trinkets and whatnot people put together and call it "Build"
you can make iron armor and iron sword
and say "This is iron build"
Builds are a combination of class selection, gear, trinkets, weapons, and the strategies you use with them. Classes, or Fates as they're called in this pack, are more the defining element of how you play. So with the warriors devotion fate for example you focus on two handed weapons to do slow, heavy burst damage. Or with the fire archmage fate you focus on doing damage with fire spells, but even then there's like 3 different fire spellbooks with different playstyles
Perhaps what I’m trying to come up with is a Pre-lich/Pre-King build, that can be used as a spring board for different archetypes the player can imagine down the road.
you don't need anything in addition to the pack, to make it happen
for example - pre-lich we offer getting bow, with cobweb shot
you can go kill mutant skeleton too for it's chestplate
it would be spring board to archer build
¯_(ツ)_/¯
What my plan is that one build can lead to another kind, then another, as the journey progresses.
Early game is good for figuring out what kind of playstyle you want. There's plenty of early game, cheap gear you can make for any of the class types in the pack that you can use and experiment with even before the first boss. Mages have cheap robe sets, warriors and assassins have easy melee weapons and armor that can be made, all of these different classes have tiers to their gear and weapons that range from 2 hours of gameplay to fighting endgame mythic bosses
but why is there need for that
as switching builds are easy
you speak of it like classes still
while builds we have are sandbox
classes are restrictive
and you need "spring board" to get into them
Having builds progress too much feels a little bit like a "have your cake and eat it too" situation, where you end up trying to do a little too much of everything
Dang it, I’m still thinking too linear for a sandbox RPG…
yes
this isn't linear
this isn't final fantasy
this is minecraft
you can have all builds on hand, ready
Neither is it Golden Sun… An RPG for Minecraft should be what it’s intended, without restrictions, or limits.
ok
sooo
you back to this
what you think is restrictions/limits here
do you think limiting bosses to specific level is bad mechanic?
have you played before 3.0.20hf update?
if so
have you been at lvl 50 or so, when killing night lich
with noob armor
I think - Golden Sun, if it's like Final Fantasy also has "Gates"
Not really, but I have a good idea why you implemented the starting cap. To prevent overleveling.
Ok so
This
your Golden Sun
does it have gates or no
as in
when you start the game
can you just go and try killing main boss ?
the final boss
Until you clear Sol Sanctum, the cap is at level 5.
Yet there was an exploit involving Jenna that made Issac and Garet go beyond 5.
Ok
so there are cheat commands
to skip you killing king/lich
so it's the same here

Then again it was a programming oversight by Camelot.
so all in all
this is gated for a reason
there is build freedom
it's sandbox
the gates help people not to overlevel and farm equipment to give them "jumping pad" into builds
I’ll never look at an RPG the same way, after this… Though Golden Sun will still have a place in my heart, I’ll create a sandbox version of that franchise, one day.
the issue with sandbox is balancing
"sandbox" means your players can just skip most stuff
and go to boss
if it will have quests
it will be gated

quests = gates
as if you need to complete them, to reach something, it's a gate
Right, but there are side quests that can be done to make main quests easier to clear.
so
it isn't fully sandbox

you still have to do main quest
you still have to fallow linear path
It’s almost time to go home, I think you’ve answered my question, and it seems this suggestion is rather redundant, at this point.
robe and magister to magus
spider to souldancer
titans shrouds and its armor before
netherite and sapphire
this already kinda exists
just throwing in some examples
i think death knights do it really well with their armor and the robes they use
and the weapons
But, I appreciate you clarifying all this to me, thanks.
Please read the philosophy of prominence in the wiki front page
@rain abyss `Why is there tech if it's an RPG?
You might think an RPG is strictly medieval / magic themed, but no!
RPGs are roleplay games. In Prominence, you make your own character with its own progression, making it stronger, and forging your own story within your adventures, you make your own path.
Tech in Prominence is completely optional! It is there to serve as rewarding quality of life solutions, but without forcing players to get on it. Same thing applies to magic!
That is also why Prominence does not have a classic "class" system, and instead it gives you the ability to make your own class with the Talent Tree, taking the path you want and making a unique build for your unique character.
YOU are the one that decides what happens in your journey through Prominence.

Something that you could do yourself to change this experience for new players would be to make builds specifically for the early game and post them in the unofficial player builds section. There aren’t many builds specifically for early game which kind of makes sense, but this is something you could do that would help a lot of new players in your situation!
That’s what I was trying to implement, thank you for clarifying!
