yes and no, dig a hole and dump them in there, cover the hole but keep one gap open and toss some gold in it, if they see you they turn hostile and wont trade for a minute or so with you

you can also use a bartering station instead of the gap in the hole to throw something in

i had an issue with turning down my particle effects in video settings messing with it.

so double check you haven't otherwise i dunno. if you think youre close and its still not showing particles, use the map and adjust your y level down to around -50 to -30 thats about the range of the stronghold.

Tetra stuff just requires you to get an ever-improving set of tools for making and upgrading tools, like a balanced Tinker's Construct.

Also, the "rare structure" may not be nearly as rare as you think it is.
