A few things about starting playing in this modpack:
• Variant human is indeed best meta race to choose, unless you don't want to skip ability to fully upgrade your equipment. It's really not that important, but without "underdark" type race you can't use augmenting table from apotheosis.
• Apotheosis affixes were nerfed badly, but experience cost remains
while knowledge of ages disabled.
So, it's almost impossible to collect enough experience for highest rarity reforging anyway.
• The hardest/weakest class is any class without access to spells.
• Don't mind artificer having access to mending, because everyone can use life mending anyway.
It's even better then mending,
especially for mage classes with access to healing spells.
• Actually, don't mind enchantment restrictions at all, because there's apotheosis affix for items that disables enchantment restrictions.
• "Eldritch blast" of warlock is just slightly more powerful magic missile cantrip that gets unreliable, like common magic missile cantrip. Upgrade on level 15 doesn't changes anything. Just use any other spell casting class and get an actual eldritch blast spell that works, unlike inbuilt "eldritch blast" of warlock.
• Magic missile is best cantrip for starter for it has seamless range, but this cantrip will be useless after you acquire real magic arrow spell. All other cantrips will turn to be useless the same way, except one.
Fortification cantrip is cheap to cast and has very short cooldown, practically making you apply flat damage reduction on yourself and even your friends nearby.
It completely overshadows spell variant, as spell has very long cooldown for just about twice more absorbtion.
• If you picked mage class, then it's highly recommended to find lich tower from destructive bosses mod.
You'll find everything you need for spells in local basement.
• There's simple storage mod, so don't stick to chest for long and switch to storage as soon as possible.
• Use villagers to get ender pearls and blaze rods.
• Kill pillagers to get coins.
• Collect common rarity items and salvage them. You can use it's mystical scrap to reroll reforging variants almost for free.
• Temperature immunity is one way to turn off entire temperature system. Pick it, if you want to disable temperature mod.
Don't pick it, if you like this immersive experience of getting cold in end, no matter the highest possible termal resistance on armor.

Edit: Underdark trait is actually insanely good, even though shines only in the late game.
Dark elves and dwarves can use augmentation table, which capable of rerolling and maxing out apotheosis affixes. It doesn't requires you to have thousands of experience, like it does in newer versions of apotheosis.
Basically, you need 125 level to pick first option in reforging table to simply turn item into ancient rarity equipment, then you augment it however you like!

Underdark race is musthave, if you want to max out equipment.
You CAN'T max out equipment without underdark race.
(in multiplayer at least one player should pick underdark race)
