I still wonder why French is considered as the romantic language when the most common swearing word means something very degrading...
Yea and ||most of slang is shit based||
Really ? That’s romance in my book 🗣️
That's actually true, now that you say it...
There's also nettle soup
This one i tasted and it's good fr
Sooooo good yes!!
Idk the French version tho
But ah so much is edible if only people weren’t so afraid of everything
Well, different cultures come with different eating habits
Actually my area and us had a really interesting history with foregoing and edible native plants
Most of which is embroiled in racism, segregation and colonization of course
Ah, colonization...
Most people are afraid of stuff bc of lack of knowledge about it (which is to their best, I'd rather not eat a flower than eating one and getting some sketchy disease because I mixed it up with its poisonous cousin)
True, deadly look alike are very common
But I would like to argue: natural selection
/j
Noooo
It's terrifying

It looks like a train station i used to go to
And i don't want to go there next time and feel threatened by such a thing
I wanna see an animation in how it would look like from the inside of this train
I don't think anyone's alive in this
i hold you in high esteem 先生 but i wouldnt visit your amusement park 🥹
😔
i love roller coasters though
i dont like them
i mean
i would visit your amusement park
just not go on the attractions
i'd gladly spend 20e on a pizza there though
10 *
ofc
amusement park food is twice as expensive as the ones in pizzeria
Last time I've been to the amusement park was 8 years ago
In fact, I've only been twice to an amusement park : when I was 15, and around when I was 6.
Ah triste
😭
the older you get, the smaller the chances are that you can handle roller coasters
gotta enjoy them while you can!!!
😤
I couldn't even bear them at 15, お嬢様
For me there was no point in going to the amusement park, I'd rather stay at home and either do some math or playing on my mom's or my own computer
Yeah it really depends on each child's personnality
And already at that time I was already asking about the meaning of life, at 15
Everyone does AT that age i think
You think ?
Oh well
I thought it'd come later, at around 20
But hey, let's say that, at that time, I only was interested in my studies
It depends on the expérience you've already had in life
Some might just have a normal life (which IS ok)
And others might have had experiences
I had a rough start : both parents deaf, autism striking me but not knowing it for 21 years, bullying, a dead father at 18. Yet I defied all odds
Oh yeah that's why tho
Having Deaf parents must be a good expérience is it?
For me as long as love IS here, Deaf or not, IS doesn't change things
Clearly not. Especially for me, the eldest of a family of 5. I had to act as a kind of translator.
My dad loved me, that's undeniable. Even after the divorce of my parents, I remained at his side. And I can confirm that love doesn't need hearing sometimes.
Yes, but AT least (i hope), you spent good Times with him. Now he IS in a peaceful place where he Can rest, so all good !
I spent a lot of good times with him, of course
That's the most important, having no regrets = happy life
I do have a regret : I haven't explicitly told my father I loved him. Though I don't want to dwell on that fact.
i worked in one
yes, but he knew it, fathers are really often like that
sounds like what a math teacher would say
Oh really ?
Bonjour baguettes
how dare you Identify me as a Baguette? I am Clearly a ✨ 💕 🎉 croissant ✨ 💕 🎉

mais dans tous les cas bien joué !
I still don't understand the video "le géographie de l'Algérie" enough to completely enjoy it
especially when I get even a tiiiiiny bit distracted
ce n'est pas bien
it's a very niche subject so hold on tight! tu peux le faire
Yeah, well, Linguisticae's video are not the easiest subject 😂
And his humor is also a bit tricky, i think x)
It would be a bit weird to use "du français" here
I would say either:
- "Finalement, j'ai compris le français qu'il utilise à un rythme normal" -> Finally, I understood the french he use at a normal pace (you can't really really leave it unspecified, otherwise, it would kinda mean that you don't understand french anymore)
Or - "Enfin, je comprends le français à un rythme normal" -> Finally, I understand french at a normal pace
A case where you would use "du" would be:
- "Enfin, j'ai une bonne compréhension du français (parlé à un rythme normal)" -> Finally, I have a good understanding of (spoken) french (at a normal pace)
Ah and i use "enfin" because it's more natural for me to use it 😅
je choisissais le dernier option
la dernière !

les articles sont très difficiles
if you dont have them in your native language
still underuse them in English btw
😂
"enfin" is a more casual way to say it i'm guessing?
Yep, I'm happy that I don't have to learn them xD

Hum, wait, I trying to think about it 😂
Yea i used du as in he understood "some french"
It's not really more casual but "Finalement" is more emotionless.... I guess? xD
I think I use it more to make statement like when I wrote something or when I want to say "Finally, I finish that thing you told me to do" without a lot of emotion.
"Enfin" is a bit more "Yes! I have finally finish that damn thing"
I adapted his answer to his level for the language
He's been only a week in and has an exam on monday
Wut? a week? xD
Phrase au top ! Et oui ils sont difficiles 😄
Yup ! On tente un speedrun de 10 jours
oooh I see! thank you sm
j'ai un test dans le lycée
et oui pour fun
Np 😄
Okay 👀
Yes for the first but I'm not using it as a interjection.
"Enfin" has also the meaning of "After a long wait" by itself
Whereas "Finalement" does not.
If I have to reformulate the sentence to an extreme, it would be:
- "Finalement, j'ai une bonne compréhension du français" -> To conclude, I have a good understanding of french
- "Enfin, j'ai une bonne compréhension du français" -> After a long wait, I have a good understanding of french (I should change change the english sentence here, but the important point is the beginning xD)
"Finalement" is a bit like making a report, so that why it seems unatural for me (I had to search to check that because i could feel that something was off but didn't know exactly why xD)

"sur twitch" think "on the platform (of streaming) twitch" 👀
"ce qu'ils disent" -> what they are saying (but without specifying what they talking about)
You could also say "ce dont ils parlent" -> The subject they are talking about (but I don't think it's what you wanted to say here)
A chaque fois j’écoute “verlan” ma âme décède
Off topic for a sec, every time I see your pfp it feels like I’m slowly reading a manga 😂
Yeah, "âme" is a feminine word, i know but you need "mon" here. Don't ask me why xD
"qu'il n'existe pas" for the end. But otherwise, it sound pretty natural 👀
I had the last one in the test!
the last word
and I had no idea what it ment
"Joué"?
It mean "played" 👀
yep, I looked in the dictionary
now I have 11 days to prepare for same thing but for mandarin chinese

And you can use it like that to say "Good work" ("bien joué")
wth xD
thank you
for the ease of speech
just like "bel homme" sounds like "belle" despite "homme" being masc
u some crazy language mad guy arent u
yes I am
I looked at competitions and said "why not, sounds fun"
don't regret tho
french gave me kinda good exp overall
worthed it
also I found some interesting youtube channels
I hardly understand them for now tho
i was worried you'd end up hating it!
happy you had a good time
wwwwwwwww
||it's manwha tho but
||
|| you misspeled ||
btw I just looked and I'm going to get results only next month
Yes, it should be something like that x)
thats in a long time
jeez
yep
well they gotta check every guy that wanted to do this competition around the country
its like a tournament thing
you go competition inside school, then district of city, then city, then region, then country
if you make it to the end I mean
Www

Time for an anime idea
lol my homeroom teacher today said that the only remaining french teacher in school now interested in seeing me
as he said "she said: point a finger on that boy that knows something in french"

I haven't seen her even once btw, since there's no french as a subject in school and now she teaches another subject
can someone rate their french pronunciation, just out of curiosity

they sound good to me but you never know unless you're a native
Euh in my opinion it's ok for someone who just began to learn french
but i have a russian friend who has a very very good accent (not perfect because of the R's and the U's) + he speaks fluently. It's just a matter of practice imo
I can understand them easily. But they also have a very strong accent 😅
I don't think it will be a problem most of the time thought 👀
then I am accent deaf I guess...
I mean, I expected it since they're in no way related to french, they're a geography and history channel
I just wanted to make sure it's me deaf and their accent bad and I'm not trashing their abilities just because it's not something they do on the channel
No, you just don't know the difference. Here https://youtu.be/yTyX_EJQOIU?t=47
When he said "Je voudrais", the "vou" use a "u" sound quite common in english. But in french, it's a "ou" sound which also used in "Bonjour". It's a pretty common mistake that I see a lot. But when people learn pronunciation, nobody tell them those kind of things. And worse they said, you should learn all the phonetic at once. But that just don't work.
I can't help you for that, but for english, I tried to study some phonetic just enough to kinda understand that. Like in french, there is one "i" sound but in english, there are two (one "i" like "fit" and the other like "feet"). Just knowing that those sounds exist help a lot (even if you can't distinguish them for now).
If you can take the habit of searching the prononciation of the term you heard, it can help a lot too. Just seeing the phonetic and that pronunciation use this symbol can make you more conscious about those difference. I spent a lot of time on the Cambridge dictionary just for that and it did help in my case. But it also did take a bit of time. And even the other day, I searched some terms. But in my case, I'm just doom xD (I have an "internet" english accent 😂 )
tkt mec
they dont have a strong accent when they say random words but it sounds very foreign when they try to say actual sentences
they also make grammatical mistakes so i wouldnt take them to the word 👍
you can refer yourself to the subtitles though they seem pretty good even though very out of sync
||also bof is definitely not used like that||
I'm too accent deaf when it comes to european languages somehow
well hearing accents in a language you dont know is actually very tricky
i wouldnt call it accent deaf
if you asked me to spot the accent of a korean talking japanese or a czech talking german i wouldnt spot it either 🤷

Pessiって何?
Pessi is a twitter community (it means Messi + penalty). If you try to understand them, they will eat you
Ahhh oui

Good luck habibi. If you worked hard, there is no luck involved tho
Hopefully 6 years of English lessons will be enough. I mean we are now at B1 or B2 level.
I did it.
Nice
Good job!

Does anyone here speak French? I really want to pass 仏検2級 but my French is still at the beginner level. I need help 😭
Yes
Can you help me with French?
Yes
Maybe I DM you for French practice or no?
If you wanna practice in VC I'm available after work
If it's written in DMs can manage to find some time for that
I think your "after work" is midnight my time
I was mainly looking for DMs

bachelor = école supérieure
oh oki oki!
bonjoir! I have french classes and an exam yet I cant make a single sentence
do yaal think am cooked?
What is your exam about?

Habibi, are you gonna study in english at your uni ?
you mean in Paris or in general?
Paris
I haven't decided yet, maybe I can do it here
No I meant : if you go to paris, will you study in french or english ?
literally no idea
but I'm guess in French
Pouvez-vous m'expliquer pourquoi vous avez écrit dans votre "about me", « do your best or don't try at all » ?
oh man, my french is not good enough to reply coherently. but i meant it more as "go all in", really try, don't cut corners and be honest with yourself, etc. not in a discouraging way, quite the opposite
i figured it was more for you to practice french or something
Yes ahahah
Salut, comment cv ?

(i don't understand everything yet; what you wrote would roughly translate as "i didn't at all yet understood")||
||"à propos" 👍
||"le" is not mandatory here so you can just skip it, it sounds more natural. also, reverting subject and verb will fit more with the casual tense you're using -> Parlez-vous français ? (formal) / Tu parles français ? (informal)||
||this sentence is, though!
for a more natural way to answer, in french we usually don't retake the whole sentence, because we already know what we're talking about, so it would be more natural to say:
"tu parles français ?
-bah ouais et toi ?
-un peu, mais [c'est pas] (keeping the informal tone; ce n'est pas -> c'est pas) parfait mdr". alternative could be "un peu, mais pas parfaitement"
however, if you couldn't speak it but only read it, now you would need to precise "je peux un peu le lire, mais ...."||
||more natural to say "vraiment" rather than "vivement"; though vivement sounds like you're trying to be poetic or effusive
ne disparaîtra pas||
top 3 french people's favourite things
not sure i understood w
ok so threads arent called "forum"s tho, we just steal english word thread 😭 "forums" are whole websites dedicated to specific subjects, not discord threads
"comment l'appeler." "quoi" sounds like you're trying to emphasize your sentence and it sounds weird here, as if you were in front of him and he looked at you like that 🤨 while you were speaking so you added "quoi" to be like "trust me bro i don't know how to call it"
||"mtnt y a plus d'engagement"
tristement :p||
you could also use "engouement", though technically it has less of the meaning that "less people are active" and more that "people are less enthusiastic about the thread". I don't think most people would nitpick on those underlying differences as both words are not used that commonly in everyday conversations
also "à la belle époque" works best, alternatives that come to my mind would be
-"à l'époque" (less subjective)
-"tah l'époque" (obviously very slangy w)
-"à/pendant l'âge d'or" (same level of speech, though, imo "la belle époque" sounds nostalgic while "l'âge d'or" sounds like you're emphasising the thing rather than your emotional attachment to it)
idk if this message was just heavy use of queb french somehow but I just said "how is this thread not dead yet, like what? its a japanese server"
Ive seen it used?
btw to be clear I regularly mix up the words in english too lol
aussi, pourquoi donnes-tu autant de corrections??
owww i see!! here we'd say "comment c'est possible que ce thread soit toujours pas mort ? c'est un serveur (de) japonais quoi" or variants :D
could be in queb french, i really don't know their slang :D but most french people i see on discord servers dont even use threads tbf... but in the mainland i'm a 100% sure that a forum is just a 3rd party website
i love l'âge d'or
france :D
||same as when I corrected someone else earlier, here inverting back subject and verb is better when talking in informal form; d'où tu viens / tu viens d'où||
||alors je comprenais pas pourquoi tu donnais plein de corrections (in ML france we don't say "je suis confus", though it's grammatically correct, and i would guess common in qb french due to the english inspiration :D)||
I never noticed that kind of nuance but it is intuitive, I havent really had many french friends so the last couple years my only exposure has been to school french, and that has an underlying formality to it
yea teachers tend to only teach how to use the formal construction
which leaves us frenchies with foreigners who sound very posh www
||et la conjugaison ........ plusieurs an__née__s ...... dans un environnement||
yup language is like everything, don't do it for some time and most of it goes away
though to be fair even with small mistakes it's still fairly understandable
haha yeah, that is until u start using "salut" for every greeting before realizing its rude outside of quebecisme 💀
xD
I did that for my entire france trip 😭
between friends, here "yo" or "wesh" would be common too
wesh!? never heard it
i mean as long as it's not work context it's fine 😂 sounds quite a chill attitude from a complete stranger but otherwise it's not as rude as wsh or yo 😂
I got some pretty strained looks from the airport lady
we've got lots of arabic borrows in the last 10 years, most of it is very informal and i would not be surprised if it was not taught at school hahaha
wow, thats super interesting, altho mtl (where Im from) is very multicultural, there is 0 arabic influence on the language since we separated from france around 3 centuries before arabic immigration occured to france
j'avais compris tqt 🫡
l'âge d'or a aussi un côté historique mais beaucoup plus vaste que LBE (l'âge d'or de l'islam, l'âge d'or du hip-hop...) c'est pour ça que je me suis dit autant ajouter des précisions
yup! instead you guys have plenty of english borrows :D
even more than we do
its really wierd cuz I always thought that, but then my grade 6 teacher was from france and she said that francais de france uses a lot more english borrows actually??
it always threw me off a little
but I think we just have borrows for different things
that was very wierdly wiriten
Im rushign lol
we use a lot amongst young people but older generations (40+) usually have no idea what you're talking about
even words as simple as "screenshot" i have to translate everything in french for my mom 💀 i know in quebec they tend to translate a lot of things too but we usually don't bother when talking to each other
could be the school french but when I go to multimedias I need to use these words or they dont get me
yes je répondais à lori
||j'ai aucune notion de l'histoire ....... j'ai aucune idée de quoi tu parles (informal, keep "tu" consistent)||
here i never heard courriel unless informative things at school back in elementary, 2008 😂
ya, but Ive heard my dad talk with his colleagues, and they also use words like that to be fair, and he is fluent and sounds suuuuper quebequois
also, my first 4 years of school were at a place that taught francais de france so my accent is in this wierd middleground where it doesnt sound french, but not fully quebequois either, and my lack of persistent usage makes me overdo my r's and mess up vowels when I speak too fast
my french friend that lives in quebec but has french parents says it sounds "international with a hint of american"
||franco means rough in slang ww but a very good dictionary is Wordreference. it usually don't have the "younger generation" stuff (very little arabic borrows in it) but la langue française can be a good complement if you encounter some and don't really have an idea of what's going on||
basically I cant speak perfect french with anyone really lol
oh, everyone says anglo or franco here
since the queb language laws
like with a crowd, a patrouilleur might say est-ce quill y a des anglos ici? tout le monde est confortable en francais?
its just whatever your preference is
like if you went to my school to the french sector, Id say il est du secteur franco
yup but i meant it as in, here, if you tell a 45 yo the word "screenshot" he'll look at you like you're some alien, while i guess in quebec it would be much more common, even if they don't use it
but in the same way as you, i know very little about quebecois french so maybe i'm wrong :D
yea, well here we would understand "capture d'écran", but "courriel" would make you sound old af 💀
r is fairly the most mistreated letter amongst foreigners so dont worry wwww my spanish friends treat it as their own latine "r", a lot of other foreigners force it a lot like a "rh" or not enough like an aspirated "h", so it's alright 😂
I dont really think so, I dont think screenshot is a great example tho because I know 45 year olds that would look at you that way that are english 😂
people have told me I have the proper pronounciation of it, I just cant do it too fast without choking on it
rip everyone here says that
really wth 😂 yea tbf it could be just technology gap
wesh
yo
Slt cc, cv ?
hey
